Record crowds at many national parks

- Finding serenity can feel impossible, at Zion and more than a dozen other national parks, as record numbers of tourists and adventure seekers are drawn by the beauty - and driven outdoors by the pandemic. Correspondent Mark Strassmann braved the crowds at Zion National Park in Utah, which hosted 20,000 people in one day last month.
“CBS Saturday Morning” co-hosts Jeff Glor, Michelle Miller and Dana Jacobson deliver two hours of original reporting and breaking news, as well as profiles of leading figures in culture and the arts.

The problem with crowds is they leave a lot of trash and don't pick up after themselves..
The vast majority of hikers and campers take leave no trace seriously.
@Howard Webber .. No, I see it when I go to those places ie leftovers.. You have to know where to look..
Where there is human, there is Trash.
Besides that, when you go to a National Park it's not as bad.. But when you go for a walk in general like along side of a road or small park, it's there.. Driving down the highway you can see the trash along side of the highway.. Why do think they have Inmates from a Prison picking up trash along side of the highway..
Then there are those that clean out houses for money and then dump the Trash along side the road.. Or some vacant lot in some neighborhood that they don't live in.. Which becomes a eye sore for the people living in the neighborhood.. Then people like you point the finger at those people in neighborhood and think they are dirty people, when then they are not.. So who's the one that is judging and accusing..
@Howard Webber Do you even go out dude?
@@hugomontoya8587 Do you? Between 2020 and 2021 I primitive camped in 11 different federal and state-owned sites and saw no trash.
@@deer105 Wow! That's good luck and places where you've had responsible users. Depending on the areas and the trails I've been using the last couple of years I've experienced a broad range in terms of trash & such. Sometimes I only do a tiny bit of mooping, probably things that may have been dropped accidentally, and sometimes it can be quite a bit. Thankfully I do find that the further into back country I get the less trash I find.
If you enjoy spending time in nature there’s plenty of wilderness areas and areas of national forests, national monuments, and the info is out there to find in ways that used to be difficult.
National parks ONLY weekdays get out on the trail at sunrise for me. Disneyland or Walmart experience otherwise.
Ooh!!! This is a problem!!! Come on man!!! Please don’t spray paint these rocks!!! Don’t scratch them either!!!
I think we all know who it is spray painting the rocks.
Not hard to figure out. 🙄
@@notofthisworld5267
Who is it????
It boggles my mind that people think ahead enough to pack in cans of spray paint to the wilderness. What's wrong with trail mix and water in your pack instead?
I’ll always cherish going to Utah, Jackson Hole, Grand Teton and Yellowstone the end of October 2017. Ten days of non existent crowds. Felt like we had the areas to ourselves. No crowds and no traffic. Same thing when I visited Smoky Mountains in the same year. Key word is OFF SEASON.
Unfortunately southern Utah has a very slim offseason
Yes, but how long will that last before the masses find out and start doing the same?
@@BopjoWebDesign still you won't see many family with kids because of school/colleges session.
@@kaziahmed5509 True. We’re driving down the Oregon coast in Winter to avoid crowds. The weather may not be ideal, but it’s worth it.
It’s easy to ditch the mouth breather “bucket list dude bro” crowds… you just have to be imaginative and not see the outdoors as a “list” of things to “check off”
Wish people would support all kinds parks and be willing to pass measures that help our parks thrive. People who vote down park measures don't seem to have any problem with visiting, especially since Covid. So many don't respect our parks, fellow humans, or our planet.
Ick, no! I know my mountains. Wherever I see cars jam a lot with the people all doing the same thing, I go the total opposite direction. Nature is for solitude. I'm also really sick of picking up your litter everywhere I go. Humans are way too messy to have nice things.
Thank goodness for National monuments, National forests, and BLM land! Solitude in nature still exists, it’s just about looking in the right places
I live in a national park. Saguaro National Park West. Doesn't get better than that.
The beauty is spectacular in our NPs but there is now a low percentage (millions) of people that just don't get it and it's not just our NPs that are being affected. What goes through someone's mind when they throw trash at a waterfall, toss their used mask on a trail or in a hot spring, or write graffiti?? Selfish pigs!
I'm a local in Utah and it's been years since I've been to Zion NP due to the massive crowds there now. It really started to pick up traffic after 2010 when social media took off showing photos of travel life, etc.
Seeing the monuments defaced is honestly disgusting. What is wrong with people?!
Too damn many people in general at these places. Best to try going during the week to avoid the crowds.
Winter is the real answer. Arches was at capacity by 8:30am last Thursday
I spent almost 10 years in the area around Zions NP. Luckily it was before it was so crowded. Way before they had a shuttle. This sucks... Especially for the Locals.
I highly suggest hikes in other places that are equally beautiful and less crowded. There are tons of options to choose from all across our country with a little research.
If you really want to visit the national parks, try the weekdays when they are typically less crowded. Also, if you get up and on the trails at sunrise, you usually don't see many people. 😀
Don’t go in summer 🤦🏻♂️
Everyone wants to go in the summer. That's why I take vacations in the winter. We visited Zion, Bryce Canyon & Grand Canyon last December, it was nice & quiet 🤫
People destroying a priceless piece of the country such a shame. They need to gather people's information before they enter the park. Like scanning IDs and take a photo of them. If they destroy something we can come back at them with a expensive bill
Yep, our government can definitely be trusted with endless amounts of information for any excuse, they always use it fairly and you can trust them to do the right thing....lmao
Totally agree!!. I wish they could do what they do in Singapore to protect these pristine environment, if someone one get caught, a person would get a heavy fine or imprisonment
I say limit the number of visitors and require prior reservations to enter the parks. The parks are already overwhelmed by people. It’s only going to get worse.
They already do that
YES!!!!!We were at Zion NP yesterday and ppl were everywhere.
I caught someone flying their drone in Zion back in September.
And ? I do it all the time

I was one of those many travelers in September to Zion. I will say the park is handling the mass crowds beautifully. I got to shuttle before it started but they were rolling those busses like we we on mass transit. I counted 400 people before I actually got on the buss before their scheduled first run. There are places in and out of the parks to see without mass crowds. It’s the UA-cam and Instagram crowds doing the most popular locations. You can still enjoy , just be patient and bring your manners with you.
Sure sounds like more people have a lot more disposable income while complaining and wanting more ...and working less or not at all. What other countries have this "problem?"
It can't last. Eventually people have to pay the piper.
So glad I made it to Yellowstone before COVID
I’m in Acadia this week. Long hike today. Saw three other people 👏
We were there last week and the place was packed. We tried going early but everyone had the same idea so we went later in the day and it was much less crowded.
@@tomduley6357 more peaceful hikes are on the “quiet side” of MDI and Schoodic Peninsula

Social media had ruined a lot of experiences, unfortunately
Congress needs to invest in National parks. We need more national parks.
Yeah, just what we need is more big government land grabs. 😠
@dem Life so cute a 2 week account.
I'll support a wall and funding for Americans great wildlife.
If America is so racist why did 15k Haitians come here 2 weeks ago and 60k to 85k are on their way now?
Mathematically your opinion just does not match up with how many are trying to get here.
@dem Life Serves white people? That’s the most racist comment I’ve ever heard! Everyone is allowed into our parks!
@@rude1527 America is not rasict nation, this is a ridiculous lie fueled by hypocrite idiots. Our society has more rights & liberties than any other on earth
Hopefully more rangers get hired, sounds like things are rough and dangerous.
They need to limit the amount of visitors to all these places.
Sorry I cannot stand how people litter try to pet wildlife and think that they are the more intelligent animal
So true!
@Howard Webber why do you feel the need to make this political? Do you do that in random conversations in your everyday life? Seems a bit overboard
Like ants on a piece of discarded candy.
Makes my skin crawl.
Most images are not Zion, but many Western parks. We'd never go when crowds are there... We go to get away from people... Been too Zion sev. times, but 30+ yrs ago. Was small, isolated. It's been upgraded greatly since then, it was a very small, narrow, mini-Grand Canyon, cut by the Virgin River which empties into top of Lake Mead if there's enough water. Weird to have huge crowds, so go in off season. I think it's the population boom in Vegas. Visitors come from Vegas. Vegas' 1980 metro area pop. was 438,000. 2020 Vegas metro area pop = 2.3 million, gads...
... Many Thanks GOD for allowing us to visit pristine places in the National Parks in US 🇺🇸 👍 in the middle of a pandemic 🙏 ...
Keep it clean people
I live off blue ridge in North Carolina. This week is peak week for fall colors. But weekends are so crowded so I plan on picking my son after school and go look at them.
Just got done listening to an announcement that a person was killed at the Yadsen Valley Overlook ( sp ) overlook . Be careful and situationally aware .They didn’t give many details but they also have not found who did it . My condolences to the family. I pray justice is served. Praying the area is being searched..
I visited many national parks this year and its really sad because we saw alot of trash on the ground, people stepping on places they shouldnt, and going to dangerous areas just to get a good photo of themselves. People need to show more respect for the land and the animals when going out into nature
Good thing I went to a couple of these national parks during Covid
This is only going to get worse. It is a shame to restrict Americans from their public lands because they are too popular
A relatively few ruin it for all. We used to go rock hunting with rules, but there was always someone who brought along high powered noisy power tools and we got his left overs while he sold off the good stuffwe never had a chance to even try. He just used our club. In another town where we lived, the same thing. Now most of our great sites are closed.
The answer is MORE parks, and more funding for parks. There should be enough parks and park land for one billion visitors to not feel crowded and get a campsite without a reservation. There are plenty of worthy places, but a lack of access, and knowledge.
Instead the government has cut funding and reduced access. All the national forests in California were closed this summer. I'm sure this dramatically increased the crowds in California's National Parks. And now you have to have a reservations to not only camp but even visit Yosemite and John Muir National Monument. Exactly the wrong policies.
I’m afraid I will hardly go to National Parks anymore, even though I love them dearly. The crowds are too discouraging, with the long lines of cars, advance reservations for everything in the park (oftentimes a year ahead), and jostling people at every vista point, to say nothing of the disrespect shown by so many toward the environment and wildlife. We’ve all watched the UA-cam videos of people harassing bison or trying to get their picture taken with a bear, and we all seen the initials carved into ancient rocks or the trash strewn everywhere. I blame the iPhone and Instagram. People go to the parks now to get photos of themselves standing by a geyser or teetering on a cliff’s edge at the Grand Canyon. They seldom even look around them because they’re so busy with their phones. It seems so few go now to be quiet, to observe, to learn, to appreciate, and to feel wonder.
The past two years at Grand Teton and Yellowstone have been outrageously expensive. You have too booked six to nine months in advance. Car rentals are so expensive. However the national parks are wonderful and fun.
These days people are constantly seeking attention, as they look for an escape from themselves.
Can they put a capacity limit like at concerts so it doesn’t get this full? Because yikes the theme park vibe.
NOTHING LIKE LOVING THE EARTH TO DEATH....
🙈 The national parks are busy with people wanting reward money for capturing Brian Laundrie!!✌️#davesandersstepdaughter
At Narrows at Zion this year we had to walk around people in the river who were taking selfies and taking videos and were really just there to capture the moment instead of living in it. We had people push past us, or walk 4 in a line and slow down people behind them and not allow others through from the opposite side. They have no hiker etiquette because they arent hikers.
Mother Nature and I are intimately connected (as we all are) and I have never been a crowd type of person so it bums me out when I dont get to enjoy these places as much anymore. Forces me to find more secluded places which I dont mind doing. It just worries me that too much foot traffic can be disastrous.
After the clip was a commercial to visit national parks. Which is it?
"We need a new plague" - Dwigt Shrute
The population needs to be cut in half
Just implement a daily permit system. Cap it at a certain amount of people each day. Problem solved
Many of the parks, including Zion, already have them.
Limit entrance! We must also protect and never allow these lands to be privatized or developed. However, it’s understandable people want to be there, but it will be ruined, trampled, polluted if they don’t limit the visitors!
If Instagram didn’t exist- about half the people wouldn’t be there.
Went last year and I can tell you only about 1/5 of the visitors were American. It got so bad I just assumed those around me didn’t speak English
Why not raise the gate admission. Kick it up to $100 per car. It'll be more enjoyable and more $ for the parks. A win/win for everyone. 😊
NPS staff and Rangers are way understaffed. Period. In every way. Shameful.
Don’t complain because at one point everyone was begging people to visit the parks to keep big business out.
We visited Grand Teton and Yellowstone this past summer and by midday Disney would have been less crowded. We just offset it by getting up at 4:30am and getting in there. The wildlife is more active anyway. On the way back we went through Idaho and Utah and made an attempt to go to Arches. We couldn't even get close so we just went on in to Colorado. As others have said its still possible to get into the wilderness, you just need to enter into National Forests and there are plenty of isolated spots but dang. It was insane, especially Yellowstone. I'm glad we went, but it was really crowded.
Get rid of the cars
I went to Zion a few years ago and Moab and I met nothing but European people.
I live nearby and i have never met a European tourist

This is really over exaggerated... I went to Zion and Bryce Canyon just 2 weeks ago. Got to Zion at 10am and parked right at the visitor center Monday morning. No lines to get on the shuttle bus and the hikes weren't that crowded at all.
Just go on a weekday and get there sometime in the morning. You'll get parking inside the park and you won't have any issues with crowds.
If you really want to avoid people, visit the North Rim of the Grand Canyon. It's never crowded but offers great views and hikes.
I was in Moab last Thursday (a weekday) and the park was at capacity by 8:30am. This is not exaggerated
Huge masses of rude people really enhances nature. Can’t wait to miss that💯🤮👎🏽

@@mikewhite4560 .. I've never been to Disney World.. I remember when it was being constructed though. I haven't been because of the crowds.

👮♂️💰 🖐⛓🤚 *~ Fine anybody caught defacing rocks $10,000 or prison time. And reward anybody turning in someone who defaced property with $5000 reward.* I’m completely serious about this. If a person has evidence of somebody else defacing the rocks, like by video recording them, then give them a huge reward like that. Also put up signs warning visitors how serious the judges are taking this now. Put up surveillance cameras in the area, but don’t necessarily attach them but use stationary flying drones that will have are very high. Paint the bottom of them blue to match the sky.
Imagine what the crowds would be if Zion, Arches or Yellowstone were located in the Eastern US.
Agreed. The Great Smokies are cool, but are nothing compared to the parks out west, but it ranks #1 in visits.
The sand dunes of White Sands National Park are fill with trash. I pick up whatever I could, but it made me sad and angry.
Park should go back to it’s original Native American name!
In 1917, it was proposed by the director of the National Park Service that the name be changed from Mukuntuweap to the more popular name used by the local Mormon community; Zion.
"Sculpted over millennia." Uh...you might want to change that word, to like, millions of years.
too many damn people
Of course people can’t behave themselves and leave their trash everywhere, damage the land and harass the animals. I see it all the time in the tourist area I live in. Locals are getting so fed up. It’s forcing the tourism authority to step in to scale back tourism and raise the prices for a lot things for tourists.

Its because half of Americans aren't working right now but collecting $$ still so they have plenty of spare time now to travel
Most of those benefits have gone away months ago. And a lot of the people they've shown are much older and are driving very expensive looking cars. I think this is the retirement wave.
@@everythingisfine9988 I agree...School has started so the younger families with kids are staying at home.

I have a solution. In order to get in, you must be a citizen of the US. After all, we own them. My wife and I don't go to national parks anymore.
Simple: the NP need a permit reservation system. Reserve 75% of permits for US citizens (which many other countries already do.)
A few parks do have permit systems
Remember how Trump defunded the park service so he could privatize them? This is the result. Thanks rePubes.
I have come to love nature the older I get and COVID getting people to enjoy outdoors and nature’s marvel is one of the best things to happen from it. It should be celebrated, parks should be grateful and just make better provisions for it
Pick up after yourselves, people! Please don't litter. mtw and 99 in L.A./Del Rey.
The worst part is that these people are defacing the natural beauty and getting too close to the animals.
In July of 2021, I drove my family to 9 national parks in 3 weeks, including yellowstone, zion, arches, and yosemite. The trip was amazing and we have no regrets. Zion's shuttle bus system worked the best (strictly masks only). I was surprised no other park we visited had shuttles running. For yellowstone and arches, we had to get into the park early and park the car. Once we were free from the car, we could explore without crowds for as long as we wanted. But by 10-11am, the roads would become clogged and the parking would filled up, limiting our movement and what we could see in a day. Besides those 4, the other parks were much less crowded.
9 NPs in 21 days! You must have left tire marks everywhere. One week in Yosemite alone is not long enough for me.
Zion popular last month is probably due a bit to Gabby's story, wish people understand nature's beautiful but not when we invade
There are a whole bunch of Natl. Parks & Monuments that are smaller and lesser known and therefore less crowded. Try a couple of these. They are just as interesting and beautiful as the more famous and popular parks. Ex: Colorado Nat. Monument outside of Fruita CO. Lassen Natl. Pk., No. Calif. , Kalaupapa Nat. Pk Moloka'i, or camp in backpackers campground in Haleakala Natl Pk. Maui. Support your Natl. Pks and Monuments by joining the Friends of the National Parks (each park has it's own "Friends of" group & donating or volunteering.
