    If it means cars can actually follow each other and will allow better racing, I'm all for it. Like Ricciardo said, it would be much better for the sport if the cars were a couple seconds slower but could race.

      Its sad to think the only good races so far have been the ones involving safety car.

    • @HimmeetValot

      @Alumnikiid Yeah, people bitch how artificial DRS is to create overtaking, but i think safety cars are way more artificial on mixing up the order, really exciting, but really unfair and artificial. Not saying that i dont like seeing it, but its not fair at all.

      Kasetti 55 “people bitch”
      Let’s be honest. The fanbase will bitch about anything. They demand closer racing, then the FIA does something to address that. Then you see them saying they don’t care about overtaking. Can’t please the fanbase

      They should scrap nearly all the stupid rules, let them refuel, whatever, let the teams battle it out like it used to be. The authoritarianism of F1 is always playing catch-up to reality and wrecking the races. I mean they’ve even banned the grid girls ffs the plonkers.

    • @LethalWalou
      @LethalWalou 6 років тому +43

      Measurit Properly Refueling will never come back nor should it ever come back. It was very dangerous and there were incidents in almost every race, some had several. It created nice change to strategies but it is just way too dangerous and way too prone to human errors. I'm amazed there are still people like you thinking refueling would be a good idea... Short memory or you're new to F1.

      i really dont get why they are not pushing the aero toward more ground effect ? .. if the biggest probleme is dirty air .. with cars aero based on ground effect we get rid off that ... and we get less drag so less fuel used .. lets turn the f1 cars into "fan cars" .. because the problem is not that cars are faster .. its that the aero they using to get faster is creating dirty air

    • @Hofftari
      @Hofftari 6 років тому +3

      Night Drivin' Avenger because ground effects are dangerous. It makes constructors use less downforce on the wings in favour of the ground effect. That's all fine until a car is launched a bit and all the ground effect is lost

      TRMS I would rather see the tracks get redesigned, dropped off the calendar, or build new tracks that can make racing interesting again. Canada is a great example of a track that once was great. But, now, even Canada can not accommodate these faster and larger cars for passing. And do not even get me started on the street tracks. They ALL need to go.

      Rule changes happen all the time and this will (theoretically, they are not wizards) improve overtaking and competition. I really don't get why people complain about "no overtaking boring sport" but also "no, don't change the rules (for the better), the car should be designed by teams" and then even calling themselves "fans"! If you don't like it, good luck finding a Motorsport with no rule changes and super close racing which is also at the top of motorsport.

  • @sinbaadi
    @sinbaadi 6 років тому +394

    F1 "Fans" have no idea what they want.
    You all want F1 to be the pinnacle of speed and innovation, but you want the drivers to play a part as if it were a single-make series! You want the best teams to be rewarded for building the best cars, but you want underdogs to be able to fight and cost caps to keep them in the series.
    They say you can't please all the people all of the time. Well I don't think F1 "Fans" can be pleased any of the time. No sooner do they say they are making changes to reduce the effects of "dirty air" than people start to whine about how the cars will be slower.

    The FIAFOM really missed a trick here F1 should really have re-explored ground effect aerodynamics -this would have meant less wing turbulence but still massively fast cars . However the FIA seems to have phobia of ever looking into ground effect again ever since it was banned in the 80s because of Safety . Tech have moved on a long way since the 80s and surely engineers could develop ground effect aero that is both effective performance wise and safe for drivers.

    • @jk844100
      @jk844100 6 років тому +64

      Stephen Taylor even with modern technology ground effect isn’t safe. The way the cars currently are if you lose grip mid corner you can save it (i.e. Perez in Canada, Verstappen in Brazil) but if the main aero is ground effect once you exceed the limits of ground effect all downforce disappears and you’re off into the barrier with no chance of saving it whatsoever.
      Modern tech isn’t going to change that.

    • @TheSt1092
      @TheSt1092 6 років тому +28

      Just because it might cause more spins doesn't mean that is unsafe -no one is going to be killed by spinning the car into a barrier especially with the Halo. Modern technology can always make things more efficient. Ground effect is clearly the way forward.. These are the best drivers in the world a they should be tested.

    Well that is some good change but teams like redbull are strong on aero so that they can be close to front runners. The removal of complex aero and more effective DRS means cars with powerful engine will always stay at the front. They can start on 10th and still finish on podiums. The real change should be on the power unit, standardizing the MGU K and MGU H could be better.

    • @thenextjeymar8658
      @thenextjeymar8658 6 років тому

      Nico v Lewis' battle in Austria, is how the few seasons have been really in the sense differing tyres types and ages allows for pace advantages/disadvantages and therefore overtakes. In the hybrid era, the only real battles that really stick in my mind of close racing were between or involved Nico and Lewis in '14, '15, '16 (because they were so equal) and as of '17 and '18 Verstappen (because of his do or die racing style). I see your point though about overtaking being a product of DRS and tyres. However, if you look at Nico v Lewis in Bahrain '14, they produced probably the best racing of the hybrid era because their cars were so equally dominant, no complaining about F. Wings or 'dirty air'. I think to solve the issue maybe look at the 2014 cars, especially the Mercs just for inspiration because they were trading positions at will for half the race, esp after the SC. I dont know if im making sense to you, but just my opinion. I see your point, but looking at it both ways.

    • @theglitch312
      @theglitch312 6 років тому

      Max vs Dan at Sepang 2016? Those cars could go wheel to wheel at almost any track, I've yet to see anything like that since. And if you want to go there, in 2018 all passes for the lead were made either under SC, DNFs, or due to vastly better tires. If Montreal's 3 DRS zones can't produce some overtakes, you know the formula very negatively affects racing.

      @sadkermit78 6 років тому

      Carlitox b I presume you’re talking about Bahrain, correct? So wasn’t bottas something like 5 seconds behind going into the last few laps? He only caught up about half way around the final lap so there’s no way DRS would be as effective. DRS is supposed to close the gap of a second generally around the whole lap, so by the last straight, the cars can overtake. It’s unrealistic in the higher tier cars to make up a second and pass in a DRS zone.

    Just have one dry tyre compound that is designed to last somewhere between 1/3 and 1/2 a race, ideally so it's viable that a team could decide to manage the tyres to achieve a one-stop, but it's generally more beneficial to push and two-stop. With Pirelli as sole supplier, there's no need to have multiple compounds, as it's not like a rival will just make a more durable single compound. This would reduce expenses, increase the number of required pit stops and make it easier for newcomers to the sport to understand. Any "intrigue" over tyre selection strategy at the moment is minimal at best.

    I'd like to see pre-2009 front wings come back - I don't like how front wings nowadays extend in front of the front wheels. I'm not sure if I'd prefer pre-2005 low, narrow or raised, narrow pre-2009 specifically though since the 05-08 cars looked pretty radical and awesome.

    • @ShmuelWeintraub

      Yep. Significantly reduced downforce overall would produce better racing, as would narrower (or just harder) tyres. It would put performance much more down to the driver than the engineers and designers.
      Mario Andretti said this in 1979. It is still true today.

    So many specific regulations - I wish engineers could pretty much do what they want, as long as the cars could be tested to ensure they don't create a certain amount dirty air. This would allow cars to overtake, while allowing various weird & wonderful solutions to be invented - a huge amount of the appeal of F1.

      Thirty + years ago the common answer to "what is the difference between F1 and other series" was that other series specify what IS legal, while F1 only specifies what isn't.
      That's an oversimplification, but at heart does go to what F1 was in relation to the rest of the motorsport world. There have always been a lot of regulations, but the amount we have now (specifying the location of exhaust exits, nose design, number and location of rear wing 'gills', mandatory pitstops etc) is pure overkill.
      That the FIA believes this level of minutae management is necessary speaks to how fundamentally flawed the present car, engine and tyre specification is.
      It's time for wholesale change. If that means F1 cars are no longer the fastest around any given circuit, so be it. We cannot go on imposing ever more extreme regulations on the cars... fundamentally change the nature of the regulations once and let the designers get back to work figuring out how to make the fastest cars under those regulations.

    • @Palondrian
      @Palondrian 6 років тому +1

      Teams would use different cars for the FIA tests (different wings) and would make them think that their cars aren‘t creating a lot of dirty air. For the opning race in Melbourne they would add some winglets and stuff and you wouldn‘t see any obertaking

    List of things that will help to have better racing:
    - Smaller cars
    - Tyres that don't last the entire race
    - Refueling
    - No pay drivers
    - More sound
    - No fuel limits
    - No DRS, those overtakes are worth nothing
    - More tyre suppliers
    - Allow to race when it rains
    - More gravel traps in the circuits, mistakes should be punished
    - More circuits like Baku

  • @DjDolHaus86
    @DjDolHaus86 6 років тому

    Unless designers are forced to make the front wing elements run the full width you're still going to have problems with vortexes being thrown off the side of the car (the inside edge of the winglets creates a vortex travelling behind the wheels and is used to channel air down the sides of the car and create a buffer zone between the upper and lower side of the body to increase overall downforce, commonly known as the Y250 vortex). A simplified design will make the following car slightly less sensitive to dirty air but the vortex problem still exists and cars will still get stuck in an exclusion zone where they are unable to maintain cornering pace within 1-2 seconds of the lead car

      +Britton Kithcart Here's
      In 2017, the FIA began negotiations with existing constructors and potential new manufacturers over the next generation of engines with a projected introduction date of 2021. The initial proposal was designed to simplify engine designs, cut costs, promote new entries and address criticisms directed at the 2014 generation of engines. It called for the 1.6L V6 configuration to be retained, but abandoned the complex Motor Generator Unit-Heat (MGU-H) system. The Motor Generator Unit-Kinetic (MGU-K) would be more powerful, with a greater emphasis on driver deployment and a more flexible introduction to allow for tactical use. The proposal also called for the introduction of standardised components and design parameters to make components produced by all manufacturers compatible with one another in a system dubbed "plug in and play". A further proposal to allow four-wheel drive cars was also tabled, with the front axle driven by an MGU-K unit-as opposed to the traditional driveshaft-that functioned independently of the MGU-K providing power to the rear axle, mirroring the system developed by Porsche for the 919 Hybrid sportscar.

Perhaps less restrictions in ither areas of the regulations could allow the different chassis and engines to make for more interesting design along with better racing.

    I still wish they'd rather keep the technical regulations entirely stable until 2020 as significant technical reg changes are set to come into effect for the following season anyway due to the '1.5 seconds slower lap times compared to this season' estimation. Hopefully, with the 2021 changes, we would be able to get both the lap times back to the 2017-18 levels as well as the cars being significantly more following-friendly/race-able than they've been for a long time. If these short-term interim changes were to fail to make any difference at all to the difficulty of following another car closely, i.e., things would remain precisely the same as now with the more complex front wings, etc., then the 1.5-second loss in lap time would be even more annoying.

    • @TheBulletproof86
      @TheBulletproof86 6 років тому +16

      TheJokerit19 as a viewer you don't see any difference when cars are slower 2 seconds or even 5 seconds. But you see there 's no action in race. And that's why it is important to reduce the aerodynamics. We are all F1 fans because of races and not free quick hot laps in FP or Q

    • @TheJokerit19
      @TheJokerit19 6 років тому +1

      Wrong, a difference of 5 seconds in lap time is indeed very noticeable. Anything starting from 2 seconds or even lower than that can be rather easily noticeable to the naked eye especially when comparing two laps with that big difference side-by-side. Furthermore, concerning the last part of your reply: I indeed am a fan of F1 also because of free quick hot laps in qualifying, and or free practice, not only because of the races, i.e., I do care a lot about the lap times as well, which is why I hope that with the next significant technical regulation changes we could have both the lap times in the 2017-18 levels, as well as, significantly more followable/race-able cars.

      They can easily lower the DRS effect by shortening the DRS zone, however the DRS effect is too weak on some tracks, and there is no way to make it stronger except like this.

That would mean that the talent the driver would be the key factor of winning. The more talented you are the more you can Go to the cars limit. Oh yeah and no fuel or tire limit

    Not to sure about the rear wing change to make DRS more powerful. Think of tracks like Baku, China, Monza etc with huge straights were the current DRS already allows drivers to completely pass the other car on the main straight before the first corner. These changes will mean that a car can overtake on the straight even more easily. We want exciting overtakes, not boring straight line passes....

    This isnt really a big drawback in technology since aerodynamics are much less complex than parts like the engine or battery. The direction in which aero evolved was making thinner and smaller winglets from carbon fiber which could only get so small before they lose all effects. What im saying is that aero was a dead road and if these regulations stayed, room for improvement would be minimal

  • @Bazzookie
    @Bazzookie 6 років тому

    I'm assuming they've decided on this because of how much more competitive and exciting the road racing has become in Indycar after Indycar simplified the top aero and improved the underwing. F1 isn't really gambling with the new changes because it has already been proven to improve the racing in Indycar (which is a similar racing series in many aspects). Plus, more simple aero will allow for smaller teams to try and compete because aero development will be less expensive. If the cars are slower in the corners but drivers can actually compete and battle for position then it's a win win scenario. Drivers are happier and fans are happier.

    I'm afraid the simpler front wing will make cars get closer because less dirty air, and then they will just pass on the straight with the even more overpowered DRS.
    DRS was made to compensate for the dirty air. Now that we have less dirty air (2019), they make the DRS EVEN STRONGER. I'm scared. Back in the day you had to get a good exit, slipstream, a good maneuver, a good line and good braking to get past on a straight line with almost equal cars. Now it's all done with the press of a button.
    A bit of DRS is fine, because F1 cars generate much dirty air, regardless of the simplicity. The wings are just very big.

      matthew barclay First of all, why compare a TIME ATTACK fully upgraded lmp1 car with an f1 car? Second of all ground effect won't come back I'm afraid because the FIA thinks it's too unsafe.

    • @ajw1045
      @ajw1045 6 років тому +2

      matthew barclay That 'lmp1' car had was more easy to drive and as I said fully upgraded, no rules. F1 cars have never been this fast. If some company upgrades a 2017/18 F1 car it would smash that record again. Besides, F1 cars will probably get that record back this year anyway. Ground effect will indeed help for overtaking and speed, but the FIA just won't allow it.

    lets hope this works. I was watching the v8 supercars yesterday (I know different type of car altogether) and during the race there was a moment where there was 4 cars all in the same corner trying to over take.
    It was great and it struck me,, you don't even really see F1's going two wide into corners much these days, it happens sometimes but then the disturbance happens.
    Hopefully the new aero changes makes going two wide and following close more of a possibility in 2019.
    I'd like to see them consistently been able to follow only about 4-5 meters from each over with no or very minimal disturbance from the air.

      Comi spero perché sennò è stato tutto inutile. Per colpa di questi nuovi regolamenti i team sono costretti ad interrompere prima lo sviluppo della vettura di quest'anno, praticamente bisogna rifare un telaio completamente nuovo e la aerodinamica sarà stravolta. Secondo me la FIA sta facendo troppi cambiamenti in questi 3 anni, si dovrebbero lasciare uguali le auto per almeno un paio di anni, e poi ci sono sempre meno motori e ,come ha detto Hamilton, sarebbe ridicolo che l'anno prossimo ci fossero solo 2 motori, così si correrebbe il rischio di pregiudicare una stagione dell'affidabilità e non sarebbe per niente bello.

    • @LOLmanITA
      @LOLmanITA 6 років тому +1

      Matteo Tonioll Tonioll il fatto è che la complessità dell' aerodinamica attuale crea dei vortici di "aria sporca" che non permette all' auto che segue di avvicinarsi oltre il secondo di distanza, per questo l'aerodinamica è stata semplificata, per permettere alle auto di gareggiare

    • @madmanbass78
      @madmanbass78 6 років тому

      Beh..se si torna indietro significa che allora c'erano regole più semplici che consentivano alle F1 di gareggiare. Le F1 moderne sono tecnologicamente super avanzate oggi, si parla da una decina d'anni di auto ibride ma la meccanica restameccanica, l'aerodinamica pure, e se l'opzione migliore fosse quella di tornare alla semplicità e pulizia di queste ultime, allora io sono per! :)

      @TheJokerit19 6 років тому +2

      David D ELI Nowhere near to that level, LOL. What pot have you been smoking? The lap times are estimated to only be 1.5 seconds slower compared this season, so they're still going to be 'significantly' faster than 2014, '15, and even '16 on most of the circuits. On most of the tracks, next season is set to only lose to this and last season but still remain ahead of all the pre-2017 aero-reg seasons. It'd be close with 2016 in Bahrain and Baku, but on the remaining five venues F1's been to so far this season besides those two, they're still going to stay comfortably ahead of 2016 in ultimate lap time pace especially in China and Spain.

    Regulation changes introduced for 2009 to the front wing kind of worked, but the cars were still having a hard time following though. But soon after, teams were finding ways to add bits to the front wing with no intervention from the FIA. IMO they should bring back ground effect and get rid of that damn plank of wood underneath.

I am sure in F1 the screen/shield idea was floated but for whatever reason they went with the halo - maybe it is the extra advertising space? or the screen option would not be sufficient to deflect flying tires?
