Full Build | Revell Avro Lancaster B.MkI/III - 1/72 Scale Plastic Model Kit | Review

- The Avro Lancaster became the iconic British Heavy Bomber of the second world war, in part due to it's large bomb capacity and good performance. These two factors made it suitable for a number of unique, difficult and high-profile operations during that conflict.
Derived from the earlier and unsuccessful Manchester medium bomber, the Lancaster went on to perform with distinction during the war, whilst also finding it's way into a number of different roles including maritime, reconnaissance, cargo transport and civilian use. Finally though, it was replaced by an updated derivative of the aircraft known as the Avro Lincoln in the mid 1950's.
Join me in this video as I build and review the Avro Lancaster B MkI/III plastic model kit in 1/72 scale from Revell.
The model and diorama took about 3 weeks to build, the video took a full day to edit and upload too! So this is a big one!
This first part features the build of the Lancaster, whilst the second part will cover the build of the diorama including the creation of the base, painting the figures & scratch building the scaffold.

No music? You, sir, are a gift from heaven and it is a joy watching you work.
:D
I remeber I was on holiday (6 years old) and the sunroof of our car was out. Heard the massive noise of the engines, and there it was. I shit myself with excitement still one of my favourite planes.
sounds awesome!
Idk if anyone else agrees with me that one of the best Lancaster I’ve seen for a while well done matt 👌🏻🍺
Thanks!
Yes I agree cool looking lanc!!!
For those of you wondering what an Avro Manchester is, it's a Lancaster but with only two engines. It had a very short production run, and was retired from service in 1942 as the Lancaster was an all round far better aircraft.
Great review; looks like a fantastic kit and you finished it superbly. What a great model.
Thanks!
And the avro Liverpool is the same as the Lancaster, but on bricks and missing it's wheels.
@@vasili1207 Surely you mean Avro Everton,,,,
I remember a story of a pair of mechanics watching the first Lancaster their squadron had, on approach. One grumbled 'Another Manchester!' His mate said 'Uh the Manchester has /two/ engines..' May be apocryphal but still funny :)
The Manchester had 4 engines 2 in each cowling . The Vulture was 2 Peregrine engines coupled . The Peregrine engine was troublesome ( powered the Whirlwind ) but coupling them caused even more problems . Rolls Royce abandoned these engines , just not worth the trouble , when the Merlin was becoming increasingly better . Interestingly The Heinkel 177 was a similar idea to the Manchester ; using DB601s ; but the Germans persisted with it ; despite the problems of cooling etc. when adding 4 engines probably would have led to a successful aircraft .
I have this in my stash, i have all the tools and a fine detail airbrush but this shows you can get really good results with just a paint brush.😊
Thanks! Yes, even us non-airbrushers should be able to get some nice builds done
I remember buying one of these with my paper round money when I was about 12... needless to say it turned out nonwhere this good... fingerprints everywhere and an unpainted interior. Great work on this one!
Sounds like you had fun though
My first Lanc (from Airfix) i built with the outer engines on the wrong wings. A Revell Lanc I got as a present nearly a decade(?) ago as a present but I got disheartened painting inside the undercarriage nacelles and getting topsides of wings camouflaged and stopped building it.
You have done a cracking job there Matt, it looks brilliant! Loving these recent build uploads, keep them coming 😀
Glad you like them!
Not only are your builds incredible but I learn something from your videos too! Thanks!
Glad you like them!
My first Diorama I build as a kiD was the Revell lancaster Dam Buster G for George with "Secret Bomb" that kit was a late 70's kit and thus to today's standard quite rudimentary.
I took a shelf out of my dresser and covered it with coloured sawdust and some plaster of Paris as tarmac. Then I added the Airfix RAF figures and the RAF Airfield Rescue and Ambulance models. as well as the Airfix refuelling set. I was so proud. :D Thanks for the trip down memory lane!
Sounds like a fun memory!
@@ModelMinutes It is Lad. ;)
It looks absolutely amazing, especially since you used the brush. Wish I had your skill level! Hoping to see another awesome build soon!
Thank you so much 😀
Another great video! Just purchased Avro Lancaster dam-busters edition, can’t wait until I can build it!
Hope you enjoy it! Thanks for watching!
Circuit _444 sounds great 😁
That turned out much nicer than I thought it would I must admit.
After all this time I am finally getting the hang of an airbrush and I'd be brave enough (now) to give some exhaust staining with it over the upper wings.
You can do it! Thanks for watching :D
That is amazing Matt, one of your best builds! I have seen a Lancaster once in my life at the IWM in Duxford so this video brings back good memories!
Glad you liked it!
I’ve been waiting for this!
Yay!
Great build - always love a Lancaster, and your results are very nice. I noticed the same thing with the rear turret falling out when I built mine - makes you realise just how exposed those guys were back there, with the turret more 'stuck on' than being an integral part of the aircraft.
Yeah, not sure it's a job I would have enjoyed
Fantastic video, great build, looks epic Matt!
Thanks a ton!
great build and dio , watched it last night very enjoyable well done
Glad you enjoyed it
Great to watch a build of these without using a air brush. Not all us Modelers have these so this is a great video to watch.
Glad it was helpful!
Very good build and good quality. I was brought up on a Lancaster bomber base in hemswell,in 1947.my dad was a tail end gunner, during the war.
fascinating!
Brush work really brought back memories. Love the deep flat finish of the acrylic paints.
thanks :D
The one good thing out this new lockdown is more uploads from Matt ! Now you can get on with making that stash smaller
Haha! maybe . .
Awesome Lancaster Matt! ROCK ON! BUILD STRONG!
Thanks! You too :D
Great video, I've still not made my old airfix Lancaster!! I bought resin radial engines, bulged bomb bay, etc, to make a mk2 , and lovely to see all hand painting, well mostly. I too use spray cans for primer to give a nice start, and spray varnish for decals. I had the idea to keep the disused Merlin engines to make a mk2 beaufighter, which is still on the horizon...still, I've been thinking of this one for a while, so many thanks, very therapeutic to see it made the old fashioned way, cheers
thanks for watching!
Great job on the model and it will get added to my Stash soon!
Thanks for watching!
Really helpful video,I've just ordered this kit for a later project.
Keep up the fantastic video's.
Awesome, thank you!
I've just received a Revell model of this aircraft for Fathers day. I'll be refering to this vid alot.
Nice! I got the Revell Nighthawk for Father's day this year
Thanks for a very easy-to-watch video. Full of handy tips like PVA glue for transparent parts. I really liked your pragmatic approach to kit building which balanced time, effort, skill and expense to produce a worthwhile and rewarding result without getting bogged down with fiddly techniques or accessories.
Glad it was helpful!
Not many modellers still brush painting in their videos, well done for doing it your way 👏
Thank you very much!
WOW!!! great work! She's a beaut!
Thank you very much!
Came together very nicely in the end
Thanks for watching!
Great video Matt, always like to watch your content!!
Glad you enjoy it!
To solve the silvering problem just brush that area with Tamiya Extra thin cement. WARNING! DO NOT OVERBRUSH IT, if you do it, you it will eat the decal and ruin it,so just a tiny bit, and the silvering will vanish.....
All in all, its just as I expected, the best kit you posted on your chanel so far: The weathering is moderate, as it should be, paint dryed incredibly well, as I can't see any brush strokes or what so ever, and you nailed the varnish work, as satin coat is the perfect choice, thus making the kit look more realistic, than it would work with a coat of dead matt varnish. I think you might just have a chance to win if you' d send this one out to some competition..... All in all a great kit, great work, worth every penny and time you spent, and diorama is just ideal for this kit... Might suggest some RAF gas truck on the grass, but, its not obligatory.... Well done Mat, you maxed it out!
Thanks! I'll probably leave this on as is for now, but i'll keep your suggestions in mind
Thank you Matt for your time and info content a wonderful source of practical advice beautiful end product 🤗
Glad you enjoyed it!
Wonderful build!
I’m some months late but amazing work. The camo and paint job is amazing and it shows how that you can get a well finish with brushes which inspired me to stay with brushes
Thanks a bunch!
very good. i remember doing the airfix kit years ago. guy gibson would be proud of your model !
Thanks! :D
Great video of a nice looking Model there. Small point. The seat you referred to as Flight Engineer, is actually the Wireless Operator. The warmest seat on the aircraft due to it being next to the only heating outlet!
The Engineer sat next to the pilot and the decal you applied to the right- hand fuselage is his fuel gauges.
Fantastic! Thanks for the info 😊
Thanks for keeping it simple!
I try
I remember my late father making the Dambusters kit many years ago. Thanks for that memory Matt! :)
I'm glad it helped bring back those memories :D
@@ModelMinutes nice to see that kit won the vote mentioned in your flying hours tokens video.
@@ModelMinutes BTW it might simplify any future Lancaster models if you leave off the bomb bay doors and make one ginormous bomb as neither Tallboy (5 ton) or Grand Slam (10 ton) would fit with the doors on :) Actually I think they left off the mid upper turret too, to save weight.
Happy to see a hand painted model. Great job.
Thank you very much!
well done Matt this is some of your finest work. The lanc & diorama are real stunners. This & the Armstrong Whitworth Whitley you made are both brilliant. I can honestly say you have a real talent for big British Bombers. I would love to see your take on the other big WW2 RAF bombers (Handley Page Halifax & Short Stirling) & the mighty Avro Vulcan .
(BTW I'm glad to see the turntable works well with a big model & diorama. Great to know for my future big builds)
Thanks! Perhaps I will have to look into those other ones too!
Excellent guide, I just go this plane for christmas.
awesome!
Great video build. I’ll be using this later when I build mine. Like you said, shame there are no figures included!!
Thanks! Yes, it is a shame that no crew are in the box :(
A lovely model, it reminded me of a diorama my Dad made me many years ago which had a resupply team tending to it. Very impressive and it's encouraging me to give it a go myself
sounds awesome!
I always struggle with airplane kits with gaps in plastic joins and the brush painting thick paint but yours looks really good. 👍🏻🤩
You can do it!
Very nice build and diorama 👍
Thank you very much!
Great finish, it really surprises me how you get such a nice finish with brush painting. I am currently working on the same kit so I hope it turns out half as good as yours.
You can do it!
Great!!! Learned a good deal. Thanks.
Glad to help
I like the model and the display set. Congrats.
Thanks!
That is far bigger than the Blenheim, phew looks fantastic!
Thanks!
Beautiful !!
Thank you!
Really great diorama, with the figures added it adds a sense of realism to the aircraft. Both me and my brothers had made this plane way back in the 70s from the Airfix brand . I think its very popular amongst Aircraft modellers along with the Spitfire.
Wonderful build mate 👍👍
Thanks 😊
Lovely result. It does the mighty "Lanc" justice.
Thanks!
Helped me a lot when I was building mine
awesome!
amazing work. i should get a Lancaster kit!!!!
Go for it!
Great build! I've recently bought a Lancaster kit and hope it looks as good as yours when built 👍
I’m sure it will!
If I had the room I'd buy one of these and build it. I made the Airfix one back in the early 2000's but this one is beautiful!
Thanks!
Brilliant, I’m currently making this same model, I wish I’d watched this before I started though.
:D
Nice work I am currently building a Lancaster so now I know what it looks like and how to properly paint it
Glad I could help, i hope you enjoy your build!
great video matt.. nice build too
Thanks 👍
I had one of these, originally produced in dark green plastic. It must have been from one of the very last batches to be made with Revells original moulds, because there was so much warping in the fuselage and wings, and body gaps around the engine nacelles, that it was impossible to produce even a half decent model from it. In the end I threw the whole thing away, the only model that I have ever discarded.
This one looks to be a retooled version and is a vast improvement on what went before.
Sounds like a pretty bad kit that! Yes, this is the more recent version from revell
yes that was a terrible model very inaccurate too .
First I’ve seen this... simple but effective...putting the ground crew in the diorama gives it scale and the human element... looks like a great kit.. there was a book written... don’t no when it came out... called BOMBER.. about the RAF campaign against Germany... had it paperback... not sure if I still have it... always enjoy your work...CHRIS FROM THE USA...NOVEMBER 18th 2020
Thanks for the info Chris! Glad you liked this one :)
I built the earlier version of this kit when I was a kid and later got the airfix pre-2012 kit was much better than the 60s kit. But it was still fun. I moved away from scale modelling to model railways and have been looking at giving aircraft another go, though storage is a concern for the larger planes like this.
Great video with some useful tips. I know its a few years old now, but everything should still be relevant i think other than games workshop reformulated nuln oil recently, so anyone getting it may find it more glossy now. Army painter tones are a decent alternative.
thanks for the info!
Hi Sir... fantastic plane and diorama! I bought myself a DC3 Sterling that I am very excited to start! As a new builder that I am, I am collecting the most information on the building process that I can, aas the best solutions for several problems and issues ahead, the colors, where is best or vital to use cement other than pure PVA! Good job !
Thanks for watching!
I have been waiting since the video you made about your collection
I hope you will enjoy it :D
@@ModelMinutes I'm sure
You are a genius mate!
Thanks!
Damn I missed it :( great video though. I have this kit and it looks nice! Great build
Thanks! Which version do you think you will do? The BI or BIII?
I haven’t decided yet however I have done an airfix b.1 so I might try something different??
super amazing airplaine. the real life video is wort to watch :) i love the engine part very detailed.
:)
i have the very same kit at home. i got it out of the rubbish skip at work still in the box.
someone had made a start constructing and painting it and as far as i can tell it is all there.
sometimes kits can be saved and rescued :)
Model Minutes At one time I use use too Do this kind of Modeling,Many years back There was A lot of Hobby Shops Around back then and still are But you would have to travel a good distance to go to.,Now this Model I built back when I was younger Had retractable landing gears and The wheel at the end under the Rudder Which all wheels would Rotate.. I think I just might do this again, buy anything you Want The Burt Landcaster..My choice was Tamiya Kits were true And Straight no plastic was warped...Very fine model you were putting together... Happy New Year From Florida 👍👍👍👍👍
Thanks for watching :)
Avro Lancaster...il mio primo modellino nel lontano 1976. Avevo 12 anni.
:D
Nice job. Surprised you hand painted this aircraft.
Thanks! I didn't find the hand painting to be too difficult
CANNOT WAIT
:D
I made the airfix version but i've never seen something this good
thanks :D
i like all your build videos
thanks! :)
Very nice modelling here👍👌
Thanks!
Ive subbed now great channel Model Minutes
Banks Road modern image thanks! I appreciate your support ☺️
Not so bad without airbrush. congrats for your another great model in collection. Someday you must show us your whole collection. Cheers.
Maybe one day
Nice one 😎
Thank you! Cheers!
i love the lancaster. favourite plane
:D
When i was makin this model i put the fuselages together and taped them up then i realised where is the gunner turret on the top gone i searched for ages turning everything upsidedown then i realised it was inside the fuselage luckily i managed to slide it out
Oh no! That does happen sometimes
Yeah, welcome to the club! Dropped a turret into a big (well, 1/48) B-25 just the day before yesterday. It looked hopeless but found it could come out thru it’s own mounting fuselage hole. Talk about fiddly!
Nice.. I use twisers for the smart parts and airbrush sind 3 years.
It save paint. But nice build anaway
Cool, thanks
Amazing results from just hand painting!. Awesome work sir! The 👌👍👏
Thank you so much 😀
well done matt really enjoyed this vid,,many thx for sharing, loved it,,,,ps which morons would give this the thumbs down,,, lets see your buildsssss
Thanks for watching! Sadly, you can't always make everyone happy
Hi! I just wanted to say that i really enjoy watching your videos. Thank you for making such good content!!
Glad you like them!
amazaing SKILLS!
I figured out the baseplate problem but it involves time-travel. We had no CA glue in those days. With Krazy Glue you can cut bits out of paperboard and soak the bit with CA, plasticizing it. This actually works. We had no Krazy Glue YET we won the war...wait...the modeling war. We called ourselves "builders" and "crew".
hmmmm
I built the Dambuster version. Not to this high standard but added solar lights and have suspended it 10 inches above my pond. There’s a couple of Spitfires hanging there too.
I saw! Looked amazing!
Bought this model today March 17th from Hobbycraft for £16.50, Yes they checked the price but it was correct , so I'm now looking forward to build my first Lancaster bomber since I was a teenager in the early 80s lol (usually build tanks but really wanted a Lanc)
that's a good price!
That looks fantastic! I builded the revell 1:72 b17g. (Buildvideo is on my channel). That is also a very good kit.
Nice! I've got that in my stash somewhere
I built that kit in 2010. Everything fit fine, but there are a few small things that were frustrating. It sits next to their B-17F, both built to the 306th BG standard. I want to try a ‘high end’ brand B-17e and I’ve found some early (Pre tail guns and ball turrets). I’d really like to create the Boeing 299 from one of those kits.
This aircraft model for me is a dream which I am eager to fulfill. 💙🔥😍
It's not too expensive so i recommend you get one! :D
@@ModelMinutes yes will definitely
"Props...always...spin! What planet are you from? What is your mission, airman?" in high John Cleese falsetto. If it was the sixties I would have made a baseplate from spare bits. Might take me...a week! You had to be a bit nuts to build those Aurora 99cent kits.
I'm not too fussed seeing as these things will be static display models
I would’ve gone for a misty clear coat before decals as decals do not adhere to matte surfaces well it needs to be smooth and glossy for a great bond and finish then you can always go over the top with satin afterwards 👌🏼, pro tip
satin isn't matt though . . .
FYI, the 2 chairs behind the pilot are for the Navigator and Wireless Operator NOT the Flight Engineer. He didn't have a permanent seat, just a folding canvas seat to the right of the pilot where he could access the fuel cocks etc. The Flight Engineer often stood for the majority of the flight.
Yes, I am aware of this thanks to the previous comments of some very knowledgeable people. Isn't it interesting though! That poor guy had to be on his feet almost the entire time :(
Nice
Thanks
@@ModelMinutes no problem
@@ModelMinutes Matt I alpolaize for not seen it live but online school was more need
I love the Lancaster
:D
Great build Matt👌 Did you shoot a tutorial on your ground crew out of interest?
Thanks! Yes, i cover those in part 2 ua-cam.com/video/zkzRSwnf9JY/v-deo.html
YIPEE!! I have this model and have yet to make it so I watched this with serious attention. Now Matt of course I watch all your work like that! Lol 😊
Thanks for the PVA info as I didn’t know. Ditto the sealer spray, got some on order.
Now the paint: yours looks great however it should have those black and white stripes to prevent attack from friendly forces?
Thanks
Bob
England
Thanks Bob - according to the paint scheme instructions in the kit, they make no mention of the D-Day stripes I believe you are referring to. Seeing as the RAF bomber fleet's primary mission was night bombing and operating deep within German territory (and at higher altitude) I imagine that friendly fire from ground troops wasn't considered an issue
@@ModelMinutes hi, I noticed on some kits the wings are marked…….the allies created paint schemes to aid identification and therefore reduce friendly fire incidents. We used a white background with black stripes.
Why wouldn’t Airfix not do this on these models?
@@BobMuir100 it wasn’t historically accurate, these aircraft didn’t have them
Just a recommendation but why don’t toile get the airfix bomber esupply set to add to the diorama? Just an idea
It's something I did consider, and may add in the future
Super like.
Thank you! Cheers!
