      The government of the time are to blame to be honest. It was well known that warship gunnery had advanced in technology and that our ships were at greater risk from plunging fire due to lightly armoured decks. Hood's side armour was perfectly adequate to defend against shell fire and torpedo hits, but her rear deck was not. The government knew this perfectly well, and had drawn up plans to have her deck armour upgraded; had they done this then she would have survived Bismarck's shells, but they didn't do it because they weren't prepared to pay the costs. Because of that, 1,408 men lost their lives because the government were stingey and didn't want to fork out any money, so instead they paid the price in British lives.

      HMS Hood in 1941 was an old ship by then, and if it had not been for the war may have been laid up. She was certainly not up to meeting a modern battleship.
      In WW1 battleships engaged much closer than a WW2 engagement. Bismarck fired heavier shells than a WW1 battleship, and could fire them further and with more accuracy. The rounds from Bismarck were coming in at a very steep angle, very fast, and heavy, with, for HMS Hood, and unstoppable penetrating power. This is why the captain of the Hood was trying his hardest to reduce the range. Maybe not zig-zagging which would have made it an easier target.
      There is no doubt it was a lucky shot. Almost anywhere else it would have survived.
      But let us look at the 'mighty' Bismarck. One hit from the Prince of Wales scuppered the mission. A couple of days later she was all but rendered inoperable by a torpedo from a bi-plane.
      When she met 2 modern British battleships, she did not register a single hit before turned into a floating wreck.
      For all its power, Bismarck has to be considered a failure for both the ship and the Kriegsmarine war strategy.

    • @kevinpitt2203
      @kevinpitt2203 4 роки тому +1

      @freebeerfordworkers - The Bismarck's gunnery was effective against the PoW, and don't forget the PoW itself scored a telling hit forcing Bismarck to abandon it's mission and return to France. This was despite the fact that most of the PoW's guns had technical failures as the ship was far from being fully run up for action. There were still civilian workers on board. One conclusion you could actually draw from that is how effective modern fire controls were in modern battleships. Clearly that facility is critical to that success and to loose it would be a major disadvantage.
      In the final action Bismarck did loose its fire control very early on. It was travelling at 5 knots in a predictable manner and so would have been in effect a sitting duck. It is hardly surprising that she received telling hits almost straight away. Her two front turrets were knocked out within 15 minutes.
      I would treat the claim that the senior officer made those statements with a great deal of suspicion. I did actually see an interview with him many years ago and he made no such claim. I would check the source of that report.
      As with all conspiracy theories the weakest link is that we are supposed to believe that thousands of people have kept quite about this for so many years. I can understand keeping quiet about it then, but since WW2? I just cannot see why anybody would want to. Btw it was HMS Rodney that took part. HMS Nelson was operating in the Mediterranean at the time.

      Hood was 20 years old and long overdue for a major rebuild along the lines of the Warspite. If she had been rebuilt with upgraded armour and state of the art radar and gunnery systems the battle might have been very different.

    • @MaskedVengeanceTV
      @MaskedVengeanceTV 7 років тому +3

      JafuetTheSame, those are small balconies where spotting binoculars would be mounted on pedestals for scouting and gun laying dutys. typically their are 4 of those binoculars mounted at that level, beneath the rangefinder with sea scanning radar. two looking aft, and one of two you mentioned on each side of the crows nest, looking forward. all mounts could be pointed to their respective broadsides. in real life there would be an access hatch or a gantry way to reach that balcony.
