    I found on mine that having the rubber knee pads added made a noticeable difference in the comfort of the bike. Not that it will ever be considered a “comfortable” bike but it did help having a little wider tank circumference between your knees and more grip. Of course, I didn’t buy it for comfort, but because it’s the most beautiful motorcycle I’ve ever seen!

    I own this bike - it never disappoints. People drool over it when it’s parked. It goes 0-60 in 3.6 seconds. It handles like a dream and is comfortable on my 120 mile round trip to work. Even on rough pave. And those Metzlers do surprisingly well in heavy rain

      120-mile round-trip every-day sounds great . I have Metzlers on my mildly-cafe'd Yamaha TR1 (1982) I find-them really-well-Planted , just solid and confidence-inspiring . This is my first-experience with them in the last 50yrs (can't remember the ones before-that) they handle down-hill twisty-stuff well where the front gets pretty loaded-up under braking . That's a true-test for a tyre on the roads I ride regularly . Dave NZ

    The secret of touring on a bike with a sporty riding position is all down to a very relaxed upper body and a firm grip of the tank with the knees. Plodding along is a pain, definitely a progressive ride is required. Done thus touring on open road is heavenly life!
    Something like Stompgrip on the tank makes a big difference.

    • @kdsowen2882
      @kdsowen2882 Рік тому +2

      So True , a great core work-out too . Many people mistakenly try to control their bikes with arms/upper-body and few mention the importance of 'knee-grip' . Dave NZ

    I have a Thruxton RS and its not the most comfortable bike and i would not dream of touring on it but like you I have a GS. The suspension is rock hard for the type of roads you were on today. I had a professional set up done on the bike and it made a huge difference to the handling although its never going to be plush.
    The looks and the engine are the reason i have kept it. The torque never fails to put a smile on your face.

    After 60+ years of riding I purchased one. Having started on old British bikes I can say the Thruxton is as close to those as anything could be however the grunt of the 1200 is so far from anything back then. I have other bikes including a 22 Street Triple but this bike simple touches the soul.

    Picked mine up new today, British Racing Green and Silver . Spent some time out on it this afternoon. Have to agree with everything you said in your vid. Solid, well made bike that just feels quality. Steering I found quite heavy as well, although I have had no time to play with settings yet . Sticks to road like glue. Lovely to wind on the throttle and just go, although not too much as I am running it in. Stock exhausts actually sound quite nice. Mirrors were better than I expected. They are quite small but you can still see plenty and no vibration. It is more comfy than I expected but not a tourer for sure, more of a sunny Sunday bike. So many accesories to choose from as well. Definitely needs a rad guard , I think that`s the first thing on the list for me.
    You have some great roads and scenery there. What an awesome day for the bike.

    I've a Thruxton R (same geometry as the RS with a bit less power) with the Street Racer kit, which adds a nose cone fairing and lowers the bars a little further (also deletes the rear mudguard, adds slightly louder Vance and Hines exhausts and LED indicators).... Added entirely for the looks but my wrists take a while to get used to the bars every time I ride it. I've got the panniers and tank bag but TBH the weight you can put in them (as recommended by Triumph) is a few kilos - so they are hardly used as they also spoil the looks. Hence I tend to end up relying on a Kreiga rucksack for overnights.. But with a heavy rucksack it can get tiring with the tilted forward position and so around 150 miles is my limit (being in my 60s doesn't help). When some friends said let's go to the Alps - much as I would love to have taken it - I got a KTM adventure bike with panniers (something I said I would never do but at least I resisted a top box). But people definitely do tour on them... just not me!

      Coming-up to 69, I hear-you . My old-man-bike is a W650 and my go-to cafe-bike is an old yam TR1 xv1000 (I have an even-older TX650-cafe as well) . What I might have 'Winged-it' on years-ago , I think twice-about now and i use a rucksack as-well . I've started doing mild-weights and the Tibetan 5-Rites (a bit like yoga but only 5-different moves) as my bikes started feeling heavier every-year . I honestly noticed an incredible-difference after a month doing 'the-5' and it inspired-me to do the weights as-well (plus a few push-ups etc) They do say : Use it or lose it and for myself , it's working . Good-Luck, ride-safe, Dave NZ

    I haven’t ridden a Thruxton, but I’ve done some long tours on my BMW R1200S (including 425-mile days), which must be a similar riding position. I find that, from 50mph and more, the wind pressure on my upper body takes the weight off my wrists. Too much time in town traffic is the killer for me.

    Go Kate ! I would love to try the 1200 Thruxton , it sounds-great and like any 'Proper' Cafe' , looks fantastic as-well . I ride a cafe' TX650/700 , old like me and a fun 'seat-of-your-pants' bike to ride on roads like that . The key is to lock thighs/knees onto the tank and adjust your butt back/forwards to get the right upper-body angle . This allows more-relaxed arm-wrist-work and allows a lot of core-control over the bike . You won't need a Gym ! but I wouldn't be inclined to Tour on one, though I would if that's all I had . With 1200cc, you should almost be able to keep-up with an RE650 . Dave NZ

    I’ve ridden this bike enough to know it’s a real motorcycle; it’s something a Norton wanted to be when it grew up. Ergonomically, even though it’s more café than racer, I still wish it was more amendable to aftermarket “fixes” to make it a tad more (Speed Twinish?) comfortable.

    Nice to see you back in the saddle Kate, I say though it's a funny old life, I remember in the early seventies as a teenager how lot's of the young riders were ditching Brit bikes for the Japanese machines, me included. Just funny how it's gone full circle and the style of bike we had ditched back then are now in vogue again. Your Dad's not quite as old as me, but I bet he thinks along the same lines. P.S I would like to know what Mike thinks of the Enfield. Thank you.

    Reeled in 240 miles on my ‘17 Thruxton R, yesterday. I had an upgraded seat from Omega with a gel insert, otherwise I would have tapped out. Even on the better seat, for the last 20 miles, my 49-yr old rear end was over it. But a fun ride on a fun bike, nonetheless.

    Don't know why more so called road testers never venture to the Yorkshire Dales/North Yorkshire. The roads there are stunning. I am spoiled because they're only a short ride away for me. Best time is early morning when the roads are quiet and before Plod sets up their mobile cash points.

    Answer to your question, Kate, how does the bike handle long distance work?
    I have the Thruxton R, not the RS, but I'm guessing the ergonomics won't be radically different, (if at all).
    Comfort wise, personally I dont have an issue. The clip ons may look the part, but they are on risers and that makes a huge difference.
    I have leg injuries, left knee and hips, and while its nowhere near Gold Wing or GS comfort levels, I find it tolerable to say the least but other opinions may differ.
    Biggest problem I encounter is luggage luggage.
    I have a dual seat to allow the use of throw over panniers, and a tank bag, (Triumphs accessories).
    Not the best but if you travel light and launder, not too bad.
    I also fitted a supercharger, supplied supplied by TTS, makes it a bit more spicy, and one or two mods to compliment this addition.
    The fairing is also surprisingly effective effective.
    Thats about it really, hope thats helpfull.

    • @supercrazysane
      @supercrazysane Рік тому

      Can I ask if you have the standard risers with the fairing as I went to Triumph West London yesterday and they said they wouldn’t fit them as will result in limited full range of motion and will fail the MOT 🤷‍♂️

    • @chrisbolton2500
      @chrisbolton2500 Рік тому

      @@supercrazysane I was given the same nonsense, Steven.
      I did the fairing myself as the Triumph dealer wouldn't touch it. No issues whatsoever, and no impediment to the steering.
      You do get a handlebar lowering kit as part of the fairing kit, but I didn't want to sacrifice the comfort so I didn't bother with it.
      No problems with clearance or MOT test.

    • @supercrazysane
      @supercrazysane Рік тому

      @@chrisbolton2500 thank you, really helpful. He told me there is now way to fit it properly (ie fitted to the top of the yolk with the pin (underneath) lined up. He said anyone fitting must be lowering the clips or pulling them in to at an angle to avoid hitting the fairing 🤷‍♂️

    Groundhog Day Kate ? Wasn't this video already here yesterday, or did it get deleted for some reason ? That aside, as you said, an approximate 100 BHP is plenty, as long as an engine is torquey. I had a Yamaha XJ900 shaft drive in the 1980's which had 97 BHP and never felt lacking. The tyres were a bit skinny back then though.

    Great ride, but I can't stand seeing USD forks and gold ohlins on a retro - it just totally throws you out of the style I think. There are conventional fork and suspension setups that would have been nearly as good while looking far more authentic - I'm not sure why Triumph went with this setup.
