Absolutely such a great help just starting I'm 68 and am so glad I found your channel last night. Sat up all night binge watching. Thanks for all your help and hard work 👍 ❤️
My favorite painting was a scene similar to that. I did it in high school 40 years ago, and it is hanging in my bathroom now. I really enjoy your videos and how much you see in your subjects that most people would overlook.
As a beginner artist, idea of a sketchbook has been on my mind. There’s a hesitation on what I would paint outdoors as there are so many things. Through this video you’ve helped break this down and showed us how to simplify, find a simple composition and have fun…while it’s an integral part of learning. You’re a wonderful teacher, thanks for the video
Commenting a bit late, but here's a recommendation for dealing with wind. Bring lots of binder or bulldog clips. I use a few clips to hold down the corners of my page. More clips keep the "finished" pages closed in the other side of the sketchbook. Another clip or two holds a shop cloth to dab the brush. I've also used a long rubber band to hold down the pages in wind. It's usually breezy here so I just assume I will need to manage flapping pages. This is a great sketching video for the encouragement provided. Sketching outside really does make me want to go out more and sketch more!
Sketching is one of the first things I consider. Order alongside shading. Everything begins it's natural flow once I begin. I like different sizes of paper. I'll try them all. Oliver is encouraging, thanks. 😊
Thank you for these videos, they are so helpful. I personally like yours extra because I am also left-handed, so it is easier for me to visualize the way the technique works.
I love you simplify mixing by using what you already had and add to it. It's quick and creates harmony without overthinking every individual color to use.
Merci beaucoup pour ces encouragements aux croquis rapides et pour les démonstrations … je vais essayer de mettre vos conseils en pratique. Bonne soirée.😊
Thank you so much Oliver for your introduction into building a watercolor sketchbook and how to use it. Myself, I do exactly have shown and I’ve doing this for several years. I use the journal as a means to testing subject matter for large scale paintings. Peace be with you my friend.
This was really lovely. I was inspired after watching it last weekend to go out a sketch along our riverfront, capturing the water, trees and parklands along the riverbank, and of course, one of the bridges. This is on style I normally work in but I think that is because it intimdates me. I see a lot of value challenging myself with the approach you demonstrated here.
This was a wonderful video, so helpful and inspiring! You brought up so very many points that we can absolutely relate to and that other teachers are not mentioning. Thank you🙏🏼❣You are a great teacher and artist.
This was nice encouragement to be a little more free with what I decided to do in my sketchbook. I think I've been trying to make it more of a "journal" type, but my problem is that I'm not very good (yet). So I'm never happy with my paintings, and that makes me hesitant to put anything down. Now I sit here with a pristine sketchbook but not making very much progress with my skills. I'm going to change that today.
Thank you Oliver, I really appreciated watching how you approach plein air work. I really love working outdoors but my results are never as good as those I produce at home. From watching you, I think I may be rushing too much. I work full time, so getting out to paint is something I have to squeeze in but I think I’m not doing it justice by taking shortcuts and rushing. I’m getting on in years so recording memories is important and when .I look at my plein air journals I recall such detail about that day. It is truly amazing how it seems painting acts like a video recording. Is that because of the detailed observation?
I notice you have one of those beautiful Fraser Price palettes. I got myself one a couple of wks ago for a bargain price, & in Dec intend taking it to Portugal where I’ll immerse myself in watercolour everyday, whatever the weather. Thanks for your always-helpful & enjoyable channel.
Your commentary about the different ways to utilize sketchbooks and your encouragement to simply enjoy the fun experience if sketching outdoors : so much appreciated! That paintbox you are using is fabulous! Can you tell us about it? Or provide a link?
Thank you for this very inspirational and helpful video. I see you are a fan of heavy metal palettes when painting plein air. I suppose they are more resilient than other types of palette. I've been considering buying that Loxley Heavyweight metal box palette, I love the combination of deep and flat mixing wells. I bought a cheaper, small, plastic pallete by Frank Herring, it also has deep wells. It's a handy pallete for outdoor sketching.
As I look back at my old sketches, I see a lot of disharmonious things from the past: the shape of a chair, a lampshade or an attempt to capture a likeness of someone. Adrian Hill in his book, How to Draw, encourages us to draw everyday objects from different angles, which I find very useful. I will have to buy myself a new sketchbook instead of focusing on ‘finished’ paintings. Thanks again.
I see a multicolor book in this video in your stack of painting materials and three of them on a shelf in your studio in other of your videos…is this a watercolor journal? A book you would recommend? If so would love to know more as your way of teaching is I aightful and very helpful…best wishes, MaryEllen Langieri
“It’s literally a background, that’s all it is”. Lots of good info and pointers in this video but this quote stood out as one of my faults is detailed backgrounds. I must remember that it’s only a background.
Your videos are excellent! However, with so many of us having busy schedules, I would have liked just the boat in one shorter video and the landscape in another video. I’m a Patreon subscriber and truly enjoy all your videos which I watch incrementally but would appreciate shorter ones as well. Thank you for considering.
Hi Oliver. Your sketchbooks look great but are way too polished to say so. Full of finished sketches. Mine are a mix and match of everything. Preliminary sketches, notes, notans, finished sketches, finished paintings, comments and notes and thoughts all into my sketchbooks. I use also simultaneously many different sketchbooks with some of them being on my desk and other in my bags. There was a time that I was trying to finish each and every sketchbook and I've even wrote the date I've started to sketch into each one of them but I didn't manage to keep up. The good thing though is that I can remember where is what so I don't lose the plot. But my sketchbooks are a very important part of my creative process and I don't care to put them in order because I don't want to interrupt the stream of my thoughts. And I don't show them in their entirety anywhere. I just show some of the sketches that I consider more interesting on my website. But never a whole sketchbook. My thoughts are mine and I don't want anyone to know them or evaluate them artistically or with any other way.
@@oliverpyle-ourlandscape4442 I mean that all the sketches are finished, all at the middle of the page or the spread pages with the same layout neat and in chronological order. A sketchbook that is suitable for presentation or even publishing too something that is good. I'm not saying that negatively. It is not bad to have everything in order. In fact I wonder how you manage to keep your sketchbooks so neat because I personally find that an impossible thing to achieve. My sketchbooks are in a complete and utter mess. There is no way to have f.e ten finished landscape sketches in a row in the same sketchbook because somewhere in between I switch from landscape sketching to some other idea that comes to my mind. A portrait or a botanical illustration, a notan for some other irrelevant painting along with some swatches and notes for something entirely different. I've joined btw your fantastic forum. It is a great idea to run a forum. It is so difficult to find nowadays a private place to talk about art. Most art discussions are taking place on social media where it is impossible to follow a discussion due to the way that social media platforms are constructed. I mean the unlimited scrolling layout. There is no way to find and follow a discussion in social media and I'm not either way the social media kind of person. I don't have time to retain social media accounts. The only place were I keep in touch with fellow artists is here because youtube though it is huge its subject oriented. You can comment and discuss under a video that has a very specific subject. Here we talk about sketchbooks elsewhere about paints etc. That works!
I find all the “curated” sketchbooks, like those you see on Instagram or here on YT, to be so contrived and pretentious. I want to see a real artist’s sketchbook, something created without the main goal or intention being to show it off.
Could listen to you talk the while day! Lovely voice and style. Your paintings, of course, are just gorgeous. Thank you Oliver
Je suis jaloux 😤😢😭

Well worth the rewatch. This is still one of my favourite of yours. I think I’ve watched it three times now.
Thank you! England is so beautiful &peaceful… from Florida USA
You wouldn't believe how homesick you make me......an anglo welsh Canadian! ❤😮 june
Oliver Pyle, respect from the fans and from me personally. Yes, you are right! The artist must have an album for daily sketches. Thank you!

ahh, if only i could get a painting to look anywhere near as nice as your quick sketch. Maybe some day.
I have learned so much from you in less than 2 weeks. Was struggling & given me ‘new lease’ to continue water coloring! 👏💥
Delighted to hear that - and thank you! Keep painting.
I love you simplify mixing by using what you already had and add to it. It's quick and creates harmony without overthinking every individual color to use.
I could listen to you all day.....LOL. Thank you for your brilliant advice.

Beautiful work. I find bull clips work well to hold down my pages in the wind❤️✨

I'm anxious to get started on a sketchbook. Thank you.
How lovely to see the sunshine and hear the waves and seagulls! I think sketching is not emphasized enough for beginners. Thanks!
It’s a vitally important part of the creative process.
Lovely. I find myself nodding my head along with you as you build your landscape. Very helpful. Thank you!
You’re very welcome
Your videos inspire me! Thank you!

I thoroughly enjoyed this. Thanks for sharing your process!
Me encanta su enseñanza y su manera de explicar. Aprendo muchísimo. Muchas gracias.

Whenever I see something like that next to a boat, my mind says crab pots so I think you got it. Crab pots or nets.
Yes, enjoyment!
So inspiring, beautiful sketches! Thank you!
A very nice and useful video, Oliver. Thank you so much for sharing, once again. Greetings.
Just joined your Patreon. Excited to support you and keep learning alongside you. 😊
If it is of some importance, I sketch every day and paint once a week, selecting from my sketch book.
I came to that conclusion this afternoon. I paint much better if I take the time to sketch.
Thanks so much. It’ll be definitely very useful to see how you build a painting from one of these gorgeous sketches!
hello i am i first water colour and loveing it and love your you tube so kind
Two lovely sketches and a lot of inspiration. Thank you!
Fabulous, thank you, Oliver!
Thank you❤❤
For some time I'm watching Oliver -as a non-native speaker of English- and now my accent changed LOL

Draw and sketch anything - it’s great advice as it sharpens the observation skills.
Love this - I’m also Jen and my brothers name is Matt 😊
Sea matter 😂. Lovely video thank you.
I like him, the jolly good J.W.Turner.

Fantástic explanation
When you do sketches, do you use pen or pencil and which ones do you use? Thank you for sharing with us.
Oops I just checked your blog and saw the info about the paintbox 😊
Fun hobby!
hi I live in Northumberland. i would love to go to any painting events with you.
You mention the 4 D's the first one being decisions, what are the other 3?
{[бъютифул а лэндскэйп}]^_^
What is the pallette you are using?
