Considering Vincent Price was openly BI, it's no wonder that he added so much flamboyant flare. He just ate this role up, he practically became Ratigan.
Well, he wasn't open given the time period. We only know he was bisexual because his daughter confirmed this. And she knew it because he told her for when she came out to him as a lesbian
@@badassbillyb I read somewhere that the reason why he lost his two first wives is because he came out to them, and the reason why his third wife didn't was because she was bi as well.
There is nothing gayer than a true nemesisship done right. It’s called a ship for a reason. All distinguished villains and their heroes are secretly at least bisexual. And just one step away from an enemies to lovers arc at all times. This is because TRUE, developed, hatred can only be possible for those that we once loved. Hatred doesn’t come from nothing. It is Taught. And it’s often Taught from people we would desperately Want to love had they any scrap of a willingness to stop harming themselves and those around them. People who Could have Easily become villains yet still choose to do what’s right are the most compelling heros often times. And often times villains who genuinely reflect on their actions and have character development to become better people, weather or not they stop being villains, make some of the best villains.
So true. Indeed, iconic villain-hero nemesis relationships for example, like Batman and the Joker follow this principle. Iconic nemesis are the two sides of the same coin. In this example, Batman being justice and order and Joker being chaos.
put stupidly, being obsessed with destroying another man (mouse) at any cost still means you're thinking about a man all the time lmao checkmate gottem
I’m just thinking of Megatron and Optimus prime honestly- In the words of my boyfriend “they’re soulmates, in the sense that they’re destined to kill eachother”
Those relationships would never work sadly. Ratigan got fed up with anti-rats slurs, Basil on the other hand got a bit tired of “my bf is actually tries to murder me” stuff.
I always thought the anti-rat insults were a representation of anti-irish xenophobia. The name Rattigan has irish roots, there is actually a few fanfics that explore this idea. I feel like if these two were in a proper and healthy relationship, then Basil would realise how hurtful it is and would fight tooth and nail for him. Too bad this is not a perfect world. 😔
Theory: Basil is aro/ace. He started “experimenting” with guys because he didn’t like women so he thought, “well if it’s not girls, then it MUST be guys”, which is how he met Ratigan. They later broke up, because Basil realized that romance just wasn’t for him, and well, Ratigan is evil haha. Edit: Look Ma, I’m famous.
As aroace myself I wholeheartedly agree and support this theory. Also due to the breakup Ratigan has nothing but hatred and loathing for Basil and kills anyone who mentions the time they spent as a couple.
I like to imagine Basil goes back to his place with his new roommate/biographer/daddy and next week theres another mystery and you bet your ass Ratigan is behind it once again. Ratigan went back to his wine barrel, annoyed that his "replace the queen with a robot" scheme was dashed by his ex...but more mad at himself for raging enough that he wrecked his best suit. He told his lackeys, however, that it was just destroyed when he fell off Big Ben again.

fun fact: Disney villains are actually gay on purpose due to the hays laws that made it so several things including lgbtq characters could only be in media if they were punished at the end. Sooo uh, basically the whole movie was just Basil moving on about his toxic relationship w his ex, and finding out a new lover to be gay to during the process? Did I read that right 🤔
@@Randomalistic Same, I was like: OHHH, I see what's going on here. Basil(Holmes' mouse counterpart) avoided a 'doomed yaoi' toxic relationship with Rattigan(Moriarity mouse counterpart(I'm forced, the Great criminal Mind is having me at gunpoint(/j, but yes, that is something he'll do), and Basil finds a healthy gay relationship on Dr Dawson. I'm sure I worded that right
Why are Basil and Dawson so cute at the end tho?? I was having a great time with gay Ratigan and then suddenly I have all this wholesome whiplash like what- The way they look into each other’s eyes in the end like omigosh
They're staring at each other, eyes interlocked for a minute, and it feels to them, time slowed down. Gosh, someone burn me, the thought of a fanfic is getting to my head rn
@@Randomalistic In my first time watching as a child, my brain was processing, and I accidentally called Dawson 'Watson',(Y'know, Dawson(YES, THE MOUSE DAWSON) is based on 'Dr. Watson'.) and I said: "I accidentally called Dawson 'Watson', so pls burn me at the stake" and I got weirded-out looks from my family.
I am starting to wonder if it is even possible to write an obsessive rivalry without romantic and/or sexual undertones, because so many have them and not in a super subtle way either.
I guess there's Dick Dastardly and that carrier pigeon. I never really understood why all the pilots on that airfield were so desperate to sabotage their chain of command, because it's not like they ever actually got sent out to do anything.
Those vibes made me realise these two are "bitter exes who gets competitive and one bites the dust" trope, similar with Batman and Joker, as this duo of hero and enemy did a perfect chemistry of that as a example.
The funny thing is that in the Italian version, the song played by the gramophone, is a love song! The lyrics are something like "Goodbye my love, I loved you passionately" XD
@@Randomalistic I am ashamed to say that I come back to this video way too often just to watch that one scene. Half- I'm a ratigan simp- But also, that's just super gay and the animation is nice.
I love how Basil and Ratigan have a shrine of each other in the dead centre of their room; Basil has a portrait of Ratigan on his fireplace, and Ratigan has a voodoo doll of Basil. Really shows their obsession with each other and how bitter their rivalry is.
3:30 I feel like a lot of Evil and Good guy duos do a lot of extra work for each other, like saying "Especially for you," Like wow, you spent all that time and effort just to defeat me... ;)
From my perspective, Ratigan (who loves no one but himself) manipulated Basil into having a tryst with him as part of one of his earlier schemes in the days before he firmly established his reputation as Mousedom's greatest menace. Basil in turn felt humiliated when Ratigan revealed to him that he'd only been using him the whole time. Ratigan may be gay, but he's the kind of character who would use sex only as a means to an end. This would add another layer to Basil's desire to avenge both his bruised ego and broken heart.
I had the exact same thought for their backstory and wrote a story for it called "The Professor's Portrait". It's on AO3 for anyone who is curious. No explicit slash however😅
Basil and Ratigan are bitter ex-boyfriends and nothing can convince me otherwise. Two brilliant and compatible minds, two polar opposite moral codes. That must've been the ugliest breakup in history.
Aw man, you didn't put the part in the end where after everything's said and done, Basil keeps Ratigan's bell on his mantle. XD This video had me giggling the whole time, I love it.
The Great Mouse Detectives was one of my absolute favorites. I had almost forgotten how magnificent Rattigan is 🤣 This video makes me love it even more!

2:36 this scene right here is just, perfect! 😂 like, I sware this had to have been done on purpose! Everyman EVERYMAN in the bar was fascinated with the dancers, but there Basil is, completely bored, and looking around else where. 🌈 he has 0 interest.
Sooo uh, basically the whole movie was just Basil moving on about his toxic relationship w his ex, and finding out a new lover to be gay to during the process?
Did I read that right 🤔
Yes you did
@@Randomalistic Same, I was like: OHHH, I see what's going on here. THEY’RE SO FRUITY LIKE CMON RATIGAN AND BASIL ADMIT UR HOMOSEXUAL FEELINGS FOR ONE ANOTHER.

Oh God as a Basil/Dawson shipper in WHATEVER way you want, I so loved this comment. The AO3 is full of Basil/Ratigan endgame and I'm like WHAT WHY
They're staring at each other, eyes interlocked for a minute, and it feels to them, time slowed down. Gosh, someone burn me, the thought of a fanfic is getting to my head rn
The last few minutes during 6:04 gave me “if I die, you die with me” kind of vibes

Ratigan and Basil have such a strong enemies-to-lovers-to-enemies relationship.
Those vibes made me realise these two are "bitter exes who gets competitive and one bites the dust" trope, similar with Batman and Joker, as this duo of hero and enemy did a perfect chemistry of that as a example.
It’s a lovely story abt a man(mouse) getting over his toxic ex boyfriend and finding a new healthy relationship in the process
The funny thing is that in the Italian version, the song played by the gramophone, is a love song!
The lyrics are something like "Goodbye my love, I loved you passionately" XD
That's amazing
