    Very nice! Thank you for making this comparison; it was very fun to watch/listen. They both sound great to me. For some of the comparisons, I wouldn’t have been able to detect a difference in a blind test. The ones in which I could distinguish differences were equally-ish good with a slight edge sometimes for one and sometimes the other (all very subjective of course). I have the Trigon desktop and quite love it and a Minimoog Model D of which I am equally fond. If I were in the spot where I was going to buy one of these two, I would … mmm … maybe lean toward the Muse … or maybe the Trigon. Both are wonderful synths with great history and legacy behind them.

    I'm afraid I will miss the stereo analog distortion of the trigon. Can you make a video comparing heavily distorted prog rock leads? (i need to know how heavy/growly the muse can get)... And some smooth creamy minimoog leads while you're at it?
    Thanks!
    Oh! And a quick tom sawyer test since the muse doesn't have a "vintage knob" to mess up the filter time per voice in unison mode

      I personally prefeer the Trigon. It's pretty obvious that the signal path on the Trigon 6 is way more clear and not cluttered with modulation through DSP. When I synth has a mod matrix the architecture becomes different. It seems like mod marix based synths like Pro 3, Take 5, Rev 2, 3rd Wave get their sound a bit lighter compared to the non mod matrix based like P6, OB6, T6 and OBX8. Since I own all except for Obx8 I can tell that difference is there :)

    Great video! I came away with a different opinion than expected though. In most of the tests, at least to my ears the Trigon sounded better. This was especially noticable in Part 9 - Stereo Pan Effect... While it's impressive the Muse can do what it did from a technical/synth nerd standpoint, I feel the fact the Trigon couldn't "keep up" feature-wise was exactly by design from Dave, because to my ears it sounds a thousand times more pleasing. Most of the patches on the Trigon seemed to have more presence.. Some patches on the Muse had a blur that was very pleasing to my ear, and I thought it sounded good solo but that the Trigon would sound better in a mix. One exception was the Part 4 Bass, I preferred the tone coming from the Muse, something about the way it rounded and blends the upper harmonics into the sound (but I'm not sure if that's a difference in filter characteristics, envelopes or knob settings etc)... that was significant for me because if I buy anything with a ladder filter I have certain expectations for bass. A video deep dive focusing just on mono bass sounds would be awesome (although admittedly not what many would buy a poly for).

    • @deepsynths

      The Trigon is one of my most used synths in the studio. I love the layout of the controls, so well and thought out. The sound is just solid. The Muse is great and a different experience when you sit in front of it. I've used the Trigon for some really good bass parts. It beat out the Pro 3 in certain mixes. So the Trigon can do bass but the can Muse go places on bass the Trigon can't. Thanks for checking out my video!

    It sounds to me like the Muse’s filter isn’t actually “wide open” when it seems like it’s wide open. Lot’s of synths are like this and need some further modulation to get that filter opened up. Sometimes just cranking up the key tracking is enough. I know Sequential’s modern synths definitely open up all the way at an init patch, making them appear brighter.

    • @deepsynths
      @deepsynths  4 місяці тому +1

      I didn't talk about the overload slider on the Muse in this video (I mentioned it in part 1 or 2) but cranking that more has an effect on the filter sounding more open. Too much doesn't always sound right so you have to strike a balance. Thanks for watching!

    Yay! 🎉 Here we go …
    I’ll just give my opinion:-
    In general terms, they are more non-identical twins, than cousins …
    Muse strengths are moreso Bass and Softer Pads
    Trigon strengths are moreso Brighter Pads and Leads
    So it makes sense when you say they compliment each other, and these strengths seem reflected/emphasised in your combo jam at the end …
    Part 1
    Muse, Loose Softer Vintage; Trigon, Tighter Brighter Modern … Softer Pads vs Brighter Cut … one man’s soft, is another’s dull; one man’s cut, is another’s harsh, etc etc etc … 😏. Complimentary. But then they are both clearly capable of having more of the opposite dialed in (eg you easily dialed the Trigon ‘down’ to be a LOT softer/much closer to the Muse), so these comments are just relative tendencies/strengths, as I hear them here/with these settings/through these speakers/etc …
    Part 2
    To my surprise, I preferred the Trigon - more Juice AND Cut … More like a bold Mono … Muse was just dialed darker (and seems to have more Bass anyway), and we associate Bass (and the “Moog” label, lol) with Moog …
    Part 3
    Surprised to hear you say the Muse was Brighter and the Trigon Smoother - seemed the other way around to me, on the video 🤷🏻‍♂️ …
    Both great, just different/complimentary …
    Part 4
    Muse wins as a bass machine; has the Bass heft /clarity … but neither is going to match the timbre/tone/Juice of the Voyager …
    Part 5
    Both squeezing out a good amount of Juice; I just prefer the Muse here, Soft Warm & Full …
    Part 6
    Muse was always playing catch-up here; that Low-Cut helped a lot, but still Blurred/Dull compared to the Trigon
    Part 7
    Preferred the Muse here - almost a reversal of tonal characteristics from Part 6 🙃🤷🏻‍♂️ …
    Part 8
    More similar sounding in this Part than in any other, I think? Muse just a bit Softer; Trigon a but more Modern/Cut …
    Part 9
    Trigon’s turn to be stuck playing catch-up; this Part taps into the strengths of the Muse …
    Part 10
    Highlights that Muse leans to Big Soft Pads; the Trigon, Bright Modern Pads …
    Bass comparisons with the Voyager (someone else requested this also), and Lead comparisons with the Trigon, would both be very interesting.
    Great comparison! Thanks! 😎👍🏼

      @deepsynths  4 місяці тому +2

      Nice breakdown! Thanks for all the input! Good points. Yeah the Muse in comparison to the Trigon often seemed like the "laid back" dude in the room and the Trigon wanted to be the forward leaning "in your face" guy. Regarding my comment on the brightness in the one comparison with the Muse being brighter. That's how it seemed in the studio while recording. When I listened to the video after it was posted on my phone in another room I thought the opposite.
      Thanks for watching!

    Good stuff! They are both awesome synths, and they seem to be able to fulfill many of the same roles. It helps to get the muse in tune, you may have to run the full tuning process, as that's what took care of tuning for my Muse. From there on, just running th quick tune option should suffice to get the muse in tune. I don't even have to do that anymore.. shortly after turning it on it sounds perfect.
    Overall, the Trigon seems to sound a little stiffer/controlled, in the same way that my Prophet 6 does. It's easier to get organic sounding patches out of the Muse. Much to my surprise, the Muses' saw oscs seem to have more high end content (they sound a little fizzier), and the square on the Trigon is a little buzzier.
    I guess the correct answer is that you need both ;)
    Then again.. good luck taking the Trigon in this kind of territory ;) ua-cam.com/video/pV1MBMqMOxA/v-deo.html

      @deepsynths  4 місяці тому +3

      I agree with your points. My Muse isn't as stable on warm up as the Trigon. It sort of bugs me but when it get's fully warmed up the voices are dead on with a tuner. So I'm afraid to do that full tuning recalibration just to improve that one small factor.
      I'm worried I'll make it worse, you know. Was it easy to do? Thanks for watching!

    • @payt01
      @payt01 4 місяці тому +3

      @@deepsynths yeah you just switch it off for about an hour, so it cools down as far as it can, then you run the tuning routine. It'll take over an hour, and Muse will make noises (you may want to turn it's volume down before running the routine), and when it's done, the individual voices are more in tune with eachother.
      There's nothing to it, just let Muse do it's thing and that's it. From there on you can use quick tune. Use that a couple of times and Muse learns what to do in certain temperatures.. at least that's what I gathered it does ;)

      It works well beside my Trigon and OB-6 in the studio. I'm using it over them now in my current project because the sounds just seem to fit better for the track. All 3 have their own sound and character so ultimately it's your call as to which fits you best. The Muse is very "musical" in its tone where the Trigon is very punchy and direct. Hope that helps. The Trigon sounds more direct but slightly one-dimensional. The more details of the Muse gives a wider and deeper feel. Trigon transports its tone more on one level and it's sounding a bit harder. Every synth has a purpose, there's no best, because no one synth can do everything, and that'd be boring anyway. It's a subjective question, just like all music, and just an opinion. People choose what they like by the transients in the voices. It's the tiny details that lead us one direction or another. An obsession with gear though, has nothing to do with music, and becomes a collectors game, and this quest for the perfect sound, becomes a loss to creativity, and productivity. Leading to an insecurity, or lack of confidence, with too many choices. That's our take on the issue. Keep it simple. Your imagination is more important than the instruments. Because that's where the music comes from.
    Thanks for this, even though it didn't sway us either way.

      I definitely agree that in the end it's very subjective and depends on the individual's taste. Just like music. I've had music promoted in the past to DJ's and radio stations and you'd get feedback from different people on the same track that was polar opposites, "this is great! will give full support!" then "not really feeling this one, sorry" ha, ha.. Still waiting for Behringer to clone the Memorymoog, but using Cherry Audio Polysynths for now. Used UB-Xa goes for around $1K. When Indonesian made Minis hit the market, they would probably be under $2K. Some high-end flagships like the OBX8 are currently discounted on Sweetwater site. The Trigon has its strengths in stability. You know what you’re going to receive when dialing up a patch. Not much movement other than pan spread and some LFO tricks. It’s reliable but, certainly not organic. Jmo.

    Both are great - this comparison reminds me of OB-X8 vs. OB-6, or Prophet Rev. 4 vs. Prophet-6.. so is the Muse more lush and organic in the Oscillators & Filters vs. the midfocused Trigon (better for a monotimbral synth) - there is no better, it's a design choice..

    • @deepsynths
      @deepsynths  4 місяці тому +1

      The Oscillators alone are very close but adding in the filters I'd say yes, you could describe it that way. The filters feel very different when your moving them around. The Muse seems to haves a bit more “presence” than the Trigon. Not sure if the filters where tuned exactly. I always like to have a spectrum analyzer going and drive the filter into self oscillation and tune it as precisely as I can, but I have heard this type of thing even then. Like the Muse is “leaking” a bit. Not necessarily a bad thing, but without the context of a song, it does pop out, as you say. One thing I’d say that would clinch it for me, is that Sequential instruments receive polyphonic aftertouch and MPE (not sure if the Trigon does MPE, but my Prophet 6 does) and this is a major difference that puts Moog out of any contest to get into my studio.
    Ultimately, both wonderful instruments and I can imagine making great sounds with either. I’m currently comparing my 3rd Wave with the new Waldorf Microwave plugin, and in many ways I like the plugin more, and then all of the sudden I’ll make a tweak that makes the 3rd Wave sound amazing in a way I can’t get the plugin to do. As always, if you really want to make good music you have to own all the instruments. 😂

    I bought this Moog Muse, was crazy about it and here comes the thing: Unfortunately, "Moog Muse" has terribly disappointed me.. To turn on this keyboard it takes more than a minute (!).. Functions do not work properly, lights go on and off quickly and without meaning. The speed of the envelope generators is WAY too slow.. Chords played faster produce unwanted fast arpeggios. I tested everything and even the new software (1.2) did not fix these serious bugs, so I have to warn about it.. De-tuning is a big problem, even the tuning function does not work. The keyboard froze even after programming faster sequences.. The overall sound was thin and not as fat as my old Moog products (Mini Moog, Memory Moog). My impression: This instrument is too digitally controlled inside by very slow and in the worst case... often incomplete processing. I returned the Moog Muse to the seller and I have to say, there is something very wrong with this new Moog and it doesn't sound like a typical Moog at all!
    The sound is also bad and not rich. Too many other synths sound fuller, richer and faster (envelope generators) and the filter here doesn't do what it promises!!
    Forget the actual "Moog" products. They are not what they promise and what they say they are.
    Direct comparison with my old Sequential Circuit products and many intensive tests finally opened my eyes after many hours, folks.
    I'm sorry for all of you who fell into this trap like me.
    Sooner or later you will confirm what I am writing here.
