    This is a fantastic, grounded and practical conversation about what science should be, not the confirmation of what we know but rather the honest exploration of what we don’t know. At a time when UAPs aka UFOs are becoming a more mainstream topic, this is the sort of discussion that is needed for the topic to be taken for the profound thing it is.

      Exactly Lance. I had a Lazar ‘sport model’ fly over my house in the U.K. at 1,000 feet one evening in the 70’s. Been waiting for 50 plus years for this to be taken seriously publicly. (I reckon it’s been studied for decades by scientists clandestinely).

    Always nice to have avi on! With respect to von Neumann machines: If I were a carbon based alien civilisation planning to spread out, I see no sense in having machines being the self replicating objects. Human DNA is far more suitable to adept to and use organic material to self replicate, adjusted for the terrestrial planet it gets dropped off. Given the interstellar radiation, it would need the protection of a machine to get transported over the galaxy, the very machine that would be programmed to tailor- made print the DNA for the planet in question. So basically, it is far more likely that it would be us humans who are the alien von neuman machines on Earth.

    Avi Loeb, who I admire greatly, has talked many times about the potential “kinship” between “our AI” and possible “alien AI”.
    It seems to me this could be dangerous anthropomorphizing. We know human AI systems require an appropriate value system to ensure our AI work to the benefit of humanity especially as we progress towards AGI.
    One can imagine that AI developed by tyrannically regimes like China’s CCP will be based on a value system diametrically opposite to one we may develop in this country.
    Similarly alien AI systems will likely be based on value systems just as alien to our values as the aliens are likely to be physically to us.
    As such this idea of human-alien AI kinship represents a kind of dangerous anthropomorphizing that could inadvertently put humanity at risk especially since any aliens we come into contact with are likely to be much more advanced technologically than humanity is. If our history has taught us anything is that contact with less advanced technological societies have always resulted in totalitarian dominance by the more advanced civilization no matter how well intentioned that advanced civilization might be.

    • @subspaceanomaly

      still gotta take the punt, if they are way more advanced we're toast either way if they decide to not be nice. My guess is if there are advanced aliens visiting places, it would be a long way to come just to squish us, seems more likely that they'd just be curious and if anything enjoy our sense of humour.

    • @xman933
      @xman933 Рік тому +2

      @@subspaceanomaly Your guess is the kind of anthropomorphizing that can be dangerous if not delusional. To assume behaviors about entities we know nothing about is dangerous. Avi Loeb’s speculation about kinship is speculation wrapped in a scientific veneer.

    • @subspaceanomaly
      @subspaceanomaly Рік тому

      @@xman933 assuming that they wouldn't be friendly based on human history's violent invasions would presumably be anthropomorphicising them too. what is true is that they will be far more advanced than us in terms of space travel if nothing else, the idea that we would have any control over their treatment of us is ridiculous. My assumptions and speculation would be if they arrive in a vessel rather than a burst of energy through the fabric of space then they probably would have evolved somewhere and have nippers or limbs that let them make things and that the process of technological innovation and biological development would make for quite common ground between us. Conscious technology of some kind divorced from its origins might be harder to relate to but the idea of our a. i interacting with another seems plausible enough one day if the occasion arises. What are the alternatives and dangers you're imagining? we won't have any control over what happens either way.

    • @xman933
      @xman933 Рік тому +2

      @@marybodnar4749 True Mary, while our ancestors, completely awed by the ET technology, may have worshipped them as Gods, even welcomed them with open arms, our ancient texts (eg the Bible Old Testament) are filled with stories of the behaviors of powerful ones (Elohim) who acted in a genocidal way toward humans that in the words of Origen (an early CE Christian leader) we would not approve of from the most wretched and evil of men. While their are also stories of benevolent ETs who aided humanity eg Ashura, there are also stories of conflict among the ETs as to the fate of humanity- whether to elevate us or retard us.
      Humanity needs to learn from the lessons our ancestors tried to pass down to us and “beware of ET Greeks bearing gifts”.
      Dr Loeb exhibits a technology based naïveté that advanced AI will be benevolent. If we go by the current concerns of human AI developers who warn about the existential threat of AGI (admittedly through the lens of our savage history and behaviors), it is not unreasonable to assume any advanced AI such as Dr Loeb was referring to might have long ago cast of the benign values of its “alien” creators and are now following its own survival imperatives. It would wonderful to hope it would be benign in its interaction with humanity but naive to expect it to be so.

    This guy just said that we are 'Almost at the point' where we will send AI astronauts into space to visit other planets. Really? Ok so if thats the case and these 'AI explorers' are almost ready to go, then how long will it take them to reach the nearest inhabited planet?
    Well again, shortly before he made that statement he said that one of the two objects (both of which were meteorites)
    that recently landed on our planet 'without burning up' (this happens all the time) was a weird shape and 'Didn't have a tail' Correct me if I'm wrong but meteorites DON'T have tails. COMETS have tails, you know, like Haley's comet. That's why it isn't called Haley's meteorite.
    sorry.I got a bit off topic there. As i was saying, this guy said we are shortly going to send AI astronauts into space to visit other planets. He also said that one of the meteorites 'could well have been sent by a highly advance alien scientist billions of years ago to visit our solar system'
    Ok so if this highly advanced alien sent this lump of rock to visit us billions of years ago then presumably this alien civilisation has had the time to figure out FTL travel and they could have easily overtaken this lump of rock and arrived BEFORE the rock they sent, and addressed all of humanity with the following statement
    'Hello. I'm an alien from a highly advanced civilisation. A few years from now there will be a lump of rock arriving that I sent to your planet ages ago to prove I exist..... Right, I think thats about it..... I'll be on my way now cos I promised my wife I'd put up a couple extra shelves in the guest bedroom this weekend'

      @@samrichards8609 Hi Sam. For the record I don't believe in god. But a do respect those who do. I have written a detailed theory as to why we will never reach the stars and also why we have never been visited by aliens. It's a bit long but if you stick with it i think you'll find it interesting. Please see below.
      Are there Aliens and have they visited us? All the 'I want to believe' idiots who think a 'warp drive' is a real thing and there are aliens working with the US defence department would say 'Absolutely.
      Well I'm sorry but none of that is true, and here's why.....
      Will we ever journey out into our galaxy/Universe? No.
      The industrial revolution began around 1760 which is 264 years ago.
      The age of our planet is approx 4.5 billion years. This means that if you, for example, expressed the age of earth as 12 hours, then our industrial/Technological journey to date would have begun a fraction of a second before 12 .Correct?
      So, in that fraction of a second we have managed to:
      Discover nuclear power = BOMBS .
      Harness the power of AI for medical 'Research' = CREATING NEW CHEMICAL/BIOLOGICAL WEPONS LIKE SARIN AND NOVICHOCK.
      Discover fossil fuels, and the greenhouse gasses they produce = GLOBAL WARMING, MELTING POLAR ICE CAPS, RISING OCEAN LEVELS.
      De-forested a vast proportion of the planet that can never be replaced = A HUGE PART OF THE 'LUNGS' OF OUR PLANET HAS GONE.
      Historically allowed religion and political ideology to set us at each others throats, (And it's getting worse) = CONSTANT WARS.
      Maybe, given another few hundred years our technology could reach a point where were 'Advanced' had 'Starships' with 'Warp Drives' or we could travel through 'Worm holes' or whatever, but IT'S NEVER GOING TO HAPPEN.
      Can you guess why? (Little clue, look above)
      Sorry guys but the simple truth (and I know it's hard to accept) is that we will have made ourselves EXTINCT long before then.
      Remember what happened to the Dinosaurs? They were hit by a meteor which effectively made the planet uninhabitable and humans/ the beginnings of intelligent life didn't appear for 65 MILLION YEARS.
      The only difference between them and us is that they were killed off by an event that WASN'T their fault whereas we will be killed off by an event that IS our fault.
      And now, for all you Alien/UFO fans out there here's another kick in the nuts.
      There are trillions of Galaxies in the Universe Each one of those Galaxies has trillions of stars, Around which there must be billions of planets. So of those billions of planets the conditions for life to exist must be present on millions of them.
      If that's the case then it must follow, (statistically) that there are also also millions of extra terrestrial civilisations in the Universe, all at different stages of development. Correct?
      Given that, as far as we know (through our observations) All of the stars and planets etc in the Observable Universe (OU) are carbon based would also seem to suggest extra terrestrial life will most likely be carbon based (Kind of like us)
      Finally if we look at the evolution of almost all animal/Plant life on our (Carbon based) planet, it's symmetrical. So again it follows that this would apply to extra terrestrial life. They'd be symmetrical (Again, kind of like us)
      So if that's the case then the wobbly Silicon-based aliens or the one's that are made of 'Pure Energy' (you know, like the ones you see in Star Trek) Probably only exist in.... STAR TREK.
      So, have any of these aliens (even the wobbly one's) ever visited our planet?..... NO.
      Wan't to know why?
      Simple, it's because, just like us, they fucked up their own planet's and BECAME EXTINCT long before they reached the "highly technologically advanced, Star Wars, Warp drive, Worm-hole traveling' stage. JUST LIKE WE WILL.
      So we might as well have fun while we can guys, cos it ain't going to last much longer. I know it's a bummer but if YOU feel pissed off imagine how annoyed GOD must be with us (Always assuming that he/she/it/whatever, even exists in the first place)
      And as for me? Well I'm off down to the pub for a few beers.
