- In this leathercraft video, I design and create custom leather book cover. The cover is made from natural vegetable tanned leather that has been highly decorated using a combination of tooling, dyes, stitching and hardware. A custom leather cover is a terrific way to spruce up and protect any hard cover book in your collection. I hope you enjoy this leathercraft video and get inspired.

Sizing Tips:
For books with thin cover pages (less than 2mm thick), try 1/4” (6.3mm) leather overhang at all edges. Place stitch lines 1/8” (3.1mm) from outside edges.
For books with thicker cover pages (greater than 2mm thick), try 3/8” (9.5mm) leather overhang at all edges. Place stitch lines 1/8” (3.1mm) from outside edges.

OLD Leather Smith here, A BEAUTIFUL Work, Excellent, easy 2 follow, I never learned how 2 use an air brush, I use a Blush Brush of course I am OLD SCHOOL. Excellent Video. GOD'S BLESSINGS ✝️⚾🙃

idk if anyone else tries to replicate this - but it is 10000X easier keeping the leather wet the whole time, i dont have strength so getting those stamps was a beast then I re-wet it and boop! so if you see the dark in the video, keep it dark or somehow keep it super wet. Also, I cant find that diamond stamp anywhere, but will be re-doing and re-watching this tutorial until I get it! love your work!

However, I think it's leave the rivets off. That book is meant to be carried with you and consulted OFTEN, making the rivets an obstacle. Insane being a traveler (whether by choice or not) she puking that out of your satchel, hoping it doesn't damage any of the bare essentials you're carrying. Distracting, even jarring thought, right?

One of the most beautiful pieces I've seen you create so far. Question for you... How do you handle the dye on the inside of the cover, and it rubbing off on the book? I've created book covers plenty of times, and I've never been able to leave the inside not-line with something like pig suede, etc., because no matter what I do (burnish the inside with Tokonole for example) I always end up with some dye rubbing off on the books.
Thank you very much! I try to use just a light coat of dye on the inside. As far as whether or not it rubs off onto the book remains to be seen. This is really the first book cover I have made like this. So we shall see.

I'd definitely keep an eye on the spots that might not have gotten much Tokonole, as it might break down and disappear a little faster, leaving a spot just waiting to rub off onto the inside of your book. Either way, that is some absolutely phenomenal work!

I'm still learning, but wouldn't adding the mink oil before doing the carving be better? Because from my understanding, you want to soften leather so it's easier to carve designs into.
You should case the leather with water. That is what softens it for carving.
