  • Yamaha FJR1300 ES Motorcycle Suspension Setup - The Yamaha FJR1300 ES is a fantastic motorcycle with a very easy and convenient electronic suspension package, but it certainly has some major limitations as far as dialing in the bike to the best settings. Some things simply aren't there, some are limited and some may be simply wrong for you. This goes through setting rider sag and the best possible rebound dampening for your situation giving you the best possible performance and tire life. I will have a more complete setup video later on a different bike with full controls available.

    It's very obvious that you really know and are well aquainted with your FJR. That , by itself , makes these videos worth gold! Thank you for sharing your knowledge. These insights make a huge difference in how much pleasure you can get out of one of these!

    Hello Bryan, just want to tell you, that your videos have been very helpful in my learning process on the "new to me" FJR. Shes a 2015 with 2000 miles. And I'm trying to learn the most I can about her. Thank you

    I'm rocking a 05 ABS model. Previous owner tightened up the front suspension, so I can feel the rear being less responsive. I think I'll be talking to Racetech this winter and sending them my rear shock. I rode a buddy's BMW 1000CC, $21000 bike, and the vastly greater awareness of the available traction, due to a top of the line, brand new suspension was a huge awakening.

    Hi Bryan, excellent video. I’ve tried this method on my 16 ES and got most of my settings right. A few things to add. Some FJR owners will drop the triple clamps to make steering more responsive as it changes the rake and moves weight forward. You had mentioned the ES adjusts rebound and not compression. My understanding is the left fork does compression and the right does rebound. Note there are electronic connections on both forks. I suspect it does both. The settings for damping work with a different range on the different preload settings. Generally the one helmet damping range is softer than the two helmet damping range. So if you want stiffer damping it may help to pick the two helmet mode. The two helmet mode lifts the rear for one rider making more of a performance setting. Footpegs are higher too. For FJR rider technique, be sure to lean forward on aggressive corners. Let the bike move under you. If you sit upright the suspension must fight your weight too, so it can become bouncy in a corner. Thanks again for the ES videos, love your channel.

    Good stuff. I must admit when I purchased my used 06 I stayed away from the ES models for fear I would not be able to fine tune it. We are not too far off in weight. (265lbs) and I felt I would need better manual control of how I set the suspension.

    There are several videos of how to set up the suspension on 2013 FJRs and later, but no videos on how to set up suspension for pre 2013 FJR's, which seems to be a lot harder. I know about the hard soft switch, but I have heard that there are other settings that you can do. If you could do a video for us old timers, that would be amazing

    Hello I enjoy your channel. You seem very knowledgeable so I have a question I’m looking to buy a 2017 Yamaha fjr1300es white. Not a police bike they changed the suspension to an 20 axion so the suspension light stays on. What can I do? Should I replace shocks or what. Are the axion shocks better. I’m confused.

    Bryan, have you noticed any difference between soft and hard damping?. Ive tried everything from soft -3 to hard + 3 and cannot feel any difference when riding.

    Hello. I am just lost totally, on this topic. I curently have a r1200rt 2007,with esa. I just liked the electronic setting. But not such a fan of the engine. Would want more power, smoother engine. I was thinking on an fjr, and you say the the suspension is better on a model vs es. I would need it to be easely set, from 1 up tu 2 up, as i ride solo and with the wiefie... Please give feedback, based on your experience. Thank you

    Thanks for the great videos. They are very informing. Have you done a review on a Honda cb500x? If you have I would like to watch it and get your take on that bike. Thanks

      Not yet - Honda really hates doing Demo rides as a company policy so you won't find many.

    I've since found out that there are Compression settings they're built into the left fork leg and Rebound into the right fork leg. Having said that they are, of course, operated only by the Hard +3 to the Soft -3 adjustment.
    I've done over 1,500 miles on my 2019 and I'm still unable to dial in the rebound/compression to my liking.

    Hi buddy, awesome information. I just bought a 2008 FJR and I was wondering if you have any info on what can be adjusted on my bike and how to do it. Do you have any advice on the setup? I am a big boy at 6'7'' and 300lb. Thank you!

    • @TwoWheelObsession
      @TwoWheelObsession  7 років тому

      Same procedure in the full setup vid - you need your service manual to find what your adjustments are and what your travel numbers are. It's fairly limited but can make a good difference. You will need to always keep your rear preload on hard to be as close to correct as possible.

    hi Bryan will you be changing your fork oil anytime soon? and will you be doing a video if you are? think it's surposed to be changed every 2 years or so. Still loving my 2015 ae (UK version of es) it's a great bike which seems to do it all, I'm off to Germany & Austria again soon and it just eats up the miles effortlessly so can't wait!
    cheers mate

    • @TwoWheelObsession
      @TwoWheelObsession  7 років тому

      +Gary Chivers there is no service interval for fork oil. You change it if the performance is not to your specifications. As it wears it will have a wider range of viscosity from cold to hot but for street use it takes a very long time for me to even notice. If I do it yep I'll do a video. It's just removing the forks and dumping the oil out the top. My steering head repack vid gets you 90% of the way there.

    I am been watching your videos for a while now and am impressed with your Knowledge.
    So I need to ask you your opinion on my 2014 Yamaha FJR1300.
    I just had my tires replaced and now I have a "death wobble" at low speeds.
    I had this problem before due to a miss-matched tire. and replacing the tire fixed the problem.
    Like I said I just replaced the tire new and the trouble is back. the tires are correct for my bike.
    Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
    Marc

      I would suggest you read the computer codes at a dealer or acquire a reader. Check your fuses, and check all es menu items to be sure they still work. I have heard that adjusting the preload with riders sitting on the bike is hard on the mechanism and it may fail or wear out. Good luck!

    I absolutely agree with assessment of the ES versions suspension and it largely applies to any motorcycle with these suspension set ups. I have to disagree with how you set up your suspension though I do absolutely realise it's a hugely personal thing. Since I started paying attention to suspension set up I have used aftermarket fork springs and valving and replacement rear shocks, (again it's a personal thing) I have my bikes set up so the bike compresses and returns to a complete stop, anything extra and I find I'm compensating for and fighting to control the bike but one must pay close attention to rebound speed during set up. Even on the firmest setting you showed on the ES I'd find inadequate but I did note the rebound speed was too slow so it'd be no good times two.

      Well, I follow Dave Moss methods, and that's what he does - it always feels wonderful to me. A firmer setup might be better for the track, I have no idea or experience. Street, this is how I love it setup.

    • @NZsarge1
      @NZsarge1 7 років тому

      TwoWheelObsession As I said it's very much a personal thing not to mention riding style. Funny you should mention Dave Moss, I've had him set up my bikes personally each time visits New Zealand until recently, that said I ride semi aggressively in the more appropriate sections of twistier roads but I don't ride track days, my set up is not that firm.
