STOP! . . . . Hammertime!. . . ok I'll see myself out. Edit: Almost forgot to mention apart fromt he bad dad joke, Tie Fighter episodes are to be released Mondays and Firdays each week. Fridays will be the completion of Battle 1 and the events of Outpost D-34.
The nostalgia is real! Real pilots don't need no stinking shields. This game still holds up. Am loving the updates to the engine. Squadrons looks pretty but is arcadey whereas this has everything that's needed for a legendary space combat sim.
For a 90's game the amount of world building which is something that is seriously lacking today... also that you have so much flying about 70 odd Ties plus the enemy team is pretty damn amazing...
Yes, I agree. Good story and good world building is lacking in a lot of modern games but it's very lacking in space combat/cockpit sims, at least in those few that still exist. What's more impressive is the story of this game is built to wrap around The Empire Strikes Back and The Return of the Jedi, the outpost D-34 missions are dealing directly with the rebel evacuees from Hoth, the final missions are the lead up to the Battle of Endor.
The lack of world building in modern media is the consequence of instant gratification centric marketing. Or the equivalent of skipping your veggies so you can rush to dessert. The original X-Wing Alliance told the story of the Azzameen family affairs in running their station amidst the growing unrest; you don't actually start out loyal to the rebels. In fact, it takes nearly a dozen missions before you even fly for the Rebel Alliance and makes the payoff actually mean something when it finally does happen.
oh man the nostalgia. Tie Fighter was my go-to in my preteen years. I was 9 when it came out. I maintain it's still the best star wars flight game to date. Going to have to look into this mode. Keep on keeping on Magz :)
The sound of those turbolasers off the ISD is so fantastic, super sick to see it come into action. Also I love seeing the Probe Droids floating around the hanger.
Pure adrenaline. You fly a Tie fighter and you have only one hit tolerance, the second will be fatal, unless the enemy shoots you with twin canons or quad 😱
Woah!! You managed to endure two horrific hits from enraged X-Wing fighters and Y-Wing bombers and lived! Before that, you shot down countless more, and revealed a Imperial Shuttle full of Rebel Officers hijacking it! You couldn't protect the modified Juno Cruiser from being destroyed, but you avenged it. Just amazing! Update: This was your first assignment!! Cool!
Also you Caught the Attention of the Emperor himself due to your extreme intelligence, improvisation, skills, and bravery. You literally nursed a severely damaged Tie Fighter back to the hanger with damage that would have destroyed even Tie Interceptors. So he personally decided to make you a member of The Secret Order of The Emperor!! Legendary!
The capital ship interior we see in between missions reminds me of Freespace. They had a beautifully and highly detailed hangar has a menu. I wish I could have that as animated desktop background.
Most of the space sims or cockpit sims of the time had somthing similar, from the Wing Commander games even to old school MechWarrior 2. It was the common way of the time for building an interactive menu that wasn't just a menu.
Oh, I absolutely love this! It is like polished and improved nostalgia! So many memories and experiences given a fresh coat of paint and posed in near perfect light 😊 I don't know why no one has tried to make a proper sequel to this game/series with modern computers in mind. Squadrons tried to advertise itself as a renewal of these games, but it fell so, so far short. I can only imagine how amazing a faithful sequel could be. All they would need to do is copy and paste the game mechanics into a beautiful engine and write a compelling story to play through, it could even be seamlessly multiplayer, like Borderlands where players can join you at any time and play the campaign with you without changing the story or loading into a separate MP world. Might have a bit of difficulty making it PvP since each faction's star fighters are so vastly different in performance. I hated how Squadrons tried to balance the vehicles, like a TIE L/N isn't supposed to be a match for an X-Wing, they're supposed to outnumber it. TIE Fighter made you feel like an absolute badass because for the first dozen or so missions, you were flying a tin foil ship against the legendary workhorse of the Rebelion and you somehow came out on top, so by the time you were permitted to fly the more powerful, shielded vehicles, you almost wanted to turn off the shields just to squeeze a bit more speed out of them. After all, you got that far without shields, who's to say you need them now?
That takes money and why spend it on quality versus quantity. Disney isn't what Lucasarts used to he. It doesn't love this franchise so much as use it. Loving something more than the creators or owners do just leads to upset.
I like the fact that the concourse exterior updates to the status of the campaign. hyperspace outside while in transit back to D-34 is a real nice touch
I don’t remember if it was ever released. But in the game files for Star Wars squadrons there was a decal for imperial ships resembling the tattoo you get for completing the emperor’s secret objectives.
The starfighters in Squadrons also.. Just feel slow. I had hoped that game would bring back the feel of X-Wing and TIE Fighter.... But, alas, not so much. Such a great opportunity missed.
Great game update and video. And it's such a joy to hear Buoy pronounce Boy, and not Boooooooooeeeeeeeeee. Holy mackrel, that used to irritate me like hell in Alliance 😁
Same! Heck, I remember back when I played the OG version of the game, that I would spend about 80% of the final(?) battle just spinning & dodging! (and THAT'S in a Tie Defender!) While relying on Vader & other computer-controlled allies to handle the bulk of the fighting! (Only getting "aggressive" when I absolutely HAD to! "You want to save the Emperor? Fine! YOU save him! I'm busy not getting hit!" lol)
In the old tie fighter it was possible to ask your squadron to aim to take down a certain target (Shift-f5), ignore it or follow your lead. Is that possible here, too?
Of all the primary fighters? TIE/SA, I like to dogfight and the Bomber just lacks power, it's slow, doesn't handle all that well and while that puts it next to the Y-wing in terms of performance the Y-wing at least has shields.
So if I have the Steam version of X-Wing Alliance, and it's already modded with the XWAUP, would I still be able to play this, or do I have to install a fresh version of Alliance? I do still have my CDs from 1998, so maybe I can install another version not in my stream folder. TIA.
I had made a sound pack for this game and can't seem to find it. The weak part of alliance were definetely explosion sounds, just sounds like noise. If I find it I'll send it to you :)
Pay closer attention to the starfield when I’m evading, I’m not spinning I’m rolling. Stick position hard right and down varying position between centre and hard right while also applying varying rudder between center and hard right. The result is a barrel roll that varies in size through each loop while also changing my heading vector constantly. I’ve been simming in everything from WW1 fighters to Star fighters for around 30 years, I know not to roll in a straight line. :) Edit: this is also partly why I will often just roll even when not evading and heading in on a target, im a simple rudder push and a stick pull away from being next to impossible to lead.
Man, its a good thing niether the mod not the original game modled the top turret correctly on the Y-wing and made it so a second crewman in those things could control it and swing it around on you....
@@MrLBPug Legends: The Rebels had multiple Y-Wing variations, but they'd always strip off the armor and give it modern shield systems. If you want to be put in a real Defender, you're in the wrong place. The one they put in this mod looks nothing like the original design. They gave it Interceptor wings and a TIE Fighter exhaust. Massacred it :/
Yeah, I just checked my kill list on my halfway completed playthrough. Y-Wing kills are 5 times the next highest craft. Way too many missions have "Protect (Home Base)" as an objective to let you fight fighters and make runs on capital ships.

So while yes 'zed' is what Brits typically use, 'zee' is also valid. It could be at the time he was directed to say 'zee' for an international audience, but who knows.
