I ditto so many of the comments. I have been crocheting for 40 years. All 7 of my kids are grown and the grandkids are multiplying. So I spent the last year falling in love with yarn again. I discovered UA-cam and have increased my knowledge and found what I enjoy making the most. I have sold a few things but not actually put anything out there. Among other things I learned there is more than one way to single crochet. I am ready to start putting my work out there. BUT I am terrified of social media. I haven't even been on anything except Messenger. But you inspired me so I am going to download the apps and look at it as a business opportunity. It might take me a minute to figure it out but I raised 7 children and we all made it out in the right number of pieces so I can handle learning how to navigate tiktok. Right?

You should have your family and friends make the future purchases through etsy maybe in the future? Depending on how much commission they’re taking right now, having some confirmed sales on your page really could help other people make the decision to purchase and be like advertising!

I was only doing it for fun hiding my work thinking it wasn’t good enough until other people started seeing my work and placing orders. i started an etsy after creating an instagram page and having ppl interested in buying but i easily got discouraged seeing no sales come through. people would show interest, i’d made a few of the products just bc i ended up having free time and when i uploaded it to the sites they changed their mind which is fine, but it’s discouraging as helllll!! im a broke ass college student so keeping the hobby alive started to get too much and now i rarely crochet which sucks bc i love it so much. I just wish i were able to find the thing that sticks and that draws ppl in bc rn its just customs and me testing our free patterns but im not at all creative enough to create my own kind of pattern ppl would wanna see i think thats where i get stuck 😭
hey i underrstand your frustration! im also a college student who runs a small crochet business (hookedbylibra on etsy :P) and this was my biggest issue too when I first started. I'm still figuring things out, but my best advice for you is to keep going! I noticed you said you were making customs and making patterns, which is not a bad idea at all! however, a lot of small businesses take off by putting out a lot of one of their products and seeing how it does one at a time. it's time consuming, but not doing this when i first began is what catapulted my rocky start to my small business. when I first started, the very first hat a i made was a strawberry crochet ruffle hat. i posted it on twitter and it received a lot of attention as like the creator said, coquette is on a rise and strawberries are a staple in the coquette community. i did not get a lot of sales, however, as i only had one of these in stock. as scary as it is, and as huge of an investment it is, I've seen better progress with stocking up the beanies and hats i sell. people see faster shipping, better quality of the products, and when an item is highly in stock they are more likely to buy! i also receive a lot of inspiration off of pinterest if creativity is also an issue for you as it was for me when i first began. trust me, I have a LOT of ups and downs, especially right now, but I'm finding my way and you will too :)
I know in a world like today there’s a huge push to do it so you can monetize it/hobbies are good hobbies when they make money, but if you love it you should do it!! Don’t worry about making money or making it for anyone else, look up patterns for things that exist that you already like and practice on those. You shouldn’t stop something you love just because you’re not making money from it you know? Wishing you the best!!
Also being broke, I get yarn from thrift stores sometimes. I don’t sell these mainly bc the yarn realistically could’ve been anywhere, but it’s pretty easy to see which yarn is from someone who bought too much & is great (I’ve found vintage yarn fully packaged) and normally there’s a few bundles of yarn for $2/$3. That’s what I did to keep making stuff/practice in the beginning while still being able to eat lmao

I am learning crochet and I am so insecure about my stuff, even tho I do it and it looks good for a beginner and I have be trying SO MUCH, even people around me asked if I do it for a long time and I be like "no, I started in the first week of 2024", and I see choked, like, CRAZY SHOCK faces. I can do so much (I made a bag, 3 types of card holders, 3 actual useful leaf holder, the last one is the prettiest! And A cute decoration for my charger), but PRACTICE is the key, so I am not giving up. And in my country we don't have cutesy things in crochet, so what I am doing in isn't really popular or common, but I am loving so much and I have so much in mind to do. Not sure if this still works, but I remember being able to circumvent the 1k follower link issue on tiktok by setting the account to a business one. Then, it lets you add your website link regardless of how many followers you have. The trade-off was that I remember not being able to duet videos, but it's been a couple of years so that might have changed.
I’ve been selling crochet for some time now, but sometimes the sudden pressure of having everything perfect becomes overwhelming. Especially doing custom orders. I love this ❤ I’ve been crocheting for 14 years and completely free style. I suffer from Extreme Depression and Anxiety and I struggle at my job. My dream is too be able to get audience/traffic on my UA-cam channel and tiktok/instagram for my Crochet business. I would die to be able to do this full time, unfortunately in my state pretty much everyone is cheap (I got told a 4 hour purse for $15 was too much by a lot of people here) so I struggle to get commissions locally 😂 my first craft show was a bust because of the amount of people also saying that. Made $30 and it was 6 hours event 😂😊

i started an etsy after creating an instagram page and having ppl interested in buying but i easily got discouraged seeing no sales come through. people would show interest, i’d made a few of the products just bc i ended up having free time and when i uploaded it to the sites they changed their mind which is fine, but it’s discouraging as helllll!! im a broke ass college student so keeping the hobby alive started to get too much and now i rarely crochet which sucks bc i love it so much. I just wish i were able to find the thing that sticks and that draws ppl in bc rn its just customs and me testing our free patterns but im not at all creative enough to create my own kind of pattern ppl would wanna see i think thats where i get stuck 😭
hey i underrstand your frustration! im also a college student who runs a small crochet business (hookedbylibra on etsy :P) and this was my biggest issue too when I first started. I'm still figuring things out, but my best advice for you is to keep going!
I noticed you said you were making customs and making patterns, which is not a bad idea at all! however, a lot of small businesses take off by putting out a lot of one of their products and seeing how it does one at a time. it's time consuming, but not doing this when i first began is what catapulted my rocky start to my small business.
when I first started, the very first hat a i made was a strawberry crochet ruffle hat. i posted it on twitter and it received a lot of attention as like the creator said, coquette is on a rise and strawberries are a staple in the coquette community. i did not get a lot of sales, however, as i only had one of these in stock. as scary as it is, and as huge of an investment it is, I've seen better progress with stocking up the beanies and hats i sell. people see faster shipping, better quality of the products, and when an item is highly in stock they are more likely to buy!
i also receive a lot of inspiration off of pinterest if creativity is also an issue for you as it was for me when i first began. trust me, I have a LOT of ups and downs, especially right now, but I'm finding my way and you will too :)
I know in a world like today there’s a huge push to do it so you can monetize it/hobbies are good hobbies when they make money, but if you love it you should do it!! Don’t worry about making money or making it for anyone else, look up patterns for things that exist that you already like and practice on those. You shouldn’t stop something you love just because you’re not making money from it you know? Wishing you the best!!
Also being broke, I get yarn from thrift stores sometimes. I don’t sell these mainly bc the yarn realistically could’ve been anywhere, but it’s pretty easy to see which yarn is from someone who bought too much & is great (I’ve found vintage yarn fully packaged) and normally there’s a few bundles of yarn for $2/$3. That’s what I did to keep making stuff/practice in the beginning while still being able to eat lmao
Maybe try craft markets with a low table/booth fee

I am learning crochet and I am so insecure about my stuff, even tho I do it and it looks good for a beginner and I have be trying SO MUCH, even people around me asked if I do it for a long time and I be like "no, I started in the first week of 2024", and I see choked, like, CRAZY SHOCK faces. I can do so much (I made a bag, 3 types of card holders, 3 actual useful leaf holder, the last one is the prettiest! And A cute decoration for my charger), but PRACTICE is the key, so I am not giving up. And in my country we don't have cutesy things in crochet, so what I am doing in isn't really popular or common, but I am loving so much and I have so much in mind to do. Love these! Another tip is to get a digital business card Keychain. People scan the QR with their camera and they're immediately on your site. People move on to the next thing as soon as they walk away from you but if you get them on your site RIGHT THEN, bam, already shopping.

Not sure if this still works, but I remember being able to circumvent the 1k follower link issue on tiktok by setting the account to a business one. Then, it lets you add your website link regardless of how many followers you have. The trade-off was that I remember not being able to duet videos, but it's been a couple of years so that might have changed.

I love this ❤ I’ve been crocheting for 14 years and completely free style. I suffer from Extreme Depression and Anxiety and I struggle at my job. My dream is too be able to get audience/traffic on my UA-cam channel and tiktok/instagram for my Crochet business. I would die to be able to do this full time, unfortunately in my state pretty much everyone is cheap (I got told a 4 hour purse for $15 was too much by a lot of people here) so I struggle to get commissions locally 😂 my first craft show was a bust because of the amount of people also saying that. Made $30 and it was 6 hours event 😂😊
