There should be more video and channels that dive into the details that everyone needs like you do. Thank you for the video, hopefully I'll have an s4 before the end of the year

      @@tarybanton2408 oh avoid like the plague..I was very lucky I had a deposit down on a 2010 s5 fast back ( same s tronic dsg vw box) on my way to collect it the dealer rang me to say it ha developed a gearbox fault , did I want to wait and come back when they had it resolved or refund. I then spent hours researching and best case its a 4k rebuild of the box. people will tell you it's only the mech unit but there's a reason you see so many around 100k miles for sale. They are being picked uk in auction and the faults probably reset. I am not trying to scare you , do the research yourself but its a dirty secret in the VW world.

    Thank you for this video, this was among the most useful and informal buyers guide which ultimately helped me to make a decision over the RS models and buy my S4 last month! I would have not considered jumping into an S4 ownership without knowing that it is NOT a time bomb in terms of being an engineering failure, knowing what could go wrong I managed to get one with the tensioners already done. You've got a beer on me!

    Good review. I've had a 6 speed manual B6 S4 Saloon from new in 2004 and still have it today, it's only done 47k miles.
    I think the manual is better, but the auto is nicer. The manual is also thirstier, I get 16 to 18 knocking about, and low twenties on a run. There is something special about being able to waste, quick modern cars, in a 15 year old Audi.

    I own a 2006 Audi S4 Avant with the 4.2 L V8 and I purchased it with only 60k miles.
    So far I've loved the vehicle and have had it for just over a year.
    I do worry about the well known timing chain issue with this vehicle but I do have a
    warranty until 100k and hope that if it does fail on me, it happens before 100k so they
    will take care of it. At least they SAID they would if it has any issues prior to 100k.
    I've put almost 15k miles on it in the last year and have drove several times from
    Northern Idaho to Sacramento California and she's held up nicely with every long trip
    I've taken thus far. Fingers crossed that she'll continue to play nice with me 👌👍

    Thank you for such a thorough review of the S4. Little did I know. Good that I do before going to view one. No gain without pain. Why don't people love the car the buy.
    Check list. B6 satnav was optional. Bose speaker system. Optional heated front and memory AND very rare heated rear. Parking sensors were optional. Follow home lights. Electric fold mirrors. Cruise control - left stalk. Seats in black or silver red a late option. Interior trim steel mesh, popular was carbon fibre, wood effect and piano black are rarer. Electric auto-dimming rear view.

    Really solid advice in this, top work guys 👌🏻
    A couple other things I’d chip in with now they’re getting that bit older. For example my B6 S4 avant is 15 years old now!
    - The intake manifold actuator/flap often fails at the age they are now, meaning you lose some performance low down. Budget £400-500 for a specialist to do this. There are DIY hacks for the budget conscious!
    - All specialists I’ve spoken to recommend to not change the auto gearbox oil unless you have a fault. Once changed there is a fair chance of issues arising. Audi does say these are sealed for life units but I’m still insure how anything could actually be sealed for life.
    - A healthy automatic model should be getting a solid 26-28mpg on the motorway. I’ve got an average of 23mpg from my last 5000 miles.
    They are lovely cars to drive and a bonafide modern classic 😎

    • @arablues4142
      @arablues4142 6 років тому

      Sealed system simply means there is no transmission oil dipstick. And lifetime fluid is a marketing term to keep the cost per kilometer/mile as low as possible on paper. That's why depending on a countries domestic brand marketing/warranty policies sometimes a car bought in the US will have "lifetime" maintenance free transmission oil,but the exact same Car bought in Some European countries do have recommended service intervals for gearbox oil. Also the same transmission used in other car brands will sometimes have service intervals where Audi says it's not necessary. The specialist who say don't change gearbox oil are mostly the ones who work for audi. An independent transmission will usually advice to change transmission oil at common intervals. Zahnradfabrik Friedrichshafen (ZF) the manufacturer of the zf transmissions in their specsheets will usually refer to manufacturers manual for service intervals. But when you contact them directly even they recommend to change oil every 60-80K miles depending on driving conditions.
      Most people who do change the oil (including me) have noticed quicker/less clunky/smoother shifts after the change.
      BUT if you have a high mileage car where the transmission oil has never been changed then it's true that replacing atf can expose wear that was not noticeable with the old fluid.

    • @pistonnerd
      @pistonnerd 6 років тому

      S4 I’ve read a lot of that information and it is interesting and slightly confusing when there is so much conflicting advice out there!
      My tip relates very specifically to the S4 as the vast majority of automatic models will not have had their gearbox oil and filter changed. A large part of this reason will be down to Audi’s advice.
      Couple this with the fact that B6 & B7 S4’s are between 10-15 years old now and most mileages north of 100k, there’s a fair chance an oil change could introduce an issue.
      Stupid of Audi to say they were sealed for life in the first place but then they don’t build cars in mind for the owners 10 years + down the line!

    • @TotalTechnik
      @TotalTechnik  6 років тому

      Hey there - than you for your comment, much appreciated!
      Yes, the Audi gearbox 'sealed for life' thing applies to many of their gearboxes, including the S4 and also the C5 RS^ that we also did a buyers guide on a short while back.
      The main thing is what is Audi's definition of 'life'? To them it may mean the warranty period 3/5 years depending on location.
      If an S4 lasts out 25 years to become a classic, it's unlikely to still have that original gearbox oil it would be fair to assume. So how long if 'life'?
      Audi likely have a period that they consider 'life' which may be when out of warranty, or maybe once the retail value has depreciated enough that they can bet that the car is no longer brought into them for work due to high workshop charges at main dealers?
      An interesting topic anyway!
      I had to get Audi to change my S4 gearbox oil, which they did circa 100,000 miles. This was because whilst moving into the garage one of the ATF cooling pipes split, and I was literally moving house two days later and off work with no time etc, so took it to them, spoke to the tech I've known for a number of years and just got them to do it whilst I moved home (and then had to get a train back to that city the following week from my new home to collect it again - nightmare!)
      But Audi CAN do it, but they choose not to if they can help it.
      But a good specialist should not object to changing it, but likewise they might advise if all is happy then let it be. But eventually it will need to be changed of course!

      @@pistonnerd NO they certainly don't. Audi's model seems to be get it to 100k and then after that, their job is done. My favorite is when you take a car to their dealership and they don't want to mess with it, they just give you a ridiculous quote or say you need a whole new engine/transmission. My local dealer quoted me 8600 to do the chain service ! For 14g you can get a new factory engine installed too lol.

    This one video just saved me a TON of coin on a B7 I almost purchased- cam chain issue.
    Here's a question for Audi freaks: I'm going to look at a 2008 S4 and same year RS4- SHOULD I stay away from the RS4, even though it's the same cash? (Service histories, mileage and options being similar).

    Not sure if anyone mentioned it already, but there is one very very interesting difference between B7 S4 and B6 S4. It is the Quattro generation V Gen. vs Quattro generation IV Gen. (manual transmission version only) + sport differential on B7 S4 (2008) :) I would love to buy one of these.

The camchains had already been done ( this was around £2.5k according to the invoice but did not include replacing the cam adjusters which are v expensive) , it had just had a major brake overhaul, it had a full main dealer service history and came with an Autoprotect third party warranty. I had the oil changed, 4 wheel alignment as it was juddering on full lock, new tyres and battery. Over the next few months the bonnet gas strut failed, as did the driver’s door electric window mechanism (cable broke), the boot lock (wouldn’t shut properly) and the ABS controller ( dashboard ABS light was on - had wheel sensor replaced, wiring checked, but fault was in the controller) which was replaced as an exchange under warranty. The radiator expansion tank cap had a failed gasket which caused the coolant to boil as it had lost pressure but this was easily replaced, and alleviated fears that it was something more serious! The gear shifting was occasionally jumpy and erratic and a gearbox inspection and oil change was recommended, but I sold it before splashing out on replacing the gearbox oil ( v expensive) and filter. It would have also needed a new gearbox sump as the refill plug had seized. I found the suspension very hard and unforgiving and the HID lights were very weak - probably needed replacing. On short winter trips the consumption was in the order of 15mpg. There’s not really much space in the boot and rear seat legroom is limited. HOWEVER, even though in retrospect I think I would have preferred a manual, there were times when it made me grin. Lots of power ( although not that much more than the B5 S4 I had owned previously), superb handling ( a trade-off for the harsh ride), if a little heavy at the front, a classy interior with great seats and ambience, and lots of fun with the paddles in sport mode. Quite an experience all round!

      Sounds like you got a semi-lemon or abused car. . . first of all, people blindly trust that dealerships know how to perfectly maintain their vehicles and this couldn't be further from the truth. In America the dealers are contracted with castrol and will change your oil with normal 5w30(sometimes european). This is inadequate. Oil is arguably the most important part of the engine and has everything to do with maintaining the extremely tight tolerances that german vehicles have. The best way to describe these cars is Quirky. They all have individual issues and lots of times they are systemic electrical issues because of the insane amount of sensors and things monitoring the car. I have owned a B5 and three B6 S4's, and a D2 S8 (all used). I know the 4.2 V8 quite well now. I hate to say it but I actually imagine that some of these issues were because of the fact they practically took your car completely apart and then put it back together to service the chain. Stressing many components, both in and post process. The amount of detail needed to do this job RIGHT is absolutely not going to be done in 60hrs at your dealership. . . The downfall of these cars is simple, maybe 1 in 25 has been taken care of in the way it needs to be. This is compounded by how many people treat cars poorly when buying them new. My mechanic has told me stories of people bringing him german cars with 60000 miles that have had 1 oil change and nothing else serviced. They want to fix the issues they're having and caused but that they have been ignoring, sell the car, go buy another new one and do it again. Its gross. Thanks for sharing your experience, It is important for people to hear. Hopefully these comments can help guide some people to good choices. My relationship with Audi and S-line cars is a love/hate one. I'm addicted though, and a large part of that is; No other stock car comes close until you buy a Porsche. Sure, other cars can compete but they fail in other areas, like Awd being a big one for me. Sure, I could buy an M3, but then I wouldn't be able to go 75mph around a 35mph corner in the pouring rain... and I live in the PNW. :) Cheers

    I agree with one other comment before you even consider the chain guide replacement route change the oil non return valves about £100 in parts. They have o rings that wear out allowing oil to drain back hence the rattle on start up. I disagree that it is a Audi thing, it’s not it wasn’t designed to rattle and it doesn’t if the non return valves are working as designed.

    • @TotalTechnik
      @TotalTechnik  6 років тому +1

      Hey there! Yes, nice train of thought - love the input!
      No, they did not design it to rattle, but unfortunately it is an Audi thing, here's their official Technical Service Bulletein on the subject:
      “The Camshaft Adjustment is hydraulically adjusted and controlled by the engine oil pressure. If the engine has been turned off for a long time, the oil pressure drops down and the oil partially flows back into the oil sump. To ensure an efficient camshaft adjustment right after an engine cold start, the oil pressure inside the camshaft adjusters must be built up as fast as possible. During this time, a rattle or knocking noise may be noticeable. This noise is normal at engine start and will last until the oil pressure is fully built up, which takes about 1-2 seconds. There is no applicable production solution.”

    What are the other things that can be done while servicing the cam chain? Is the water pump there as well? Are there other wear and tear items (while the engine is removed)?
    It will be expensive but I would rather do that than having the engine removed ever so often.

    2007 owner here, at 133k mi. I'm surprised that you've made no mention of excess oil consumption, which is widely reported (and with which mine is badly afflicted). The alusil cylinder bores are known for premature scoring with oil loss past the rings as a result. Valve stem seals are also said to be frequent culprits, particlarly as these age.

    Thanks for the video. 14 months with my b7 avant eBay purchase. Thankfully I had seen info on the rattle first and have run into all of the cosmetic issues you mentioned. I have ended up with an oil leak which i was unable to pinpoint exactly so complete a few common issues. Valve cover seals. Oil housing seals. New injector o rings. And new intake gasket. You mention it’s not worth tuning to stage one. But have you ever done or seen someone retune to factory or should the computer do this. It was running rich before I did the intake manifold gasket and runs fine not through ink any more codes. However it has a couple of times bogged down in 3rd or 4th gear under load as if there isn’t fuel. Just used to the power on demand

      My s4 has been running lean for many years sometimes the engine light comes on sometimes not. can't find a vacuum issue this intake gasket sounds a good idea. brought my car with a custom exhaust already install but hated the drone, so went and brought stock need them resonators i think.

      @TotalTechnik  6 років тому

      Hey there! Glad you enjoyed the video!
      Yes, they can be great cars to own. Oil leaks can occur, most commonly on the rocker cover gaskets on these, and that's easy to spot and cheap and easy to remedy. Sounds like your leak might be a bugger to hunt down!
      Yes, personally I think the gains for a stage one remap on these are not really worthwhile. For me, to choose between a stage 1 remap or a decent aftermarket exhaust I'd go exhaust.
      It takes a lot of money to get the power up on these by decent numbers.
      Return a car from remapped state to factory standard? Yes, whoever did the remap should be easily able to reverse it for you if that is what you're asking. If you don't know who did the remap it will be harder as you'll not know exactly what parameters have been adjusted, but still entirely possible by a good remap shop or specialist.
      Best of luck!

    Looking at a Nogaro blue b6 S4 soon. Only thing is it has 150k (miles) on the clock. The current owner doesn't have any receipts for the cam chain tensioner work, but surely they would have failed at this mileage? No cam chain rattle, only for a second on start up?

      Hey there! It could well be on original chains at 150,000 miles. I've seen that a couple of times before with higher mileages and good original chains.
      Also, just because he does not have the invoice, it could have been done by a previous owner so that is not really too suspicious TBH.
      Yes, just have a good listen to it idling as guzforce mentions. If it has a rattle it will be very noticeable.

      Glad you enjoyed it! Pretty much everything here also applies for the cabriolet. Things like the seats are different (not Recaro etc), but mechanically almost identical. Sticking roof storage box in the boot/trunk is fairly common and expensive/complex to fix so worth always testing the full roof function.

    Could someone please explain what the 15 seconds rule does to the camshaft chain and tensioners? I always assumed it's a good practice to give the fuel pump at least 5 seconds to pump the fuel and create the necessary pressure before starting the engine, but how it could possibly affect the camshaft chain and related stuff while the engine is not turning?

      This is not a huge issue like it is in the RS4? Yes, all cars can get carbon build up, but it's the RS4 B7 that suffers quite badly from this (certainly much worse than the S4!) which you may be thinking of?

    Hey I just wanted to say that this is a fantastic review! I’m currently looking at buying one right now in the US and I was wondering if you could help me out to see if this car is a good one or not. Also I have another question if the chain issue has already been fixed do I need to worry about it failing again? And what is the reliability like for that matter?

      Glad you enjoyed the review! Unfortunately we are not able to inspect cars, but this review should arm you with a load of information that most 'punters' would not have a clue about. A sellers worst nightmare, lol. Yes, the cam chain system will always have a limited life in these, but if the original chains lasted 15 years before being replaced, it is reasonable to assume the replacement may last somehwere near as long. It can vary quite a bit though and people have gotten unlucky at MUCH lower mileages and years. Short answer is yes, eventually it will need doing a second time. Good maintenance can really help the life of the chain system.

      Total Technik thank you so much! If the car already had chains done and replaced with rs4 parts within the last 10k miles do you think I should go for it? I want to be able use it reliably but I’m well aware that it’s an Audi and I’m prepared for those small gremlins

    • @patrickharten2293
      @patrickharten2293 4 роки тому

      Total Technik also i understand that the chains itself will need to be replaced eventually but what about the tensioners if you replace them with the reliable rs4 tensioners? Would you have to change out tensioners too?

    • @patrickharten2293
      @patrickharten2293 4 роки тому

      Total Technik also how reliable are these cars in general if the timing chain tensioners and chains themselves were replaced? Are there any other gremlins I should look out for

    Thanks for the video! Q: When you have had the timing chain done, will the problem return due to wear after a certain mileage?

    • @TotalTechnik
      @TotalTechnik  5 років тому +2

      Hey there! Well, it will return eventually, but not at a set mileage or age. I've seen B6 S4's on 185,000 miles on original chains and running well. But also seen them struggling at 65,000 miles too. So not really possible to put a fixed mileage or time on it. But yes, the theory is that is will happen again.
      But if it's taken 12 years (average B6 age) to need replacing, chances are you'll be fine for a similar amount if time again. Think of it like a long life cambelt change. Instead of paying £500-£600 each time a belt change would be needed, you'll have to pay more but less often. It hurts less if you apply some logic, lol!

    Hey! I have one of these B6s, Love it! And the engine is amazing, do you do comission videos for payments? Wondering if you can make a video about removing side skirts, as mine is damaged :(

    • @TotalTechnik
      @TotalTechnik  4 роки тому

      Excellent - glad you are enjoying the content :-) We don't produce videos for commisions unfortunately, but we do welcome any donations to help assist us in continung to produce content. Any donations can be made at: www.paypal.me/totaltechnik
      We have done door blade video (ua-cam.com/video/XnThAwyiBh0/v-deo.html) but not skirts for the B6/B7. We did do a skirt video on the RS6 C5 but that's a different system unfortunately so not too much use for you.

      The best oil for these Audi S4's is the Liqui Moly and it comes in a dark purpleish blue container.
      I use the same oil in my Audi and when I first picked up this Audi it burned oil rather quickly but
      as soon as I changed the oil with Liqui Moly it's been not only running much smoother, but hasn't
      burned hardly any oil in the last 3-4000 miles. I'm due for a change soon though.
      I have never heard anyone have anything bad to say about Liqui Moly and it has a 5 star review
      and is trusted #1 by Euro owners.

    Found an s4 for sale 4,500$ 06 , car has extensive service history but no chain job, no check engine light and at 155k miles should I ?

    • @TotalTechnik
      @TotalTechnik  4 роки тому +1

      Yes, provided it's a good car otherwise. A really strong service record goes a long way, ideally Audi main dealer or Audi specialist. Mileage is higher, so you know it's a job that will likely need doing eventually so factor it in if you are planning to keep the car for a while. I've seen S4's pushing 200k miles on original chains with no obvious issues, so there is a slight luck factor for sure.

      Glad you found the info useful. The S4 is an awesome car, but it's best to know the potential pitfalls beforehand and make an educated decision, rather than jumping in blind and getting stung down the line unknowingly.
      Yes, the A7 is also a very nice car. Not truly sport orientated like the S and RS models but still some very nice engines and trim levels.

    Should the chain be completely silent when listening at the wheel if it’s in good condition?

    • @TotalTechnik
      @TotalTechnik  4 роки тому

      Oooh, that's a somewhat open-ended question. The theory says yes pretty much, the practice says not necesarily. It is possible to hear cam chains doing what they do, but if it's not sounding healthy you'll know it! It should be pretty quiet back there.
