We just finished a round trip from Florida to Pennsylvania and back in less than two days driving a 2019 Isuzu XD Turbo diesel. Ours was not governed and would cruise at 80mph plus if needed. If you want to get somewhere fast, then this is a great choice.
I just rented a Hino 16ft box truck. It’s got a 5cyl turbo diesel, limited to 74mph. It’s very peppy, fun to drive. Diesel noise is fantastic, and bouncing out of your seat on bumpy roads is hilarious. I believe the rental companies de-tune them and limit their top speed for obvious reasons. If you can get one without the restrictions, they’d be a great truck to have.
I’ve owned and driven NPR’s and Fuso’s. The Fuso chassis is superior, much better driving and riding dynamics. And not nearly as sketchy when the road surface wants to toss you around, and all around handles better. Brakes are also much better on the Fuso. Had a rental NPR after driving my Fuso a couple of years, and had a Oh crap moment pulling up to a stoplight when first driving it. Didn’t know if I was gonna stop in time. That was a gas NPR, so I’m sure the diesel exhaust brake helps. But regular brakes comparison isn’t close. Disappointed Fuso is pulling out of the US, but I guess they just didn’t have the sales to justify staying. Now every brand cab over is going to be an Isuzu clone. Even heard Hino got in emissions trouble and is going to switch to an Isuzu clone for that class truck. But Fuso’s worst problem was that their diesel emissions system are a nightmare for repairs. I personally just traded in my diesel Fuso for a gas one. Couldn’t stomach any more emissions repairs (plus tow and rental truck costs - goes into limp mode and dealer is always backlogged), and wanted to get a gas one before they’re gone. The last 2 years I spent more in emissions repairs than my fuel savings vs gas (drive 20k miles a year). Truck only had 85k miles, but emissions warranty ends at 50k. 10 mpg Fuso diesel, 7 mpg NPR gas is what I have averaged. Diesel is usually about 40-50 cents more a gallon near me. Plus oil changes (with fuel filter) are twice as much on diesel, and have to change the PCV filter regularly. And the Fuso 3.0 turbo diesel is underpowered for hilly freeway speeds. Fuso gas engine is the same 6.0 GM as Isuzu. Chassis is made by Freightliner. Allison 1000 transmission (5 year unlimited mile warranty). Superior brakes. Mine is a FE180 (Class 5 - 17,995 GVWR). 10 free oil changes and owned by Daimler so all warranties honored and dealer service available.
I drive a 2023 NPR HD with the new 6.6L gas and I love it. For 2023 they now have disk brakes front and rear and changed the interior a bit. I've never driven a Fuso so I can't speak on the driving dynamics, but I don't think it wins in the brake department anymore considering the Fuso only came with rear drums.

I ordered one currently in production for my daily driver and to pull my boat 2.5 ton. I'm intending to put a small canopy on the back for camping too.
How does the emission system hold up on the diesel. That seems to be a common theme in the gas vs diesel debate for almost all manufacturers. Emissions seem to be making it harder and harder to justify diesel unless you are driving OTR type miles and really racking them up where the fuel savings really compounds, or hauling extremely heavy loads where the available gas engine just isn’t powerful enough. When you factor in the extra cost per gallon of fuel, extra maintenance costs, higher initial purchase price, and the wild card is emission repairs. For a lot of people they just don’t drive enough miles or haul heavy enough loads to be able justify diesel or make it a financially beneficial trade-off. And in this truck specifically, if it does require a pile of money to be thrown at emissions to see the engine through its entire life. You could probably replace the 6.0 gas when it dies for cheaper than all the emission repair bills, and get the same or more miles out of 2 gas engines for less money. 300k miles on a Diesel engine might be easy, but most diesel emission systems are going to need a lot of attention (if not completely replaced) in that time.
It's a shortened 6hk1 which displaces like 7.3 litres and is used in 15 ton trucks. Capacity matters alot more than number of cylinders. Those are 4 big bangs every revolution.
I'm planning a build on a 1983 Isuzu Elf and I'm gonna try and swap the engine from this into it. The 3.3L 4BC2 in the Elf makes less than 100hp and makes just under 280ft.lbs. hopefully the 4HK1-TCC will 1, fit, and 2, not rip the old Elf in half.
I have tried to get a 268A out on Demo but the dealer just fell through. I would like to give one a try,as its practically the only truck I am missing on my channel besides the PACCAR products! The NPRs are tiny, but they always impress me with with what they can do. Thanks for watching!
Sounds like a Detroit DD5 but with a better turbo whistle and more grunt. One of the best sounding 4 cylinder diesel engines. I driven a HINO with a j08E governed at 74 mph but those Japanese diesels are crazy reliable. If you think Cummins is the most reliable, Isuzu and Toyota Group will prove you wrong. School buses in Japan are powered by a 4-ish liter 4-cylinder diesel engine and they are faster than American school buses and look nicer too.
Isuzu is part of creating 6.6 Duramax diesel Engine LB7, LLY, LBZ, LMM, LML, L5P. also the partnership with General Motors & Isuzu. Which have higher resale value din any other diesel pickups and it's because of the Duramax engine 6.6 which have very longevity . I want to see Isuzu return to back US market

These things look like a blast to drive. I loved driving the uhaul when moving around Texas, I was just wondering where someone would go or what I'd need to be able to drive one of these? No CDL needed as it's under 26,000 correct?
This truck isn't even close to needing a CDL. All the trucks on my channel do not need a CDL! You just need to go to your local Ryder center and rent one. Be forewarned though Ryder has recently implemented a rule were the deposit it a week of rental and insurance, so it will be in excess of $1,000 but you will get that back. Otherwise, they are fun to drive, definitely a different driving experience
I rented one of these from Budget a few years ago. I think it was meant only for their business clients but it was the only truck they had so I got it. LOVED it! Easy to drive and that particular one also had a power lift on the back so it made loading and unloading a breeze. Only thing I didn't like was that the cab was so bouncy, it makes your foot wiggle up and down on the gas pedal.

My 2013 NQR is approaching 19,000 hours of total run time which equates to 665,000 miles of wear on the engine, AC, emissions, etc. and it runs like a champ!! It idles all day most of the summer which is the reason for it having so many hours. It is also loaded pretty heavy 100% of the time.
The American Airlines Ground Equipment shop uses these Isuzus and they regularly last them 35,000-40,000 hours before needing any major overhauls. That comes out to 1,225,000-1,400,000 miles on everything.
In India, in a bigger truck, we get a 3 litre engine, but looking after American standards, we all know the trucks like these has 7 litres Godzilla V8.

@@crazyjdkid I didn't know that this small car driver's license could drive this type of truck. Thank you so much
@@crazyjdkid Thats crazy! Just a C class license wow
we live in a time where owning a diesel truck is a huge pain in the ass and gas engines are competent enough to compete. it's sad.
Nice video
Thanks Raj! I appreciate the support!
Cool video 😎
Can u could u do a review on the NEW Isuzu gas engine NRR 6.0L
Thanks
Very very popular in australia
Can you buy one of these just for private use?
Always.
Very nice truck very fast
Buddy said a 5.2L INLINE 4 is a tiny engine.....
In India, in a bigger truck, we get a 3 litre engine, but looking after American standards, we all know the trucks like these has 7 litres Godzilla V8.
@@Asteroid--07 I still think its crazy he said a 5.2 inline 4 is small. that's over a liter per cylinder
@@tyler93539 ig you're not an American bcz their commuter buses have 8 litres inline 6 and long distance buses have more than 13litres inline 6.
Just recovered from the seizure the camera gave me. Damn! I literally had to stop watching and only listen. Good information, but...
Thanks for watching!
V4 5.2L you said what about MPG
Its an I4, and I got about 12 mpg from city driving!
@@crazyjdkid not bad thanks friend
No problem! I have a full review video of this truck on my channel as well if you would like more information!

@@crazyjdkid hi
Am tryin to find info on these trucks that are 4wd
Any video links pls
Hino would be neat to see
I agree man! Here's the thing, I'm waiting on the Hino corporate demonstrator that's high spec'd to be available! They have offered it for our videos, but it's used by large companies looking to purchase them and I need to snag it between uses. I'll have a Hino Rep ride with us as well. Im in line for it, so don't worry I have not forgot about the Hino request!
@@crazyjdkid Status now?
I drive an Isuzu LT434P Euro 5 that's based on N series Isuzus and the AMT is pure rubbish. The Aisin transmission seems more smooth and reliable
It was a pretty good transmission , nothing beats an Allison though.
@@crazyjdkid Indeed. Allison transmissions are the best. Sadly the Allison is only available for the Euro 6 versions of the LT434P. The Euro 5 was a complete failure
Nissan cabstar or Renault Maxity 2.5 are more comfortable and faster than the Isuzu .Give it a try and reply me
Those trucks are not available in the US. As far as cab overs go all we have is Izusu, Hino, UD and Fuso. The later 3 cabovers aren't too common.
@@crazyjdkid UD is Nissan
Same engine in those little weird looking fedex/ups delivery trucks
We have a 2017 with a 18" steak body with a lift gate and overhead rack to accomidate 20' sticks of pipe. Its our "downtown" truck. It rides like crap, struggles to get on the highway but to its credit...it runs and runs. Less issyes than the 28' International 4300s we have by far that have less miles
Definitely reliable! No doubt!
Isuzu ❤
I wanna swap my 05 silverado with this engine
Your video subject was fine... holding the camera, swinging it back-and-forth as much as you did... Was it mounted on your head ..? I don’t know, it got me dizzy I couldn’t watch More than four minutes... LoL
Yes! The camera was mounted to my head. Ill see about improving that vefore the next video?
4HK1 engine
Lots of practicality but sounds like a toyota corolla until the engine fan kicks on
You ever seen a Corolla with a 5.2L diesel lol? It honestly sounds like a tractor in real life!
crazyjdkid lmao yeah I’ve seen many in my area
@@crazyjdkidIt really does sound like it when you get on the gas.
Stiedemann Dale
E. ATL!
Yes! East ATL indeed!
Pretty sure it's a 5cyl , I could be wrong lol
Its a 4 Cylinder.
Its quite
*DURAMAX AIN'T AMERICAN*
This engine doesn't have too much to do with the Duramax. This engine is a bit more robust and has a longer design life the the 6.6L Duramax.
@@crazyjdkid oh Duramax is still ISUZU SOOOO powerstroke and Cummins is best
They all have their ups and downs! Powerstroke is built in Mexico, that doesnt seem to bother you?
Nice!
@@jshcrtr12 Thanks! I dont like Atlanta lol
Hino has poor brakes
I only gave it thumbs down for the fact those trucks suck. I would not go long distance in one. It bad if you are tall. I'll agree plenty of power. In town delivery only.
Thanks for the feedback! Keep in mind the thumbs up/thumbs down is for the video and not the truck!
My comment is based on experience. With a older model. Maybe newer are better? I prefer a full size truck. Power. Comphort. Ability.
@@alexmalm6406 yes! I agree! I was just saying when you thumbs down the vid it hurts video views!
Bro I'm tall and I have no problem sitting in one.
