If I might elaborate on that: Jay is the perfect combination of well spoken, straight to the point, informative and an excellent player and actor hired to sell this particular brand of pickups. Wow. I like to swap pickups every once in a while for fun. Nothing, not one single little thing in the intricacies of R&D development of pickups should ever warrant a price like this. From a business point of view, I kind of respect it tbh: just ask a crazy price and a bunch of people will believe it's _gotta_ be worth it, right?
im sure he does both as most working musicians do, piecing together their living. the idea of the "rockstar" who only makes his living playing in a band you recognize by name, is virtually dead. seems like a pretty killer session guy
I love that in between position of the jazz set. It's close to a strat. Perfect for funk and the 80s West Coast pop/soul a la David Pack/ James Ingram.
If I was selling pickups, you'd be the one I'd want to demo them. Super nice personality, crazy playing and technique, very fun. Knowing the tones, priceless. I am a new builder and will definitely consider Tone Specific.
I really liked the punchy set...I am just starting out my journey and starting it on a Tele copy that will require new pickups as I advance. I'm mostly a Classic Rock/Blues Rock/ Southern Rock fan, so I think the punchy or blues sets are more in my wheelhouse. This video really has helped me with what I may be looking for in the future. Thanks.
Fuuuu... barely a minute in, and you remind the world why you're like the most exciting players to listen to! Astig! Pro - straight to the point. No fluff. Straight up ear goodness!
This is a GREAT video. The pickups all sound very different. I’d get the 52 Twang for originally Tele sounds and 51 Jazz for a second Tele to play… jazz. I like the Rock ones too, but I’d stick with a Strat for that kind of sound. Again… fantastic video (and killer playing man… super talented!). Edit: Holy moly, these are expensive pickups! They’re all $395 in October 2023. Yikes!
I'm putting the tele together right now , Ash body, Rosewood neck.. I played mainly Progressive heavy stuff but I love the cleanliness ofbguitar-amp... and it found through 30 years and change of playing that I like lower output pickups I use Bill Lawrence for years and when you measure them there are below there sometimes 10 ohms and less, Dime bag knew ;) great video gonna view the others now.....so many choices
Thank you for demonstrating the clean sets. I've noticed UA-cam guitarists often start with overdriven sounds and only get more distorted as their videos progress. That, and the posturing statements about their loudness and gigging, make videos like yours more appreciated. Peace.
Damn son, dude knows how to play! My vote: Jazzy ..surprising considering I came into this almost sure I would dig the Punchy one the most. Go figure? Sounded slick can't lie.
I got what was at the time called something like their Country for Tele set and have never looked back. Whatever they have created now has got to be great as well. Thanks Jay.
Really nice man. You bring those pickups to life. It's all about the twang when it comes to the tele for me. I have plenty of guitars, but I have four sets of pickups for my tele. :) Pole magnets, bottom magnets, over wound and under wound at the bridge. Mine is cut for a P90 at the neck and the staple pickup rules. I hate muddy pickups, they go straight into the "not quite ready to throw them out" parts box.
Great series of videos Jay, thanks. I always enjoy watching you play a Tele. My preference would be Twangy, and I enjoyed hearing your brief version of Sleepwalk with the help of the Bigsby.
I'm a 41 years old man from Argentina and i'm recently discovering the telecaster sound and country music. Man it's difficult. Wish had a teacher to learn that technic you use in the twangy.
I know you have read all the complimentary comments, but dang man can you play!!! I am just a lifelong beginner and I know you have touch and feel and one heck of an ear to have developed your chops.
Great video 👍 I would choose the punchy because those fit my style of playing best ! I run the Seymour duncan qourter punder in my bridge on my 1962 Rosewood Ash body telecaster. It has high crisp tone and its must to beef it up. So there you have my choice 👌 Best regards from Scandinavia Sweden 🇸🇪
Nice review man. They all sounded really good. I'd personally lean towards the Bluesy set being that I like to play blues and it still has that classic tele sound.
I chose tex mex for my tele, appeared to be the hottest tele set from post-sea-BS Fender! lol. They're good at being heavy rock'n'roll on 10v- and about 7-9 on tone. turn the volume down, the tone up and you can dial great twang sounds.
1. As a player, JLJ is a beast. Mad props. 2. The genre-specific playing sounds good on the pickups named after that genre, but that doesn't help distinguish between the pickups. WIth Jay playing, I'll bet jazz sounds great on the "Punchy" pickups and Blues sound great on the "Twangy". 3. I get dizzy keeping the adjectives straight: creamy, hollow, pillowy, quacky, spongy, steely, spanky. LOL.
Firstly, I need to apologize for robbing you. I've been stealing from you like crazy. I've been copping your licks from these videos for a lonnnnng time, this video will keep me busy for hours,weeks.. I just copped that 50's song "Sleepwalk" from your twangy demo..THANK YOU! You made my evening.just got a new M300 Reverb I'm playing with, that song sounds mint!
Great video, I just built a blackguard tele and I'm not sure what I want to put in it, you're enthusiasm descriptions and playing was phenomenal , this may take a while, I liked them all 😳, thanks 👌
That punchy set is fantastic on leads, they got that close and upfront tone, from like early zeppelin records. Jazz set is a close second, the cleans on that pick-up are just a chef’s kiss moment. I would love a mix match set there. Punchy on the bridge, jazzy on the neck. Winner…
Did he just... Did he just sleepwalk with harmonics? Damn.. After a few explanations.. Ok dude.. Now you just flexin.. I wish i was that good.. Respect!
That bluesy and punchy pickups are quintessential to teles, and brilliant. For me, though, has to be the jazzy. Especially with the clarity in the neck pickup.
That point made with punchy about cutting through a band I think great point never mentioned enough with pickups or amps sound etc , all of them sound very good my favorites are 1 the Twangy for great Tele sound , 2 Punchy , Jazz 3 and the blues set but I think could live with any of them . Yes great guitar playing sure adds to all Thanks !
Man, I love to see all this love for Telecasters! I honestly can’t afford to buy Fenders, but I have an 8yo Squier in vintage butterscotch, which I’m putting pickups into it from a 2021 model Bullet Telecaster, and I have an Artist clone, which has dual humbuckers in it, and I’m building a Tele kit in zebra wood and using Tonerider Hot Classics, and I now have a thin line clone which I’ll probably eventually throw new pickups into. I’d really like to build a Nashville Tele with a tremolo bridge in a relic style, and I’d love to build a John 5 signature copy which uses the 3 humbuckers. One day I might be able to afford a Tele, I’d like an 80’s model in butterscotch, or blonde, but I’m a lefty so it won’t happen. I’m already planning out a build on a sea foam green vintage style with binding, and a bunch of trick parts, and probably a Strat neck, just for something different lol.
Man, with all the piece-parts and supplies you're getting to build those other Tele clones, you can probably afford to buy one. Have you added up all the money you've spent on those builds? I'm on my second build now and just the cost of the raw ash body and the unfinished maple neck set me back about $300. Then there's all the finishing supplies (lacquer, sanding materials, etc.), the hardware, and the pickups.
Magnificent playing! I have many Telecasters - all with slightly different sounds-making a choice of these four pickup combos more difficult because I first have to identify what's missing from the instrument sounds I have. Each demo led me to say - "yeh I could use that"...then the next demo and "yeh" again. So I'm more perplexed than clear on anything. However - first inkling is to go punchy. I think the added power would add an element to my Tele sound spectrum. Very preliminary thought however. Your playing makes me want to crawl into a hole and never come out. (40 years of string wrestling). Thanks for the video
I liked those Twangers but I think you sold me on the Blues. Especially when you said Tube Screamer and fuzz. Nicely done! The Strat video was really good so I came back for the Tele. I think a Tele will be my first build. Those blues pups will be the voice.
God damn son! That's some nice playing!!!! Debating putting in some Fender gen4 noiseless pickups in my Tele. I don't want it to sound like a Strat, I have a Strat for that, but they seem to sound like a Tele still but warmer a bit, which I really like. Anyone else use these? Opinions?
Man, this guy right here is a PLAYER!
He is an impressive player. I’d like to hear him say more by playing less. Too much flash is like too much spice.
Ha ha, I want him to shred MORE with that beautiful clean tone
Jay is the perfect combination of well spoken, straight to the point, informative and an excellent player. Wow.
Really appreciate it!

The Energy I get from watching this video is overwhelming, I have to pause and take 30 seconds rest every 2 minutes
This guy is like a steam roller... too much energy for me personally.
@@quantametric good to know
Twangy and surf is why I bought a Telecaster. I grew up with those sounds…Thanks for the great demos.
Dude, you don't need to be selling pickups, you need to be filling auditoriums.
im sure he does both as most working musicians do, piecing together their living. the idea of the "rockstar" who only makes his living playing in a band you recognize by name, is virtually dead. seems like a pretty killer session guy
Awesomely talented no doubt
They all sound amazing and that mainly is because of your great playing. You could make a toilet seat with strings sound good
I know, it doesn’t matter what he plays, he is an absolute wizard
I love that in between position of the jazz set. It's close to a strat. Perfect for funk and the 80s West Coast pop/soul a la David Pack/ James Ingram.
Yes
Dude! You rock! Great playing! You really understand the slight differences in sound and know how to break them all down very well!
Wow. Best product demo playing I’ve ever heard. Seriously. Not just skill, but entertaining, informative, and to the point.
If I was selling pickups, you'd be the one I'd want to demo them. Super nice personality, crazy playing and technique, very fun. Knowing the tones, priceless. I am a new builder and will definitely consider Tone Specific.
That first tele is gorgeous. I love the look of Bigsbys on a tele.
this guy is nuts , that’s triple harmonic to mimic the sleepwalk slide guitar was insane at 2:50
Thanks :)
I came back to this. I just love the way you play! About to build a Tele copy with students at school as they complete their projects.
set speed to 0.5 to make him sound and look like he just returned from a pretty wild pub crawl
LMFAO! I had to set it to 0.25 just to be able to see his fingers moving.
Holy Crap. I just did that and busted a gut! I didn't even know you could.
He sounds normal at 0.75.
Dude he sounds plastered lol
@@chasefairchild8790 the only thing missing is him giggling for no reason at all

He’s a monsta! Wow. Impressive! Love his playing and energy.

Bro I watched for the pickups as I’m building a tele but holy crap did you have me roped in with your playing. You are unreal.
Thank you for taking the time to put this up, it's very helpful and your playing is phenomenal!

All nice sounding! Those Jazzy ones were nice and creamy for sure!
love that you actually enjoy what you are playing. that makes the review way more useful.. real. thanks :)

wow that is hands down the best playing during a tone demo ive ever heard wowowowow
I really liked the Jazzy. Love those tones. Thank you for the examples.

Great video. I have just put a Dimarzio chopper T in my Hansen Tele. Game changer! For a covers band it gives you everything.
Really nice man. You bring those pickups to life. It's all about the twang when it comes to the tele for me. Ah man, and I love the dedicated video you did on the Twangy set. Heaven!
Thanks so much! They definitely have sizzle for days :)
Nothing better than watching a demoer enjoy playing the guitar!
That was great.

Panalo..astig..galing mo bro..good job..i kinda love to have different telecasters..thanks for this nice pick ups/guitar eviews..keep it up
Yes! I've been waiting for this one…
I love the sound of the jazz set. But if I was to put a set in my guitar it’d probably be the blues set. I really enjoy that sound when playing.
Only 90k views in 2 years?
One of the few videos that let’s the playing do the talk.
Hell yeah, it's fantastic! This totally just speaks the language.

I like the curly maple on the first tele you've played, thanks for demoing these I've been looking for a good set of PUPS to upgrade my mim 50's tele
WOW to that playing, great vid.
I like the punchy pickups, for the hard rock stuff. I love my blues, don't get me wrong, but I play classic hard rock as well.
Was the last set "Punchy"..Seymores Quarter Pounders???
I love the way you play. I'm looking at building a Tele kit, and decorating it with antique advertising.

Thanks for your videos! Good job, man!
