Loving mine, floyd rose hasnt gave me any issues, ive only changed the tuning 3 or 4 times in the last 2 months or so... honestly the main reason I got this was because it wasnt a signature model, but had that dime feel.
There arent too much affordable Indonesian ML's with floyds out there instead of this one, but I live in Europe and Thomann isnt saying anything good about the guitar going back into stock soon bc of corona :(
Thought Id chime in again but first string change since my purchase, used the same D'Addario EXL120's, cleaned it up and put em on, seems I might have to adjust spring tension but Im gonna let the strings strech some more before I get the philips screw driver out lol. Not as bad as I thought It was going to be
I got my bc rich mockingbird with a floyd 1000 about 7 months ago. I havent had to tune it once since it was srt up. Cheap floyds suck but anything better than a special will hold tune forever
I believe that’s the Dean ML that I’m looking to buy within the next couple of weeks. Those things play like butter and I love the tones that come from them. You did a good job doing a demo of it!
Ben, you should consider installing a string retainer / string tree on the headstock to help with keeping it in tune after locking the strings. Generally speaking, if the strings aren't completely flat against the nut after it is setup (truss rod, intonation, tuning, etc) they will go sharp the moment you lock the strings. If you look at the nut from the side, and can see space under the strings, then the baseline angle of the headstock is not enough to keep them flat against the nut. String retainers are often not installed on guitars in that price range for God knows what reason since it's just a 10 dollar part, and it will help in the long run. Also, you probably know this, but kind reminder: Make sure the center raised line of the locking nuts are parallel to the strings. Anyway, I highly recommend getting a string retainer made of metal so that it doesn't buckle under the tension of the screws. You can find them on floydrose.com in tons of different finishes for your Floyd Rose 1000. Beautiful guitar btw! I have a Chinese DFH, and a few Washburn variants.
Hi Rex, thanks so much for the advice and for watching the video! I think you may be absolutely right about a string retainer and it never occurred to me that there wasn't one on this guitar until you mentioned. But basically every Dean with a Floyd Rose in their doesn't have a string retainer, so maybe there is a good reason why?
@@benforsey I'd say most likely because it's not a requirement to have it. It's more of a convenience mod. However, most USA models do come with them. Cost cutting perhaps as well?
Fu-tone is the best company for floyd parts. That dude has stuff that make owning a floyd easy. The intonation tool, the brass blocks, stops, the tremolo arm with the allen key built in, all kinds of shit. If you have a floyd, check out their website.
I have a 7 string Ibanez from the late 90’s with a FR. I’ve always let the new strings break in for a few weeks before locking. Never really had any issues.
That’s a beautiful guitar mate. I bought a Dean Dime and I’ve having a terrible time keeping it in tune- when I initially got it, it’d be out of tune after 10 minutes of playing. After months of pissing around with it I took it to a luthier to block the trem and set it up properly. Unfortunately it’s still going out of tune (and has intonation issues)! I took the nut blocks off which helped a little but still needs tuning after 30 minutes of playing. It’s pretty soul destroying because I absolutely love the guitar and want to play it every time I look at it. The Floyd on it is a special, in your opinion would it help the tuning issues if I replaced it for a Floyd original?
I purchased a Dean ML Select 7 two months ago. The only changes I made were to the pots, cap, and input jack. I put better electronics in it and had the pickups set up to do series/parallel with push/pull pots.
from what I know a Trembucker is basically only a version of a humbucker with slightly different spacing of the pole pieces because of the different string spacing on a floyd rose tremolo or tune o matic bridge. So with a tremolo guitar you basically have slightly different string spacing at the bridge so you need the right pickup to go with it. Hence the name trembucker I reckon.
Awesome review! Recently got a Second hand Dean select Z (inspection was last Oct so practically new) and loving it as well..Id say the honeymoon phase is over once a string breaks and you realize you have to learn to restring it haha.. Interesting with the locking nut...After I restring mine (first time doing that with a Floyd) it doesn't have an issue staying in tune much, but it seems to go sliiightly flat when I do big dives, and a light tug up will bring it back. Wondering if its a similar issue with the nut or I haven't tightened something properly. Adjusted the action a but from the bridge and it plays fantastic, easily my #1 guitar!
Thanks very much mate!! It's very strange how virtually every Floyd guitar has different issues even if its basically the same guitar from the same factory..
You have to stretch the strings as you tune them up ..if you pull up on them they will keep going out of tune...you just tune it to pitch and keep doing that until it doesn't go out of tune anymore ...once you do that you shouldn't have a problem with any floyds...that always worked for me
Seymour Duncan Custom TB-5 in the bridge is called the "Seymour Duncan Custom" its a dumb model name, but trembucker is just there for the string spacing measurements, hence TB-5 instead of SH-5 which has standard spacing. also i love the custom for modern metal, to add a bit of treble I run a Boss SD-1 Overdrive as a clean boost gain at 0, level full, and tone full. Keith Merrows old pickup comparison video shows a 1 to 1 with a whole range of Seymours and the custom just sounds fucking sick.
Make sure everything is completely tight as far as screws take all the pieces of the locking nut and then tighten the 2 Philip's head screws that keeps the bottom of the locking nut to the guitar so take a look and tighten those screws under the strings on the locking nut and grab a Philip's head and tighten both screws fully and check all other points of movement and make sure they're tight as well
Really nice video! Im in love with this guitar and it seems like a very good guitar. But the floyd issues makes me a bit sceptic wether i should get this guitar. I've seen other videos in which they pointed out some issues with the floyd. Im really curious if the ML 79 floyd korean made is better. Keep shredding!
I'd imagine the ML79 would have the same potential issues. I think unless it's the German Floyd Rose there's always a very good chance it won't be rock solid. Ngl I think I might upgrade on this guitar soon. The tuning issues aren't gig stoppingly bad, but a pain for recording. But think of it this way, this guitar with a German Floyd Rose would be just over £1000. New guitars with German Floyd Rose bridges cost over £2000 at least most of the time so buying this or an ML79 and upgrading the bridge is still worth it in my opinion.
have you checked if the strings are riding too high in the slots in the locking nut? given that you went up in gague and had no problem before, it might be that you just need to open up the slots a tiny tiny bit for the upper couple strings?
Greetings from California such beautiful 😍 guitar... You play brilliantly and you can tell by the smile on your face you love it .. I think I’ll order me one ...
My guitars are Les Paul and a Cordoba hybrid on standard tuning. Then I got my ML on 1/4 step down from standard, and a Jackson Pro Soloist on 1/2 step down. This way I just have to keep every guitar fine tuned and almost never change tunings. Floyds are a pain but I love them. restringing every year is another thing lol.
I ran into the same problem at first. You have to literally push down the string at the nut for all of them. Then you can lock it down and it will stay in tune. It's the stupid machine they use for the guitars at the head quarters. Something is alittle off and they need to figure that shit out already.
I know im probably late but im now just thinking about buying one, but on the locking tuners thing, did you yourself set it up when you changed string gauge or was it set up by a professional? (random employee in music store doesn't count) Because that might be your problem with the out of tune thing. I've never owned any floyd roses but i did some digging and most people tend to say the korean 1000 should hold tune well if set up by a professional, i own a much cheaper set of nuts and floyd style tremolo (i think its ibanez's own tremolo) and mine stays in tune pretty good, and it was set up by a professional. Now im not trying to sound degrading by saying this, but if you are a professional at setting up instruments then you are probably right.
Looking to get this exact guitar. I am based in Ireland and I can not purchase from Dean website, and they do not list suppliers or sellers in Ireland or Europe. Where did you purchase from?
I'm a beginner (4 months), and want to get a better guitar than I have. I'm stuck between a Dean ML Select or a Fender Telecaster Player series. I'm left handed, so options are limited.
I'd go for the Telecaster mate, especially as you're a beginner. Floyd Rose guitars if you're not used to them and don't have someone to show you how they work can be immensely frustrating
i had a dean cbfh ml. and what i had to do with that was put two metal shims under the nut. nd it cured the problem for me. they are about the thickness of a razor blade. unfortunately i had to sell it so i cant show youl. anyway could work for you. i cant remember where i got them from but just do a search for locking nut shims. good luck. nice guitar dont give up on it.
How can you love a guitar that wont stay in tune? Uck. You could try an adjustable trem stop. Or as ive noticed on my Dimeslime is when locking down the nut i have to push the strings inward and hold them while tightening because of the angle of the string pull. Its the Stealth Dimeslime so the headstock is much wider than even your model. Also ive installed a string retaining bar like youd find on a flat headstock. The guitar holds tune forever. If i go super nuts with the whammy it goes of a bit but nothing the fine tuners wont grab. Cheers
Have u come across any guitar with a whamny or Floyd that doesn't go out of tune ? It's a pity they require so much maintenance/professional assistance just to play
Loving mine, floyd rose hasnt gave me any issues, ive only changed the tuning 3 or 4 times in the last 2 months or so... honestly the main reason I got this was because it wasnt a signature model, but had that dime feel.
I picked one of these as well. And like you, I loved Dimes playing but didn’t want a tribute guitar.
There arent too much affordable Indonesian ML's with floyds out there instead of this one, but I live in Europe and Thomann isnt saying anything good about the guitar going back into stock soon bc of corona :(

Welcome to the "Joy" of Floyd roses, in tune one min out of tune the next, wiggle the bar and magically back in tune lol

Isn't that what the find tuners are for. Using A $300 guitar with license floyd . From 9s to 10s in it. Once its tuned it's tuned.
Watch out for the snake oil salesman
