- This is the first video of a start-to-finish watercolour demonstration, uploaded in two parts. I am painting a scene from Poole Harbour in Dorset, illustrating a range of techniques and building on my previous tutorial "Controlling The Wash' - you can view that one by following the link below:

"Years" ago, my art instructor stated that watercolor artists had to attempt 2,500 painting to become an effective artist. Meaning, practice, practice, practice...then, you can become successful! Money was a factor, so choosing one art, oil, acrylic, watercolor was a factor! I greatly appreciate your posts and tutorials. Your style is inspiring for a senior citizen wanting his youth back and growing in the fine arts! Thanks!❤

While I was watching this video (1 June 2022) I glanced out of my window and saw exactly such a sky - rich blue above with white streaks of cloud, and below a paler cerulean blue with greyish patches. Ok, it was over some fairly ordinary urban houses, but it was still beautiful. And now I know how to paint it. Many thanks, Oliver!

I cannot tell you how much I appreciate your help. I’m a long time painter, self taught and it took years of trying in order to be able to get a decent painting. There was no internet back then and, I learned mostly from books and practice. I’ve now been painting watercolor over thirty years and still learning. Thank you ever so much for this.

I am a retired surgeon living in New England . I had dabbled in portrait drawing with pencil 60 years ago but didn’t continue. Who knows why. I recently took a local course which, unbeknownst to me, was sketching in watercolor. I had no interest in either watercolors or landscape. And then I came across your tutorials. Besides being an accomplished painter, you are also an exceptionally good teacher. Of course part of that is your being British. I have an absolute obsession with listening to how you Brits use the entire English language. We Americans are too used to using short cuts. Thank you for inspiring me to get into watercolor landscapes. We in New England have an unlimited number of beautiful landscapes. I don’t have enough time left to become really accomplished at painting, but I will use that time to enjoy the journey. Thanks again.

Thanks Donald. 'Accomplished' at painting need not be a goal, although that is certainly subjective. I'm sure you will have plenty of time to create work that captures the beautiful landscapes of New England.
Thank you Olly for allowing us to look over your shoulder as you work, and watch the colours being mixed and applied, with hard soft/hard edges - great explanations. It's fascinating! I was surprised by the brush sizes that you used for most of it, reassuringly medium sized, so no scary big wash brushes 😬 Also extremely useful to watch you keeping that bead wet, and working down and across, something I have to practice more of. Great part 1, now I'm off to watch part 2 of Poole Harbour ! 👍😀

If you are ever wondering whether you talk too much, don't. I need to know what is going through your mind before, during and after you paint. It makes a big difference in how I see what I am trying to accomplish. Your paintings have a very light, easy and relaxed look about them. You get the mood of the subject very well. It is the most important thing, I think.

Having been a computer programmer for 30 years, breaking away from living in a world of black/white, true/false, 1/0, everything exact and robust is not an easy transition to water colour., which I have been doing since retiring 2 years ago. Up till now my water colours have resembled my code...exact, detailed and exhausting. I am obsessing with minute detail of buildings, trying to make it look exactly like the original. They look ok, but I need to move on to a less controlled and easy going style if I am to progress and enjoy painting a wider range of subject. So, having watched numerous YT videos, I have been fortunate to find your videos and specifically these 2 which I feel I have learned and can relate too more so than any others that I have seen. So, I'm gonna change, I just need practice in being much looser and hold back from detail. It's gonna take a total change of mindset for me from a world of black and white into a world of ever changing tonal values, whispy bits and merging slodges. Thank you for your videos.
Very interesting! I have an analytical mind, coming from a mathematical family and am also very much drawn to detail. That's not necessarily a bad thing, although much of the watercolor world will tell you that it is! It all depends on what you see and how you feel about the scene you're painting: I love the details and colours in a landscape more than the big shapes and tonal values and that's why my style has developed the way it has - impression and detail together.
Yes, it's the "impressionist" mind that I need to develop and that totally lack in my results thus far. Thanks for your response.

Great painting! I'm kinda binge watching while I doodle with my paints. I try and apply some affects you do, without making a commitment to a whole painting. I don't know why I do that.
Don't stop! I still doodle with my paints every week.......it's one of the best ways to become comfortable with the medium without that pressure of having to complete a finished painting.

I am thrilled to have discovered your videos, your work is stunning. Your video length is perfect, don’t change it, it’s how I’m learning how techniques are accomplished. Do you take frequent rests during a painting to come back with fresh eyes, or would that disrupt your creativity for that particular painting?
I often take short breaks as I'm waiting for areas to dry - especially at the start of the painting, when I establish most of the main washes wet-on-wet. I never feel that this disrupts my workflow or creativity, although I know painters who do find this to be an issue.
Regarding using more than 1 blue in a painting...I say mud is a myth. You can mix every single color on your entire palette and the result is the most complex and interesting neutral imaginable. Mud is usually the result of fiddling on the paper's surface too much. Great tutorial.

Oliver - excellent video. Looking forward to part two in a few minutes. A question on your decision to glaze the foreground. Since you made the decision before painting anything, you must have had experience with the technique employed and decided to use it before seeing anything painted. Curious as to why you thought so. Along that same line, you explained your rational for using raw sienna, but why would you have chosen that color to begin with, rather than say a pale green? It is a grassy area you are painting. Is this imply a favored glaze that you employ to get a certain look into the painting? Thank you in advance for any thoughts.

Which kind of watercolour paper do you use?
I think the 'one primary' rule that I recently was sticking to should have a disclaimer that it is for when you are learning the basics of color mixing and how colours gradate and interact. Once you know these things well, mixing a cool blue from a warm one only serves to get a less intense version of the colour you want, which does help bring union to the colours but if the goal is a wider gamut and you need the intensity your only holding yourself back by being so rigid.
