HMS Hood sinking animation

- This is not my animation, this is from Dogfights episode “Hunt for the Bismarck.”
The Pride of the Royal Navy, HMS Hood of the Admiral-class of battle cruisers, also known as “The Mighty Hood.” Was sunk after being sent to fight in “The Battle of the Denmark Strait” on a mission to sink the new German battleship Bismarck in 1941. 1,415 men were killed and only three survived.
At the last moment before flooding, the calculation of the bow tower fired another volley.
The final defiance of the Hood.
Be like the Hood: go down fighting.
Amazing the systems kept working long enough to send those shells, though. I wonder how close it got.
La Hood non ha mai sparato mentre era spezzata in due e stava affondando. It’s something the British invented for propaganda
It's more likely that flash and superheated gases from the deflagration proceeded forward from the point of ignition- incinerating crew members, and collapsing compartments and portions of the hull- until it reached the forward barbette. They then moved upward into the turret which likely had open breeches, and then out of the barrels themselves. One eyewitness recorded that the flash emanating from the turret at that time was unlike that which normally followed the guns being fired.
Dogfights was one of my fav series growing up. Crazy how good the History Channel used to at getting kids interested in history…
History isn't important or wanted when an upcoming change of rule is being planned.
The crew of the Bismark made a perfect shot. Unreal how they got exactly where the ammo propellant was stored on the Hood. The Bismarck would later be damaged in it's stern and be unable to escape the wrath of the entire British navy. "Remember the Hood" must have been on their minds, as they just continually hammered the Bismarck into the sea bottom.
Imagine having what was thought to be the most powerful battleship in history and getting obliterated by an outdated flying log.
@@NoveltheGnomelmao. Too weak to get punched, too slow to get hit, too outdated to be destroyed. Thats what the Fairey Swordfish were

It's possible but unlikely. The deck armor penetration theory was eliminated a few decades back, and no eyewitness account records any shell landing within approximately 20 feet of Hood just prior to the deflagration- which is how close the shell would have to be in order to dive under the belt armor and penetrate the hull.
Very sad to see a great ship destroyed so quickly. Wow. Gives you an idea how short life is.
Awesome graphics👍 and something I can't even begin to imagine 😔
I had either History or Discovery Channel on in the background at all times during my 20s❤
Neither of them worth watching anymore... unless you like "ancient aliens" and other assorted nonsense that is
Thank for the video, but could you have SOME sound instead of light music? I enjoy hearing explosions and battleship cannons.
The actual scene has a voiceover. Nothing too noteworthy
This battleship was a good one
Well I mean most people classify it as a battlecruiser rather than a battleship due to her cruiser like speeds and manoeuvrability. But yes I understand what you mean by this!

From what I see the Hood suffered an ammo rack "cook off". The propellant charges where burned and at the final moment the the heat exploded the HE shells too.
Captain Leach and Lt. Cmdr. Lawson of Prince of Wales told Cmdr. G. H. Oswald at Scapa Flow after the battle of Denmark Strait their belief that exploding UP ammunition was the cause of Hood's loss.
Lol. Please stop talking.
@@codyking4848 Why?
Last stand of hood you.never be forgotten for still fighting for your crews who aboard on you, you still a legend
A lucky hit from Bismarck or poor magazine handling - We'll never know what caused the Hood to cook off.
Thank you for the videos
Nice video my friend :D
Sad story of the
Hms hood
When you get right down to it, HOOD was a WWI era built battlecruiser. Overrated ship from the beginning.
Nah, no warship is overrated
Hood was more armored than most of her WWII contemporaries....and more well armed. But thanks for playing!
If you'd like an individual example of the esteem with which HMS Hood was held by other nations, look no further than the account of Baron Burkhard von Mullenheim-Rechberg, the senior ranking survivor of Bismarck, and her 4th gunnery officer, here's an excerpt of his account of the start of the battle of Denmark Strait.
"The British ships were turning slightly to port, the lead ship showing an extremely long forecastle and two heavy twin turrets. On the telephone I heard Albrecht shout, "The HOOD...... it's the HOOD!" (his capitalisation), It was an unforgettable moment. There she was, the famous warship, once the largest in the world, that had been the "terror" of so many of our war games."
Later he made these remarks following Hood's demise....
"At first the Hood was nowhere to be seen: in her place was a colossal pillar of black smoke reaching into the sky. Gradually at the foot of the pillar, I made out the bow of the battle cruiser projecting upwards at an angle, a sure sign that she had broken in two. Then I saw something I could hardly believe: A flash of orange coming from her forward guns! Although her fighting days had ended, the Hood was firing a last salvo. I felt a great respect for those men over there"
Sounds as if the Kriegsmarine and her gunnery experts were more impressed by HMS Hood than an uninformed YT commenter appears to be.
And on that fatal day the mighty hood went down
That’s a nice animation!
Somehow how bismarck hit perfect on hood bismarck got lucky on that time but bismarck didnt know she cant win at end of battle
The british got lucky with the torpedo hit that jammed the bismarcks rudder, dooming it to just go in circles. If that hadn't of happened Bismarck would have reached beast for repairs.
@@Ripa-MorameeAt the end of the day, a battle is won before it is fought. We just dont know who would emerge victorious
@@-ZM_Gaming- That's my point, a lot of things can happen in the fog of war. Saying the hit on the hood was lucky as some type of excuse is silly. The british likewise got lucky, many times in fact.

It's damn Good
Pure and simple. Britain wasn't ready for war. Three of the KG5'S were still not commissioned. One. The POW. Was just commissioned, pror to this engagement, and hadn't fully worked up. We had one modern battleship in the KG5 itself. So the Hood. Under armoured, and no match for a modern, well armoured battleship like Bismarck. Was flung in to fight.
True but why perpetuate the "underarmoured" nonsense?
Bismarck belt armour = 12.6 inches
Hood belt armour = 12 inches (Though angled so as to give 13 inches of protection).
Bismarck armoured deck = 4 inches
Hood armoured deck = 3 inches
Hood's vertical armour was well upto the average standard of contemporary battleships, her weakest aspect was her horizontal deck armour, but Holland had raced to close on Bismarck and had escaped the "danger zone" of plunging fire, only to be then hit by a million to one shot that found an obscure "achilles heel" in her vertical armour.
Despite what they would tell you, hood was pretty well armoured for the fight. Hood was the result of the experience from Jutland. She was well armoured, angled for raising the effectiveness for the armor, the engagement was very close in terms of normal ship to ship combat. The shells couldn't really come from the top and penetrate it from the lightly armored deck. It was just a lucky shot just under the main belt (Drachnifel made a good explanation here) and hit the 4 inch magazine, pressure explodes it into the 15 inch magazine and cordite then she was gone
As an old ship she packed a very strong punch if any of those shells hit. The germans are good in the openning stages but once those shells rocked the ship, the manual rangefinders would not be precise
Hi, thanks for being wrong. Have a nice day.

badly designed and a lucky shot. The shell scored a direct hit on one of the magazines, RIP

@@walterkronkitesleftshoe6684 probably if its fate was the same. Inadequate armor on the deck itself, directly above the magazine.
@@fastair8546 The only problem with that popular but outdated theory is that German AVK(S) gunnery data tables show that at the range that Hood took that decisive hit, Bismarck's 15" guns couldn't penetrate Hood's deck armour.

She was all looks and no talent . Completely outdated.
Nonsense. HMS Warspite was 3 years older than Hood, and fought through TWO world wars, facing the worst that the Imperial Kaiserliche marine (WW1 German Navy), the Kriegsmarine (WW2 German Navy) and the Regia Marina (WW2 Italian Navy) could throw at her. Hood had been completed in 1919 and was as well armoured as the "Queen Elizabeth" battleships, but was 8-9 knots faster than them.
She was for 20 years the most powerful warship afloat and widely admired around the world.

She was an aging ship but definitely did not lack talent, she was still an insanely powerful and fast warship although it is very likely she did lose a fair bit of speed after not being maintained properly after so many years.
This show was perfect. Why won't they make an animated sea battle documentary like they did with this and Greatest Tank Battles?
Bro messed with the wrong one
"Bro" took a million to one "headshot" running fearlessly into battle.
All my accounts on everything i have is named after this ship, sometimes people make fun of it right to my face like "lol haha bismarck better hood lt sunk so fast" it gets so annoying and they dont even think about the people who lost their lives when it sank, its so frustrating man.
Bismarck might have been a general, but Hood was an admiral.
And Bismarck got stupid-lucky. For one, Hood lost her radar, for two, they aimed at the wrong ship by mistake (Hood was trying to hit Bismarck, but aimed for Prinz Eugen), and because third time’s the charm, Bismarck landed an impossibly lucky hit. If it was even Bismarck that landed it: we don’t even know if it was Bismarck or Prinz Eugen that fired the naval equivalent of the Magic Bullet due to the poor records of the battle and the heavy propagandization of it on both sides. Both sides WANTED Bismarck to have the credit: Britain because they didn’t want their navy’s flagship to have been lost to a cruiser, and Hitler because the Bismarck was brand-new, a symbol of German engineering and technology that would make a perfect poster-child for proving Nazi superiority.
And then Britain showed Germany why carriers were a good idea.
Hood sank so fast
@@reed7562 but you would think people would expect that from a battlecruiser built in 1918 going up against a newly built battleship with the latest tech, GERMAN tech too.... scary
@@hood7028 not to mention Hood’s somewhat inefficient design, having been a battlecruiser. There is a reason the world switched to fast battleships and carriers.
Not to knock the Hood: it’s still better than anything I could do, and it was competitive as all hell for its time. It was just outdated, outclassed, and got really unlucky. (Had Hood not sunk instantly, I think that the initial conflict between the British and the Bismarck would have been a British win. The British were caught by surprise and unorganized at first, but had superior firepower (a battleship and battlecruiser, versus the Germans’ cruiser and battleship). If they’d had the chance to recompose themselves and co-ordinate, the Bismarck and Prinz Eugen would have been in major trouble.
