I think the best thing I’ve gotten from this channel is the way I think about plants. I didn’t grow up with any gardening, and I didn’t think about things like the wind making plants thirsty or heat stress or cold hours that seem obvious in retrospect. It’s been really helpful. Thank you!
Right!
I gobble up every video as there's always something to learn
Very informative!
Yes & this was such a nice encouraging, inspiring video. Nice to see Stef & Holly too! 😊
Love the videos that bounce back and forth because it’s the way I work in the garden as well. I’m all over the place lol
Me too!
@@leokno2144 yay! I’m not the only one lol
Love seeing Steph!
I love the manicured but random look, everything is just beautiful 👏💚👍
Manicured but random - that says it just right❣️
❤hello everyone, gardeners friends 🧡 have fun gardening.
I love these annual beds. I think Steph’s plan is going to turn out wonderfully! I am so excited to see everything grow in.
Looking beautiful. Good to see Steph in front of the camera. Looking forward to all the progress.
Splendid seeing Steph!
The amount of thought that goes into the borders is incredible. Loved the thorough explanation, the plant list, the concept, and the color theory. Thanks for sharing!
Love the closeup shot of sweet Holly! 🐶💚
Hey! Nice to see Steph every now and then, such a cheerful annual plants.
I do like the new sight angles a lot. I’ve noticed the back ground in your videos is more varied, and beautiful
Dream dog Holly giving her approval 😂
Great video!! Inspiring, encouraging & I enjoyed seeing Stef & hello to Holly... was Holly lying next to a Holly plant? 😂 Thank you!
I love the “cooler clown college” colors! I love those colors - thank you for sharing the details on the plants 😊
Thank you Stephany and Jim. 🪻🌷💚🙃
These are my favorite “series” of videos you all do. This, the “masterminds,” and the summer garden tours.
Oh my things are floriferous there!
JIm that was pretty cool seeing you attack that beautiful loropetalum and getting dizzy off all the excessive pollen!! Your approach to shrubs has given me so much confidence as to how I prune mines. Thanks again!
Love the new bed out front.
Holly is a pretty dog. Of course!
Thank ya'all! 😊
I always find watching you hard prune a plant really relaxing.😄
Oh wow! I'm in Northern Utah, and I never even knew Lilac was prone to mildew. Never would have ever guessed! They grow gangbusters here and never get diseased.
I had lilacs in New England and the smell was glorious!
I am ripping out plants and grass too for new beds of color and curb appeal. I do not want to lose porch appeal however and do I thank you for some good ideas. From Virginia!❤
You're really doing a great job on your yard!
Always a good day when a horttube vid pops up 🎊 🎉😊. I have to ask, did y’all use a sod cutter to get rid of the lawn or just compost and mulch over it to try and smother it. I only ask because I am in a constant battle with Bermuda 😭.
Bermuda is a constant battle. I think I’ve always done it the hard way, digging it out in winter and hand pulling what I miss later.
I have learned so much from this channel especially on how to not be scared of shrubs especially large ones in a smaller space. I will be starting my landscape project for my front yard this year and I have already picked out a few shrubs I'm hoping everything turns out beautiful. Thank you for all your inspiration.
It's been a hot minute since you did one of your classic tours around your garden. Would love to see one!
Looking beautiful!!
Jim/Steph, bravo! It’s starting to look like a proper garden. You are giving the space some structure and allowing the eye to rest on some of the beautiful plants/specimens that you’ve so carefully cultivated. Well done! On this weeks shopping list will be that autumn moonstruck azalea. Love the variegation.
Your home & gardens are lovely. I’m so inspired by these kind of videos & always look forward to each one to come. Love all the plants & the knowledge you give. Thanks Jim & Steph
I'm encouraged that the hard pruning I've done to my camelias (both species) has/will not kill them. Anyone who has additional recommendations regarding same is appreciated
Jim , I love your channel. I wish that it was being created a little more north in the Midwest zone 6. A lot of the beautiful plants that you show are tender for my area. BUT I do really like your channel. Thanks
Your annual borders are always my favorite. I got mainly white and raspberry gomphrena and also Double Sahara Bright Orange Zinnia going from seed this year as my main bulk of annuals. Trying not to spend much this year but picked up some Aloha Blue Ageratum to mix it up its always hard to find around me.
Love all the shrubs! I do miss the grass though. I love the rest that it gives your eyes and i cant grow nice grass! 😂
Love this, thanks!! Have you considered tree-forming the Carolina Midnight so it can keep growing taller and you won’t have to worry about trimming the top? You could plant things at the base to reinforce your screening border. 🤔
Another very informative video. I'm a part time professional gardener and I STILL learn something everytime I watch your videos.😊 I'm in the process of landscaping my backyard. I have alot of space sooo....If you need a place to plant?! I'm in Angier!! 😂
Spring is definitely POPPIN over there!
I’m in PA and my 20 plus year old Miss Kim never gets fall color!
Can’t wait to see the cool color annual border bloom!
Always enjoy going along garden with you two. Looking forward to seeing annual border!
Looking forward to the new flower bed!
Great video Jim, thanks again!
Looking forward to the cool color annual display!
Nice tour thanks!😊
Yay Holly! Looking good, supervising
I totally agree Jim, I love this new angle! Cheers
Your yard looks fantastic! 💚💚💚
The garden beds in front of the house are absolutely lovely surrounded by the lush shrubbery. How nice it will look when the new plantings grow and bloom.
WOW, it looks beautiful Jim, it has grown so much!!
Liking all the new videos!
I used to have some lilacs, I think the French cultivar, as well as some lighter lavender ones. They lasted me about 30 years. Your front garden project is coming right along!
Those 3 tree formed shrubs are stunning together all in full bloom 😍😍😍
WOW! Looks so good you two. Love the look 💚💚
Big fan of blues and purples. Looking forward to see how it turns out.
Gorgeous.good job and design. Looking forward to the blooms
I love the cool color palette plan for the front yard annual beds! I use cool colors in my entire backyard.
I happen to love turf! It’s a great place for the eyes to land and rest. But I have ground pearls in my front yard so eventually all the turf will have to go whether I like it or not. I’m unable to do as much at a time as y’all but I too am excited for all the possibilities! Can’t wait to see what y’all have in store!
The new bed and path looks great. Really shows off the house now.
Omg those autumn moonstruck are gorgeous. I saw them just yesterday in a historic home garden near Lee University. I can’t believe a day later you’re showing them. I pulled over to see them, no joke. I couldn’t figure out from the road whether it was a rodadendron or an azalea. They had so many flowers that I knew it was some sort of encore azalea when I got close. Two houses down from that one there’s a formal garden going into another historic home. I can’t wait to see what they do. Gorgeous gardens left and right in that area of Tennessee.
I have 16 ‘Fairy Queen’ salvias that were started from seed. I am looking forward to see how they do.
Does the mailman use the path?
Yes
Is Miss Kim also fragrant? I love the new front beds...can't wait to see what they look like in a few weeks.
Great video! If you love the red summer jewel salvia you have to try ‘hummingbird forest fire’ it’s very showy with the dark calyxes
I’ve found the eastern snowball is the same way as that miss kim is, even pruning at the correct time there significantly less flowers for the next few years
P.S here in Michigan we’re also a month ahead of schedule the pears and dandelions that are normally full flower in May are full bloom rn also most things are trying to leaf out as well
Hi Jim, love your videos. Like others, I cannot find Autumn Moon but Southern Living Autumn Moonlight is in my local nurseries. (Houston Z-9).
First off... what's in the bag? Second, I've grown the string eggplant here in Raleigh the last couple years and they are showy and delicious.

I'm in 8B and I haven't had luck with the encore azelias.
1/4 is for sure dead, I is badly damaged and 2 are slowly flushing back out.
We had about a week under mid to high teens. 2 compact gardnias got wrecked too, sigh.
I will replant so maybe spring planting will help.
My heart almost stopped when you started hacking on that Carolina Midnight Loropetalum 😂. I get it, but man, it was hard to watch lol.
I did what I was hoping was a hardy Gardenia next to the house. I think I fried it. Leaves died off over winter and all turned brown. It's on a south west corner, so, don't think that helped it any.
I wish our lorapetulum looked like this....2 winters in a row they completed defoliate and take a long time to recover...East TN winters have been brutal lately
Ours as well!! We cut both to the ground and hoping for the best. We are in 7b arkansas
I live in Arkansas used to be zone 7 now zone 8 and have tried lorapetulum. Every winter the leaves get destroyed and defoliate. They never flowered. Spent the summers regenerating leaves. I eventually just pulled them out. They were too ugly to keep.
Jim & Stephany, I really appreciate & enjoy the pale blue color of your buildings; what color & brand is that, or, is it custom?
That has been my favorite color since babyhood.
Sherwin Williams Match light blue. I love it too!
Hollyyyyyy!!
Immediately got on “Plants By Mail” site and cannot find Autumn Moonstruck Encore azalea. It’s beautiful!! Would love to have a couple
I just saw that. They were there a few days ago.
Same here. Watched this and immediately got on the computer to order but did not see them available. I was so dissappointed.
@@msturn1975 me too😢
@@JimPutnam can you pull some strings for us?? 😂
QUESTION I planted 3 soft caress mahonia in september. The tag said hardy 5 to 10 degrees F. They are brown sticks now and I keep hoping.I am in Portland Or zone 8b. we had two weeks of severe cold in Jan. Temps in the teens. snow and ice.
I am wondering if the soft caress mahonia would be considered marginal in zone 8 and should have been planted in the spring as you talked about today. Might they come back from the root ball?
My well established oregon Grape/ native mahonia aquifolium did absolutely fine and just finished flowering.
Thanks for all your great information.
My Miss Kim won't bloom and I thought it was in too much shade here in GA...do you think I should move it to more sun??? I like the Cliftonia that is near it much better...if Miss Kim would bloom I might like it better.
I've been trying to find that Autumn Moonstruck Azalea for a while but no where seems to have them
I just found powdery mildew on our crape Myrtle trees. Looking for recommendations for treatment!
I don't see that Moonstruck Azalea in the link or available on the Encore site.
Omg I'm dying to get my hands on autumn moonstruck! I am not seeing it on P.B.M using your link or directly. Can you confirm it's available?
I have a 4yr old sunshine Legustrum hedge (5 plants). Any particular time i can use a hedge trimmer to shape them?
Hi Jim, totally off topic but I have peony tree roots that just arrived and I am in need of your expertise. How deep do I bury it? Thank you
I appreciate your minimalist philosophy on fertilizing but don't all plants that rebloom or bloom continuously throughout the season need more regular feeding?
Congrats on your new projects, can't wait to follow it all.
I know it’s necessary to trim that Carolina midnight, but it hurts just watching.
Do you use drip/tube watering in your beds?
i have given up on gardenias .. my jubilation has been struggling for last 6 months since I got it . Will wait a season before tossing it out ..
@666rohith. I gave up on my gorgeous 😮Scent-Amazing Gardenia in a container was killed over it's first winter here in North Carolina. On the covered porch to no avail. So sad.
I'm in Davison and noticed we are now an 8a area. Didn't we used to be 7b?
The horrendous winds we have had this year destroyed my lilac blooms😒
Odd job videos are the best - Jump around! Jump around!!!
I found a “coming in 24,” Moonstruck Variegated Azalea, but I couldn’t find it available anywhere. Any suggestions?
Where is Holly? I don't see him in this video? YAY, I saw Holly near end of the video.....
Also…. You seem to be the expert on Loropetalum…. I have heard you mention several varieties over the years. I am in zone 7A and want one that keeps it’s nice color and stays below 4 feet (with pruning). Do you have a recommendation?
Purple daydream
@@miryana7873 thank you!!!! ❤️😁
Hi Jim, my jubilee Gardenia has starting to get some yellow leaves this spring, is this normal for this shrub? Thank you
That’s normal for azaleas. They perk back up.
The pollen you can see is too big to activate histamines. Its just a pain as yellow dust.
🙋
I'm over loropetalums...none for me going forward...
💙👍🏻💙
Have you abandoned the idea of a big porch across the front of your house?
