- The Jones Act is a maritime law, passed in 1920, that has increased the cost of living, worsened poverty, and prolonged the recovery of Puerto Ricans from the devastating impact of Hurricanes Maria and Fiona.
The Jones Act, otherwise known as Section 27 of The Merchant Marine Act of 1920, requires all U.S. cargo transported by ship between U.S. ports to be carried on U.S.-flagged vessels built, owned, and operated by U.S. citizens.

SEC. 27 of the Merchant Marine Act: “That no merchandise shall be transported by water, or by land and water, on penalty of forfeiture thereof, between points in the United States, including Districts, Territories, and possessions thereof embraced within the coastwise laws, either directly or via a foreign port, or for any part of the transportation, in any other vessel than a vessel built in and documented under the laws of the United States and owned by persons who are citizens of the United States, or vessels to which the privilege of engaging in the coastwise trade is extended by sections 18 or 22 of this Act: Provided, That this section shall not apply to merchandise transported between points within the continental United States, excluding Alaska, over through routes heretofore or hereafter recognized by the Interstate Commerce Commission for which routes rate tariffs have been or shall hereafter be filed with said commission when such routes are in part over Canadian rail lines and their own or other connecting water facilities: Provided further, That this section shall not become effective upon the Yukon river until the Alaska Railroad shall be completed and the Shipping Board shall find that proper facilities will be furnished for transportation by persons citizens of the United States for properly handling the traffic.”

Puerto Rico needs to reunify with Spain. In 1898 Puerto Rico was richer than the Canary Islands and debt-free, had 16 congressmen and 2 senators from the Island in the Spanish Parliament., Puerto Rico was Spain's first autonomous province and had its own currency.

I would prefer that over statehood with the US, if those were the only two options, we would have more autonomy and we could keep our culture, we are more like Spain than the US, the US is a multicultural union, adding Puerto Rico will just cause more Non-Puerto Ricans with more buying power to buy up all the land and turn the island into Hawaii 2.0. But still I prefer Independence, the Spain reunification movement is very very small, they don't even have their own political party, its just people meeting in small zoom meetings and Facebook group chats. And there hasn't been any big push in Spain to take back Puerto Rico. Plus Spain has been going through some economic problems and with how they treat Independence supporters like in Catalonia, it will be 1948 gag laws all over again but with Spain in control.

Why has the Puerto Rican government been complacent?
The government and just about all the politicians in Puerto Rico are in Kahoot. They are making money by selling just about everything on the island. A majority of them are corrupt and do not care what happens to Puerto Rico! Wake up and start doing something about it like not selling your land! Look at Hawaii! It's coming to Peurto Rico! Yes 🙌🏻 just that. Please request from your senator that the US abolish or AMMEND the jones act due to the unequal impacts to places like Alaska, Puerto Rico, and Hawaii.
As for statehood…Puerto Rico is divided about that issue. But we believe they should have the right to determine their future, whether that is statehood, independence, or to stay a commonwealth. But as of today, the power lies with congress to decide…unfortunately.
Since you don't understand what the Jones Act is meant to do, it would be better to make an exemption for PR.
After seeing how few people were willing to do the leg work after the hurricane, independence would mean another Haiti.
Puerto Rico is such an amazing place. I'm glad it's part of the US but I am saddened by how it, and its people, are treated as not fully part of the US. The disparities in hurricane relief, particularly after Maria, is appalling. I support repealing the Jones Act.

Jones act is drowning Puerto Rico there’s more to it than that look at the politics and the way they run the island I was born and raised there lived there for 19 years. Takes one all almost all day to get a drivers license I figured by now they would’ve fixed it fast forward, watch some of these programs on UA-cam. It still hasn’t changed.

Ships going from US port to US port having to be built in the US and be US flagged and US crewed is a great idea, especially with today’s geopolitics. I mean, China already owns a scary amount of us ports. Imagine if now we chinese ships running around our waters instead of us ships. Not to mention, in times of crisis, mariners play a key role in transporting military personnel and equipment overseas.
Another perspective I would like to point out. The Jones Act secures the critical movement of goods within the US. Without this law, foreign-owned companies could influence the flow of domestic goods and resources, threatening thousands of American jobs throughout our shipbuilding and maritime workforces, and foreign governments could gain even more undue leverage over our economy (especially with countries like china or russia). Also since we’re talking about the economy here, do you realize how much of a impact taking away the jones act would do the maritime industry and the us economy?? The us maritime industry employs over 650,000 thousand Americans and contributes $150 billion to our economy.

Rico has the capacity to be an independent and prosperous island but only if they wanted.

@@dougkalagian in the short term this would be a small boon. That would be until trade changes and less ships would visit(it does often). While the jones act is not perfect it does guarantee trade. Pushing to amend rather than remove might be a better tactic. Removing it would be shooting oneself in the foot much like the removal of rosey roads.

Puerto Rico should go Independent. Once Puerto Rico is its own nation we can do whatever we want with trade in the world. If we become a state, the Jones Act will be on Puerto Rico forever. It is very unlikely this will be taken down, the US doesn't want to lose billions. And if Puerto Rico somehow got an exception to be taken off the Jones Act, Hawaiians and Alaskans would be pissed.
In researching this video, we listened to talks with Maritime/law professionals who say that The Jones Act needs to be updated to address these disproportionate effects on Hawaii, Alaska, and PR. So hopefully, whatever law comes next will try to resolve all the issues and not just for puerto rico
The issue is that the US isn't letting us go independent, we've been fucked over WAY too hard plus the blatant corruption from our government.
You have the solution or at least try to solve the problem. Go to the island and vote PIP or any of the leftist parties, so, there is not connection with the USA and no American citizenship, according to the. congress. Statehood gives us power in the US Congress for many things, not just the Jones Act situation. All independent countries of the world are one way, or another ran by America or one of the other 4 world powers like China, Russia, EU, or Britain... They lobby the crap out of any political party or politician no matter what part of the the world they're in. Two days ago I was speaking the married Dominican couple who own and operate a restaurant in NYC... I told them, I hear there's a lot of gold and other natural resources in DR, and they told me ... "Yes there is, and all of it owned by the US, and Canada!"

So many countries play both sides for their own benefit. Reality is much more complicated than merely everything being divided up between major powers. Yes they have undue influence, but as an independent country we’re not just completely at the whims of one like we are now.

Millions have crossed the dangerous water of "La Mona" trying to get from our neighboring Dominican Republic to PR with other ppl from other islands in cheap made wooden boats.

The Jones Act could have been a factor immediately after WW2 when there were thousands of cheap cargo ships floating around. But the cost of operating a vessel nowadays is quite similar to US Flag vessels and Foreign Flag vessels. More than 13 foreign vessels visit San Juan Port every week bringing all sorts of products from all over the World. Difference in prices between products sold in the mainland US and the same products sold in Puertro Rico is not significant. The key to more economical shipping rates is big volume and not adding more ships, US or Foreign to the equation. A container ship capable of carrying 1,000 containers between Jacksonville and San Juan is cheaper to operate than 10 ships carrying 100 containers each under a foreign flag.

I am a living stadistic. I worked for many years in the shipping industry, I belonged to the PR Manufacturer's Assoc. , the Chamber of Commerce and the US Coast Guard Comitee. Plus I have tons of years as a consumer both in San Juan and in Miami.

Lets use a 15.5 oz can of Goya Small Red Beans as an example and lets assume it comes from Goya Distribution Center in Miami. That can, together with thousands of other cans in carton boxes is loaded into a container and transported by truck or train to the port of Fort Lauderdale. There is loaded into a container ship with more than a thousand other containers and moved by water to San Juan on an American flag ship. All that is done under a freight tariff that is filed with the FMC. The tariff includes the truck movement, port fees, stevedoring fees, insurance and other charges even before the container is loaded into the ship. If this were a foreign chinese ship, up to now the charges are the same. Then the ship loads fuel , maintenence parts, buys insurance and hires a crew of about 21 sailors. Up to now, the fuel, maintenance, insurance and depreciation of the vessel are exactly the same for both the chinese and the american ship. The american 21 member crew earns about twice the chinese crew but that cost is diluted quite well between the 1,000 plus containers and thousands of Goya cans. Then all those charges are repeated in San Juan under the same costs all the way to the supermarket. Now, if you add three or four more shipping companies to the equation now the anmerican vessel does not carry the 1,000 plus containers and costs increase proportional to the decrease in cargo volume. Since there is already an aproved tariff for the shipping of Goya beans between Fort Lauderdale and San Juan, the chinese shipping company will use that same tariff. Of course the can of Goya beans price in San Juan will reflect a few cents increase to account for the freight but it is not a lot considering how many beans were transported in a particular vessel.
