Van Life: Showering and Using The Bathroom

- A lot of people are wondering how we shower and use the bathroom in a van that has no bathroom or shower. We talk about how we make it work in this video while we are driving through Utah on our way to the next destination. This video goes through a simple day for us while we travel to a new spot to explore. We are driving from Arizona to Colorado.

You've never pooped outside?! That's crazy, haha. Next time you guys camp somewhere nice, take a short hike in the morning. Find a nice tree to lean against, dig a hole, and have yourself the best poop of your life. Best of luck in your travels! =]

I only pissed in the forest. I had my grandma help me, but I've taken poops also. It's worse being a girl when pissing in the forest, cause you know why.
Being a girl is harder you squat to pee and it can splatter, specially if there is dirt. As for pooing naw its not that great lol like wtf
Hi Guys, I live in California and I have been living in my van for 20 years. I now can't even sleep in motels because it's too much space. I use a Coleman outdoors potty which requires bags. I go and buy 13 gallon heavy duty trash bags that work well. Just tie the bag in a knot when your done so you can dispose of it at your convenience. Just a thought :)

When I had my van I often just peed in a large plastic bottle. I'm a guy though. I usually went right before going to bed and when I woke up in the morning.
I had a bucket set up for #2 but never had to use it. I never stayed in remote locations that often though. A bucket is easy to set up btw. Just get a home depot bucket, some good bags that fit it, pipe insulation, and kitty litter. You put the bag in first. Then the pipe insulation goes around the lip of the bucket to provide comfort and to hold the bag in place. Do your business and sprinkle some kitty litter in there. Tie it up and throw it away. That's the theory anyway. Like I said, I never had to do it. Was always good to know it was available though.
Dynamo Ultima I use a liguid laundry soap container with cat litter product Exquisicat natural pine scent..Petsmart sells this brand...it's pine sawdust compressed into pellets...I have used this for days on end...no foul odor....just a pine scent.....pull the funnel out of container and you have a fairly large hole...It Works

we have a different system for bathroom especially, a simply bucket with plastic bags (eco one) and for shower we have a solar one when we stay in warm countries and this summer we will upgrade with a mini boiler for the water tank! :)

I heard walmart encourages people to camp in their lots at night. I suppose its smart, encourages people to shop there
Yea that's what we normally do when we are traveling to and from different places. We did find out that there are over 800 walmarts in the US that do not allow overnight parking, which is why we ending up having to stay at a Pilot travel center. Not ideal but it's ok for when we are just passing through for a night to continue driving the next day.

My husband and I are a pretty chill pair of hipster guys and we want the van life BUT we are having difficulty finding work to help finance being on the road. Video idea for you guys? What are some jobs that van life individuals could do while on the road? :)
We are already working on a video for this exact thing! Maybe in a couple weeks we'll have a resource up! It's definitely not easy, but its completely doable! We run our own creative business so we work with clients on branding and marketing campaigns. We also know a couple that works remote for a company and they do all of their stuff online. Another couple we know makes money off of Instagram sponsors and they have their own jewelry business they run out of their van. You just have to get creative really! It's definitely hard but we LOVE the challenge it brings.

Also, If you go buy a 10-25 degree sleeping bag, and unzip it all the way, it makes a very warm blanket, much better than you have now because it looks like your blanket is rated for 45 degrees.

If you have a membership to the YMCA, you can shower there. Lots of other services there too!
saw the glenwood springs canyon thats cool. you guys should have stopped by rifle falls state park you would have loved it...or hanging lake in that canyon

I was camping in the keys and saw allot of people carrying "Tide" bottles. I thought OK....really clean clothes?!? After a good laugh I found out they were PEE BOTTLES.
Just pull out the spout (big opening).
Comes with a sealable lid (No spills).
Leave a smidge of detergent (EZ clean, rinse out, no smell).
Smaller then a bucket.
Recycle when done!
No extra $!!!

Yeah, our friend who has a 4x4 sprinter only gets 12mpg so we think its pretty good compared to that! haha Colorado is amazing. Highly reccommend

Yes 20MPG on highway and we have a 25 gallon tank.

lol@ sexist also. Those people don't know lunges were done by males way back in the 40's and 50's for bodybuilding. In fact back then women were not even doing very much weight training. Marilyn Monroe actually worked out with weights to keep her girly figure.

20.25 mile per gallon in a diesel Merc sprinter van , that's seems very thirsty for a diesel . I think u need to dump the granite countertops ⚓
it actually doesn't do much difference. Its only about 150 pounds.

12 mpg wow in the UK in Yorkshire full of hills that wouldn't be any good £6,50 a gallon here I think that's $10 dollars .. I owned a Subaru Impreza WRX 260 HP 4x4 if I drove it steady it would do 22,5 mpg to the gallon driving like a grandma.
Yeah thats some expensive gas. Gas where we are is about 2.50 a gallon, so it doesn't cost us too much. 22 is pretty good! I think its because we've got a house in the back of it haha

Bureau of Land Managment areas. Basically, federally owned land in the USA that isn't being used for much and that the public is allowed to use for recreational purposes. At least that's my experience/understanding.
Yep thats exactly it. It protects the land from being mined, oiled, and built on as well. It helps keep our wildlife safe, and gives people the freedom to explore places without having to pay. Paying for camping is always a little crazy to us.
