    Ryan from the band Who Shot John, @WshotJ, swung by and dropped off his guitar for me to swap the neck pickup into his custom blackguard.
    He found the perfect guitar that is full of mojo but the neck pickup was just a bit too squashy and bassy for him. He decided to swap the pickup from a ‪@seymourduncan‬ to a ‪@TheFendercustomshop‬ #twistedtele.

    I'm in my mid 60's now and I'm going to share my recipe for the best tele neck pickup I've ever wound. 8000 counter clockwise turns with 43 gauge plain vintage wire, .187 alnico 5 poles with south polarity. 7.8K, 2.01Henries, .026 farads. As far as store bought goes, I think the Rio Grande tallboy is a very special tele neck pickup. Enjoy

      It will be dark and get muddy with gain.

    • @ememe1412
      @ememe1412 Рік тому +1

      Best one I wound is 5mm mixed magnet alnico 3 & 5, north up, 8.5k clock wise turns, 8.1KR.... bass cut tone pot on concentric dual and volume (wired like an LP, bridge with treble cut)... Crank up gain and roll bass pot for thick creamy neck, easy woman tone. Clean, tweak pot and it gets close to an acoustic...

      Im probably going to change the neck in my AO 50's, bridge went asap as it was weak as piss, noisy and microphonic AF, pretty disappointing for a premium Fender Tele.I could live with the lower output, the noise and microphonics not so much. I replaced the bridge with a locally produced hand wound jobby, he calls it a broadcaster. I think its a3, flat pole and 50% hotter than the fender jobby at around 9.5k. Much quieter. Ill probably get him to make me one for the neck as well. Necks usable but it does feel a bit weak with the much hotter bridge now.

      I think Fender nailed it with the 64 neck pickup. I don't know what the recipe is besides the 7.4 - 7.7K-ish resistance (I've got 4 of them in 4 different Teles), but it is the clearest and punchiest Tele neck pickup I have found that still sounds like a Tele and not a Strat pickup.

    I've been playing for over 50 years, had plenty of guitars. The Tele really turned my head around upon seeing the movie "Crossroads" back in the mid 80's. THAT was THE tone. Holy Crow.
    I found out pretty quickly that not all Tele neck p'ups are equal. Fortunately I met a truly talented luthier, Toru Nittono, who turned me onto Harmonic Design p'ups, a boutique shop out of Bakersfield, CA. He told me to get their Chromotone neck p'up for Tele. I did. He was right. I have never looked back. Sort of like finding the perfect woman to marry.

    IME, adjusting pickup height can change the pickup sound for the better. For example, my old tele neck position sounded muddy and dark when i first recieved it. After lowering the neck pickup nearly flush with the pickguard, it vastly improved the clarity. 🤙🏼

    The trick on long PUP wires is to twist them like like a licorice and they will route through the guitar easily, once through - you can untwist to desired lengths for connecting.

  • @gezor20
    @gezor20 3 роки тому +3

    @Jeremy Sheppard 4:50 hey, just a thought. Before pulling out the old wires, how about connecting it with an unused piece of wire -or a thin piece of rope or something - so you pull that inside the tunnel when you pull out the old wire - now connect that to the wire of the new pickup -> this way you can just pull the new pickup wire through easily, without having to push and wiggle it through.

    I have the Jerry Donahue SD pickup in my Tele with a Twisted Tele in the neck position. I'm not sure all SD pickups are wired the same way, but I had to swap the leads on the Twisted Tele in order to be in the same polarity as the JD bridge. I don't think I saw you play in the middle position on this video? I hope you checked that before it went out because if out of phase it would sound rather weird. Anyway, take care, and have a good one!

    The yellow wire coming off the neck pickup can be used with a 4-way switch. This allows you to have a fourth position where your pickups are wired in series. This gives you a very full, rich, slightly louder tone. To my ears it almost sounds like a wide range humbucker.

    • @Luthiart
      @Luthiart 2 роки тому

      @@ericmojave6061 The ground wire caries no signal, it's just there to ground the cover. It has no connection to the pickup at all. And you don't need an additional wire for series. You just need the two wires (one hot and one ground) coming from the pickup. Most of the time, the cover is grounded to the pickup itself (which is then grounded to a pot). There's really no need to have a long ground wire for the cover.

    • @ericmojave6061
      @ericmojave6061 2 роки тому +1

      @@Luthiart right, and that’s the case when you’re wiring to a 3 way switch. I’m no expert, but I used that 3rd wire to wire my 4 way switch and it didn’t cause any problems. You’re making your point as if it’s the only way to wire a guitar. The fact is that it’s very common to wire a long wire from the cover to the ground and you can use the black and white leads to wire to the switch. I’ve done this, as well as many others. You may be right, and I wouldn’t dream of arguing that, but there is no need to be a no it all. Myself, and many others have had success using 3 wires for the neck pickup to wire a 4 way switch. Your way, I’m sure is correct, but you don’t have to act like you’re right and everyone else is wrong because you know “it doesn’t work that way”

    Great job on this one. The original is the classic tele neck, they’re always a little woofy/wooly. The twisted tele is exactly what it says, a tele pup that sounds like a strat, which I think overall it’s more versatile and easier to work with. I have one in my tele and love it paired with my nocaster bridge. Same setup as danish Pete’s purple tele. Fender should sell the nocaster/twisted CS set. Or offer the ability to mix and match their pickups to do custom sets.

      This guitar had replaced the original neck pup ( Tex Mex) apparently with a Seymour Duncan.

      lower the bass side, it'll let your treble and mids ring out more, alot of people make the mistake of raising and raising until they're loud but now your pick ups magnetic field is pulling you strings out of tune and wrecks your intonation, not just just that it blends alot better and still lets you retain the spank in the middle position, you also have your amps eq settings to help tweak minor things

    Being a blues Tele player for a long time now (60+ years), I thought the original pup had way more personality to work with. In my view it’s more likely about settling on the right strings for the player. But heh, if a pup swap makes a player feel it, who am I to judge. Go forth and rock.

    I thought my Lindy Fralin Blues Specials were 'special'...and they are...especially the bridge...but I dropped a set of Lollar Special T's in another guitar (same make/model/etc) and was even MORE impressed with them. I disconnect neck from tone pot...helps with clarity/output. Prefer Lollar neck....Fralin bridge. Lollar bridge was a bit bright/thin. Lollar neck is fuller than Fralin. Both sound better than Fender's new Pro II tele pups (which are also quite nice).

    Because the wires are unscreened, you need to twist them tightly to reduce hum. I wonder why people never do that.

    I think there are probably more ‘good’ tele pickup offerings around now than for any other guitar. I’ve used everything from Don Mares ($300+) to some of the new Easter European winders ($50) and my conclusion is, as great as pickups like the Mares are, there really is no need to spend big to get a great sound. I think it’s very easy to be snobbish on the subject, I’ve certainly been guilty of it, but I’m now firmly of the belief that you don’t have to go for big names and high prices to get great tone.

      I agree. It's always surprising how different they can sound in different guitars and wood combos, more money doesn't mean more better for sure.

      Cavaliers are excellent pickups. I’ve had a set (Nashville Lion bridge with a Fat Lion neck) for a few years now and they’ve seen higher priced pickups come and go. For around $120 they can’t be beat imo, especially considering all the options he offers.
