I didn't like No Rain, but my boyfriend at the time got me to listen to there other music, they are one of my favorites, Change is my favorite song, and I hate he died so young..
Alex M Perhaps I should have done some fact checking before I posted it. I always thought he was a junkie and this song was about being addicted. Maybe I read my own things into the lyrics. .Sorry It's been years.
I have to disagree. Not because I don't think they would deserve it, but because despite all of the fantastic music they made, most people couldn't get past 'No Rain'. Shame, really. Huge talent, the whole band.
I didn't truly understand their genius and soul until just recently...my ignorance. They are the most underrated band in history and would be legendary had Shannon lived.
I remember when Shannon died, it was the very early days of the internet, before any social media. Fans were leaving tributes and memorials on website comment sections and chat rooms, and my friend in high school printed out pages of it for some reason -- in the school library, since none of us had printers or internet connections at home yet. I still have those pages in a binder with all of the notes we passed and other high school memories.
This is such a bittersweet song, it has me grinning like a fool and bawling like an idiot. One of life's greatest humans and one of life's most tragic stories. A beautiful soul who was taken WAAAAY WAAAAY too soon from those close family who loved him, and the extended millions of family who loved his music and his soul. RIP Shannon, we wish you were still with us.
Angela Howard At age 45 I have seen many of my favorite musician's pass away. Somehow I did manage to survive the 1990's. Sucks to see such talent gone.

This song saved my life 7 years ago when I was done with everything. I had never heard it but seen it in my suggestions. I don't remember the song I was listening too but i left it to listen to this and it has been my theme song and go to song ever since. My therapist now uses it with other PTSD patients she has. I don't feel the sun's comin' out today It's stayin' in, it's gonna find another way, yeah As I sit here in this misery I don't think I'll ever know, Lord See the sun from here And oh, as I fade away They'll all look at me and say And they'll say, "Hey, look at him" "I'll never live that way" And that's ok, they're just afraid to change When you feel life ain't worth living You've got to stand up Take a look around, look up way to the sky, hell yeah And when your deepest thoughts are broken Keep on dreamin' boy, 'cause when you stop dreamin' it's time to die And as we all play parts of tomorrow, Lord no Some ways we'll work, and other ways we'll play, yeah But I know we can't all stay here forever So I'm gonna write my words on the face of today And then they'll paint it And oh, as I fade away They'll all look at me and say They'll say, "Hey look at him" "And where he is these days?" When life is hard, you have to change When life is hard, you have to change, mmm

@Millennial Smark he is literally just talking about voice alone? Kurt just doesn’t belong there. Your story just sounds like a dumb assumption based on little experience with those people
For someone who you can see as plain as day cared about people and who lost himself to drugs, I'd have to imagine he'd be incredibly happy to see the comments here and how many people this song helped out of that pit.
I have been an addict since I was 12, when shannon died, I shot a bag of dope for him, when Kurt died, I shot a bag of dope for him. Now seeing how sick I was, being clean, almost overdosing, the ambulance found me wirh a needle in my arm and a crackstem in my pocket, I guess that bag was meant for me. But I'm clean now, God graced me another one of a thousand chances, and now I have these 2 babies to care for. We miss you Shannon. I live a little bit of every day, for you and all of us who have fallen to this insidious disease.
I fucking loved this comment.. I love both Shannon and Kurt. I also live little for them everyday but about andrew wood and layne staley ? Did you forget them ?? Whatsoever, but i'm so glad to know about your existence..
Steven Geere no I did not forget them, but I would be naming names forever, but for some reason, I was in my teens when they passed, and I was SEVERELY IN THE GRIPS of my addiction when they passed. When I got older, I learned better coping skills, THANK GOD. I always thought it was luck in my teens, but now I know it was grace that let me keep going. Thank you for your comment, it made me smile!!
Today is going to be the first Christmas without my dad. He had passed away 9 months due to many health complications before I had to wake up to him gone in his bed. He introduced me to this song while going to my 3rd grade football practices, he called it my “warmup song”. We listened to “change” and “no rain” predominately. That man was my leader, my role model, the man that taught me what a real man is. As I get older I come to understand the hardships he had gone through throughout his life and it really drives me to be who I am. No matter how down I may get, or how heavy my life may feel, it all leads me back to where I am now, listening to Change..
Perhaps the deepest song ever written in the entire galaxies and solar system its a shame the song is so underrated straight from the heart.. ''Keep on dreaming cause when you stop dreaming is time to die'' How true is that?? R.I.P Shannon Hoon your always missed and remembered dearly by all your fans from around the world.

@@brucebrandy9433 hey I like them , saw them in Tuscaloosa , with the Melvin's, & Meat Puppets, met them after the show ( I had gotten too hot and I could smell other people in my personal space so I went and laid out on the lawn by the sidewalk to stop the dizzy ) my friends were friends with the guys from Blind Melon( same hometown , not Indiana , some of them would come over and play around in the band room when they were in town visiting) .. that being said .. I think the only reason people wouldn't like this song is that it's not song but the dusted /painted gold... it's seems that those who do ... seem to after that they're not here anymore. That's my theory anyway ( Cranberries, Zombie... well when Bad Wolves, did their version .. Mother Pearl Janis Joplin was done in gold too I'm sure .. ) 🤨🤔..
Stick this on the Isolation 2020 Playlist, and right near the top. Incredible song from one of the world's most underrated bands of all time. Magic and beauty rolled into music.
If there's a such thing as magic in my life it's that music finds me when it's supposed to, and I found this song today because of a short video made by a youth center. I didn't discover it 30 years ago before Shannon died. No, I discovered it today, and today is the day I was meant to hear it. And what can I say except that I'm so incredibly grateful for the gift of this music in my life.
I swear, Blind Melon's music has kept me alive ....I have had so many dark periods in my life. Music is the only thing keeping me going sometimes. I've played this song a coupke times today....I just hope that if there's an afterlife, my bro is out there with Shannon creating new stuff for us to enjoy
Condolences on the passing of your mom :( It was really sweet of you to play such a beautiful and meaningful song for her. What a precious moment you created there
Plastic Tree Your story is so close to mine. I listened to this every day at the hospice as my grandmother (who raised me for many years and was closer to me than my Mum) succumbed to a brain tumor. I think I understand a little bit of how powerful this song is to you, and the kind of emotion it can offer - both grief and comfort. I'm sorry for your loss.
My brother wrote these words to me in a letter when he was in boot camp and I was just about to graduate high school…I never in a million years would’ve imagined I’d feel these words as deeply as I do now, 23 years ago when read them in that letter. RIP to those I’ve loved and lost.
in rehab i went out of state to fl and a kid from my state nj who I totally clicked with, said something to the same effect; if you would’ve told me, I’d be a heroin addict two years ago there’s no way in hell I would’ve believed you. and he was the sweetest kid, smart as hell as many addicts are, and if he was in a room full of harvard students you wouldn’t be able to pick him out. addiction is a disease. people who are ignorant about it will say things like stop for me or the kids and it’s like if they don’t stop for their own life they’re not stopping for you that’s not how it works I’m sorry about your brother.

I had this album when it came out. 25 yrs later I understand it more. As a teen I could tell the songs were good but it took time and growth to understand how good they truly were.
So true , I spent time listening to songs I grew up on , what a difference time makes .change and awareness is there in the songs , truth , we have to just listen and be awake
They had just released their 2nd album when he died. Hadn't really gotten started good before that shit happened. They weren't underrated to us back then. We had tickets to that show in New Orleans. Was a shitty evening.
Absolutely incredible and I love everyone's comments...Jesus... I'm embarrassed to say that I had forgotten about this band....I happened upon a pizza place at ASU and they were playing this song! So many beautiful artists we have lost along the way!!!...Shannon being one of the best!!! I remember singing this song 30 years ago.... like it was yesterday I can't believe 30 years have passed... This song encaptures the trials and tribulations we all experience through life....Shannon you are sorely missed!
I love this band to extremes! Soup basically defined my childhood, my brother was the one to introduce me to this band (back in 1991 or 1992?) and I am so very grateful he did! I seriously wish Shannon hadn't been taken so young, but the good ones always do! It sucks because you just don't hear good music like this anymore...this song reminds me to always keep my mind open and positive.
God what an amazing band, I miss them very much ,it brings me back so many memories when I was a teenager in my 15 I was in my living room batteling depression, hearing this band ,hearing this song over and over,I'm originally from Argentina I been in USA for 20 year and I still enjoying and listening this amazing day ,one of the greatest thing's in my country is that we respect rock!!!,we honor, respect and still supporting this rock band's , this is true art ,real people's playing real instruments, my respect Blind Melon ,you guy's should be at the rock hall of fame, definitely...
The version of CHANGE compared to the version on the ALBUM are just so different vocally. For singers trying to CHANGE their vocals and are using CHANGE as a template to reach the highest tones/notes, this song and the original BLIND MELON album are the very best I have ever found for doing so. SING INWARDS with your words and let them reverb out is advised/secret key!!

What made Shannon Hoon so great? This guy laid his soul out for all to see. That's a scary thing, people can exploit that, especially today, but the fact that he did this makes him soooo enduring and easily relatable for those fortunate enough to discover him and pick up what he was putting down.
I live near Lafayette, Indiana where Shannon grew up and is buried. I went to visit him last winter. You can feel his presence at his grave site. In that moment, standing 6 foot from one of the most profound artists I've ever known, I felt the love and joy he gave us all. Just standing next to his final resting place and seeing it first hand gave me a better understanding that life is fragile and is not to be taken for granted. That moment has helped me to love deeper and laugh harder. R.I.P. Shannon. Thank you
I visited in late summer and loved how flowers were growing all over his grave, making it a bit noticeable on this otherwise regular cemetery. So many insects were buzzing around, it was lovely and peaceful.
Still years and years go by and I have never heard another band like them. I have been a Melon fan since day 1 and even kept track of the new projects. I still feel this band has no equal I miss their music.
Shannon, Chris, Brad, Rogers and Glenn, you guys made such a difference in my life, and later with Travis. Once a melonhead, always a melonhead. Thank you for the music and the amazing friends.
This song always makes me cry. I didnt search for it. I can play it on guitar. It was just recommended. And weirdly my rehab starts in two days. Lucky for UA-cam to remind me of blind melon again.
I would have loved to hear this man sing live. I wasn't born when he was preforming, so I never had the possibility of hearing him sing. We need more music like this.
He was on his way here in Fl I was so excited to see him , found out the day before he was to play he left us It was devastating still think about that day I heard the news
The most talented people are also a little crazy, this man was both and couldn't deal with things so he turned to drugs, don't be sad he's gone be happy that his talent is still remembered and he left some good music for us to enjoy
It took Dave Mustaine 15 rehabs to work. 17 rehabs didn't help Layne. I don't know if they didn't have the after support they needed or what. It's crazy sad.
+raisedfist80 well i am sorry to tell you you but you said is not true either. you say "we humans" "all" are self-deestructive, that is an incorrect statement. not all humans or we humans but we living in a certain type of society, system whatever you want to call it. humans are not self destructive or fight with themselves by nature, it is an aberration through the interaction with inhumane and unnatural circumstances, rules, modes of living, upbringing etc. which cause such behaviour and mentality.
I picked up my guitar and started playing with some chords and subconsciously started playing this song. I have never played it before and I didn't even know how to. It sounded familiar, but I couldn't remember who did it. This song was haunting me as I played and it finally clicked that it was this song. Weird and totally out of the blue. It was a sign and a checkpoint in my life. Thank you.
Smart words, when life is hard u have to change. I wish he'd listened to himself but God needed him more than we did I guess. Another beautiful song bird
This album got me thru a very dark time in my life when it came out and yet here I am again all these years later reaching out to it again for comfort !!!!
Wow, what a song. I must have missed these guys back in the when as I was a die hard thrasher. These days in my 50's I am finding more and more cool stuff that I would never have listened to when I was in my early 20's. I am still a massive Slayer fan and that will never change, but this was awesome.
This is the first Blind Melon song I ever heard. They were introduced to me about 15 years ago by a friend who just passed away. This song and so many of his others have so much meaning and depth!
Finally breaking free from a bad marriage. Finally have the strength to do it. I know it’s what’s best but damn it’s hard. I come back to this song when things are really tough. When life is hard you have to change…
They took a portion of these lyrics "I know we can't all stay here forever so I want to write my words on the face of today and they'll paint it" and inscribed it on Shannon Hoon's gravestone. It's always been my favorite Blind Melon track and one of my favorite songs of all time.
Shannon was larger than life. The brightest stars burn out the fastest. Hard to believe he’s been gone longer now than he was alive. I will always listen to your music Shannon. I love you ❤
I don't feel the suns comin' out today It's staying in, it's gonna find another way As I sit here in this misery I don't think I'll ever no ?? I can guarantee this individual was enlightened on the state of living and still doubted. Everyone does. The nature of man is to search out knowledge even when life is now a real thing being tempted by a omen of more pain. Is it unnecessary suffering or a new beginning. "If you survive..."
This song saved my life. Listening to it during the hardest time of my life, it spoke to me in a way no song ever has. Music is the only thing in life that can do that so perfectly.
Struggling with alcohol addiction and my dads always listen to classic rock and this song and others have made me relive the good times and has helped me so much
I wish this version was on the album. Just that line "and I don't want to die." adds such an impact to this song especially given the circumstances. RIP
I ran into S. Hoon at a ian moore show in Dallas back in 93 or 94. He was in the audience, the guy standing next to me said hey look Blind Melon's singer. Sure enough. He was pretty trashed, haha.
He llorado muchas veces con ésta magica canción!
Aretha, Jackson, Wonder, James Brown, Joplin, Plant and many MANY more that are able to take over your soul musically and vocally without your consent. livisdaddy2008 Anddddd there's the spell check. Good job being "that guy".
My comment was already a self-admitted failure. Anything else?
who agrees that if blind melon was still around they would be in the rock and roll hall of fame
I have to disagree. Not because I don't think they would deserve it, but because despite all of the fantastic music they made, most people couldn't get past 'No Rain'. Shame, really. Huge talent, the whole band.
they deserve to be but sadly they didn't really get the recognition they deserve.. :/
+wwaldo2525 I don't think hr means anything wrong with No Rain it's just one of the only songs that most people know by Blind Melon
I didn't truly understand their genius and soul until just recently...my ignorance. They are the most underrated band in history and would be legendary had Shannon lived.
harambe lives me but the music is not rock it's grunge
I remember when Shannon died, it was the very early days of the internet, before any social media. Fans were leaving tributes and memorials on website comment sections and chat rooms, and my friend in high school printed out pages of it for some reason -- in the school library, since none of us had printers or internet connections at home yet. I still have those pages in a binder with all of the notes we passed and other high school memories.
You should think about reposting those.
I live not far from his resting place in Dayton, Indiana. I live in the his hometown Lafayette.
I've been to his grave site in Dayton, Indiana. There's a great big black stone laid over his grave and people still leave teddy bears on it.
What a loss such a great talent... you left way too may God bless you and your family 🙏
I saw them in September 1995 in Offenbach Germany
This song is perfection, the lyrics, guitar, and Shannon’s voice. Rest easy Shannon 💔
Auditory GOLD!!!

March 17, 2005 is my clean and sober date! ~ worth the struggles to maintain.
Shannon would be proud of all the love shown in the comment section here. It brought a smile to my face and tears to go with it.

Ditto.
Angela Howard At age 45 I have seen many of my favorite musician's pass away. Somehow I did manage to survive the 1990's. Sucks to see such talent gone.
Love.
No band in the 90s ever tapped into the folk rock sound of the 60s and 70s like Blind Melon.

Tesla, anyone? Listen to them unplugged. Same level. To me, anyway. Both are underrated bands in the grand scheme. Just saying. AIC is another.

Nearly 10 million views and I can still safely say that Blind Melon is the most-under rated and under-appreciated rock band of all time.
They are my favorite of all time. Now my son plays their music 🎼❤️
And it's not even close.
Totally wholeheartedly agree 👍
About 5 million if them views are my family listening to it in the car
@maddiewebb3646 Yes... and isn't Change one of the most poignant songs ever?
absolutely the most amazing singer since Robert Plant. this is not hyperbole. Shannon Hoon was one of the best. RIP brother. Your words touched gen X.
I agree
I'll be the thousandth person to say that this song has power. Music can help heal. If you are open to it. I play it whenever I feel bad enough about myself to need it. Thank you Shannon. Well done.
Day 6 of sobriety and this songs brings tears of sadness & joy at the same time. Beautiful... My heart goes out to anyone affected by addiction inside or out.

How goes the journey so far? Keep on, keeping on. "One Day At A Time" peace prosperity health and happiness to you.
Damn, so tragic to lose this dude. Blind Melon deserved way more recognition than they got.
They were a very popular band. I saw them in concert.
This song saved my life 7 years ago when I was done with everything. I had never heard it but seen it in my suggestions. I don't remember the song I was listening too but i left it to listen to this and it has been my theme song and go to song ever since. My therapist now uses it with other PTSD patients she has. Thank you Blind Melon they have no idea how much they have done for me and not ro mention as i read these commets countless others. They will live forever.
Same here
@Judy Musselman - Wow, what testimony to the power of this song. Sending much Aloha.
Thank you for sharing Judy. You deserve to be happy!
I don't understand how this song can only have 10 million views! Very underrated
"But I know we all can't stay here forever" that line always gets to me.
And it's so true
And when he adds ,"and right now I don't wanna die..." Gets me every time.
Came here to say the same thing
Not " here" , but .. somewhere ., just not " there",...
I don't feel the sun's comin' out today
It's stayin' in, it's gonna find another way, yeah
As I sit here in this misery
I don't think I'll ever know, Lord
See the sun from here
And oh, as I fade away
They'll all look at me and say
And they'll say, "Hey, look at him"
"I'll never live that way"
And that's ok, they're just afraid to change
When you feel life ain't worth living
You've got to stand up
Take a look around, look up way to the sky, hell yeah
And when your deepest thoughts are broken
Keep on dreamin' boy, 'cause when you stop dreamin' it's time to die
And as we all play parts of tomorrow, Lord no
Some ways we'll work, and other ways we'll play, yeah
But I know we can't all stay here forever
So I'm gonna write my words on the face of today
And then they'll paint it
And oh, as I fade away
They'll all look at me and say
They'll say, "Hey look at him"
"And where he is these days?"
When life is hard, you have to change
When life is hard, you have to change, mmm
RIP

What an epic voice....wow. Shannon Hoon, Chris Cornell, Eddie Vedder, Layne Staley. All with epic voices. Eddie's the only one left.
@Millennial Smark no Kurt was a good musician, but his voice definitely wasn’t on the same level as those guys
Steven Geere thought the same, tho different people relate to different artists. Music is an intensely intimate thing.
SMITTENKITTEN glittergirl ur ded
Lee S no he graced me with free will, sadly, I made the wrong choice.
Perhaps the deepest song ever written in the entire galaxies and solar system

Blind Melon has a wonderful 60s flair to their image and music. I can't help comparing Shannon's voice to Janis Joplin.
Damn your kind of right about the Joplin thing I always thought he was like a softer version of Axel Rose from GnR
Yeah! I hear it too. ❤️
My exact thought, a male version of Janis

Mother Pearl Janis Joplin was done in gold too I'm sure .. ) 🤨🤔..

Plastic Tree your comment gave me goosebumps c:
Wuauuuu! Todo tiene su espacio y su tiempo! Me imagino lo que debes sentir al leer esas palabras! Bendiciones 🙏
in rehab i went out of state to fl and a kid from my state nj who I totally clicked with, said something to the same effect; if you would’ve told me, I’d be a heroin addict two years ago there’s no way in hell I would’ve believed you. and he was the sweetest kid, smart as hell as many addicts are, and if he was in a room full of harvard students you wouldn’t be able to pick him out. addiction is a disease. people who are ignorant about it will say things like stop for me or the kids and it’s like if they don’t stop for their own life they’re not stopping for you that’s not how it works I’m sorry about your brother.
i think that was his way of saying i lost myself to this demon and idk how to be free again

An absolute 90's masterpiece. I still listen to this song just about every day. My favorite alternative song of all time.

In that moment, standing 6 foot from one of the most profound artists I've ever known, I felt the love and joy he gave us all.
This is on the most amazing songs ever written... It's up there with Let It Be and Comfortably Numb...
Blind Melon is the most underrated band OF ALL TIME. I'm not usually one to make such an absolute statement but it absolutely applies here.

Struggling with alcohol addiction and my dads always listen to classic rock and this song and others have made me relive the good times and has helped me so much
30 years later and this song hits more than ever.

@@duncan3998 the album was released in 1992, its now 2022....
@@jessiejamesferruolo I was referring to the video...
@@duncan3998 Hmm. Well I said "this song" so.... yea.... Nice to meet you?
@@jessiejamesferruolo I literally said ''the video'' that was released in 1993 of this song. but nevermind.
Hard to believe that Shannon would be 56 this year. I can only imagine what greatness he would have given the world if we didn't lose him so early.
I wish this version was on the album. Just that line "and I don't want to die." adds such an impact to this song especially given the circumstances. RIP
I love Nirvana, but Blind Melon's music spoke to me on a far more personal level....
+lot24 very personal
Shannon's voice was amazing. I didn't give two shits about Cobain. Shannon was beautiful, when he wasn't fucked up.
I ran into S. Hoon at a ian moore show in Dallas back in 93 or 94. He was in the audience, the guy standing next to me said hey look Blind Melon's singer. Sure enough. He was pretty trashed, haha.
+Tammy Sigmon Shannon did though. He was very upset when he heard Kurt was dead. I think they both were great.
+lot24 I think their music showed more talent than nirvana, personally. Hoon's songwriting was just amazing
He llorado muchas veces con ésta magica canción!
Aretha, Jackson, Wonder, James Brown, Joplin, Plant and many MANY more that are able to take over your soul musically and vocally without your consent. Shannon completely shatters souls pouring out their emotions that they had no clue about. He is BY FAR in that top 10 soul shatterers. For some reason people don't want to recognize that or speak up about it but I definitely will.
