I was under the impression we had to cover our big leaf hydrangea in the winter. It’s not much larger than your Sky View macro. I’ve been wrapping it with burlap for the past few years but is it really necessary? I’m in zone 6a here in Mid MI. Any advice would be appreciated Corey 🍁🍂
I’ve heard of people wrapping them in burlap or creating a chicken wire cage and filling it full of leaves to help if it’s in a borderline zone… or if you’re trying to grow it in a zone lower than it should be. If I was in zone 6 with a Sky View, I would leave it. Worst case, some of the early buds would get nipped.
Can you get compost from your city in the spring? I have heard of some cities that take your yard waste and let you have free compost. How nice that would be.
I’m not sure if they offer it. The only problem with “free” compost is that sometimes is not free of seeds and that can leave you with things you didn’t want in the garden.
Hi Cory 😊 I had everything ready for winter, storage, pruning, not pruning etc. We’ve had a few small frosts and my roses are doing great tolerating it but my big leaf hydrangeas “melted” 😮 Do I do anything for them? (I have pink lace cap and a pink mop head ) My Invincible Ruby is doing fine, bragging that Jack Frost can’t touch her 🤷🏼♀️”come at me bro”. I’m so worried right now. It’s a weird fall here in NB Canada. Halloween night at 3 am was plus 19 C (66) where as two days before it was cold enough to have a fire on. My poor plants 😢 Thanks for any advice you may have
@@bonniemccormack1361 I wouldn’t worry about the big leaf hydrangea. They often wait until spring to drop their leaves - even after they’re spent. We’ve been having the same temperature ups and downs here.
@@UpNorthGardenMIoh good. I was so pleased being ready on time because working nights makes it hard lol thanks for putting my mind at ease and as always, thanks for sharing your knowledge 😊
Thank you for taking the stress out of hydrangea trimming. I enjoy your videos and have learned so much. Dawn (Southern Ontario Zone 6).
Hi Corey, it will be interesting to see how that sidewalk strip looks next spring! Love the “ no fear” hydrangea trimming! Zone3 Manitoba 🇨🇦👏🍁
Your yard is looking great, especially that strip by the sidewalk.
The real test will be how everything makes it through the winter ❤️
Well, was going to wait on my limelight but heading out now to cut back.
I just cut mine back to being in Michigan if you leave the bloom on they tend to be heavy with the wet snow
Yes, I cut the blooms off too due to snow. Zone3 Manitoba 🇨🇦
