  • In this video we analyse the difference between two upgrades in different games, trying to narrow down what makes upgrades feel fun and engaging to use.

    FAQ/Corrections:
Q1) At the end of the day the upgrade with the most DPS will be picked, nothing else matters.
A1) I tend to agree with this statement and it’s something I do in games. But it still stands that the more interesting choices and paths to get to that high DPS the better the game will likely be. Also, with more interesting upgrades it may well be that the highest DPS might not be the best option if the upgrades are designed well, complementing the game mechanics.
Q2) Why did you pick precognition and not something else in Darktide?
A2) As I said in the video, it really highlighted an extreme example to compare and contrast to. But there are quite a few upgrades in Darktide that could have still worked because minor stat/dmg boosts work with what I talk about in this video.
Q3) Darktide had some major changes around the same time this video went up and likely will have more in the coming weeks, do you think this video is still valid?
A3) Yes for sure I think the video is still valid! Whatever the future looks like for Darktide and I hope it is a good one. You can’t ignore the lacklustre upgrades it launched with. And this video is talking generally about upgrades across all games, I just use Deep Rock Galactic and Darktide as I have recently put a lot of hours into them and have footage. I think my checklist is valid across most game upgrades. P.S. I actually put Precognition on one of my weapons and use it now because it does impact my gameplay in a noticeable way.
Q4) Cool looking and exotic upgrades are often actually trash compared to good stat boosts, I think games will be worse off with more exotic upgrades.
A4) This is a valid concern and one I should have addressed in the video most likely. I do try emphasise that it’s upgrade that impact gameplay, and I am implying they impact it in a positive way not a negative one. Impact on gameplay can be stat/DMG boosts as I mention in the video, the main point is impacting gameplay in a fun and engaging way. Some people, myself included can find flat damage boosts and crit chance engaging and fun because we can feel that power, other people might not.

Yeah, my eyes just glaze over when I see minor stat upgrades. A lot of games nowadays have these small numerical kicks when they barely do anything, it's just visual clutter at some point.

Fantastic analysis. Yeah. DRG overclocks are definitely engaging and feel chunky with how the weapons been be tuned so differently for different roles and effects. Great explainer

Eyup, he absolutely nails it: its a gacha game system, nothing more.
The thing I dont understand: even singelplayer games have started to employ these upgrade systems; but why?

blessings were just a way to add even more dumb rng into the game. If they worked like OC in DRG than that would mean the weapons on their own are good enough as is. Prior to the current patch some blessings literally boost the weapons into god tier (Brutal momentum on axes, Power cycler on PS etc), while most did barely anything.
Plasma guns and bolters are what i think the most well-balanced weapons ingame.

Vermintide 2 weapon traits were better, altho pretty much on every single melee weapon the best one is extra attack speed on a critical hit. It's not very big game chancing bonus, but when you hear that critical hit sound and your weapon starts swinging notocibly faster it feels pretty good. That's one of the problems in these type of games, Darktide could have cool weapon blessings that have interesting mechanics, but if the player base figures out Precognition is the objectively best one for the weapon, no one on the high levels will ever use anything else but that. Its a game about tackling the hardest possible challenge level where every minor boost is worth a lot.
Another thought i had was regarding Darktide's new skill tree, and it's minor nodes with flat health and toughness increases. I think that's bad for new players. Vermintide already had a problem like that, and it's unlockable skills are few but impactfull. A level 1 player has no ability to generate temporary hit points until the ly reach level 5, the most basic and core mechanic of the bloody game. Also I hate when extremely playstyle altering upgrades are gated at the end of an unlock tree, I mostly mean alterations to main class abilities. In Darktide they put them right after the grenades which I appreciate, but I think it should be even before that. The class ability is the core of your playstyle and the defining feature. There's a reason why I didn't enjoy trying out vermintide 1 despite wanting to see its maps and story, without class abilities the only difference between characters is just the weapons they can use, might as well only have 1 character then.
BTW have you played vermintide 2?

Warcraft 3 Reforged literally uninstalled your 20-year-old game.
I don't know, does burning a book "wreck" the story that is written in it?

Bit of a pointless title, if the element is so dysfunctional as to be called inherently bad then yes it will wreck the overall cohesion of the game no matter what. It may be less sensationalist for the number-chasing game, but the real question is "What makes a bad upgrade?" as you titled one of the later chapters. Personal pet peeve, I dislike this melodramatic titling style.

Respect for the title change, much preferred. I will re-iterate though it is only a personal pet peeve and understand a creator has to do what they have to do to get visibility on a platform like this. I hope however that honest and communicative titles like this updated one can perform just as well.

@@dopaminecloudit's really tough. Because I put so much effort into the research, planning and editing of my videos and so I don't want to lose potential viewers if they think the video will be boring because of the title.
But I decided to listen to you and thought the type of viewers who would respond to the old title would likely find the video boring anyway, and the viewers I want might get annoyed by it.
Watch this space and see what happens! Thanks for the constructive feedback, always take everything under advisement 😊
