Ok so YOU NEED to be yourself. From my personal experience I’m only 15 but been through a lot I came out as gay in 6th grade back then people were mean and I was being sexually harassed but some people were accepting. I thought I had to hide my self away like a freak show DO not put ur self through the pain I went through. If you don’t open up and be your self when you get hurt it will hurt even more than like being a fake person. So don’t be ashamed there’s tons of professionals playing all kinds of stuff.

I don’t understand with the music industry the way it is why game and soundtrack music isn’t taken seriously by music professionals when this is actually an arena musicians can make money in! Classical training is wonderful but we have to address other avenues for work! After college I played in rock bands. I made money there and never did in the classical world. I think it’s important to explore.

Would love to have a nice long conversation with the flute prof who said "Video game music is not real music".

Yeah, sigh. Since this was a long time ago, I wouldn't be surprised if they changed their mind now! However, I do recognize that I'm still dealing with the damage that was done with that comment, even if they didn't mean it maliciously. It was said in a very offhanded way, so I don't think they were thinking too hard about it, and I honestly no longer think they meant to offend. :)

What an amazing experience for you!! I am glad you took the time to reflect and share this. I think we all have the thing about “proving” ourselves. But if you think about it, what is the goal or the end point? Or at what point you would feel that you proved yourself? I think that cycle would never end. So you don’t necessarily need to stress about proving anything. Just be yourself, enjoy the journey and the moment. I think that when you are honest and give feedback people will appreciate and learn what you have to say and share. It’s the perspective as a musician that you are providing and that’s the learning for everyone ❤ good work 👏🏻

Thank you so much! Yeah, I completely agree on the neverending cycle of trying to prove yourself. I'm so glad I broke out of it!! Hoping that sharing my experience can help others break out of it too 😊

I've really missed this!! It feels like ages since I watched one of your "what I learned from going through X" videos. It was almost funny when you were weighing options and proposed that "I could ruin my reputation by being myself." It sounds like you went in concerned with an imagined need to exude the all-knowing air of a teacher. It's a huge life lesson that having outside interests makes us better rounded and more relatable, and still having our own questions even as teachers and leaders makes us fresher and more effective in those positions. Sounds like you connected really well with your students, and while teaching them, you learned a ton yourself, which I think is how it's supposed to work.

Joanna, please look at any and all of these experiences as just a new and different way of "grinding Rep and doing dailies."
New things come with each day, some with repetitive grinding, some with new challenges, some with ways to increase skills and confidence, and in all ways to build upon everything which is good and glorious within you.
Life challenges face us all constantly, but with your inherent kindness and consideration, you will always be shining with your inner artistry and abilities in sharing your skills and love of the world.
Thank you for this very thoughtful video. 🌹🌺🌷

I went to Interharmony for two summers with my teacher. Best summers of my life! I was so chill in regards to what I expected from my coaches. It's kinda rough teaching there. Classes start the following day after you get there so you're jetlagged, and it's Italy in summer so you're basically being broiled. Even my teacher thought it was a lot!

Yet again, I’m so sorry for the loss of your grandma and your husband Grandma. It’s definitely hard when you lose a grandparent. I have been there myself it’s tough, but we gotta stay strong.

Forming a connection with you and talking with you this summer fixed my practicing problems and a lot of the mental issues I face in music. I can’t thank you enough. Just know I think about you and this trip daily ❤️❤️❤️

There's a quote from Beverly Sills, one of the greatest coloratura sopranos of the 20th century, that addresses this: "Everything you need you already have. You are complete right now, you are a whole, total person, not an apprentice person on the way to someplace else. Your completeness must be understood by you and experienced in your thoughts as your own personal reality." (ETA: Just found out this is a misattribution; it's actually by a dude named Wayne Dyer.)

Sorry -- Sills is a font of quotes on this topic. With her, it was her kids' problems and not her husband's, but here's another one that I think applies given your husband's issues: "I needed to sing - desperately. My voice poured out more easily because I was no longer singing for anyone's approval; I was beyond caring about the public's reaction, I just wanted to enjoy myself. … I had found a kind of serenity, a new maturity, as a result of my childrens' problems."

    Loved the video!
How did you find Italy, the country? What did you eat/drink that was amazing? Did you find that you could eat/drink things that you can’t in the US? (I’ve heard stories of people being able to drink the cow’s milk and eat the cheese and wheat…)

I'm one of those people!!! I can have all the dairy I want there and I don't get bloated!!!!! The coffee and gelato were ON ANOTHER LEVEL. And we had homemade meals made by the hotel staff every day... the most amazing pasta I ever had!!! 🤤 The country was beautiful and everyone was so lovely and nice!!!

That was unbelievably lovely! Holy omg, so many things I could say! A lot of personal growth. A lot of times this is how it happens. Totally believe in the universe and letting the human experience be. Then these kinds of things happen. It’s always magic!

Now just playing with a ridiculous amount of vibrato just for fun cause of the inspiration of the video. Learning to let go more in my playing! it’s so important to be accepting of ourselves with other people. Thanks so much for sharing!

I’m so glad that you’re having these experiences much earlier in your life that I’ve been able to have in mine. It’s such a deep and profound message to share with everyone. I want to say I’m proud of you as if you’re my daughter! And I’m happy for all of us no matter when we’re able to have this, too!
Keep having the faith to continue to trust in having these experiences. I can’t tell you how much it’s worth it!🎉😂❤
