Just perfect, Scott. Very thoughtful presentation. All styles -- clean, over driven and dirty; neck, middle and bridge positions. Who could ask for more? Both the A3's and 52's should work for me as I play those wonderful jazz standards of past decades. Brought a smile to my face when you ventured into "Red Sails In the Sunset" during your demos. Thanks for making my decision a LOT easier!
Thanks David! Were you hearing “Red Sails in The Sunset” at the picked Jazz part?? That section was actually the Bridge section of “Nearness of You”… I’m inspired to learn Red Sails now though!
Wow, the 52's are sooo dynamic and responsive. Liked the A3 as well but they're a little "quacky" for me at times. Just ordered a set of the 52's to put in a chambered ash tele I'm building, thanks to this great comparison video! Thank you!
Thanks for this mini series. I love the vintage’s tones the most, easily sound closest to the lower output sounds I look for in pickups to let your amp and fingers do a lot of talking.
Gotta say, one of the things I really appreciate about the Special T bridge is that its high output makes the neck + bridge position sound waaaaay better. I had a normal 7.2K stock Fender bridge in there before, and with a 6.3K Royal T in the bridge, the middle positions sounded really quacky and funky, which isn't what I'm going for most of the time. I put a Special T in the bridge that read 8.3K on my multimeter, and the in between position sounds more like the neck + bridge on position on something like a Les Paul. Really, really beautiful. They Royal T neck is really, really excellent on its own, btw. It sounds way more like a Strat than the demos I watched made me think it would. The John Frusciante sort of Strat, not the Lethal Weapon soundtrack sort of Strat.
Agreed, a more powerful bridge gets a really sweet middle. For a Tele I really do like the quacky in general but yeah that Royal T gets finicky with the vintage in there for a fussy quack. I'm definitely doing the Royal with the special in the next video... Maybe I'll do it with the J-Street as well. Haha, lethal weapon stratty...
I couldnt make the Royal T work w my vintage bridge. As a matter of fact the Royal T neck pickup in the end didnt work for me. It didnt deliver what i hoped for being a great combination of tele and strat. It fell in between the cracks..
I'm a total convert to A3 in Fenders. Re-wound some Gibsn P90's with A3 recently and they are also equally bursting with overtones and all those yummy extra frequencies you just don't get from A5 and A2.
Thanks for doing this! Appreciate the time and work put into it. Very cool! Been debating the Royal T, and it was great to hear it against these other tones. Think I'm still leaning that way... I think...
Great video's I've seen them both on the telecaster Lollar pickups. The A3, 52 & Super were the 3 pickups that stood out to me & was also impressed with the Royal T from the 2 video's. Thanks for sharing I'll have to pickup a bridge & neck Lollar pickup maybe A3 bridge & 52 neck.

@@4CloudySky hey, I saw this initially but it’s not in my queue for some reason. I have an antiquity 1 set I want to compare this summer against the 52s (Bridge is A2 like the 52). Love this video. The comments prove that tone os subjective, bc I didn't have a clear winner but a clear loser in the vintage set, which others seem to love. That's the beauty of gear!!! 🙂
Just ordered the A3 set because of this video. Thanks for helping me decide on pickups. This was bar none the best comparison I could find on Lollar pickups.
Old video, but FWIW if anyone sees this: the Vintera road worn telecaster I bought used came with a Duncan La Brea bridge pickup (AlNiCo 4) and Lollar Royal-T neck pickup. They balance well together, and the La Brea may be my favorite bridge telecaster pickup, it's very musical sounding to me. The Royal-T (AlNiCo 5) sounds more like a strat than tele prehaps, and I know some players used to put strat pickups in the neck position on telecasters (they are a little larger, so enlarging is needed). I like a good telecaster neck pickup that still has the twang of a telecaster, like the pickups on my Shijie telecasters. They seller included the original pickups with the deal, which are supposedly pretty hot, like the Tex/Mex they used to use perhaps?
Great video 👍 i am trying to find a telecaster bridge thats close to the jimmy page led zeppelin 1 sound and have heard that the lollar vintage T is close in sound would you say this is accurate as you have heard this pickup in person ?
Man, really hard to say! So many variables between him recording that and us hearing it, and I don’t really know how hot the wind/mags were on his Tele pups. I really go for what Pickup inspires me the most, rather than comparison to guitar tones from my favorite records.
Question- I understood your issue with the Vintage T neck and bridge not complementing one another as far as volume or output. Would you advise me to not combine the Vintage T bridge with the 52 neck? I mean, would that widen the divide even further? I need answers because I'm stressing out about which combo to put in my tele.
Honestly that combo sounds good to me! I think teles are always a little better when the bridge is a little hotter than the neck or at least close to it. The 52 neck I think would give the vintage bridge a little illusion of boost.
Thanks for the excellent review. With video 2 I was all for the vintage neck but here I see it is dark. Would an a3 in the neck and special t in the bridge make sense or the output is too different?
I would like that combo.., I typically like my Bridge to be hotter/thicker than the Neck anyhow. Those A3 pickups cut nicely though, so should be an interesting combo!
