Welded a long bar onto the struts of a bolt on fender kit. Vibrations loosened the bolts causing play in the fender. Which then caught on the tire, rolling the fender like a burrito. Coming to a complete stop. It was on a surface street though. Thank God.
He is 100% right. Ended making a custom sissy bar for my live swing arm and after about 2 months the weld on the wing arm cracked. (Thank god I didn’t have a passenger in at the time) Hard tail is the way to go if you want a sissy bar
I bought a sissy bar (Chinese made-poor chrome job) off eBay. It came with stepped mounts that went over the fender side rails. I was fortunate to work at a company that had a plasma cutting table. I made a drawing with the outline, the center points and radius measurements for the rounded corners. I gave the drawing to a guy that wrote the programming for cutting parts on the plasma table, He later gave me the two side plates that went in between the side rail and the fender on my VLX 600. I drilled the holes and painted them gloss black and replaced the stepped mounting plates with the ones I had made. They look better than the original poorly chromed ones. As you pointed out, I wouldn't mount a sissy bar to a swing arm that was still spring and shock loaded. I need to have a rear seat for my wife and a sissy bar connected to a moving swing arm would beat her to death!
KamoKreature 12 respect that he gives worst case scenario because if he didn’t and there was a disaster with/without his parts who would you blame? It is definitely something to look into
Newbie here, used to working on cars, restored a 72 Chevelle and started riding a year ago. I ride a 2000 750 ACE and am trying to figure out where to mount a sissy bar, such as one of yours. Where is the safest place to mount it? Would love to mount it under the trim where the bolts are near the pillion seat, but unfortunately EVERY sissy bar with that setup is super ugly or doesn't fit my ride.
I got a sissy on a swing arm on a 750, small sissy with licence plate and rear light on it, nothing moves. i've attached the fender on the swing arm and nothing is weld, all attatched by screw and compression, home made ! nothing moved since 2 years now
So if I want a sissy bar and keep my swing arm, my best bet would be to weld the fender to the frame and weld the sissy bar to the frame as well? But then won’t my tire keep hitting my fender when I hit bumps?
There are ways to have a sissy bar/fender combo with a swing arm/live suspension; your fender must pivot in the manner as the swing arm and have enough room to not be drug down into your tire
I have a 05 shadow aero 750 my 2nd bike ever. I'm wanting to put a 83 soft tail on it, the one with the lip on the end of it I want it to still be able to ride two people will it still be strong enough to support the weight
It has always struck me as ill advised, to mount a sissy bar to a swingarm. And, at 45, with a well abused body already, it also strikes me as ill advised to delete suspension components on a motorcycle. Ditto, if we're talking about my wife's bike; she's 50. I've been looking at sissy bar options for her '83 VT500C. I figured that the best option would be to remove that grab-handle like piece behind the seat, and mount a sissy bar to the vacated mounting points. Shame nobody seems to have any direct fit bolt ons for that. Or, much else for that bike; not even the guys who want to specialize in Shadows 😐
@@TJBRUTALCUSTOMS what's different about it? If the fender is mounted at the front of the swingarm, and mounted to the axle plates via struts, how will it see any more vibration than a rigid? It could probably be argued that since a swingarm has suspension, the bumps would be much smoother. I mean, rigid bikes still hit bumps, right? A swingarm can basically be thought of as a tiny rigid frame connected to something else. Unless I'm missing something.
@@jamesalba5732 the fender mounted to a swingarm will vibrate worse than the hardtail frame because it is allowed to move independent from the rest of the frame. Force = mass * acceleration. A swingarm (ideally the only part of the bike moving due to the force generated by hitting a bump) weighs a lot less than a rigid frame with an engine mounted in it (since the whole bike will frame will move as a single mass on the hardtail). This means assuming you hit the same hole and generated the same upward force the swingarm would be accelerated in the upward direction quicker than a rigid frame. The affect would be vibration of higher amplitude and frequency as you travel down the road for anything mounted to the swingarm vs rigid frame. Edit: Just to be clear the rest of the frame which is isolated from the vibration of the swingarm (via shocks) will experience A LOT less vibration than a rigid frame which is why almost every land vehicle uses some sort of acceleration to isolate you from road vibration.
TJBRUTALCUSTOMS thanks I thought that’s what the answer would be I was hoping it would be different. Any suggestions for a good pillion seat for a hardtail then
Well I bought some 5/8 bar to make a big ass sissy bar for my swing arm😂 gonna throw shit in the wind and see what happens. Hope your not 100% on this one.
Thank you very much. I am here for the first time and you explained very well when you can install a sissy bar and when you can't
Precisely the answers I needed. Gonna fabricate a bar for my triumph cafe bike

Petroshmo did you use anything to keep it from loosening like loctite?

Hey tj could you tell me or do a part 2 to this video about how to install a sissy bar on a vt750 if it has had struts put on it!! Thanks!

So if you want a sissy bar for the passenger but want to keep your swing arm, where is the best mounting point for the sissy bar?
Thanks man you just saved me from disaster
This dude is full of shit there are thousands of bikes done this way with no issues

i weld the sissy bar in swingarm and the fender the fender he's weld on swingarm i keep the rear oem suspension nothing moving all good for 3 years
Sory for my Einglish

Dude. Answered my thoughts exactly thanks brother.
could you make a video showing how the parts you build would or would not work with an 1100
Thank you for the feedback. We will take that into consideration. 🍻
@@TJBRUTALCUSTOMS thank you it would be very helpful in deciding which bike i should buy as my first bike. as i am a big guy 6.0 ft / 350lbs

Can I heel toe shifter to a 2007 honda shadow 600vlx cycle

Is it possible to mount a hard tail soft tail fender on swing arm style bike without running problems ?
Is it safety to weld a frame to hard tail? What about vibrations? Will not break a junction?

There isn't a big enough market for them
TJ, do you sell a hardtail kit for the 750 Spirits?
Do you guys make these mono struts for vulcans? I love the idea of having a rigid bike but can't find much for bikes other than harleys
Thank you ! Very nice intro btw
Love the new intro.
Ditto.
I would think a rigid would vibrate just as much or more than a swing arm?

How would you bolt it on to the frame or it needs to be welded?
