This may sound crazy, I use a cane and walker and have balance issues, but find that I can ride my bicycle for 30 minutes or so. I have to avoid hills and traffic and stay in lower gears but it does seem to improve balance. The hardest part is getting on and off the dang bike.

I do these balance exercises plus more! It’s so great that we’re always on the same page. 😊 I started in the corner but have graduated to doing these everywhere. I do the tandem walking now too using the lines of my decking boards or the ones on the kitchen floor. Before starting this, I had to be good at catching myself. For this I did Stomps to the side. Picking one leg up and stomping it down to the side. I followed the lines for this too. The purpose was to be able to firmly plant my foot to stop a bad fall. When I started Stomping I couldn’t really feel my feet. I think all that stomping has reawakened those connections! I might still have half asleep legs and feet, but they respond as long as I’m not ‘thinking to hard’. I really improved my types of dizziness with those neck exercises which I do with my eyes open and then with them closed. It all adds up to Retraining Connections!! Never give up; Never quit!! #WeHaveMS ❤️⚔️❤️

These are great tips! I had to laugh- my PT had me do lots of walking while moving my head side to side, up and down. That was one of the hardest things after my last big flare two years ago; I’d get so dizzy and then want to topple over. Thankfully, it’s a lot better now (though not gone) but the memory gave me a giggle.

Excellent video Doctor Boster! I just finished my annual in-patient evaluation yesterday and those exercises you demonstrated in the corner were confirmed by my physical therapist. In fact, they were a part of the evaluation testing. They always recommend parallel bars, like I have an inflatable set that I carry around in my hip pocket. But I really like the idea of going into the corner to avoid the falls. A couple of chairs is what I’ve been using. I can make some bars on my own but not inside the house, due to space limitations. But the corner idea just saved me a bunch of work. I do a lot of work in my small garden and all of the bending, standing, kneeling, up/down labor really works on my balance and strength. Thanks man! Keep up the excellent videos and work!

I did end up with a Physical therapists. I learned some exercises that have helped some. Vestibular exercises: I have an X on a post it on a plain wall. For 30 seconds I focus my eyes on the center of the X while moving my head side to side, also up and down. First did this sitting, got very dizzy and nauseous. After 6 weeks I can do this now standing feet together. Still get dizzy doing this with eyes closed. Also, hold a post it in my hand, move the post it in one horizontal direction and move my head the opposite, again focused on the center of the X.
I was told my right eye moves past the center and backs up to focus. Still working on this.

This video was for me I have balance issues. I’ve been through PT 2 times. I am on the after track program for exercise in the PT room. I still have poor balance and it’s frustrating but I’ll ask Jenni my PT for more balancing exercises But maybe I’m as good as I can be after having ms for 20 + yrs. I will never stop trying though. Thank you Dr.

  • @MsIris54

Thanks for this video Dr B! My PT had me do these exact same exercises and they helped me tremendously! I’ve also had a chance to use a Wi balance board. I don’t own one but it’s really cool and a lot of fun!
I also find Tai Chi to be a great help in addressing balance issues. As I practice Tai Chi, I am able to clearly identify where I may have some weakness and also see improvement over time.
More recently, my PT has given me some eye gaze training exercises to do. My eyes don’t always work well together, which causes vertigo and poor balance for me. The exercises are very effective and I will add, a couple of my Tai Chi exercises also mimic the eye gaze training.
Love your channel, thanks for all you do!

"Betty Edsall I don’t have MS but watched video because my daughter in law has MS. I wanted to learn to be of support to her. However I have a balance problem and cried when I heard you say WHY we have balance problems. Have been to PT, doing exercises but no one told me why I have a balance problem but PT said I do not have vertigo. I told NP I was constantly dizzy & wobbled so much I almost fall. She said you need PT. Why haven’t the doctors told me WHAT causes this, I got my answer in less than 3 minutes from you! Have neuropathy in toes, need a left knee replacement, right is done & PT says I have a very weak right hip, and the left is not strong & my back is weak & painful, hard time standing for 30 minutes. Sure I’m almost 80 but I’m not dumb or lazy, & I’m don’t have one foot in the grave! My glasses are ill fitting, make feel like I’m about to fall over & because of a move haven’t had lenses replaced. Lenses made right, Rx was wrong, I need to see ophthalmologist & get new glasses, I need an orthopedist & evaluation, I had a full audiologist exam and was told maybe it’s inner ear but no reason found there & somehow I got lost in a hopeless shuffle. Changing medical insurance so I can self refer & not wait months in between to see doctor for quick in & out visits. I have hope I can correct this. Always thought it was something in base of my neck/spine. I’m much to young to let them bury me
    yet! Thanks for listening!

Woah. Looking side to side is so difficult to do without falling. I have made significant progress with my balance issues, but I just found an opportunity for improvement!
    Things that helped me:
Practicing sitting down and standing back up repeatedly, balancing with feet together (started further apart and worked my way), standing with feet in tandem (for nearly half a year I couldn't put one foot in front the other at all), and standing with one foot slightly raised (off the floor).
But... MOST of the credit for the partial recovery goes to my PT team. Right side weakness was a big player. They helped me to rebuild strength which had somehow disappeared after an attack.

Hello Aaron, thanks for this video! Never thought about a Wii fit balance board! Wonderful idea! Trying to convince my husband to get one for christmas;)
I am exercising every day, including balance exercises, like you showed standing in a corner and try to stand straight and just move my head. Hard work I can tell you!
What I have tried and failed completely was standing heel to toe and try again. I fell, although I tried to hold myself on the wall. Well, some more bruises!
My physical therapist, who is very patient and nice, lets me do more occupaional stuff, cause I need it for ma daily work at home, like cutting veggies on the counter of my kitchen without holding on to the counter. Hard work! But I am getting better.
My left side is weak, getting weaker every week. First it was only my left leg, now it's also my core and hand and arm.
I am scared of falling I have to be honest with you, but I try my best every day.
Have a wonderful weekend! best regards, Britta

I like the video! There are a few other things that you can do to help your balance. If you want to do a little more to help your balance you can stand on one foot and close your eyes. Try to hold it for at least a minute. I recommend making sure you are safe by cornering yourself with the chair like you did in this video. When you get used to doing this with your hand on the chair reduce by one finger until you can do it with no fingers.

I’ve been diagnosed for a few months now & my balance is awful! i was a runner before my first episode of MS- never had a symptom before & woke up with no balance and extreme left sided
weakness, i even couldn’t lift my arm up & my hip flexor, knee and foot was very weak, so scary! it quickly developed to complete foot drop. I still suffer with terrible balance issues. I’m in physical therapy twice a week and it’s helping but i’m willing to try anything to help. I think one of these would be great for me 😊

I’m going to have to look into implementing the balance exercises. I do have a WiiFit Board that I haven’t used in a few years. In thinking about it now, even then when I was exercising regularly with it (pre-MS diagnosis), I had trouble balancing with some of the games. Those balance exercises and games became ones that I would avoid. Guess maybe my body was trying to tell me something then. Hmm...like they say, hindsight is 20/20.

Thanks for the tips, Dr. Boster. I practice yoga and Ti Chi. Both help me significantly. Yoga, especially helps me with muscle cramps.

Which do you enjoy more overall? Which is your "goto" for relaxation? Best one for balance? Hope you don't mind, I'm super curious! #BalanceBoardMS

Aaron Boster MD For me personally Yoga tends to help me more with balance. It also lowers my stress and helps me to relax.

I have a lazy butt and weak hip muscles. This means my pelvis is unstable when I walk, and I have to use other muscles of my back, legs and feet to walk, keep me upright and balanced. This leads to a messy situation where my balance becomes worse because of pain and fatigue.
As part of my home physical therapy, I do 1 legged stands (X Seconds x 10 Reps) to strengthen my hip muscles. And I use the kitchen counter top for support, which is a lot more stable than a chair.
I also do my therapy in the corner of my kitchen that blocks my right side. This is because I tend to fall right when I lose balance, and I more likely to grab to my right to break my fall.
On a good day, I can prepare myself a snack as I exercise, on bad days I am just a drunk and hungry ballerina. 😊

TheLaney, TY for the kind words! I'm glad you like this last one. To be honest I was excited to share this one!!
I have an instagram OHIOHEALTHMS account that I stepped away from a while back. I really wanted to put more efforts/time into UA-cam and I still maintain very active (5-8 posts daily) twitter and fb pages. I would love to pick up insta again, I just struggle with work (job as doctor), life (home) and time on social balance! I'd welcome your feedback, suggestions or thoughts Laney!

It took me 9 months to get to the point where I could stand heel to toe (let alone walk!) or with feet together, and simple practice wasn't enough! I'd just fall backwards at an oddly specific angle. Neuroplasticity, no matter how long it takes, is totally worth it!!

Hi Dr B, saw this awhile ago and got the Wii console, Wii Fit and balance board, and Wii Fit Plus. Surprising to see cog all over the place. Doing clinical Pilates too. I see improvement. Does it ever get 'fixed'? Or will I always have to work at it?

What would you recommend to help with balance issues when it comes to my eyes.. I have some double vision and when I close my eyes I completely lose my balance. To compensate I try too make sure I am holding onto something when I sneeze or sit when I shower... it would be nice to not have this issue. And is there some type of exercise I can do to help get ride of the double vision?

My dizzy issues dont take away my feeling of balance. Even while dizzy I know that I am still standing but I cannot any longer process my surroundings and movement. Which is nearly the same thing but I wouldnt say balance directly.

But either way the more I work at activities the more it seems to rewire away from having those issues when I do those tasks.

I also had a lot of pain in my arches. Found that I can no longer wear shoes with an arch support. That ‘support’ puts too much pressure on my arches even if the shoes fit just right. I can’t wear shoes designed to roll your feet right as you walk either. Those types of shoes roll me right on over! The point is, I solved a lot of my pain issue with finding the right shoes along with feet stretching exercises. Hope this helps! Never give up! Never quit looking for solutions! ❤️⚔️❤️ #WeHaveMS

What should an MS patient do if (God forbid) we were ever pulled over by the police who wanted to do a field sobriety test. The "tight rope walk" and finger to nose thing are really hard for me on most days.

After a half a dozen falls over 10 years, My Physical therapist is trying many things to loosen my leg muscles (Severe double vision/Haze) does not help - One fracture in leg puts me back by years
Therapist say "Strength + Flexibility = Balance" - Just standing with eyes closed (With partial support), Half squats against wall & dynamic half squats near bed (For any unplanned falls), walking above a rope ladder on ground, Walking backwards (With walker) etc in daily routines, Exercise routines changed every ~10 days
All these help, but slow degradation over years, is unavoidable :-((
P.S: Neuro says "As on date, its up to you to learn to live with it" - smh

My MS doesn't let me close my eyes, as I immediately fall backwards (it's instantaneous, not a slow lean) - would this improve if I force myself beyond the fear of falling & do it w/ the exercises?

    • @AaronBosterMD
      @AaronBosterMD  5 років тому +2

I'd talk to your PT first

    • @msenit4lifepattylong76
      @msenit4lifepattylong76 5 років тому +1

M McLane I had this issue once upon a time. Still do some, but not usually. Even leaning forwards threw me backwards off my feet. My PT had me sit up as straight as possible in a chair with my shoulders down (so I didn’t get hurt) and do these neck exercises. By doing them sitting to start with, I got rid of that falling backwards when I looked up and when I closed my eyes and tilted my head. It’s all about safety while exercising. Form is really important! Hope this works for you. It’s no fun falling backwards or feeling like you are! ❤️⚔️❤️
