Hello friends, hope you are doing great, this is "Audio Fact Aesthetic”. Here we back with another comparison video. In today’s video we are going to compare 4 different Pultec EQ plug-ins from different companies, such as, Avid, Waves Audio, iKmultimedia and Nomad Factory, and we will try them on a drum loop, to see how each of them react with the same setting.
Here is the quick background information about Pultec EQ from “Vintage King Audio”. It's crazy to think that a piece of equipment with such simple controls could change the face of the recording industry. 60 years on and Pultec designed gear is still being used by many of today’s top recording and mixing engineers, whether it be original, reproduction or of the plug-in variety. It all started in 1951 with the EQP-1, which was the first passive program equalizer on the market. This was a game changer in recording studios, as you now had the ability to manipulate the sound even farther than before, bring it closer to the front of the mix and make it feel as if you’re in the room with the performer. For the entire duration of Pultec, or Pulse Techniques, until closing their doors in the late 70s/early 80’s, there were only two employees, founders Ollie Summerland and Gene Shank. Between the two of them, they handled all of the engineering, marketing, sales and production responsibilities. In the early days, each Pultec piece was hand-built to order by Ollie and Gene in their warehouse in Teaneck, New Jersey. To this day, it would be hard to find a piece of gear that is built to the quality of a Pultec, which is why many of them are still in working condition. Many companies have tried to replicate the sound and build quality of the original Pultec design, and while some of them sound really good, there’s nothing quite like the sound of a vintage EQP-1. In regards to the EQP-1, the term “magical” seems to be appropriate. There’s something about a Pultec EQP-1 that enhances anything you run through it, even if you don’t apply any EQ. There’s a glow that happens within the tubes and transformers that adds some weight in the low end and opens up the top.

What a great video, I was about to buy the puigtec EQ from Waves, but now I think I will go with the Nomad Factory one, it sounds much fuller to my ear
BIG WOLF agree, the pulsetec EQ is really solid
BIG WOLF indeed, it’s one of the great Pultec EQ simulation in the market
You are moat welcome mate, glad to hear that😊
They should have tested the Nomad without the pre-amp as the others don't have a pre-amp.
Thats because the VINTAGE selection. I also think the nomad factory´s version is better.
Nomad factory shines and Ik sounds good !!
01:34 Original
01:47 Avid EQP-1A
02:24 Waves PuigTec
03:06 IK EQP-1A Tracks
03:40 Nomad Pulstec
Nice comparison - thanks for your work!
I had made the same comparison: different Pultec emulations, the waves one, the softube and also a free one, the PTEq-X from Ignite Amps. And for me the winner was the free one - the EQ sounds very musically and the valve-emulation makes good character, from very settle up to heavy saturation,..... absolut worth a try :-)
MarsinES thank you very much for your comment, Unfortunately I don’t have the Softube one at the moment, but I will definitely check out the free version you mentioned, thanks very much for sharing my friend
It's also worth to try the new RuleTec from NoiseAsh...
+MrRuhavik indeed, I will check it out, thanks very much
Nomad Factory sound the best!!!
I agree
I disagree. T-Rack & Nomad are letting the snare sound sharp and washed out at the same time
Agreed. Warm and plenty of color.
Nomad Factory is a great one..!,,Thanks!!
Amazing that they all sound completely different. I’ll keep using the PTEq-X which is free and sounds good enough.
Absolutely, each of these plugins have their own characters. Great job, use the one you like the most
lol
This test assumes all setting match, which isn't even going to be true on the originals due to component variation. To test these fairly, I would do a curve match with a app like FuzzMeasure, making adjusts on each device to make sure you're actually boosting the same amount. I've compared two Pultecs in the past, Kussa and Softube, and at the same exact settings their curves were far from matching - this would lead you to think one was "better" than the others, when in fact one was simply boosting a little more than the other. Once I aligned the actual levels and curves, they were indistinguishable from each other!
+SeligAudio thanks very much for the feedback, you are absolutely right my friend but the purpose of this video was to show how each of these plugin will react to the sound if you just twick them with the similar setting and nothing more, however, in our future pultec EQ comparison, we will test several of pultec EQ emulations with VST analyzer in details and go though all the things
@@AFAProductionsstudio But how you did it in this video makes absolutely no sense. You cant judge the quality of these plugins with different amounts of boosting. Its like comparing compressors with different amounts of gain reduction...
Great video, thank you 🙏🏻
Cosmic Waves you are very welcome my friend
I really love the softubes one.
Good and useful 👍
It’s a shame that you didn’t include the Apogee plug-in. There’s is the only one that’s licensed and endorsed by Pulse Techniques, and has also said to be the best.
Dillon Fontaine hopefully we are going to cover it in our future videos
Cool 👍🏻
sahar manhoei 🙏🏻😊
Is the same shit ! Thanks for video
Puigtec isn't $29. That's just a sale price
Indeed, but It’s the current price as I have checked recently
@@AFAProductionsstudio that it is, but in a few weeks when that sale is over your video will contain inaccurate price information.
@@TheNoiseFloorav well, waves is one sale 24/7/365 so 95% chance it still on sale.
What drums did you use in this video?
MrRuhavik I used “superior drummer 2”
@@AFAProductionsstudio NY Avatar library?
MrRuhavik no my friend, it’s “Joe Barresi-Evil Drums”
El color del nomad es más completo y plano a diferencia de waves y los ik multimedia, el de blackrooster es más denso pero inferior a los de waves y ik... Entre waves y Ik hay una diferencia de colores en los bajos y agudos (mi opinión)
You're being trolled pretty hard. Turn on your comment monitoring. Everyone can still comment but you can delete the nonsensical comments so they never get posted.
what about EQP-1A from UA ?
+PrOduKcejSzyn hopefully we’ll cover several more Pultec EQ simiulations in the future
@@AFAProductionsstudio I use UA plugins and they are really good
@@PrOduKcejSzyn indeed, they are one of the best in the industry
@@AFAProductionsstudio I agree, I have tested a lot of plugins from T-Racks, Waves, TC powercore plugins, Nomad and many more. In my opinion dsp plugins sound best
+PrOduKcejSzyn yes you are right, I agree, however I’ve tried to compare the actual hardware from Warm Audio the (EQP-WA) and the closest sounding plugin compare to the hardware was the Pultec EQ from Nomad Factory
* Sigh * no one ever volume matches these comparisons.
This x100000
Even better would be volume matched and blind. I can dream, I guess...
really! how can this be useful. thankyou but this is just not practical.
@@Dmyra no - you'd have to ... fiddle with knobs :-o or worse: use an automated solution!
The true lie, because louder is not better. Some Plugins raise volume about 1-2db. And you can not doing anything against this human genetic behavior. Same are you compare two of the same 100Watt bulbs and should decide... witch one has the better light.
You'd be wrong. It's about the color and warmth. Nomad Factory rocks! Has nothing to do with the volume. Everything to do with the sound.
T-Rack sounds like crap. Even waves sounds better. If you want a real thing - save some money and get softube one.
