great video Brian. had some of your awesome honey this morning with breakfast. 🐝🍯 and I will be holding some honey back for medicinal purposes. will make garlic honey medicine also. 🐝🍯
From those that are trying it, they are reporting ZERO beetles, so I am curious how it'll turn out for me. Thanks for following along. . Appreciate the support.
The peppermint starlights work, just make sure to read the ingredents on the bag and it's flavored with real peppermint oil, there are some out that are artifical flavored that dont work.
The hives you have are looking really good, but they are close to being in the swarm mode, because as you saw they're building drone comb on the top bars, so a close watch for queen swarm cells, they do drones first then queens next
@@carlsledge3868 Our weather has been so up and down. This past wknd we had snow/sleet/rain. Today we are 73 so between storms I'm going to try and check for cups and/or cells. I've only seen a handful of drones so far, so i think we are about a week or two out yet. I think.
anyone wants try the peppermint starlights, Walmart has the real peppermint oil flavored starlights 10 oz. bag for $.98 in Great Value brand, that's cheap enough for anyone, not that I'm a fan for walmart, I get my sugar there as well.
The Guardian gloves are actually not bad. They have a softer palm so it makes working hives much easier than the old style leather. Highly recommend them if you ever get another set.
always put the pollen patty over the brood nest and push several pieces peppermint candy into the patty itself to bettles off top of thr patty and laying eggs.
I like that utility bag you carry to the apiary. Still haven't tried the peppermint, but need to. The swifter sheets are more of a pain than they are worth.
we were just talking about shb last week. the pic of the beatle larvae in the patty is exactly why im shying away from the patties so far. of course the other main reason is i only have one hive .lol
your bees will eat the peppermint and make honey, i know from past experience. i bought 3 nucs from a guy who was feeding his bees hard green candy int he wintertime. when i got them home they started making green honey. . LOL a strong hive will manage any hive Bettles that may come, no worry's about them.
Your video gave me an idea and I just contacted the ministry of agriculture over here in Quebec and spoke to them about the candy's repellent properties, (and also that the University of Florida was looking into it) maybe this can help spread the word.
I give credit to Earl, heard it from him. I know several are trying it though so figured I would. And to hear University of Florida is looking into it also is reassuring that there is probably something there.
when you dont have fuel for thd smoker you can blow the air from the smoker on the bees and calm them a little because the smell of smoke is still there.
Your 1st & 3rd hives look good. You might want to check your 2nd hive better. Somethings wrong with the queen. Look at eggs & brood. No bees at top of hive, not taken pollen patty down, & maggots in patty are a red flag. Requeen.
That hive is gone, didn’t have time to manage it and ended up with a laying worker. Bummer, but that’s the joy of traveling for work and only having a specific amount of time for Beekeeping.
You are being too hard on yourself and the bees. If you try more to enjoy working with the bees you might not be so uptight and forget things. I am praying you feel safer around your bees.
Sorry about the Premiere all. . UA-cam must have gotten buggy. . Anyways, here is the video ! !
So interesting with the peppermint candy
Hope the peppermint works out for you. It's amazing the results we've been hearing so far! Thanks for sharing!

Thanks Regina. . I'll be bottling later today so you know what that means. 🐝
All three colonies looking great. It’s game on!!!
Oh yeah. . It's about to get real fun here soon. Can't wait. Thanks for watching Bruce.
This was fascinating. Thank you!
Glad you enjoyed it! Bees are so darn amazing aren't they. .
Great video! I find the peppermint trick intriguing. I made sure we were subscribed so we could follow and see how they work.

Hey Hey Brian. Love the hives. My brother in SD says big die off of hives there.
Oh no. . From what i heard in Ohio, there was a 55% loss. Very sad.
@@CastleHives so sad. I hope my girls are good when we get back to WY
The 3 hives you have are looking strong. Hope the Peppermint works for you. The weather is looking good for you.
They are looking really good. We'll see how the Peppermint works out. Crossing my fingers.

Hives looking strong!!!! Spring has sprung!!!! Thanks Brian!!!
Thanks Rodney. .
Girls are looking strong! Glad to see you are finally warming up.
Wow Bee Castle looking great! Now on to the Poly Hive.
That colony has done great ! !
I like that.
It did work well.
Great job Earl for the help with hive beetles. Thanks for the update Brian.
You bet. . I'm excited to see how the candies work.
Goin to try peppermint too
Tnx for sharing
It worked really well for me.
I might have to put a bag of peppermint per hive down here in GA.
Haha. . True. I think a few others are using it down that way. I'll have to ask how much and let you know.
Another good one. I don’t know how you opened those peppermints with the gloves on. Lol
The Guardian gloves are actually not bad. They have a softer palm so it makes working hives much easier than the old style leather. Highly recommend them if you ever get another set.
Colonies looking good. Enjoyed the video. Hope the peppermint works. Anything to control beetles. Thanks
Thanks. . I think this is the strongest they've looked in the beginning of April. And I agree, anything to control SHB. .
Hives are looking awesome Brian! Great video!
Thanks 👍

Yup, it's working perfectly fine now.
Bummer the Premiere didn't work.
I like that utility bag you carry to the apiary. Still haven't tried the peppermint, but need to. The swifter sheets are more of a pain than they are worth.
That bag makes it nice. has my marking pens, hive tools, frame holders, etc etc. Its like a 1 stop shop when I do inspections.

I learned very fast that you have to watch those patties closely. And if they don't consume it, get it out fast.
They are doing great 😊🐝🐝🐝🐝 pretty soon you can do splits 😊
Very soon yeah. I think the supplements helped.

In the Poly hive they get on top of the frames and under the inner cover and the Bees can't get to them. It's like they wrangle them there.
You can add peppermint oil to sugar water
Good idea. ! !

Never knew that trick. Thanks
I wonder if strong peppermint extract like that used to make the candy would work? Drop on corners of inner cover?
Hmm. . I wonder. I know that University of Florida is looking into this so we'll see what research comes out.
Use Ian pollen Patty recipe won't get hive beetles in your patties plus very noticeable difference in build up

@@CastleHives never heard of the peppermint before but I've been experimenting with tea tree oil in my pollen pattys. Hope it works!
Eww!!! Those SHB in the patty!!!
Nasty. .
Marshmallow peeps kill small hive beetles
Oh cool. . Never knew that.
Mice don’t like peppermint either.
Added bonus. .
