Gopher guts is one of my favorites and one of the first I came to understand. The first part is talking about his divorce and his life falling apart. Coffee going cold. Mold on his moonpies. He says it was an amicable marooning. Like it was on friendly enough terms, but he feels abandoned and feels suicide taking up more ground in his thoughts. Wide lane and looting-getting bigger. He calls his mom about the split for comfort, but feels even more alone after they talk. She offers to pray for him but he wants real world solutions. She said "I'll keep you in my prayers"
I said "i need to hide a body"
She said "Ok honey talk to you on friday"
He feels misunderstood and wonders what ties him and his mom together, why he would even think she could help him. He says "apparently" they have the same blood, as if hes surprised by it, and thinks its weird that they are connected by blood alone and not a feeling of connection. He wonders who made up that blood is thicker than water rule and why, and bitterly says it was probably some dad who wanted to reconnect with his children after his life falls apart, but says that it doesnt always go the way we hope. He talks about his mom hanging out around heavens gate and contrasts that with his dirty dark life. He starts to note that he is less and less like the people around him. Looking in the mirror thinking "who is there? Simian (human) or lizard (a cold blooded reptile), and feels that the difference is dissapearing, and the people most relates with are criminals and people who hate people and the world. He squirms in grimey darkness, not having any ambition, staying away from people in general and doing drugs to maintain and stay ok,, keeping his hyde (evil mr. Hyde versus the passive and good natured dr. Jeckyl ) jeckylized with contraband. He talks about his beliefs in family and love and the things that he held sacred dying, and as "mysticism" or fantasy. And says he will just handle it on his own. He cautions that the only way to conquer this is to not question it. Dont play the game hes playing. He then pretty freely admits that maybe he has been shitty to these people, and that maybe he deserves this disconnection with others. Maybe he deserves to eat all the shit hes getting. He hurts people who try to help him. Hes been completely undeserving of those who love and care for him and kiss him on the temple, and offer to listen to him. He wishes he could undo and redo everything, even though it brought him the love that these other people have shown him, and this wanting to undo it hurts them. He talks about how he preaches tolerance, but is a hippocrit, because he does this while trying to pretzel (or twist up) other peoples beliefs, so he isnt being very tolerant. He feels he unfairly hates people when they werent there for him when he feels they could or should have been and doesnt let it go. He talks about being his own worst enemy. The chorus/hooks bring up that he pulls these things/people out of their environment, and supports and loves them, but then he lets them go. He can create the relationships, but he cant maintain them. It might be that he has too high of expectations, for them and for himself. But he can only hold on for so long. They either leave him or he cuts them off, and the song thinks on who he is, and what he does that makes this happen. I love them, and i support them, but then i let them go. Or maybe they are leaving me. He ponders how it is hes fucking up all these relationships, and very honestly approaches his faults.

The way I take it is he is comparing a someone from a position of authority ( like a parent or teacher) telling someone younger how special they are to instill some false meaning and pride and then releasing them into the wild where reality will beat them down for the rest of their life. Like the futility of telling some small animal their beauty and purpose just to release them into the wild to be eaten by something one step up in the food chain.

It’s a song about how hard it is to be a parent, and how difficult emotional stability is to attain.
The hook has Aes caring for and complimenting 3 animals (aes has 2 brothers) before he promptly releases them and never sees them again.
He calls his animals “tenacious, lauded, exalted, etc” but he doesnt really know that. He’s just trying to teach them to be confident and successful before he send them off into the world, all alone.
The “oh.” At the end of the hook shows that he now understands how difficult being a parent can be.
AES has some sad songs, but this one can reliably make me cry, especially when I’m going through a hard part of my life

I've been watching your Aes Rock reactions for a minute now, and I absolutely love watching people become fans of his. The man is truly the Shakespeare of our time.
I don't know if you're aware of this or not, but the song Tetra is rumored to be a subliminal diss towards El-P.
Apparently, after Camu Tao's death, a lot of light began to shine on just how broke Def Jux was. El was supposedly hoarding cash, not paying Aes what he'd been promised yet expecting features and contract fulfillment. Barbury Coast, Aesop's weakest offering, was the byproduct of that pressure.
El-P took a lot of advantage of Aesop while at Def Jux, using a song on Aesop's album Bazooka Tooth to draw attention to himself and his beef with Eastern Conference (7L & Esoteric, Apathy, Mr Eon, etc). "We're Famous" was quite literally an ego stroke, and nothing more.
Tetra is a proclamation of that position of servitude El-P thrust him into.
I won't flood your comment section with assemblies of examples. Give it a listen, though. There's some very interesting and suggestive language of El's betrayal.
"I wouldn't piss on your coffin. But when I see your pictures, I draw dicks on it."

@@iammrwack Yeah, it's crazy how much of Aesop's success El takes sole credit for. He even lumps Bazooka Tooth among his personal crowning achievements in his diss to Esoteric "7700."

What he is "letting them go" he is talking about himself and his siblings. There's three of them. The expectations that his parents have put on the children and they didn't turn out the way they wanted. In the beginning the blood And water chapter pertains to old Plays that choreographed who was related and how wasnt. It describes the distance between himself and his parents and his you wouldn't even know they were related of it weren't for the blood and water chapter that society gives us, calling relatives sister, brother, mom, dad. This might by one of my fave Aes tracks. I like how on the last verse he almost drops all his metaphor and cryptic writing style and just straight up says what he feels. And then I love the parts of the song where hes describing pulling animals and snakes out of things.. I don't understand exactly what he means by it all but it sounds cool and trippy af lol Dude is so good at creating vivid ass imagery with his words.

Aesop Rock tha Legendary lyricist and GOAT! His vocabulary is insane. Alot of people write him off simply because they don't understand him and think it's gibberish. The more you listen the more you understand him and what he's trying to convey. It's not gibberish. It's philosophical and lyrical genius.

It's always a puzzle with him. You look and try to put the pieces together but sometimes they don't fit. You keep trying and finally they do. When you're done you're staring at a complete picture. Sad that it isn't always a nice one, but it's real, at least to him.

This is a few years late but just wanted to leave my two cents - in all of the choruses, he talks about collecting three animals, telling them they'll do great things, and then just letting them go. Aes is the middle child of three, and I always saw this as a symbolic telling of how parents will tell their children they'll go on to do great things, but once they're out in the world, will leave them to fend for themselves.

Yo, dude Aeasop Rock is my favorite artist, too.I don't know if you are aware, but Ace participated in a group called The Uncuded, which released an album in 2013 containing some of his best verses. Unlike his usual art, Ace is more direct on this album(though it has a lot of metaphors too) and his partner Kimya Dawson in her verses, helps to clarify his points. Check the song TV on 10, dude seriously, it will blow your brains out

Aesop Rock should be used as an advocacy for literacy. If you aren't well read . . well good luck with understanding Aesop Rock lyrics That being said as a well educated person who studied Latin and New Testament Greek I have still have learned new words/terms from Aesop Rock. Including "Hoi Polloi", which I really likely just had forgotten.

We sang "Great Green Gobs of Greasy, Grimy Gopher Guts" before meals at Boy Scout camp, with each table/troop adding their own disgusting lines, so the middle pairs of lines multiplied as you repeated going around the room. It was a rhyming/alliteration/memory game, while also letting you try to out-gross each other out.
Almost every nursery rhyme was a protest song, mocking rulers or their laws/taxes/religion, or illegitimate-children. "Ring Around the Rosie" was about the plague. "Here We Go 'Round the Mulberry Bush" was about the mulberry tree in Wakefield Prison's exercise yard. Humpty Dumpty was written about a cannon that exploded. Numerous were aimed at "Bloody Mary" (Queen Mary I), like "Mary Mary Quite Contrary"- her "garden" growing referred to graveyards. Silver bells were thumb screws, maids all in a row were iron maidens and later a nickname for the guillotine. "Cockle shells" were testicle clamps. She chopped the "tails" off "Three Blind (Protestant) Mice" who fled. Sometimes there was useful info in there, other times it was just insults you could lose you life for, if not coded in metaphors.
