I'm speechless! At last a Joni Mitchell reaction! She hit you where it counts, the heart and mind. Joni is legend, one of the most authentic and unique singer/songwriters to come out of the 1960s/70s. Her lyrical poetry is usually paired with her guitar and piano work. On this track and from the same album, "All I Want", Joni is playing an instrument called the dulcimer. When the "beat" drops, that guitar is being played by her then beau, James Taylor (Fire and Rain, You've Got a Friend). Joni also wrote the hippie anthem for Woodstock, covered by several rock legends.
Joni Mitchell, Canada's gift to the world....you're welcome
Thank you.
Thank you, Saskatoon!
Don't forget k. d. lang and Gordon Lightfoot.
Thank you, thank you
"Just before our love got lost you said
"I am as constant as the Northern Star"
and I said "Constantly in the darkness,
where's that at?
If you want me I'll be in the bar". The most soul baring/brutal lines. If you can understand/feel her lyrics/music you will know what it means to be a woman - a woman in love and a woman alone.
Fantastic lyrics that woman came out with!
"Someone told me there's a girl out there with love in her eyes and flowers in her hair." That line is for Joni it's from Going to California from Led Zeppelin
Thanks for sharing
Did not know that! True?
"Big Yellow Taxi" and "Help Me" should be considered, as well. Joni's very talented.
I love help me I remember myom playing that song all the time.
My two faves of hers.
"Very talented"?! She's a freakin' freak of nature - so much talent and creativity it's mind-boggling.
"Free Man in Paris," "Both Sides Now," "River," "Car on the Hill,"...the list goes on.
One of the great albums of all time. From this album, listen to "River", "California", "All I Want" and "Carey" - They are all classics.
Marley Bob Really good list!
'This Flight Tonight' is my favorite, so much going on.
She a genius level artist....singer songwriter, guitar player and awesome Painter as well. A true Artist!!
I am a lonely painter.
I live in a box of paints.

BEATLE LEVEL
Joni was incredibly influential as a guitarist and songwriter from the late 60's onward. She invented lots of new ways to tune the guitar for different songs. She wrote the song Woodstock which was a big hit for Crosby, Stills, & Nash. She did lots of styles. She even painted lots of her own album covers.
Check out her songs:
Both Sides Now
Big Yellow Taxi
Chelsea Morning
Free Man in Paris
Turbulent Indigo
Majoofi where is she from? TY
I'll never get over the fact that Joni wrote "Both Sides Now" in her 20's, wisdom beyond her years, and then that haunting version three decades later which is a lifetime, brilliant masterpiece of a song.
@@chelsealeonardbaum23 She's from Alberta, Canada.
Saskatoon, Saskatchewan.
Try “River” from this same album. Makes ya cry, it’s so sad and beautiful at the same time. 🙏
One of my favorite Joni Mitchell songs.
Absolutely outstanding!
The whole blue album is phenomenal.
Great if he puts together a Christmas reaction video!
Yep. Both of those songs always get me.
this is big league stuff. Joni has seen me through my life.
Listen to the whole album. This came out in the heady days when artists were creating albums as a complete experience. Those of us who grew up with this music are blessed.
After hearing this song, I've just realised who influenced Sarah McLachlan, an artist I love to listen to. I'm definitely going to check out more Joni Mitchell! ❤😍
Oh, I hope you've come to love Joni too!
She is my favorite singer and "Blue" is my favorite album. Being a soprano, I always tried to learn how to sing her songs. Of course, I couldn't touch her, but it was still fun trying.
One of the great side-benefits of her magical voice is that nobody ever dared cover any of her songs (apart from kdlang and Care of You, but that's fair) because she is so unique. So the world was spared the likes of Adele trying to do Carey. James Taylor covered River, but he's canon, so that's allowed. Also he knows not to do a Joni on the song. As if.
@@AlanHope2013 Actually, Judy Collins, who is a folk singer of renown, did a great job of Michael From Mountains.
@@freckled100 @Alan Hope
And, Judy Collins recorded a great cover version hit of “BOTH SIDES NOW” :)
@@AlanHope2013 @freckled100 “Written by Joni Mitchell, 'Both Sides Now' was first recorded by Judy Collins' for her 1967 album 'Wildflowers' and went on to become a Top 10 hit.”
Jay, as a Canadian, nothing makes my heart swell with pride like Joni’s angelic voice.
Please react to one of her first masterpieces, and one of the greatest songs ever written, Both Sides Now.
Keep up the great work.
Love from The Six.
I totally agree Flash!
My mom sang me to sleep with that one and Circle Game, and we cleaned the house to For the Roses.
Seconding that from your immediate west in The Hammer...
The legendary, iconic folk singer Joni Mitchell gets few covers to “A Case of You” due to the complexity of the vocal she sings so effortlessly. Try out a reaction to her 1966 classic, “Both Sides Now.”
This album tells a single story. Every track is a different chapter. One of my favorites.
"All I want" from the same album is another amazing song. This entire album is incredible though.
LeezPgh I need to listen to it. Spotify here I come
Coyote, Amelia, The Jungle LIne, Dreamland, All I Want, Car on a Hill, Let the Wind Carry Me, River, Harry's House/Centerpiece.... so many great songs
She plays that dulcimer bro.
Beautiful ain't it?
Joni Mitchell is the queen goddess. Her lyrics, guitar tunings, and overall artistry are impeccable. She’s a genuine treasure.
"Both Sides Now"
Been listening to Joni for more than 40 years, and she still takes my breath away.
One. Of. The. Best. Ever. Singer/songwriters all over the world look up to her.
Beware, this rabbit hole runs very deep.
Thanks for liking Joni ,p.s. that’s not a guitar it’s called an Appalachian dulcimer .
She's an amazing artist who has done a variety of styles throughout her career.
Joni is one of the most unique musical talents you'll find. Incredible lyrics, incredible voice, and utterly authentic artistic expression.
SO THIS IS THE ONE I TOLD YOU GIVES ME COMPLETE GOOSEBUMPS NO MATTER WHAT SHE DOES JAY!!! LOL :) SHE'S BEEN MY FAVE FEMALE SINGER BY FARRRRR FOR ALMOST 40 YEARS NOW SO! MELODIC, RHYTHMIC, POWERFUL, SUBTLE, YOU NAME IT JAY! ;-) WRITES, DIRECTS, COMPOSES, PLAYS GUITAR, PIANO, AND SHE A LONELY PAINTER SHE LIVES IN A BOX OF PAINTS.
Her voice always manages to bring me to tears.
It fills my heart that you are so open and love these artists. I love watching you experience these songs of my youth. Bravo to you.
Best album ever. She doesn't just play and sing. She has different tuning, weird chords, and is self taught. She's very unique and a genius, independant, and the most intelligent woman I've ever heard. One of our Canadian genius! 🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦❤️❤️ Welcome to Joni. Can't believe you've never heard. That Blue album... I've had it for over 40 years. It is a prize possession!! 'California' .. on same album. I do listen to it, often. Welcome. Glad u appreciate hearing her.
Her lyrics were and still are amazing. So prolific as a writer. No one, except Dylan touches her.
Just the line “ I could drink a case of you and still be on my feet”. Brilliant.
That’s a dulcimer she’s playing. It sits on the lap. I used to get mesmerized watching her play with such grace.
I was so touched to watch someone new to Joni. It made me cry. She is my favorite artist, but I’m old. 😂. Joni is revolutionary as she never stayed safe and stuck with her old style, she changes over decades. She did jazz, check out her Mingus album. You made me happy watching your pure reaction to sublime Joni Mitchell. Blue is absolutely her best but she is radical. Do watch her interviews. She is a true artist.
I'm def a joni head like that bruh / check "hissing of the summer lawns" album
She's been moving me away for 50 years. I would love to hear this for the first time. This got me close.
One of my favorites. She is brilliant. Helped us all put feelings into words coming out of the silent generation..
Very pretty song and she has the voice for it. She is a great song writer. The hard core Joni Mitchell fans will suggest a lot of different songs, and they are no doubt worth listening to, but if you want to hear the Joni Mitchell song that every music fan who grew up during the classic rock era has heard a thousand times and really loves (even if they couldn't tell you who sings it), then listen to "Help Me".
Joni is a legend. This is one of the many beautiful pieces she came up with. You should also hear her later work where her voice changed dramatically.
Joni Mitchell’s voice is so intimate..
listen to “they paved Paradise, put up a parking lot..”
Big Yellow Taxi...
She sings the way we all feel, The depth and then the deepest way we all feel. And then the heighest way, the most forgiving and patient. She sings the human.
Her album 'Blue' is considered to be one of the best albums of all time. This is my favorite track on it. Very good choice, man.
I'd recommend checking out this live performance of 'Coyote' from the Last Waltz concert in 1976: ua-cam.com/video/f7MbmXklj3Q/v-deo.html
I love the Last Waltz version too. But the studio version has Jaco on the bass.
Love your reaction to the great Joni! We are truly blessed, aren't we? BTW she does play guitar and piano, but I think she's playing a dulcimer on this one.
She is tops the best. Miles Davis wrote a whole album about hsr. Her special chords are coveted by so many greats
I found Joni's first album a few months after I got back from Vietnam in "69, I have been in love ever since.
Just do free man in Paris or help me
Court & Spark ☝️😁🥂🎯
One of the most beautiful voices of the 60s and 70s, check out “River” and “Both Sides Now”
Joni Mitchell is an icon and a proliffic writer. She sings, songwriter, plays piano, guitar and dulcimer on her songs. She is a fabulous artist as well. Blue is a great song of hers if you are looking for another to react to.
I believe Rolling Stone magazine, entertainment magazine was quoted as saying this album was the 4th biggest selling album of the Rock era, bigger than the Beatles and Rolling Stones albums. Joni was a monster in this business and it is easy to see why, guitar, piano, dulcimer and writing and singing all these songs with a voice nobody could believe. Yes, you have stumbled upon something very special with this lady.
my absolute favorite female artist. Check out the song Cold Blue Steel and Sweet Fire.
"For the Roses" is my favorite Joni album, she had such an incredible string of albums.
How nice to see another new generation of people discover Joni Mitchell. Watch out people, she is a deep deep that may take you years to get out of.
Joni Mitchell is a goddess of talent, her songs, her voice, her art, her brilliant music
Joni is such an incredible artist who cannot be limited by time or genre. She is a poet, painter, player and soulful singer. As mentioned here she is playing a dulcimer and James Taylor is the acoustic guitar in the background... he played a few times on this Blue album. They were a couple for a little while in this time period. This song is a Joni masterpiece.
You have great taste. Joni Mitchell along with Bob Dylan are arguably the greatest
American songwriters in last fifty years. You would do well to order this CD, please react to Joni Mitchell live studio 1970 "Woodstock" and "For Free'. Also her later work "Magdalene Laundries" live. What has been robbed from music by our secular corporative culture is what we all love in these songs: Romanticism. You have struck gold here.
Joni Mitchell's "California", "Carey", "River", and "Blue"--all from the album BLUE. If you want to listen to a compilation of some her greatest songs sung live, I recommend her album MILES OF ISLES.
She was playing a dulcimer. It's a four stringed Asian instrument that sits on your lap. She's yet another of our Canadian treasures, whose influence is still being felt both musically, and in the boxes of paint.
Listening to Joni is like giving your soul a hug
Guitar, yes. Piano, yes, she plays piano. Well. But what you were hearing from the start was an instrument called a dulcimer.
And, yes, her voice is narcotic.
And yes, she writes her own songs, and the lyrics are poetry.
And, no, she will not disappoint you. So happy you have found her.
My album picks:
Blue. For The Roses.
The Hissing Of Summer Lawns.
Joni Mitchell- circle game + river + big yellow taxi
you have a great appreciation of lyrical content. Not only is Joni Mitchell one of the all time great singer songwriters of the 70s, she was an amazing writer of lyrics that take time to digest. Check out some of her lyrics after you react to more of her songs.playing real good for free , Chelsea morning, Carey, Paved Paradise,
You are so right ! I am of the opinion that she should have earned the Nobel price when Dyland got it a few years ago. Not that Dyland is not a great song wriiter, but Joni's music is fantastic, her lyrics are sublime and she knew how to sing. The perfect, perfect artist. She sure deserves a Nobel price for her entire work as a song writer.
Try listening to the whole "Blue" album. She was my favorite singer-songwriter of my youth. An angelic voice wrapped in utterly beautiful poetry
Joni's voice was so clear and sweet, something that I miss in today's singers. I have loved her from the beginning of her career. LOVE your reaction!!
I can’t listen to this song and not cry, it touches my soul
She's playing a dulcimer in this song. A musical wonder, she is and my musical drug for almost fifty years. Thank you for sharing Joni with the world.
Joni Mitchell... to me the greatest singer-songwriter of the 20th/21st century! Go to through her transformations during her 40 years career!
She is by far one of the greatest talents. Listen to her album - The Hissing of Summer Lawns - and all the others. Night Ride Home, Hejira, Turbulent Indigo, Chalk Marks In A Rainstorm, Don Juan's Reckless Daughter, etc. They are all phenomenal - someday she will get the attention she so deserves!
One of the true geniuses of pop music of her generation. Talent that can not be oversold.
She has so many A grade songs the mainstream just haven't really heard. URGE FOR GOING / MARCIE / BLUE / COME IN FROM THE COLD / SONG TO A SEAGULL / DOWN TO YOU Etc. I could write another 25- 30 songs but you get the point. All A grade and each very unique and distinct from each other.
She's playing a dulcimer, sometimes referred to as a mud harp. Yes, she is special. Thanks for reacting. Reminds me of my first reaction to the LP.
I am jealous of you having the chance to hear this astonishing song for the FIRST time. It is 50 years since I first heard it and was in raptures about it. I have passed it on to a very select few that meant a great deal in my life.
Yes, Joni plays the guitar and the piano, but here she is playing the Mountain Hammered Dulcimer, with James Taylor playing acoustic guitar. The entire album Blue is a masterpiece, the #3 all-time great album according to Rolling Stone.
So I’m a 72 year old guy who first heard Joni Mitchell back in the 60’s. I fell in love like thousands of others and now I am feeling like an emotional vampire as I watch Jayvee have his first encounter with Joni. She has you now my man and you are powerless to resist.
One of the greatest musicians of the twentieth century! She has a discography you could stretch across the country. All fantastic!
It's James Taylor on accoustic guitar. She's playing Appalachian dulcimer. She was the singer most folk singers of the time aspired to emulate, especially Emmylou Harris. One of the best singers out of Canada and covered by KD Lang.
The acoustic guitar on this track is played by James Taylor, whilst Joni plays the 'scratchy' dulcimer.
Do it ...... That whole album Blue is gorgeous. Joni was on the cover of Time magazine in the early 70. No one could get enough of her. She still gives me chills.
This is a dulcimer, and she's playing it. She knows a whole lot of instruments, and is great at all of them.
The album Blue, that this is from is beautiful. 🙏🏽✊🏽
Wow..havent heard this in sooooo long!! Next do River! So glad to see you enjoy this💞💞💞💞
She was playing the dulcimer. But she is an excellent guitarist too. And a talented pianist... I got to see here live once. She amazes me... And I really like your reactions. You are honest and have an open mind.
If you want to know one of the sounds that encapsulates 1971, listen to California, Carey, My Old Man (who was Graham Nash of Crosby, Stills and Nash), and All I Want. If you listen to those songs, you'll be "there"!💓
Joni Mitchell is a canadian musician that Jimmy Page and Robert Plant esteemed so greatly they dedicated "going to california" to her talents.
Love Joni ! Every hippie guy's crush when we were young and so talented in every way. Favorites of mine include "Free Man in Paris" &"My Secret Place " (Peter Gabriel, vocals). Tasty choices you are coming up with- so glad I subscribed!
No one has mentioned one of my (other) all time faves, He Played Real Good For Free. I love the live version off the Miles of Aisles album.
Prince was a great fan of hers. He did a cover of this song; one with the guitar and one with the piano. The first time I heard her sing was back in the day when FM radio DJ's would play songs or entire albums upon request. Her voice hit me the way it hit you. I have all of her albums, and it's one big journey, indeed.
Prince was a great admirer of Joni, and does a cover of this song that is out of this world
My favorite is Free Man in Paris.
Probably the greatest stream-of-consciousness songwriter there's ever been, and (as is evident early in this song) she's one of ours (Canadians, that is; I'm Canadian). Her best known song is likely "Big Yellow Taxi" which has been covered by just about everyone, but other notable songs by Joni are "Help Me" and "Free Man In Paris". My favourite by her is "River", sad but lovely...
Loved this Jay! I had the exact same reaction when I first heard her when I was young. Her voice/music is like a spiritual experience. So honest, intimate, vulnerable. Thanks for sharing this!
Don't know how I missed this. You are so sincere in your response to people.
Wrote and arranged all her music. The range, yodeling....
Perfect.
she's a self-taught guitar player, dulcimer player, and also plays a lot of piano, lyrics, composing, self-produced, artist who painted many album covers/liner graphics
There is only ONE reaction to Joni ...pure awe!!
Joni is a master of her art, a musical genius.
One of the best songwriters of all time. If you want to learn about life, about love, it is Joni.
Joni Mitchell so beautiful with voice so glad to hear her here love you Do more
Delicate, hauntingly beautiful, humane and tragic. Her song River is like this also.
Check out her most haunting and ethereal song called 'Songs to Aging Children Come'. It's played by an actress in the funeral scene of the movie, 'Alice's Restaurant', with Arlo Guthrie.
Joni is amazing. She has a pure natural voice and didn’t rely on voice modifiers that are used today
Stephen Stills wrote a song about her balled "Our House". Crosby Stills & Nash sang that song.
Even 50 years later tears come to his eyes about her breaking up with him.
Oh and check out “Coyote” and “Amelia”. She played with bass guitarists
Joni deserved more credit as a guitar player. Her playing shows best, I think, on her album Hejira. And her awesome voice has never been matched. A good song to listen to of her's is Sweet Bird.
I would recommend Joni all day long! My girlfriends and I used to sing her song Twisted, and we had it down!! This brings back such good memories! Some of her most memorable songs are Big Yellow Taxi, Woodstock, Help Me, and Raised on Robbery.
I’m so excited to watch this!!!! I love this song! My favorite by Joni
