Vegeta took a lot of responsibility for his death and I do believe that is another reason he sacrificed himself in an effort to kill Buu. Vegeta was really hard on Gohan throughout this saga in particular but even though Gohan had slacked on his training he still very much respected the power within him. Let’s also remember that it was actually Gohan to trigger Vegeta’s anger and expose his vulnerability to Babidi and Dabura. Vegeta was so pissed that Gohan didn’t keep up with his training and knew he shouldn’t have been having so much trouble fighting Dabura.

He got a good bit of it back post-TOP but I doubt it was as much as in the Cell saga. Even Piccolo respects Gohan less because of how much he's neglecting his family for work.

He took something that vegeta did in universe 6/7 tournament. When vegeta raised his power high enough the enclosure couldn’t withstand it and broke, releasing the heat his opponent was counting on to win. Gohan did something similar when his opponent blinded him. Gohan used his super saiyan form to radiate his energy off his opponent and track his location in the ring. That just goes to show that although Gohan has raw power, he can also be an opponent xcellent tactician. He can analyze fighting styles, and find weaknesses, so when raw strength doesn’t do it, brain power takes over. I would even say that Mystic Gohan could have easily handled Golden Frieza, in Dragon Ball: Resurrection F, if not for the fact that Gohan, after Buu, decided to forego his training in leu of being a scholar and Family Guy😜.
As the Prince of Saiyans Vegeta wants all his subjects, all his saiyan brothers to be strong and live up to their fullest potential even if it means getting upset when they're slacking like he does with gohan from time to time.
I think a lot of it is just Vegeta's Saiyan Pride. A lot of people interpret his pride as the Prince of Saiyans to be just pride in himself, but it actually extends to his entire race. When those of Saiyan blood embrace their warrior heritage, it brings him pride. It's why he respects Goku despite their rivalry, and it's why he only shows respect to Gohan when he's not slacking on his training.
Gohans feats as a 3 and 5 year old are the reason why Freeza feared the saiyans to begin with. (Yes, ik Broly, but before broly was canon Gohan was a true prodigy.)
FACTS 💯 Beerus even showed great interest in Gohan's potential if he trained, he could probably give him a greater challenge than Goku. They've been referencing it a lot in Dragon Ball Super. Only time Vegeta gets mad at Gohan is when Gohan ISNT reaching his potential. Basically, He KNOWS how strong Gohan could be (Which is stronger than him) and doesn't utilize it.
