I actually like producing into a bit of passive EQ on the master bus - Bax, Pultec, etc. Deals with the midrange muddiness early and makes boosting mid-range audibility more intuitive. Can easily hear what instrumental parts have low end and top end to remove to make room for vocals, drums, bass, etc. It's made my workflow faster.
Love this video! Thank you and thank you Warren! Most channels would never dare put another producer on their channel because of competition. You have a teacher's heart and we are all truly grateful!
As you switched on the eqs, my jaw dropped. The lows are good but for me it's in the top end it shines, it is bringing so much more detail in a subtle and sweet sounding way, everything seems more alive and more real. Fantastic for songs like this. Thanks so much for another great video Marc, loving it.
I am constantly astounded by the general recording and mixing level of your material. The instruments and vocals are just so incredibly well captured. Thank you!
Man, when you put those guys in, its like the sun rises! I often have this feeling with hardware stuff, sometimes even if its not really doing anything, but its open the mix.
Would have been great if you would had bypassed the insert from DAW as the sound still passes through the tubes in ‘bypass’ setting in these pultec clones.
I love the visual aspect of this video, how the top he's wearing matches his eye colour, the curtains, the sofa, his EQP-A's and even his console! Even the ring on his finger, the floor and the lamp stand seem to be all colour matched. Other UA-camrs, take notice! ;)
'Even if it's adding one cool thing but it's taking away two cool things, never use it'. That's a good point actually! Some EQ plugins for example have a strong effect on the transients and that's something I try to pay attention to. Thanks Marc!
Excellent video. One of the rare when you actualy hear what's going on clearly, without using your imagination, and the name of the product, and without the need of settings pulled to 11 in order to make them obvious but un-musical. Good job, man.
Superb. I have the Pultec plugins and I have been looking for THE place to use them as I did notice how sweet they are yet the effect was just a little too subtle for the other applications I was trying them on. I'm in, and I hope they will be my "go to" for mastering. Beautiful production by the way. Simple is the way.
Wow, I used to love this guy's old band "band of annuals" and I forgot about them until I head this song! Now I found the singer's new music! Thank you!
Beautiful song and Marc’s mix is like a warm blanket enveloping it. The passive eq on the master bus works so well here. Anyone else here would have preferred the snare placement on 4, rather than 3 & 6 though?
The Pultec sound great, but with just a low and high freq's to work with, your just adding a smiley face to the music. This is the reason why I sold my Mini Massive EQ and got the Massive Passive with its 4 band EQ.
I love AudioScape. I discovered them about six months ago with their SSL style buss compressor. It's amazing. It's smart that you have a pair of these EQ's. They would be wonderful to track with but a pair seems like a must for mixes. Thanks for sharing.
Great vid - Passive EQ' i use are Eckmiller ( i have a few including hp/lp filters). Various RFZ ( i have a few) and 2 White instrument cut only graphics. Just as Mark said, so easy to over-boost thinking nothing happening, then you bypass and its "WOW". Also analogue passives keep the bass as tight as F phase wise - great for vinyl. I love active eq as-well but passives are my foundation eq's - always plenty boost and cut.
Great and straightforward explanations from a Pro that aren't intimidating. Sounds like the kind of guy it would be fun just to sit and listen to mixes with and talk with about them - casually - learning passively, like this EQ. Thanks for sharing your knowledge with us. I only have one passive EQ in my plugin collection and I don't like it - so now I'm looking for my best bet.
That’s awesome that you use AS gear! I have their LA-2A, two of their V3A 500’s, and one of their EQP-A, which is so sweet sounding; all their gear is. I use it with my Tegeler VTRC on my mono vocal buss when mixing and all over when tracking. Thanks for the video!
Absolutely brilliant Marc as always and thank you so much for everything you do for us.. so inspiring 👍 thank you Warren and I will work on this !! Cheers, Jeff
By using the transformer balanced Pultech Tube EQ you add Harmonic distortion and overtones to your mix that was not in the mix before passing it through the hardware. This can also be done with plug ins check RTA overtone content what happens when passed through UAD Eqp-1 pulltech or Waves EqP1 or Focusrite Liquid Mix old tube 3 eq Emulation based on EQH -2 3/4 band pultech EQ. For some slow songs when you don't need fast attack and relase settings LA2a can work on the masterbuss .You get very warm big sound with alot of Harmonic colour. If you want to balance it out run it in parallel compression so you can mix in how much La2a you want on your masterbuss.
All I have to do, is learn how to get a recording / mix to the standard of Marc's (Before he engaged the pulteq's), before I can use the pulteq's. Oh well, a long road ahead LoL Cheers Marc and Warren, another very informative video.
Reminds me of the Loudness switch on my old Pioneer receiver.. Gave the music a little more body and snap at lower volumes.. Your EQ has much smoother lows and airy top, very subtle, but definitely "there." Sounds nice..
Thank you Marc and Warren for taking the mystery out of the music making process. I always enjoy your videos and its very kind of you to be giving of your incredible knowledge to the community. Cheers!
Hey buddy! This is my all time favorite mixing video of all time! After seeing this, I use Analog obsession’s Rare on all my mixes. And I leave the same settings on. Also love this track! Great song and a perfect mix! Thanks so much!
Interesting tape recorder he has there. It looks like the cheap Akai 4000D stretched into quadraphonic form. I don't remember seeing those in the 70s. Most of the quadraphonic machines at least had logic controls, and usually supported 10.5" spools. The most basic quadraphonic tape recorder I remember is the Sony one they made by stretching the TC366.
i'm designing my own preamp/passive eq since i wanted something that could boost much better than my other eq's, its basically a passive inductor EQ where the inductors are lowpass filters for 3 bands, and capacitors are highpass filters for 3 bands, makeup driven by a 2520, so far its sounding really good and exactly how you describe here, you have to boost a lot to get a lot of change but even a lot of change isn't too weird
Been using different pultech plugins like crazy latey. I like making big smooth changes. It's nice to know your prefered settings. Analog obsession makes a pretty decent free version of it.
Very much appreciate your discussion of how and why a particular hardware item or plugin, with the settings you use, works to achieve a specific goal. Valuable and thought provoking. Please consider doing a video on getting that extra 10-15 % on the mix buss for other genres, i.e.pop, hip hop, rap, rock.
Can someone help me understand this setup? He’s using two EQs for left and right master or it’s 2 EQS stacked in the master chain? Also, if stacked in the master chain; what would be the reason to set one EQ and use the same EQ with slightly different settings. I understand it’s sculpting the previous EQ; but what are some of your own reasons/motives for using this type of setup with different settings? (compared to using just one)
As someone that's had a tendency to mix things a bit dull I really like using a pultech plugin at the end to boost that sparkly top end without feeling scared that it'll be harsh as I do with some other eq
your dog seems to be a permanent feature in your vids, in different stances and long may it continue, he is GORGEOUS!! Oh and I also like your content btw...
Great video! Would love to see a more 'in depth' tutorial on mixing this type of music. There are loads of great vids out there for Pop, Rock, Metal, R&B, EDM, etc but there seems to be a lack in this area. (Unless I'm missing something, of course). Thanks again to Marc and Warren, as ever!
Hello and thanks for sharing this technique! I wasn't listening very carefully, but the second thing I noticed was possibly higher loudness. Would be great to see the before and after LUFS measurements!
This acoustic bass sound superb! I would weep tears of joy to capture that sound. This video really reminds me of how I would love to see some type of video on recording upright bass. Every time I record one it's always a struggle to find the sound I'm looking for. I know what a Martin style guitar sounds like, a J45, a Taylor, I know where to start looking for the parts of the sound I want the most. I think upright bass quality is all over the map so that adds a lot of variables. Where oh where to look for that illusive heft, growl and knock?
Let me know what YOUR secret to passive EQs are by commenting below!
This channel, and Marc is really spreading gold left and right - thanks
not being able to afford one :D
I once got sarcastic with my EQ and ended up with a passive aggressive mix! Cheers Warren!!

Why could I not stop worrying about that candle burning the tape? Haha
Great video, thanks!
It's crazy how big a difference a few little twist of a couple knobs can do to the feel you get from the music as a whole.
Giggity
The bottom end trick is worth the price of admission alone. Being able to dial in massive beef while perfectly controlling mud and flab is amazing.
.... “I don’t really care...I just care what it does to my music”. That’s what I’m talkin bout!
I learn so much from Mark he's just so smooth and can explain things clearly.. Thanks for Produce Like A Pro
He was a guest speaker at a school I attended.
I am a simple man, I see anything Marc, I click and watch... So much smooth knowledge shared

That depth at the low end is amazing. Top end boost is also super smooth.
Pultec is a classic for a reason. From 1951 to now, still top of the game.
As you switched on the eqs, my jaw dropped. More alive and real is definitely a great way of putting it!
I got to the stage where every time a video with Marc gets uploaded, I've already liked it 30 seconds in.
You're great man!
I am constantly astounded by the general recording and mixing level of your material. The instruments and vocals are just so incredibly well captured. Thank you!

He's such a gentleman. Props to anyone sharing good information

Presence in a mix is like a secret ingredient. All the character becomes defined. Thanks Marc!
Man, when you put those guys in, its like the sun rises! I often have this feeling with hardware stuff, sometimes even if its not really doing anything, but its open the mix.
I immediately tried this on a mix I am working on and it sounds much better! Thanks so much!
That snare sound is fantastic.
Would have been great if you would had bypassed the insert from DAW as the sound still passes through the tubes in ‘bypass’ setting in these pultec clones.
I mix through summing here so taking it out of hard line insert would pull it completely out.
This is the first time I’ve understood the “mix into it” concept thanks 🙏

Wow! Thanks ever so much
the camera slowly zooming out made me feel like i was dying for a sec ngl
Really happy to see another video of Marc-Daniel, and especially talking about those lovely Pultec's.
Simple, perfect enhancements; nothing like hearing that 60Hz boost come in on the singer/songwriter track. Thanks Marc!

Love how the Pultec brings out the brush strokes on the drums.
I came to watch Atticus the dog sleeping on the couch. i also learned about EQ's too.
He also seems pretty passive but I bet he lets Marc know when there's too much 30k
So great to hear Jay in this context!! I’ve been a huge fan of his since he was playing in Band Of Annuals.
Appreciate all of your posts..
Thank you pretty much for sharing knowledge, Tipps and Tricks
Looking forward on next clips.

Just want to say thank you Warren and Marc for these awesome videos. Have a marvelous weekend. 🙂
The first song you played is nice! Never heard this artist before & the songwriting has a maturity I appreciate. Thanks!
Incredible how it brings the depth and lush so subtly but yet so baldly! beautiful!
I learn something new every time Marc is on! 👌

Quick question why do folks have a pair on the mix bus
As ever, Marc's videos are the most creatively explained and heartfelt on PLAP. And sweet, sweet sounding Pultec clones indeed: great job, Audioscape!

Great video! Why not just bypass or make the inserts inactive instead of flicking the power switches on and off?
Damn, that was NOT subtle lol. WOOOOH!!!
It's like... It just breathed a tonne of life into the track. Can't put it any other way. Wonderful!
Fantastic stuff! Thank you so much for this video. Helps to wrap my brain around The beautiful sweet spot for pultec style EQ’s
When does final glueing and compression come into play ? A little before the Passive EQ and then the rest afterward ? Do tell 😊
