  • In one of the largest sexual abuse scandals in the United States, over 80,000 allegations of sexual assault have been made against the Boy Scouts of America.
Families are still grappling with the impact, including in the small town of Lonoke, Arkansas where a local scout leader and prominent community member used his position to abuse boys for years.
In SCOUT MASTER, Fault Lines investigates the horrific impact this abuse has had on survivors, specifically Heath Stocks - a former scout who was convicted of murdering his father, mother, and sister.

The emotional damage cannot be repair from being abused for years when you are 8 years old and afraid to tell another adult what happen in fear of being threaten by your Scout master. I get so sick to my stomach and try to block out the brutal pain of being ripped apart. Now that I'm in my sixties I still get nauseated. I take medicine to help with the stomach pain. There is no pain pill strong enough to take away all the years physical abuse the body can take, I have been on some of the strongest pain meds prescribed by doctors.
I have been to counseling for so many years, my parents thought I was about ready to have a mental break down. I have been in and out of psychiatric hospitals.

As part of a lawsuit, the BSA was ordered to release the records of abuse that were recorded nationwide.
The L.A. Times posted this database on their website for anyone to access.
I wonder if it's still there.

To say I was shocked to hear about this story is an understatement. As a non-American, all I hear in the news is the abuse in the Catholic Church. It alarms me to know that stories of children being abused within the Boy Scouts are still happening today, yet we, as a society, have come to accept it as some sort of acceptable byproduct of this org. Don't say no to scouting. The Abus happened decades ago and now it is very safe. Background checks for adults, kids have to read abuse pamphlets, as well as parents. If there is an adult alone with a scout they will be removed. Always have 2 or more scouts with an adult. Adults can't take kids to the bathroom. Another scout will.

I was a scout my entire childhood up until I made Eagle Scout. I can definitely say that from my perspective looking back, I had genuine scout masters and leaders who took an active role in sifting through the good and the bad. One minor rumor or impropriety and you were gone. That went for all. I consider myself lucky in this regard. I do know that the “perversion files” had documents on leaders and scoutmasters in troops in our council. I often worry about my friends who were in sister troops who may have been subjected to such cruelty. In retrospect I feel bad for the volunteers who took the opportunity to invest in us, it brought a lot of good out of so many young boys. But knowing now what I know, I cannot say that I support them as an institution going forward. It’s really sad and it’s abhorrent that the BSA DID NOTHING to save these kids.

Thank God we didn't have an abusive Leadership. I raised my son just South of Lonoke, Ar and considered letting him join the boy scouts but being me and my son hunted and fished so much along with riding four wheeler's, baseball and church activities he never had time. So proud of the boy who told and of his dad for fostering a relationship where he felt he could. Later in the vid we hear the man recounting how his abusive dad told him "do what he says, be grateful, don't ask questions." WRONG attitude. These predators target abuse victims & those without strong father figures in the home and this is exactly why. Parents, take note. Preds often hide behind trusted institutions like churches, summer camps, Boy/Girl Scouts, youth sports leagues & child talent agencies/performing arts orgs (dance, theatre, music, gymnastics, etc). Many "teen wilderness therapy" retreats house predators too. Nearly all sex abusers are surrounded by enablers who imparted them with their entitled attitude.

My sons were in the scouts and I NEVER let them be alone with any of them, even if it were only at the meetings. I was always there and participated in their activities. My heart hurts to see all of this and the BSA should be closed down. I am working with a few victims now as private clients and the trauma they are living with no amount of settlement can put a price tag on that.

But it shouldn't be closed down, because the Scouts BSA has already dealt with all of this. There are better rules now.

They didn't expose it because of Jack's father's position, power and money. Anyone who tried was threatened and made miserable. Jack was a monster from an early age and everyone knew it. The "wealthy" families chose to sweep it under the rug, ignore it or keep living in their fantasy world. The first time I met Jack I was a child and I saw the monster in him clearly. My grandparents told me he was a sick person and stay away from him. They didn't have to tell me because I saw it. Just can't believe people are so blind to reality. Rose colored glasses harm not help.

Excellent documentary highlighting the malevolence of sexual abuse. Watching this film, what shines out to me is toxic masculinity, an often maligned term. However, this boy that killed his family was a victim of this. All the men in his life abused him from his father to the detective that took his murders on face value and did not investigate his murders properly. My sympathy to all those boys is enormous and I hope that they find psychological mechanisms to put this mind control they experienced behind them. I hope this man whom killed his family can be let out of prison and live in peace. For the paedophile rapist, and Scouts of America I have nothing.

I was part of local scout section in Europe. It was boys and girls together, scout leaders were often school teachers. The amount of grooming of young girls I saw was alarming. Scout leaders in their 20s and 30s hanging out with girls 13-14 years old only to come out as their boyfriends once they reached age of consent at 16. The first time I got male attention was during overnight camp out - I was 13, he was twenty something junior leader. He was hitting on me and I was both surprised and flattered, the fact I knew him as cool guy and a figure to look up to set the tone for this as positive in my teenage brain. Nothing happened (mostly because my parents were quite loudly overprotective and I was known to have them up my business at all times) and I was later grateful for my reputation of 'daddy's and mommy's little girl'. Parents of one of the girls from another scout section found out she was 'in a relationship' with a scout leader when she turned 18 and moved out to his place overnight. They tried to intervene as she was still at school and they knew he must have been grooming her since she was 14-15. Hard to prove since she was completely brainwashed and started fabricating police reports against her parents, accusing them of harassment and theft. The scout leader would not let her out of his sight, dropping her off at school and keeping close tabs on her. It lasted few years, she finally understood how toxic it was in her twenties. She went back to her parents but legally there was nothing to be done at this point, with no laws in place to charge him. He kept being a scout leader through all of it. Even when it came out he had moved in a teenager he was taking care of. I was a kid back then but all of the other scout leaders knew what was going on.

Very good doco. My heart breaks for these boys, men and their families. There needs to be a legal remedy so that the leaders/administrators of Boy Scouts can be held personally liable. 82,000 plus people receiving a settlement. I understand they will receive about $6000 U.S each! That won't even put a dent in the cost of therapy. Plus I have heard elsewhere that Boy Scouts spent a fortune trying to limit the amount of the payout. Unconscionable.

Such a pity to see that scouts in America is such an awful organisation in letting such abuses take place. It really lets down the whole international scouting community, especially since Boy Scouts is the first thing that many think of when you tell them you do scouts, even in other countries. I have been a part of Scouts Australia for over 12 years and while similar allegations have been made here as well, the cases are so limited and hasn’t taken place (as far as I am aware) in over 10 years. Scout’s Australia is such an amazing organisation and I’ve learned so much while becoming the best version of myself. I really hope that scouts America can prevent such incidents from happening again and slandering the great name of scouts as a whole

Was joined with scouts for several months with my dad, I was six, first grade 1954. No problems. I was beaten on the playground school dozens of times under the principal's window at age seven at Drummond. I was in a stupor from this and the school decided I was retarded and should be put back two grades. Not long after entering the third grade at age eight in Three Forks, the principal put his older son up to killing me on the school ground, which he very nearly did. He was angry because I'd peed on the floor from fear carried over from the year before. I had a severe head injury and was unconscious for over a month. Three Forks was out, but I got a few weeks in at the one room school house in Logan where there was a big globe. I said the American continents looked like they were once a part of Europe-Africa, and the teacher said that was stupid idea and nobody believed any such thing (they didn't back then). So, I lost nearly my first three grades. In the fifth, age ten, I was hit with a large book by a high school jock (Randy Weaver, not the Ruby Ridge Randy) with the intent to kill me. I woke up in a pool of blood but recovered. There were more attempts on my life before I left Drummond at age 12. I worked at Big Sky High in Missoula from 1998-2004 as a net tech (I was an MCSE with 25 years professional computer work at the time). The net administrator would plant porn on teacher computers during the night, then bring the other net techs in to see what he'd "discovered" and afterward start whispering campaigns about the "bad" teachers watching porn with their work computers. This was actually a means to dodge his nightly watching of kiddie porn on the upstairs server. I knew this because of the trail of cookie files he left on the server, some of which I made copies of to show the police later since I was unable to discuss this with building administrators. He would sign in as various teachers, usually the girls' PE teacher Marti Leibenguth to watch "barely legal teen lesibian" porn, this while his daughter was in attendance. His protege and leader of the other net tech staff ceaselessly bragged about his porn and how it was specially "developed" for use in public schools, maybe like the middle school he was assigned to. It wasn't just porn of course, it was also sabotage and vandalizing of computers at night. This went on for five years until I couldn't bear it anymore. My complaints to OPI, the police, etc were never answered. My last post about this was deleted for violating community standards. I attended 22 different K12 public schools as a kid, graduated with top marks with a masters in soils-chemistry from MSU Bozeman, so I know what I'm talking about.

Also make schools aware of the Organization and the Child Safety Program so that if anyone ever touches a child in a sexual manner or the child thinks someone has made suggestive physically or verbal sexual advances on them that no matter what the child should tell their friends, other organization leaders, their Parents and their School teachers. There should also be a limit of 2-3 adults at any and all activities and Parents can be involved at any time. All adults involved in Leadership should have background checks. There should also be very harsh judicial sentences for anyone proven to have committed such a criminal act on a child.
