Thanks for actually cranking that bad boy and not just saying what is supposed to be. I'm always questioning if I'm idle too low but I think I'm good phew
Thanks for the wild and crazy content! I’m riding a 86 VT1100C. It’s totally stock and I love it that way. I’m 70 years old and bought it 15 years ago from the original owner. My only complaint is the suspension. I replaced the rear shocks and put seals in the front. The back end either bottoms out or is way too stiff. What can I do? You are fucking nuts and it makes me feel young again watching you. Been riding since 1967. Started on a Yamaha YDT1 250 two stroke. Had a couple CB350’s. I’ve got my uncles bike he passed away 10 years ago. A 73 CB750 and I’m still working on It. I have 8 bikes and the 86 is the newest. Sorry for writing a book! Keep your wheels turning!
Bro, you don´t know me, but you did this video for me. I do/did this to my shadow, my mechanic told me to not to, and i listen to him. Now I know why; you explanation with your hands, and the oil not going up. You are the man!.
I remember pulling up to get gas with my shadow and there was 2 HD pumping gas and they looked at my bike and said it was not a Harley I just laughed because they were having trouble starting one and I told him that's why I bought a Honda and drove away 😂! Thanks for the video!
My grandpa told me that my bike idles at low rpm. I thought he was talking nonsense. But I increased RPM because he was mechanic when he was young. Glad I did, Thanks for a vid. Great sense of humor you got there. :D
Engines are built to rev. All of them. Let them do their thing. Don't torture them like that. Halfway up the tach (or halfway to redline, if it's not OEM) is just dandy for normal running (i.e. under load). And yeh, good idle rpm is vital. Not just for the Shadow.
Just dug my 87 VT700c out of the shed. One carb rebuild later and a good old tank cleaning and she runs great. Master/slave cylinder rebuild next and some tires, since I haven't driven it in over 20 years. 34k original miles.

I got a buddy I ride with who rides a Honda 1100 shadow sabre (I think it is called that,) anyways the twin crankpin 1100, with the cool flame cut looking solid wheels, and it is a great running, strong dependable rider, he runs all day with Big Twin Twin Cams and Milwaukee 8s, , and sometimes people give him crap because of the sound, to which he replies," that's why I ride with you clowns, so your bikes mask the sound of mine when we're sitting idling at the light"
Loved it. I have a 1994 VT1100, my Brother Vince gave me 13 years ago. Still runs great. My only issue is my temp light comes on intermittently. Though its not running hot and the fan cycles. Happy 4th of July from The Villages Florida!
I now that it's not a Shadow, but don't forget about the VTX 1300...it has a single-pin crank, and it's idle speed is recommended at 900rpm (+/- 100), so it can get pretty close to that po-ta-to cadence without harming the engine.
My pops had a dyno tuned 1300C that had a hyper charger and Vance and Hines pipes and that bike was straight nasty sounding it was awesome he put 40k miles on it
I bought an immaculate 2002 VTX 1800R last year, I wanted a sabre 1100 but the VTX was a bargain. The build quality of the Honda is excellent. Former 3-time big twin shovelhead owner and never going back to H-D.
Great video! Just took my honda shadow ace to a shop for starter issues and when I got her back, they tuned the idle way down just like shown here. No idea why they chose to do so, but I'm a new rider and didn't question it much, just knew it was different. This video cleared things up tremendously!
Dude, that's the best description of the difference between a dual and single pin crank I've seen. 👍 My Fury 1300 and my wife's 2002 Spirit 750 are single pin cranks but Honda is smart enough to balance them. They sound good, but they don't shake-rattle-and... fall the fk apart.
Duuuuude! This is a great help. The only time I sent my shadow 600, my first motorcycle, to a "professional" mechanic for a fork seals change and a carburetor cleaning, when I picked it up (after almost 3 months) he said "how do you like it to sound ?kinda HD" and he lowered down the idle to a "pop po po pop", a bit more and the bike stops.
@@LK-vb2pl With pressured air? Nope, but he did that wrong too... I had to come back after a month because it was too soft and he wanted to charge me for something he did wrong. @LK-vb2pl Yeah you're right! After watching almost all videos and read a lot from TJ's website, I've learnt a lot about the Shadows. Never thought of that, before. Interesting point. I'd always set the idle at recommended and never tried to get the lowest idle possible, but I knew a few guys who did. I wonder how their engines got on.
Thanks for the video I’m a new shadow 750 aero owner. It has a tach and I’m guilty of dropping the idle for the sound. That will no longer be the case. Bringing it up to proper idle speed asap.
The same lack of oil to the "top" [heads at the same elevation as the crank] end happens with the old BMW airheads. There used to be a strange fetish among airhead owners to get the idle as low as possible. Because of the opposed cylinders and a heavy flywheel they would still run pretty smoothly at 800 rpm. At that slow rate, oil pressure was low and the big oil users like bearings used all the pressure before any oil could get to the "top" end or the timing chain. Mysterious valve train and timing chain damage happened. So the low idle problem is more about crank and cam bearings using all the oil rather than, as in the case of the Shadow, the heads being way above the oil pump. [Elevation seems to really make no difference; it's all about oil volume]. Nice video, Hoss!
Awesome work dude. You are brilliant with Honda's. As soon as you get stuff in stock for the Aero line I will definitely be ordering more stuff. Velocity stack set up and carburetor stuff.
Similar for Harley’s, too. Too many riders turn the idle down so much that the oil pumps pressure is too low to move oil around. Plus, when idles are too low, don’t forget the engine needs to get up to enuf power to get going with your buds. The engine speed needed to even let the clutch out needs to get up way over the potato idle. My big twin idle is recommended at 950-1000 rpm from a fully hottened up engine. I will take it for a half hour toot and then adjust my idle as needed to set it.

great video as always. i have been trying to find a way of doing this as need a rev counter for the reason. when is "how to add a fuel light to your shadow" video coming ????? as you never miss a little light till you don't have one
Is this mostly a problem in California heat? Ive built many engines, car and bike and I get oil to the top of the engine cranking over with the starter which is obviously a much lower rpm than any idle speed.
nice video bro!! 👌🏾 I live in Belgium and i have a Honda Shadow 1100 ace from 1997 but i don't think that my bike sounds like a Harley with the single crank pin engine but to be honest i don't really care. because i know it's a Honda. 😁 i do find it's hard to find parts here in Europe. Like i am searching for fork covers to make the bike look a bit better. but like i said, it's hard to find them parts.
Great video, I have a question though... I have an 86 shadow vt1100, my manual says 1000 rpm +/- 100 but im pretty sure it is dual pin (please correct me if im wrong), what's up with that? I honestly think it sounds better at a higher idle.
Don't have a Shadow, but this video made me really interested in having proper idle speed for shadows. By the way , when going up the rev range from 900 to 1200 the sound changes significantly, can the sound itself be used to tune the idle speed?
Dame with harleys,i built a chopper with a harley motor not tach, wanted to know how many rpms it was running found these, they work awsome,i got mine like 3 years ago, know your hearing alot about themonky thing is you cant turn them off but they last a long time.

Similar for Harley’s, too. Too many riders turn the idle down so much that the oil pumps pressure is too low to move oil around. Plus, when idles are too low, don’t forget the engine needs to get up to enuf power to get going with your buds. That's one reason I want a Shadow is for the crank setup. I thought they stopped making them like that in like the 90s.
great video as always. i have been trying to find a way of doing this as need a rev counter for the reason. when is "how to add a fuel light to your shadow" video coming ????? as you never miss a little light till you don't have one
Sight gauges!!!
Is this mostly a problem in California heat? Ive built many engines, car and bike and I get oil to the top of the engine cranking over with the starter which is obviously a much lower rpm than any idle speed.
Wonder if you can somehow reroute oil to the heads and keep the low rpm’s low and still get oil
no. honda had external oil lines on the 88 VT600, but realized this didnt do jack and so removed them for 89.
nice video bro!! 👌🏾
I live in Belgium and i have a Honda Shadow 1100 ace from 1997 but i don't think that my bike sounds like a Harley with the single crank pin engine but to be honest i don't really care.
because i know it's a Honda. 😁
i do find it's hard to find parts here in Europe.
Like i am searching for fork covers to make the bike look a bit better.
but like i said, it's hard to find them parts.
Thanks! 👍
Great video, I have a question though... I have an 86 shadow vt1100, my manual says 1000 rpm +/- 100 but im pretty sure it is dual pin (please correct me if im wrong), what's up with that? I honestly think it sounds better at a higher idle.
1K is correct.
Thanks, you showed me a lot. I appreciate you brother…
🍻
Don't have a Shadow, but this video made me really interested in having proper idle speed for shadows. By the way , when going up the rev range from 900 to 1200 the sound changes significantly, can the sound itself be used to tune the idle speed?
if youve done it for 17 years, you can kinda get close, but even I prefer to use a tool to get it right.
I had no idea the low idle would short the oil to the heads. Thanks.
🍻
Thank you for the information. I had mine turned way too low. Luckily, I have not put a bunch of miles on it since turning it down.
Nice
@@TJBRUTALCUSTOMS I don’t have an electronic tachometer. Could I use my electrical tester to set my RPMs?
@@boomerang32 Not sure never did it,
@@TJBRUTALCUSTOMS OK thanks I’ll give it a try cause it’s an automotive electrical tester. It shows RPMs I think.
@@boomerang32 siiick
I had an issue with this once when I let mine idle to long. Was a temporary problem thank God.
👍
This video just made my 2003 Honda shadow 750 ace increase in value.
100%
Thanks
🍻
If it makes you happy it's right for you.
Thanks for your time🤘🏻
Thank you fir watching and commenting!!! 🍻🍻

Imines kinda beat up but it works!!! Finally got around to making a video!!! Thanks for watching!!
