Headbands are not just decorative; they serve a function. They were originally used to allow you to pull a book out of a shelf using your finger without grabbing onto the spine cover and risking damaging the spine. However, it's important to note that you should never pull your books out this way.
Book binders Apprentice here! You explained the process of handbinding incredibly well. I probably won't follow it (cause, why if I have all the machinery to make it) but I am still impressed!
Nice work. You did a good job giving all of the relevant steps without becoming tedious or repetitive. I'll definitely use this video when I make a journal.
A really good video; clear instructions; no unnecessary repetitions. Beautiful filming. Your storytelling makes it look doable for some who really isn’t that skilled as you! Nice the personal touch at the end.
Wow, the amount of work in that is immense! I was expecting all the bound pages to be pressed together and then put in a huge machine to cut the edges perfectly square. But i like the fact that it probably looks properly hand made, because it didn't go through that process. I have a whole new appreciation for the work that goes into binding books now!
Thanks for watching! I have trimmed the edges in some other books I’ve made (just by using a utility knife against the straightedge) but I like the handmade look as well!
Thank you. I enjoyed this video, and you answered a question for me, as to how much extra to add to the dimensions of the book board as compared to the text block. You also gave a good explanation of adding the end papers. And I enjoyed the end footage of your Dad's enjoying his book!
I’m currently working on a re-cover for a softcover art book of the artwork from Skyrim using the method you have described so eloquently. Thanks this is some really good content.
This is the most amazing video I have ever seen, thank you so much. I'm just trying to get into bookbinding and this was so clear and amazing. Good job, this is fabulous.
this tutorial is so helpful thank you so much! the 3d printed lettering is so smart and i will definitely be harassing my partner to print something similar for me lol
This was such an amazing tutorial!! Tha k you so much! Ive been really getting into book binding/making and this really helped clear up all the questions I had!:)
The 3D printed embossing looks great! If you can, refer me to a resource on how to emboss books by hand or make a video about it. I’ve always wanted to take a crack at it because I’ve always wanted to make a bunch of art books that look really fantasy spell book in my own style with carved stone and bronze pieces.
What an excellent video! What an excellent son! What an excellent present! And it's all because you had a Father that cared, didn't abandon the family like 50% of them do now; a Dad that loved his kids and they felt that love and attention etc. Good example of how it could be, yet most people I've known in my 72 years expected the kids to figure it out themselves, had no role models and felt like they were an unplanned burden! I envy you. I'm certain you will succeed in anything you undertake in life. Thanks for doing this. I'm doing a similar project for my 72 year old "lady friend". She has a lifetime of excellent poems, from the time she was 8 up until her mother died a year ago. 86 pages of poetry. I typed them all into PhotoShop on various background pictures that suit the theme of the poem. Have 4 pages on a regular 8.5 x 11 folded paper and will do the stitching and finishing but only using " Craft Paper", cardboard and leatherette for the spine and 1/4 of the rear part of the covers. Hope it turns out. I already screwed up my first attempt. She found a half dozen typos so that had to be redone, and my spacing between the spine and the thin hardboard on each side was not wide enough. An 1/8" was just too little. Will allow a 1/4" this time around. Also my glue wrinkled the nice Craft Paper I glued on the boards. Proper glue coverage and using it sparsely is the key. Decided to use some vinyl covered paper for the inside pieces that connect the stack of pages to the inside cover. Push that vinyl connecting sheet right down that groove. Also I'm going to cover the nice decorative "Craft Paper" that I glued on the hard cover with "Mac-Tack" clear plastic sheet normally used for covering cupboard shelves etc. I'll wait a week though and make sure all the glue has cured. Thanks for the video.
Wow Morely! I've been away for a bit. Your channel has blown up! Congratulations on your hard work! Loved seeing the process of the book! I have to go back and catch up on the previous I've missed.
That came out great! Love seeing his reaction at the end. Have you considered a curved needle for stitching the text block? I've found it makes it a little easer when you start stitching all those signatures to one another.
This is incredibly helpful! I plan to make a full hard-cover version of the Wizard's Companion from Ni No Kuni with this method. It's a much larger book but I think I can do it.
What happens if at the last part when adding the book block to the cover, it's too tight? I messed up and I'm making a gift and I don't know what to do. I can't start over
THIS IS IT!!! This is THE perfect tutorial I needed! Now just need to figure out me measurements! Thank you for sharing, and I have one question. Did you leave the 3D printed red letters between the board and the leather? I assume so, since it was glued.
The term "signature" originates from the historical practice of marking a folded sheet with a symbol or letter to indicate the correct order for assembly. In traditional bookbinding, this method helps ensure that pages are in the right sequence when the book is bound. Signatures are important for maintaining the integrity and organization of printed materials, especially in larger publications like books and magazines.
Since I view you as an expert in 3D Printing and DIY in general, could you tell me if creating enamel pins is possible/feasible? Not the cheap plastic, but some really nice, (metal?) pins ^^
Very informative and helpful video! I'll use it a ton when I try to complete the ridiculously big task of giving my whole library leather covers! Just one question.. Where can I get book boards or something else usable? I couldn't find anything, it'd be great if you could help me :)
@@MorleyKert great thank you! I'll look if I find something in my country! Your video made me really excited about my project again and I think it might be actually doable! Thanks for that!
I'd love to see you rebind a bible like this, but with round folded over corners instead of the cut corners like this book has. I've seen people who rebind bibles use multiple pieces of leather and then they'll cut a slit for the spine but never really go into detail like you do.
Good job however you cut the cover board too broad. While measuring the over hang also minus the space you want to leave between the spine and the cover board.
Here I am looking up random videos on how to make books because I have a new hobby HOW DID I MISS MY FAVORITE UA-camR MAKING A BOOK!!??!?

Why are the groups of pages called signatures?

if i have bookboard can I use it instead of what you used in this situation?
Definitely! Even better
Is not necessary to glue the text block to the spine?
Open up a hardcover book and you’ll notice that the spine isn’t attached to the text block.
Great dad and great son. (-;
Looks great, but you skip super important parts. Like what do you do with the glue that leaks or comes out after you press the book.
Is there machine that are doing this ?
Didn't you measure the distance between the first hardcover to the end of the leather?
Awesome
