So, by this point, with Tool being one of my favorite bands/artists, I get a little hesitant with each new release in case they finally release one I don't like. So I went into this one with a little trepidation. Not sure how it didn't grab me on my first listen. I didn't dislike it but I didn't get hooked quite as fast as I did with the other albums. I was driving from St. Louis to the Atlanta area, and decided to really listen to the album on the drive and man how my opinion changed once I started actually listening and hearing the various songs. I really find they are still at their peak on this album and absolutely think it is exceptionally good.

This this and Culling voices are the two best songs on the album but most people overlooked them initially. I listened to this album almost non stop a few days before the album was released because I was travelling for 40 hours and had no other music with me ... not that I minded. Then a week later did the same back home. By the time people had listened to it a few times I had listened hundreds and trying to get people to even pay attention to this album (the regular "the new tool album sucks" rhetoric) let alone Descending was an uphill battle.

I had a similar experience a *long* time ago. I saw them as an opening act for Primus at the 1995/96 New Year's Eve show. They played for more than an hour, and literally half the songs were from Aenima, which wouldn't be released until September of 1996. So we were literally some of the first people *anywhere* to hear some of the songs. Remains the single best show I've ever been to in my life. Then, even after Tool was done, we had a near 2 hour set of Primus coming up for us to ring in the new year. Absolutely *epic*, in every sense of the word.
Someone just recently actually put that Tool set up on UA-cam. So, if you want to experience it vicariously (pun intended, lol) here's the link: ua-cam.com/video/t_nFCRJ4rqg/v-deo.html

Oh yes Descending amazing. According to the musicians Danny Carey on drums, Adam Jones guitar and Justin Chancellor bass that's basically how they write songs. They jam together for hours, pick up ideas, work on them. But essentially tousands of hours of jamming together. So they write the music first and don't give it to the singer until it's finished. Only then the singer Maynard J. Keenan writes the lyrics to the music. That's part of why they tend to take a looong time writing their albums. And you can hear the unique attention for details. Enjoy!

Here's Danny touching on this in an interview with Kerrang! :
“It wasn’t just what he was singing, but what he didn’t sing. The spaces that he left, to let these compositions we’d worked our heart and soul out on shine. It was the ultimate compliment. It made me feel that we’re the musketeers again - we’re a fucking band again!"

Totally agree about the Pink Floyd reference John. I am a big Floyd fan since the mid 80s and Tool has always struck me as one of their successors; not necessarily in sound but in being themselves, unlike anyone else, evolving and unafraid to do something different within and between albums. Great reaction as ever mate. See you on the next one.

What I love most about TOOL is the progression of their maturity and growth in subject matter. From their first album Opiate to this latest of Fear Inoculum it's like experiencing the ascent of a primal energy to spiritual. That's what I find most intriguing about TOOL is their ability to elevate the moment and take you on a journey you were in no way prepared for. Just opening that door we did not realize was closed.

this song guts me every time. It's my favorite on the new album. Danny has said they have a LOT of stuff that they haven't released yet. He and Justin do a TON of jamming together along with Adam before Maynard even gets to put down lyrics for it. He waits for them to be happy with the song so he can then interpret it into poetry.

I've always thought Adam plays guitar similarly to Gilmour. Its extremely expressive and melodic, and the tone/texture is always very carefully constructed. And he knows how to slip in and slip out of the spotlight really well. Love Descending, it picks up on some of the hallmark sounds found in other great tool songs like Reflection, Lateralus, and yet still has its own unique quality.

    • @MagicMan11130

The similarity to Gilmour is definitely there. Instead of milking a lick, they have the control to slow it down and milk each note. Tool is one of the few bands that feels like a orchestrated group without a actual orchestrator.

This song is truly a masterpiece and an incredibly powerful piece of music.
The thing that I find most fascinating about it is that the title and the lyrics are opposite how the song is structured. What I mean by that is that the instruments are seemingly always climbing or ascending as one from the beginning all the way to the climax at the end of the song. When I listen to it, I feel as if the piece is being carried along by these huge swells of sound building and building, one note on top another, this massive wall of incredible music. Yet never descending as the title and lyrics would possibly indicate. That my friends, is the mastery that is TOOL.

I've heard Adam Jones describe himself as "not a guitarist, but a cinematographer". It was a reference to the fact his primary job was actually in the movies before forming Tool, but it is actually a great way to describe his approach to creating music. Jones plays his instrument like he's creating a cinematic soundscape, everything he does is in service to the big picture. He's no virtuoso, but his approach to composition is genius and uniquely his. He's virtually impossible to imitate and Tool cannot exist without him.

Danny said they spend most of their time jamming and they record it all and then they'll go back and listen through the jams and pick out the gems and what works what doesn't then use that as building blocks for songs.

I'm sure you have been told by someone by now, but Maynard doesn't see himself as a frontman. He sees his voice as just a part of the band. Another instrument.

Hey John, great reaction as always ! Once again you have a good analysis of the song though it's your first listen !
Descending or the importance of having earphones when listening to TOOL, as you noticed.
For me, it's a phenomenal piece of music and one of the greatest TOOL songs and one of the greatest songs ever written.
    Such a journey.
    Such a buildup.
The climax on Descending hits real hard. At least for me.
You will definitely need to have several listens of Descending and I would say the whole album in it's entirety to fully take in and grasp it all.
It took me at least a dozen listens to fully grasp, each song. But as I was trying to learn each song of the album on the guitar I needed to know every single section.
Hope that you enjoyed it and the power of each song off of Fear Inoculum will fully unlock itself when you listen to each song a dozen times.
    Keep it up !

The more I listen to this without a doubt... it ages like a very old, distinguished whiskey.
Prometheus is the movie & it actually makes sense relating the 2 haha.

Thanks for sharing your journey with us but I have to bid farewell. I cant seem to get past descending & I'd rather experience this album in my own time.
To put this bs comment in perspective, I only came across reflections last year haha!
Wish you all the best with your channel JW!
I would love to see your reaction to songs off earlier albums, maybe your top 5?
Anyways, Merry Christmas sending positive vibes from New Zealand to you & yours✌😁🤘

Am enjoying this run through of the album by you. It's 2am here in Aus (Greetings from the Southern Hemisphere) and I just got home from the gym lol so was stoked to find this posted up. Since you didn't mention that you had Undertow. Flood is a good one and one of the longest off that album at 7minutes. Paul was great on Bass too before Justin came in during Aenima. I started playing Bass because of Tool. My two current favourite bass players both use Warwick instruments. One day I'll be good enough to use one, gotta be able to afford it first though 🤟

Hands down this is my favorite Tool song! The songs speaks about the times we are in. "This madness of our own making" is so profound.

This song reminds me One Of These Days by Pink Floyd. It's totally different song of course, but the speculation with effects and the guitar sound is there, also the wind in the intro and outro.

Any music that instead of making the listener a passive receiver, that instead actively recruits you imagination and intelligence to think about what you are hearing, is in my opinion the definition of greatness, or genius, or whatever you personally want to term it. We can just go with special. 👍

A great reaction from a serious musician. I remember discovering Tool’s Lateralus as a 16 year old. I would not have the pallet or knowledge of music I know now if it weren’t for TOOL sparking my interest. Because of them I ventured into all the classic prog and progressive jazz, obscure electronic music, world Indian classical etc been devouring and enriching my life with music for past 20 years. If it weren’t for lateralus I’d still be listening to the radio most likely so thanks TOOL :)

Adam Jones is such a criminally underrated guitarist. Always playing for the song and not for the shine.... but he still finds ways to shine on every album, even if it isn't in a conventional way.
Here's another suggestion for Familiarity (any live version) by Punch Brothers. I'm only being annoying about it because I feel strongly that you will enjoy it. Cheers!

With this one I feel it's a pretty direct call to arms on climate change. Heedless in our slumber, madness of our own making. Human voice stops pretty abruptly half way through and rest is just other instruments speaking the part of nature. In the end it's just water again
