At one of my kids wellness checks, a nurse told me to wait to potty train until they could walk backwards. Apparently, the muscles needed to walk backwards are the same as bladder and bowel control???? I was a bit skeptical however, with all three of my kids (2 boys and a girl) I waited until they could walk backwards and, in three days (for all of them) they were day and night trained, no accidents and no treats required! The boys were both 2 1/2 and my daughter was 18 mths. I recommend this tip to everyone as it worked so brilliantly for me.

I really needed to hear that first tip. My son is almost 3 and I get so many questions from my mom about when he’s going to be potty trained. The truth is, I tried it and he wasn’t ready, so I’m waiting. Thanks for the reassurance.

My oldest two basically trained themselves because I waited and did what I refer to as lazy training. Oldest turned three and just started going and was trained in a few days never had an accident. Second kiddo was a few months after three, same deal. Third kiddo has autism, he's 6 still not trained but sometimes likes to go pee, and 4th kiddo was my longest she was almost four like couple months away from it and finally trained. I think she was delayed cause of the 6 year old still being in diapers. But it's been worth it to wait. No accidents, no charts, no timers, no treats or bribes. People sometimes ask me if my 6 year old is going to train and I'm like he probably will eventually but I'm just following his lead. If he wants to go I get excited for him and take him but I don't push it

We tried with my son when he was 2, 2.5 and it wasn’t until after he turned 3 that he was willing to try. The pee part only took him a few days. The poop part took a few more months until he was willing to go in the training toilet

My oldest, 13 now, quickly learned how to manipulate the system: when he realized he got an M&M every time he peed in the potty, he started squeezing out a drop or two, over and over, to get an M&M each time. 🤦🏼‍♀️😆 He’s still always looking for loopholes!
Great tips here, thanks Jordan 😊

Currently potty training my almost 3yo & 6th child. I watched incase there's something different to try but you pretty much do it all exactly how we do. We also learned the hard way to just wait til they are really ready. My 3rd hated the idea of underwear finally on his 3rd birthday I was like why? And he said because I dont want to pee on my fire trucks I was like oh thats why you go on the potty & he said ohhh then was potty trained completely from that point in lol.

I have 6 kids. The eldest is 12 and we started calling them "poop treats" when she started training. Unfortunately, that name has stuck. Even after they are trained, they get "poop treats" for finishing chores, special rewards, etc. You should see the looks we get in the grocery store when my kids ask to get poop treats for the poop treat bin.

Both my girls were potty trained at 18 months. Picked a weekend and stayed in the kitchen and baked while potty training. Every time they went number 1 they got 1 mini m&m. If they went number 2 they got 3 mini m&m's. Within a weekend both girls were basically trained. I still put a diaper on them at night or if we were going out to run errands. But by 2 the didn't have accidents overnight and LOVED LOVED LOVED going to the potty in stores.

I love the book toilet training in less than a day. it was created for mentally handicapped adults, no negative reinforcement. Worked like a charm for all my kids. Took about half a day to train them at 20 months. We were done paying so much for diapers, saved us a TON of money. Just remember that different things work for different kids, mamas and families. Do what works for you and yours and don't feel guilty about it.

I was pressured to start potty training my daughter at 2.5. We did the 3 day method and it was terrible. We struggled for probably a year. And then out of nowhere she peed in her pull up and hated it. Straight to underwear and no accidents (even at night) from that point on. Proof that kids will do anything when they are ready

Solid subscriber for years now and I love everything in this video EXCEPT potty treats - I know this is a very common practice that a lot of people use and it definitely seems to work in the short term but can I just tell you, as a professional career nanny for 10+ years with a specialty in infants and toddlers, potty training is the most effective and happens the quickest when a) the child is actually ready, just like Jordan said and b) you make it completely normalized and just something that you do. Celebrating going pee or poo in the potty with clapping smiling, maybe a high five, for the first week or so is great and after that maybe keep it to just a simple “good job” or narrating “you felt the urge to go and you made it to the potty on time” as gentle reinforcement that they’re doing the right thing. But I highly advise that once they start to get the hang of it, to STOP celebrating it like it’s a super huge, big thing. No one claps for you when you go pee in the toilet so by making it normalized and just another something that we do, it stops becoming a big deal to them and they’re less likely to build up resistance, hyper-fixation or any kind of issues towards it. They’ll be intrinsically motivated to use the toilet because that’s just what’s expected and normal to do and the natural consequence of not doing it is feeling uncomfortable with soiled underwear.
For accidents you can again use a gentle reminder like “oh it looks like we didn’t get there in time, let’s clean you up, pick out a new pair of underpants and we’ll get to the potty on time next time”. You’ll want to speak over them the expectancy that they know what to do and are able to do it: no shame, no negativity, no bribery - in short, no reward or punishment. Mommy uses the potty, daddy uses the potty, older siblings use the potty, that’s just what you do now 🤷🏼‍♀️
For naps and nighttime, you can explain that the only reason they still wear a diaper is because they’re in their crib and cannot get up to use the potty. After saying it enough times, I’ll usually ask “why do we still wear diapers when we’re in our crib?” and pretty soon they’ll usually be able to tell me. It gives a very clear understanding that they are more than capable of recognizing when they need to go and holding it for a minute or two until they can get there so the only reason they’re still in a diaper is because they physically can’t get to the toilet but as soon as they wake up, we take it off and put our underwear on and that’s what’s expected now (again, gently and compassionately not authoritatively or shamefully).
Also highly recommend bare bottoms for the first day or two. Hang out in the kitchen, outside or non-carpeted areas. I’m telling you, the initial shock and realization that there is nothing to catch the pee or poop is usually enough for them to want to at least attempt to get it into the potty. It feels better than having it drip down their legs so when they realize the potty will catch it, again, they’ll be intrinsically motivated to use it (another example of natural consequences and letting your child discover what’s right for them).
And please lord SKIP THE PULL-UPS unless you’re trying Jordan’s trick (which I’ve never done but could see in working in a special circumstance like a road trip as long as you talk about it first and make sure they understand they still need to let you know if they need to use the potty). Other than that, pull ups just delay delay DELAY. Avoid them, you’ll thank yourself later 👌

I agree! I have potty trained 4 and waiting until the child is ready is so important! I found undies are better than pull-ups, too. I would never spend the extra money for them. The expense and the fact that they feel like a diaper just makes sense to skip them! Lots of good tips!

    • @leannepayne4081
      @leannepayne4081 2 роки тому +1

I tried pull ups with my first who is now 4 and so fast I decided to not use them. I only wanted them for naps and out of the house, but I had extra diapers left over so I just used them. Also, pull ups are more expensive too. Waste of money if you ask me. At least for most kids. For all other times I used undies. Then one day he just said no to diapers at night and he hasn't worn any since.

Thank you SOOOO much for this video! We are currently potty training our 2.5 yr old boy and it is rough to say the least. Getting so much flak from my mom about how we need to get on the ball and how she was able to potty train me and my siblings in a day. I don’t know how she did it. These were great tips! Will definitely be giving them a try

My son is 4 and always reacted horribly for bath time. I knew once he would calm down and be okay with baths, I could introduce a new thing. Because this is a HUGE change for them. Bow that he loves baths, I feel confident training him and he has been doing well. A few accidents, but otherwise pretty good progress.

Thirty years ago when potty training my son, which was during the Summer, I let him play around inside the house with just his shirt on, no shorts. He learned very quickly. He'd begin to pee, immediately say something and off he'd race to the potty which was close by.

Your hubs has some STRONG genes, that's for sure, because all the boys look just like him! My son didn't get potty trained until he was 3ish - the 'trick' for him was my babysitter having her 5yo son take Nick in the bathroom w/him to observe how to go in the toilet 'boy style' (I was divorced at the time). He went from refusing to try, to thinking he was 'the stuff' going in the 'big boy toilet' overnight, lol.

This is so true! You need a healthy balance. Kids won’t potty until they are ready.

If you can't afford a snazzy bidet, consider getting a bidet hose fitted. We found them when we lived abroad and dubbed them "the bum gun". They easily hook up to the tap attachment on the side of the toilet and have a trigger/hose style nozzle at the end. They're super cheap from homeware and hardware stores. They're everywhere in Asia and the Middle East and so convenient. They'd make cleaning up accidents and possibly cloth diapers even easier.

We did cloth diapers with my first kid and while we really couldn't make it work for our other kids (too much work...) we had the cloth diaper sprayer still attached to the toilet. Absolute game changer for potty training accidents. Highly recommend

My husband and I both work, both kids in daycare, and my son started potty training there. For poops (we call "Big Potty"), I taught him my techniques for labor 😁 Relax your jaw, open your hands, deep low breath. It makes it less scary for him and a sign to me that he's going. ... Not like I can't smell it though.
Fingers crossed our girl will be just as easy to train later whenever she's ready!

Both my kids were potty trained around 3.5 years old. My nephew on the other hand is potty trained and he's 6 months old. Something called elimination communication. His parents basically put him on the potty when he started holding his own head and they learned his body language when he wants to poop or pee 😁

I babysit my granddaughters during the day. When the 4 year old was 2.5 we very easily potty trained her. But the poo was a bit more difficult. We started giving her a gummy treat for each pee and 2 gummies for a poo. We had her 4 year old cousin with us for a few days too. It really helped that for each pee or poo we also rewarded her cousin just for encouraging little cousin. It took 3 days. We found cool dinosaur shape gummies at Aldi.

I used rubber pants over underwear during training. My oldest wasn't fully potty-trained until he was almost 3 1/2 years old. 2 months later, we had our 2nd child. No regression. A few months later, he had surgery and couldn't sit on a toilet because of a cast. Still no regression! As much as he hated using a bed pan or urinal bottle, he didn't want to wear diapers. I think it's because we waited until he was completely ready to be trained!

For cleaning poopy underwear at the toilet, I’d use a cheap toilet scrubbing brush to help remove the poop. And of course spray with stain remover before putting it in the washer.

No kids myself, but I have watched my nieces & nephews. Sis used cloth diapers for the boys, so similar to the poopy underwear. If you're at home, put it fully in the toilet water to soak, then retrieve after a bit, preferably wearing gloves. I've even used those tricks myself, as I have IBS & it happens to all of us.
