    Nice Video, I flew the Otter many years ago. They have done a really good job on this version ( once the sounds get sorted out it will be very good). Good tips with the torque settings
    In reality we would only use flaps 40 for very short landings or if we wanted to make an early intersection, but it can be a bit of a handful in gusty conditions using full flap as there is a large pitch change when rounding out during the flare, we generally used 10 or 20 for most landings, these being on runways of 1500m +, the idea of the lower flap settings prevents you from having to drag the aircraft in therefore saving fuel and wear on the engines. It was a great aircraft to fly once you got used to the noise.

    Picked up the Twin Otter recently and found your tutorials very helpful. My first couple landings weren't easy but I'm starting to get the hang of it. Definitely requires a bit more work than some other planes for sure.

    Thanks for the video Luke. I had a first flight and found the descent quite tricky (basically a try and fail and try again) approach with the power and propellor settings. Did get down but the vid. Gives some great little tips.

      Awesome! It's always tough for the first few attempts and I was the same too (and still do a few mad things!) - always something to learn in the sim with these aircraft 🙂

    I'm impressed by the sound. They hydraulic pump keeping the accumulator full is a unique sound that brings back memories!
    Second edit: After the update, transition sounds are better, but beta sound now plays when at idle sometimes. Engine start sounds are ear-searingly loud for some reason. Authentic (I love the sound of a PT6 starting), but crazy loud.
    Edit: after a few hours in it, the engine and prop sounds are awful and don't transition realistically at all.

    Thanks for the tips, I was struggling with take-off and landing but your video helps me a lot. One of my mistake is using 10 flaps for take off and when it is very windy the plane swing left and right dangerously on the runway with the wings almost touching the ground some time. Not the kind of thing passengers would be happy about

    Great series. Thank you. Do you use TCA throttle quadrant and if so how have you set up the reverse thrust.

    • @BritishAvgeek
      @BritishAvgeek  2 роки тому +2

      Great to hear thanks! 🙂 I have a fairly basic Thrustmaster T Flight HOTAS X Full Flight kit currently (though looking to get something else soon). My reverse thrust is the same as the airliners for me - a rocker on the throttle to hold reverse armed then I use the throttle to engage it and change how much power I need

    • @CFOPG
      @CFOPG 2 роки тому

      The Aerosoft Twin Otter manual says to use "Decrease Thrust" for reverse (page 148). In MSFS, I opened "Decrease Thrust", clicked on START SCANNING and pulled back on both throttles from idle to reverse. It filled in JOYSTICK L-AXIS Y+ and this works for both engines. The other throttle axis might also work (JOYSTICK L-AXIS X+). I have the detents removed from both throttle axes, but I removed them before figuring out reverse, so I'm uncertain if detents have any effect on reverse. Good luck!

    • @barryflight1
      @barryflight1 2 роки тому

      @@CFOPG Thanks for the follow up. I sort of have them working much as you suggest. My new super dooper computer arrived today, which will give me realistic FMSM 2020 settings. As soon as I have it up and running I'll try those settings and let you know.

    • @barryflight1
      @barryflight1 2 роки тому

      After much experiment and several embarrassing crashes, using the TCA Side Stick and Quadrant as follows:
      Sidestick set Button 1 ( Trigger) to Toggle Reverse.
      Set Throttle slider to both propeller Axis 1 & 2 and reverse Axis. It shows Joystick Slider X.
      On the Quadrant Throttle Set Throttle Axis 1 Joystick L-Axis X and Throttle 2 to Joystick L Axis Y
      The engine start buttons work without modification. I set the lower buttons to left Toggle auto feathering and the right to toggle auto pilot.
      Method:
      In forward flight to engage reversers
      Throttle to idle Props (slider) to Full Down and press Button 1 to activate reversers and then use the reverse thrusters as in the Airbus.
      Don't for get to press key one to cancel reverses and to go forward.
      I hope this helps and if you can find a better way I'll be delighted to try it!

    I like to fly this model too (only in VR) and with the kodiak, there are 2 phenomenous planes around now!! ...but I struggle with the autopilot descent! Any hint for me? The climb is no problem...I can adjust the climbrate very smoothly, but descending I only know the variant to enter the desired hight and the push 1 time the down button, but therefore it hit 2000ft/min very quickly....so I have to take back the throttle immediately to not overshoot the speed-limits of this beauty....

    • @BritishAvgeek
      @BritishAvgeek  2 роки тому

      I've not noticed that being an issue myself though I know they're working on a bit juicy update for the twin otter - it might be that if this is a bug you have found it could be fixed. When it descends -2000fpm can you change it to less?

      If you beta-decent dont forget to set flaps. That's what I learned in the Turbo-Porter and thats what I do for any STOL.
      Unless it's just a towel you're landing on, don't set more than Flaps 30 with heavy loads or flaps 20 with light to medium ones.
      I usually land Props full and play with the throttle, flaps induce quiet alot of drag so easing it down is important in my opinion and to not overdo it. Just something between 70 to 80kts and as soon as you hit tarmac or dirt go full reverse throttle. Once you know how fast it stops you'll gain confidence and just send it.

      I checked the reflections in the Twin Otter. From the outside, we can clearly see the reflections of the windows, but from the inside, no reflections or scratches (with or without direct sunlight). Approaching at an angle about 2 inches from the gauges, I saw a faint reflection of the white numerals on their glass. And at night with all the cockpit lights on, you see NO glare in the cockpit windows. However, the photos in the DHC-6 manual, on pages 45 and 72, you can clearly see the reflections on the dials. So the DHC-6 has glass on its dials! Your observation is correct!
