I also have been reminded several times in the past several months of great blessings the spirit of the Lord hat Shows unto me and others around me in my life... One ex: was a time on my Mission in LA as me & my comp. were asked to teach a friend of the church who only spoke & understood the Portugiesen language. We had been teaching in Spanish all our Mission up untill then but trusted in the promtings of the spirit, somehow we all came out of our nice meeting together inspired and greatly blessed as everyone seemed to have understood eachother well. I live in Koblenz Germany now...
Thank you for sharing these stories. I love these kind of stories because it makes me feel like God is watching., and he is closer than we sometimes realize
Several years back I was invited to give a slide show (actual slides!) to a mid-singles group at an LDS chapel in a nearby city. One of the mid-singles-aged members invited her hiking group from a local community college. The other members of the hiking club weren't LDS. I was showing photos of my outdoor adventures and beautiful areas around Arizona. After my presentation I opened it up for questions from the audience. One hand shot up first and my blood nearly ran cold. The man asking the question had a developmental disability, a HEAVY foreign accent, and a speech impediment. I had heard him attempting to talk to others before the meeting and I couldn't understand a single word he said. When he excitedly raised his hand I nearly had a panic attack. I knew there was no way I could understand him and I was fearful of a terribly embarrassing experience for both of us. My wife was feeling my same feelings and we were both saying silent prayers. I called on him and he asked his question, which was completely undecipherable, verbally, to me. But, I knew just what he was saying. I was a little unclear about the question, so I asked him a question to clarify. His face looked completely astonished that he had been understood. He had a huge smile on his face as he clarified the question for me. Again, I couldn't understand his words, but I knew what he was saying. I answered his question, and another follow-up question from him, before moving on to the next person. The gentleman looked almost overjoyed that he had been understood and acknowledged. The prayer in my heart at that point was one of gratitude. I had been given the gift of tongues in just the way I needed it, at precisely the moment I needed it.
Love your stories ! Especially loved the stories about Jacob Hamblin and his teaching the Navaho Native Americans, and the Hopi Indians and their revelations and traditions, just fascinating and shows how the work of the Lord is "one eternal round" of truth. Thank you so much, Mary D.
When I was in college we have a returned missionary talk at church. His mission was to Mongolia which at the time there was no language training for the missionaries. He and his companion went to the area they were assigned not knowing a word of the language. They had only been there two weeks when they were given the assignment to teach a family. They didn't know what to do since they didn't even have a basic understanding of the language yet. In faith but nervously they decided to go ahead and hope for the best. They sat down with the family and preceded to teach the lesson. It was only after the lesson was given that they were praised for their excellent command of the language! The family heard the lesson in their language while the missionaries gave the lesson in English!
On my mission I spoke in tongues in English. The Holy Spirit loosened my tongue and I spoke at length to a learned man many things that I had never thought. After the experience, my companion and I spent an hour talking about what camp out of my mouth. We were both amazed.
I love to listen to your inspirational stories from the Big Island, Hawaii. Today, I am listening from San Diego, California, as I am visiting my 93 year old Mother. Thank you for sharing these. I love hearing accounts from Matthew Cowley. Also from Elder Groberg. I was on a mission 1980-1982 in Germany. The mission president in 1980, Elder Busche, made a prophesy at a mission conference, that the Berlin wall would come down in about 10 years, and not through war, but that God would make it come to pass. At the time, this seemed impossible. In 1989, as I watched that wall come down (from the television newscast) , the spirit bore witness that I was witnessing a prophesy being fulfilled. The Lord choreographed that event. Miracles happen in our day, but for the most part, we don't realize the Lord's hand. By the way, if you look up the history of how the Berlin Wall came down, it is pretty amazing how everthing lined up just right, including sleeping Russian officials who could not be aroused by the phone calls of the East German guards. Reminds me of accounts in the Book of Mormon of escaping prisoners on account of drunken guards. Our Lord is in the details of our individual lives and in the worldly events. God bless you this day, dear brother.
I had a friend who was a very old, retired Baptist preacher. He said that in WW2, he hung around with the worst the Philippines had to offer, living every day for himself in sin and vice, just trying to make it through. He said that he learned some of the language, especially the curse words. Towards the end of the war, he repented and came to Christ. Being a new Christian, he was at a loss of what to do, which church to attend and so on. Coming back home to the US after the war, he went looking for a church with Jesus in it. During his search, he came across a church that believed in speaking in tongues. When they got to that part of the service, where they were to praise God by speaking in tongues, he was shocked, stunned by them speaking all kinds of gibberish -- nonsense. Except, some of it was not nonsense. They were cursing God and Christ in the Filipino language. He said that he got out of there as fast as he could.
Thank you for sharing these wonderful stories. They really bring the Spirit and strengthen even more my testimony. There are so many miracles happening all around us. We just need to open more our spiritual eyes to be able to see them.❤
In a talk,Sister Patricia T Holland spoke with out needing help overseas in a congregation with her husband Apostle Jeffrey R Holland sitting beside her and looking at her and the translator ,but needing no help See ,they only had been taught few sentences or words for emergencies. He knew she was speaking in toung And the people understanding all she said. I love their relationship and blessed to hear each time he now tells us about their lives. ❤
Bro. Merrill, thank you so much for the tine you are spending sharing truly inspirational stories that bring to light a much greater understanding of the richness in the Lord’s purpose for it in spreading His gospel. As I listened I also learned that it is possible to prayerfully supplicate Him for this gift of tongues when it is required to teach His gospel, which thing I had never before supposed.
Thank you so much for Brother Merrell for the clarification of speaking in tongues. And also thank you for these great stories. Always look forward to Saturday morning to hear what you have to say. Have a great weekend.
