    I still get goosebumps remembering seeing that black plastic for the first time.. and after that the Wellington. Weren’t the 60’s incredible..

    Friend, you have to put a transparent lacquer on the entire surface of the model, preferably acrylic, to allow better adhesion of the decals. After 24 hours, you put another layer of transparent lacquer, this time with a matte finish, and this way you will protect the decals.

    • @MrWhiteScaleModels

      Hello mate, yes I used a gloss varnish before and after applying the decals then a matt varnish at the end but was quite surprised when the decals still had the silvering effect. I think maybe next time I will look for an aftermarket set of decals. Thank you for your comment 👍 and thanks for the advice.

    i'm not a modeller, no patience and a lack of talent for it, ive bought the odd ones but theyve always turned out average at best, i prefer the diecast ones like corgi's aviation archive series, but if i did buy one to really test my patience on and try to do a good job, but never to this level, it would be a Lancaster, the reason being i live only about a mile away from the old Avro factory in Chadderton, have done all my life, so its an aircraft that holds a special place for me.

    "I'm not really happy with this", he says of a build that's light-years ahead of anything I ever managed...
    I always thought the turrets were supposed to go in as you closed the fuselage, so that they could sit in a groove and rotate.

    • @MrWhiteScaleModels
      @MrWhiteScaleModels  6 місяців тому

      The main thing was the decals i was unhappy with, I still think about those and how disappointed I was......I'm a bit like that. Few areas maybe didn't show on camera but I thought could of turned out better.
      The turrets are meant to be held in place by a couple of parts but mine kept falling out. They sit in the correct place with the fuselage closed up but I superglued them as I was wither gonna break or lose them.

    Don't beat yourself up about colour. It is very subjective and the pictures we have to go on have suffered all sorts of degredation over time. Even colours that have been preserved on original aircraft in 'unweathered' areas will have degraded because of their chemical composition. Also there were (and still are) variations between batches of colours to the same spec. Finally, how colours are captured and presented digitally can be variable too. So all in all, please yourself. I've tried all sorts for this RAF scheme and I'm not one for saying this is right and that's wrong but of all the aircraft done in this scheme, I've found Vallejo Model Air paints to be most pleasing to my eye despite prefering to use Tamiya paints. I'm currently trying to make the perfect ocean grey with that bluey tint which I know is a function of the photographs but one which I like to look at. Not having much luck though; either too blue or too monochrome. All good fun though.
    As for the model, yes, the Lancs drag on a bit and I have to have something else on the go at the same time. I also found that the waterslide transfers were poor no matter how much gloss coat and setting solution I used and it spolit it somewhat.
    I used some vinyl camo masks on the last one I did which were excellent and saved an evening. Mig stretchy rigging for the aerials. I'll be buying some after market transfers next time.
    I think you've got the antenna on the wrong way round; the instructions are wrong. The bulbous fairing part should be against the fuselage, but it's an easy fix.

    • @MrWhiteScaleModels
      @MrWhiteScaleModels  6 місяців тому +1

      Yes good point, I did come across a few photos of the same plane which looked a slightly different shade. But like you say alot of things can play a part in that - age, digital photo etc.
      Agreed 👍 some fun to be had mixing the paints, I was actually stood in the model shop holding the dark earth for 10 minutes wondering do I buy it or keep mixing.
      I'll give those Vallejo Model Air paints a go at some point, I've never used them before. I like the Ocean grey, a nice colour with that blue tint, I mixed some for the Spitfire I did but the result was maybe a bit too blue also.
      That did come to mind when finishing this model, I'd of liked to have another build on the go which I'll probably do next time and switch between the 2.
      Yes I'm still thinking about those decals 😁 if I'd of known I would of looked into some aftermarket but know for next time. I'm currently on with my next build (Airfix) and when putting a few of the decals on the inside it felt great having no issues. With the ones from this build still on my mind I had a bit of decalphobia I think.
      Thanks for the advice 👍 I appreciate it and good luck with mixing the Ocean grey I'm sure your result will be spot on in the near future.

      Hi there, it's something I wish I had done looked for a third party decal set but it wasn't until these decals had dried (overnight) I noticed the cloudy look. I should really of done a little more research into the original set and asked people who had built this kit.
      To be honest I complain about the masking but do quite enjoy it 😁 although I've never tried the paint pens I'll give them a shot at some point in future.
      Couple of areas I think if I'd of took my time a bit more I could of improved but overall apart from the decals I was happy enough with the outcome.
      Oh yes I know what you mean, when I started modelling it was because I noticed a decent kit for 15 quid and thought 'that's a cheap enough hobby, I'll start modelling'......down the line after buying all the things required I got a bit of a shock. That's one of my downfalls, I'll start a kit then realise into the build I'm out of Nato Black or thinners etc and have to keep going out to grab things. I could be a little more organised that's something I'm going to try and improve on.
      I wish you good luck with your builds mate 👍 thank you for the comment and watching the video.

    Very nice job. I've built this kit, and really enjoyed it. Regarding the cloudiness (or silvering) of the clear areas on the decals, it looks like you may have been just a little timid with the gloss coat prior to decaling (it appeared to have a slight orange peel to the finish, which would create tiny air pockets beneath the decals, creating that silvery look). The key is not the shine of the clear coat, but rather the smoothness. I hope you don't mind a little friendly advice. Model on!

      I used superglue in most places and sometimes scratched a bit paint off where the parts would join together and used regular cement (if enough space to do this without it being visible).

    Hi there! Nice build! I just got this kit last week, so your video is really helpful. About the decals: Applying a light clear gloss coat helps with decals, but you may not want to do that. And for the heavier Revell decals and alike, maybe try a stronger setting solution from Daco or Humbrol. You can also try using hotter water. New sub and FB follower! 😀
