- PATCH 7.1: STILL RELEVANT AS OF THIS NEW UPDATE (read pinned comment!)
Here's a quick rotation video showing off Black Mage's level 100 Standard Opener and Rotation!
The Black Mage guide on the Balance is very

My GCD timer is 2.40s, which is not the only spell speed that BLM uses. Do check The Balance to see what spell speeds should be used. Regardless, the rotation should still remain the same!

PATCH 7.1 UPDATE: Hi guys, in patch 7.1 BLM has received 2 pretty nifty changes (for single target) - Despair is now instant cast, and you have 2 charges of Leylines! In terms of the rotational execution, it's more or less the same as before. The instant cast Despair means that you have more leeway for error if you press something wrong. And a 2nd charge of Leylines means that you have the freedom to drift in cases where you have issues using the full Leylines during 2min windows. But do note that if you were to drift it, try and use 1 charge of Leylines earlier so that you don't overcap on Leylines. Always maximise resources and don't lose out an entire use of Leylines!
UPDATE: As @Lordlos9 has pointed out (at ~02:11), I should have spent the Fire 3 Proc before using the Paradox that was generated from Manafont. Don't waste free damage!
Hi everyone! Unlike most jobs in the game, Black Mage’s rotation is one that’s flexible and not really set in stone. Like my other videos, this video is mainly intended to introduce and help new black mages better understand their level 100 rotation, so the content here only consists of Standard BLM gameplay.
I tried to use the text to describe what I’m doing in the rotation, but because BLM’s rotation is not fixed, I had to settle and spread the pointers over the video length, otherwise the entire screen would have just been text. Whatever is written is practised throughout the video though, so see if you can notice them!
As always, refer to The Balance guides that’s linked in the description if you want to go deeper into the art of explosions. All the best everyone!
Thank you for this, very useful 🙏
Glad it was helpful!
Why don't we use Flare instead of Despair at the end of the fire phase so we got our last stack to cast Flare star ? (00:43)
From The Balance guide: "Using Flare for the extra Astral Soul stacks to enable an additional Flare Star in the opener before the Manafont is not worthwhile. Even if the Flare is instant-cast, it is too weak of a spell to justify using it for single-target to use over Despair, particularly when considering the lost potency from Flare is during raid buffs and the extra Flare Star usage occurs after buffs expire."
Personally, if you ask me, finishing the opener with Flare -> Flare Star feels like the intended rotation (it fits too well!), but sometimes the potencies just don't support it. But unless we spreadsheet out ourselves, it's best to follow the rotation that the theorycrafters have calculated.
There’s a non standard line that you can do with manafont which is gain over just using at the end of a fire phase, I would look into it (Still thanks for the videos, they still do help out alot)
Hmm this video is intended mainly for showcasing standard gameplay (and I’m just not familiar with non-standard BLM), so I wasn’t aware of this non-standard manafont line. Could you elaborate on it? Sounds interesting since I can’t think of using Manafont anywhere but after you’re done with the Fire Phase
I'm also curious... could you explain?
You wanna elaborate?
@@omupenguin So you'd do Triplecast... Flare Star/Despair ... whichever you'd wanna do ... and then Transpose>Ice Paradox>Xenoglossy>Transpose>Manafont.
It's so weird ... I don't even know how much of a Potency Gain it is ... but it's a cluster of abilities and you only do it FOUR times over a fight ... 5 or 6 if you're doin' M4S.
@Nimoot Thanks for sharing! From the onset, I think the main benefit of this is probably for movement? Since you get a use of Ice Paradox before going back to Fire 4 spam. But I’m just speculating here.
Dunno if u will read this, but can you show your HUD config? It looks so clean
You seemed to manafont without using fire 3 proc. Why is that? Is the damage irrelevant or is it somehow slower? Or was it a mistake?
Are you talking about the F3 Proc from manafont? I use it later (actually almost all the time) after transposing from Ice phase and this tech is typically referred to as “AF1 F3P”. We use this since a Fire 3 in Fire Phase is still more damage compared to Fire 3 from Ice Phase.
@@omupenguin at 2:03 you ignore fire 3 and just use manafont. Then you used paradox before your fire 3 even tho paradox gives you a fire 3.
I see! This is a mistake on my part, totally didn't notice it. You're right, I should have used Fire 3 before Manafont. Thanks for pointing it out!
That said, there also exists optimisations regarding the use of the F3P before Manafont. Here's an excerpt from The Balance's BLM guide:
"With Manafont now granting full resources including a Paradox, normally we will end up with a spare Firestarter proc pre-Manafont that we need to burn in Astral Fire III before we generate a new one with the second Paradox. While the proc used in Astral Fire III is still fairly solid, it’s not as valuable as it would be otherwise since we cannot use it to enable AF1 F3P.
This can lead way towards justifying an alternative setup pre-Manafont that does not generate this Firestarter proc since it is otherwise “wasted” in Astral Fire III, and can also potentially help adjust alignment for an earlier Manafont usage."
It exists... but the guide doesn't really elaborate much else on this. Unless you're trying to parse on BLM, I don't think it should matter that much. As you mentioned, just spend the proc before the 2nd Paradox!
thanks a lot for the guide !
I have a few questions regarding high thunder : is it ok to let it run off for a few second or is it a great dps loss ? is it ok to refresh it while in ice if it's like under 10sec to be confortable in fire phase ? if i have to move while in fire phase and i have no cd, is it ok to instant cast it even if the boss still have the debuff (if i have nothing else i guess) ?
Here's what they in The Balance's guide:
"A large portion of the damage from High Thunder comes from the DoT damage, with less on the initial hit compared to procs from last expansion. As a result, letting the DoT fall off for a while and losing DoT ticks or conversely having enough early refreshes to result in an extra refresh is fairly costly and should be generally avoided or otherwise accounted for when making situational decisions."
At the end of the day, letting it run off WILL be DPS loss, and refreshing it too early will result in DPS loss as well. I know that keeping up HT can be hard (it's a big part of why I don't play much BLM), but it's just something you have to learn to fit into your rotation. If you really need that instacast movement, I guess it's ok to instant cast it rather than to do nothing? You might want to consult The Balance regarding this though. But I feel that if you encounter that issue, you should see what you can do to ensure that you have a insta-cast at that particular point in time (using Triple-Cast elsewhere, using Swiftcast earlier so it comes off cd earlier, trying out alternate lines, etc).
@@omupenguin thanks a lot !
Why i always see transpose in every rotation? Is there some secret interaction i missed?
Yes, if you have fire 3 proc then you should transpose after ice phase. You get a damage bonus for casting fire 3 in astral fire. Just use paradox or sometimes thunder to weave it.
Note that if you don't have the proc or it is about to run out and you're not sure if you'll have time DO NOT transpose. You will ruin your fire phase because you will have to spend mp on fire 3
To add on to h4rdtr, you do less damage when casting Blizzard 3 from Astral Fire, and Fire 3 from Umbral Ice. The idea is that when you have an instant cast B3 or F3 available (either from swiftcast, triplecast, or firestarter), you want to transpose into that UI1 or AF1 to use B3 and F3 respectively.
summoner after?
Gunbreaker next, then Summoner/Paladin!
