I bought a 99 Corolla for $1,500.00. Someone hit it in an icy parking lot damaging every single panel and the insurance company totaled it giving me $4,000.00. Best investment I ever made.

Spenser B someone needs to hit my Camry so I can get 10,000$. I don’t want that to happen but I know I will probably twice as much for what it’s worth if the car were to ever get totaled. I want a newer Camry I have a 2010 LE with 180,000 miles and could use a new one. My current one is in good shape and everything but it’s a little old need something newer.

When I was 18 I borrowed my friends Corolla to take my girlfriend to Steak N Shake on Christmas Eve to visit my friend, the cook. At the time I didnt have a license and my friends dad found out about it, got pissed and then made me bring the car back about 30 minutes into our "date"

    • @Immortalkalashnikov

Hell no. My first car was a 97 Pontiac Bonneville out of high school and it was shit. I had it for 4 years and every year there was at least one major breakdown which left me stranded on the road. The first breakdown was with the upper intake gasket which flooded the engine with coolant. I sold that piece of shit then bought a 99 Corolla. It has 200,000 miles and has performed flawlessly. The only "major" repairs i've had to do is change the valve cover gasket and wheel bearing. Now I am retiring it because I am going to get a Tacoma pretty soon. I will never get anything that isn't Toyota ever again. They just work.

I remember buying a half ounce of weed every week in my old dealers 99 corolla when I was still in high school. The distinct ticking of a thoroughly neglected engine could be heard a few blocks away, and that was the sound of pure dank kush arriving after a hard day of doing oil changes at a lube shop. Hearing that sound would always put a smile on my face, as I turned towards it seeing large clouds of smoke pouring out of the windows of that piece of shit barreling down the street going 30 over the limit. He would slam on his brakes the car literally screeching to a halt, and I would get in the back seat as most of the time his buddy 'Chet' would be ripping a fat bong rip in the passenger seat I'd hand him the money and he'd hand me a bag that I worked oh so hard for the mutual trust between our stoned asses was unheard of as most other dealers were scummy bastards that would rob you the first chance they got. I'd be lying if I said I remember those times fondly, because I really don't remember much of it as I was high nearly 24/7 looking back I see how wildly impulsive, and irresponsible my life was at that time, and it really makes me think about the current state of my life, and how things could have been much worse... All these memories, and self reflection over watching a video review on a fucking corolla.

Yes the car is boring, but I know this car will get me from point A to point b no matter how long the trips is, and in a comfortable manner. I can't do that with newer car I currently own. A small chicken shit would trigger my OCD. Not with this car. Need a alignment? I'll do it when I feel like it. I dint something? Tis but a scratch. Hell, I don't even have a Corolla, and I have memories. I saw a dude with a pocket-pipe trying to light a bowl of weed while driving 75 on the freeway in one of these babies - Not sure if he had too much already, or not enough, but the driver-side window was rolled down and blowing the flame of the lighter out and he didn't realise that was the issue. I was laughing so hard I could barely see thru the tears! Impressive fore-arm strength tho.

Yeah that actually may have been my father and that is not a joke or a lie in any way. He had a 98 he got from a old lady down the street. It was basically perfect besides paint peel. Then someone SMASHED it all to hell one day when he was working at someone’s house. Moved the car almost 600 feet down the road with the back left of the car completly pancaked. The dude drove off and my dad only had liability insurance, and basically no money at that time for a new car. He did what he could to fix the body, which was honestly a lot. Made himself a tail light and got it to pass inspection. Then I got it for cheap having gotten it running after replacing ignition coils, now it’s in my good friends hands until he gets back on his feet. It’s really like a hard times helper more than a car. It still runs no problem besides being very very ugly. 200k and counting!

I've got a 99 VE automatic 1.8l with 356k kms on it, drove 200kms doing 140kmph on the highway, noticed the engine knocking slightly when i was nearly back home, checked oil even though i just dumped almost 2 litres in not even a month before knowing it burns a lot. Not a single drop of oil on the stick on level ground or angled to front or back. literally couldn't find any oil with it parked on the road flat, backed it nose down or front in nose up. It took another 3 litres, got some full synthetic high mileage to help clean it up a bit and stop burning but knocking went away and everything is fine. it has had 2 oil changes since 250k... I just keep pouring more in.... thing is invincible. I'm always revving to max rpms and slamming it into first until i'm bumping off rev limit again and stupid shit like that all the time, including on the highway that day. If it was anything but a toyota the engine would have fucking welded itself into a block of metal.

Amen man. These things are bullet proof. Screw anyone that says otherwise. My 2000 is at 210k and still has no oil burning issues. One day I am gonna get a manual Corolla just to beat on and have fun like you do haha.

Evan93 Funny thing is that mines an automatic... I just pretend its a standard. I'm actually just putting it in neutral then slamming it into "L" which is 1st gear... hahahaha. I don't know how the tranny hasn't blown up. My oil issue has gotten so much worse, I'm putting in a gallon (4.4 Litres) for every tank of gas these days but it was a lot worse, I've got some nasty videos of oil POURING out of my exhaust while revving in park (Yes i've confirmed it's oil). Guess that's why my catalytic converter was fucked, so I just gutted it out entirely and replaced the valve cover gasket. Very little oil makes it through my exhaust now but it still goes through a big jug of oil every other gas fillup. I don't mind though, car is fun as fuck and now I'm just a spark plug in the exhaust away from shooting flames in my COROLLA... you should hear this thing pop gas in the tailpipe! Gas mileage got even better from gutting out the cat as well.

Ya know, I've been thinking about doing this for a while because of how big a joke my car has been with my friends and I. I've got videos of revving the shit out of it while oil spraying and gas BAP BAP BAPPing out of the exhaust (with slow mo!), from gutting out the catalytic converter, from jumping it over some NASTY train tracks, even losing half a tank of gas in about 10 kilometers over 15 minutes and discovering it's my fuel injectors pouring fuel all over my engine and battery and alternator..... and then replacing the o rings only 5 minutes before i start work and making it only 3 minutes late... and much more, all documented! Think you have inspired me to do so. I will update you should I find the time and effort!

I own a 1998 "Chevy" Prizm, 253K and counting, 1.8L manual shift. Meticulous maintenance. Car is no slouch even to this day, gets zero respect and will embarrass half the cars on the road that think they are quick. Best car I have ever owned-no contest. A/C still blows cold too.
Corolla's are the epitome of mass production assembly line masterpieces.

  • @TheMostwanted5

My Corolla story. I own a virtually identical 99 Corolla as the one in the review, except this one has more interior bits than my car came with. I bought it for 500 back in 2020 and as I found out it needed A LOT of work. Head gasket failure, o2 upstream failure, clogged catalytic converter, the aforementioned parking light issue, warped rotors up front, missing sway bar links, busted shocks, burnt out window motors up front. If it had been any other time I would of junked it but the DMV was booked for 6 months because of COVID so it was either eat the repair cost or sell the car, buy something else and just HOPE I don't get pulled over. Drove it for two months with the head gasket issue (Kids don't do this, but if you do just keep the 5qt jug in the backseat). So I repaired what I could afford and just sent it, learned how to wrench and as it turned out, this car is a fighter. I accidentally ran this car for 50miles on the highway with a quart of oil in the 1ZZ (I noticed the engine was chattier than usual), top 'er off and kept going, that was a year ago. The car currently sits at 284,540miles as of this comment and I have had no issues from it save for a loose battery terminal that gave me a heart attack once. Body is in good condition, paint is sunbaked because it was an El Paso car for 3/4th of it's life but outside of a cracked bumper it's great. Coming from MI you either buy domestic or you're looked at weird but the Corolla is a car everyone says "That's a good car." And as an owner the legend is true, I want to fully restore the car because it's been good to me. The headliner is falling apart because the car is almost as old as me and all my lower dash pieces were missing but all in all, amazing car, amazing in the sense of it works, all the time, every time. Even after a week of sitting the MI winter cold, it started. It will always be my go to recommendation and I don't plan on letting it go. Good job Toyota, you've kept me employed because of this car.

I currently own a tan 99 corolla sith 200k on it. Also owned tan 2002 and 2001 corollas. The 2001 was a manual and i never should have sold it. Great cars - my 02 was totaled twice by insurance but we kept it and fixed it up. Ended up selling it and i still see it on the road. Took my 99 on a 160 mile drive snd it did 90mph on the highway with no issues

Hi. I found what I think is a rare opportunity but not sure if worth the money with inflation and all…. I found a 1999 Corolla with 40K original miles. Clean carfax. Clean title. I went to see it. It is in excellent condition. Does have some rust on the bottom. It is literally a time capsule. They want $8k… is it worth it do you think?

Got an 06 corolla for $2300. It’s an LE old lady edition. Silver paint, silver wheel covers, faux wood grain interior. It had 95k on the odometer when I got it. Been driving it for a loooong time now. I got it to commute in because my other car is a built out 4Runner that gets like 18 MPG on a good day. My average in the Corolla is like 31 MPG. Was expecting to have gotten rid of it by now. It’s still going.

My first car was a 99 Corolla got it for 1,000$ off an Asian dude at 7-11 from my first check was just 18 and I loved it drove her every day called her “Tuna”cause it had this old tuna smell when I got her the smell went away but the old person smell stayed like nostalgia to my nose. It would shake at 85 mph like a carnaval ride but I loved it. Took my ex the women I loved on that car for one last time let her even drive it. 99 Corolla Tuna your prob still running rn with 300,000 miles till this day with that dent I left from hitting my managers civic and the chipped painting on the hood. I got a 2001 Corolla S. It's an 8th gen like this one. But with foglights, an all black interior, black and red gauge cluster, which shows the RPMs (that go to 8000 for some reason), and an outside temperature meter. It also has an extra 120 watt cig litter near the E-Brake and a thinner "sporty looking" stearing wheel, and 15inch Toyota alloy wheels.
It's honestly a pretty sexy looking little car. I was thinking of trashing it, since it's pushing 300,000 and the reverse is going out. But I think I might just dump a new engine in it and make it a sleeper.
