I just finished Convenience Store Woman yesterday and loved it. I appreciate your assessment and totally agree that the marketing is off. I empathize with Keiko and Shiraha's angst against society, but I also feel that they could possibly have a personality disorder. Seeing the world through Keiko’s eyes reminds the reader of how petty and cold people can be to non-conformists or people with disorders.

The Overcoat is such a beautiful and defining story,. Now that you are so into Magic Realism, Gogol is one of those authors that many have related with that form of writing (him, Kafka, Proust,...). 'The Nose', 'Taras Bulba', 'Dead Souls', 'Leaving the Theater' ... all so fun to read, even if the subject matter is tragic. Funny enough, I gave a talk on Latin American Magic Realism a couple of weeks ago at my university and it was really interesting to rediscover some classics. As I Colombian, I would recommend Evelio José Rosero 'The Armies', but there are so many more to recommend. Thanks for the video!

One book that has always stayed with me is “The Sailor Who Fell from Grace with the Sea” by Yukio Mishima. There are a couple of slightly disturbing scenes, but his writing is beautiful (in Japanese in particular). I also enjoyed “I am a Cat” by Natsume Soseki.
If you don’t mind a longer read, “The Tale of Genji” is very famous and referenced a lot in Japanese literature.

Really recommend Gogol's Dead Souls. It's about a guy trying to get rich by buying the rights to dead serfs from a bunch of land owners. As you can imagine, there is a collection of weird people that the main character tries to do bussiness with and a lot of Gogol's humor. His short story The Nose is also very good, about a fancy and arrogant man that has his nose stolen.

For Irish literature, you should try Tana French. She’s got that beautiful, slightly speculative Irish tint to her books, and she mostly writes really great, detailed literary detective/mystery fiction. Her debut, In The Woods, was incredibly impressive and a very unique read. I bet it creates a lot of controversy among readers. Really recommend. I’ve also read The Secret Place by her and loved it, and am currently reading The Likeness.

Ohh Emma I didn't realize you were a fellow Canadian!!! I think we have some similar goals for this year - love classics & love the gothic vibes. On Canadian books, I'm trying to read more as well. You might enjoy By Grand Central Station I Sat Down and Wept by Elizabeth Smart which is a whirlwind of poetry about her love affair with a poet & Funny Boy by Shyam Selvadurai is a diaspora coming of age story!

Hello Emmie. You are so right. CONVENIENT STORE WOMAN shows this brave girl not letting herself being affected by society. We could all (men and women) learn so much from her. And it is not just about Japan. I think it is also about our western society and all the expectations that are expected for all to fulfill. This book is a great lesson because this 'weird' girl allowed herself to be herself, and that made her happy, she disregarded prejudices, that is so admirable. Helloes from Mexico City !

What you said about the reviews written on this book: I have not read this book; however, this exactly was my problem with Eleanor is Completely Fine. The book cover says "Incredibly Funny" when in fact it was a heartbreaking story about terrible trauma and survival.

an hour long video, what a perfect way to start off my morning routine today! happy to see my apothecary postcard up on your wall, and to see so many good recommendations in the comments! some random authors to look into:
marina tsvetaeva and anna akhmatova (russian female poets! don't hear much about female russian authors).
adonis, maram al-masri and mahmoud darwish for middle eastern poetry (i am slowly making my way through an adonis collection and loving it! still yet to buy a darwish collection because $$ but i have loved the snippets i've seen). for turkish literature: orhan pamuk and elif shafak! i would start with one of her more straightforward novels, like the architect's apprentice or the bastard of istanbul.
for latin american and spanish lit, i have not read full collections, but have enjoyed what i've seen so far from gabriela mistral, jorge luis borges, mario llosa, and federico garcia lorca.
in terms of irish writers i have only read seamus heaney i think, but iirc colm toibin is also irish and well regarded. for australian authors, david malouf writes beautiful stuff, and for canadian lit i will second michael ondaatje, absolutely love his work! both his prose and poetry are worth a look.
for japanese lit, apart from osamu dazai and yukio mishima - junichiro tanizaki (the makioka sisters), keiga higashino (mysteries), and fumiko enchi (the waiting years) are all worth a look.
for indian literature, I have been impressed by arundhati roy's work, and also jhumpa lahiri's (more of diaspora lit)

I read The Stationery Shop by Marjan Kamali last year. Really enjoyed reading the book set in the backdrop of Iran’s coup d’état in 1953. Spans a summer and 6 decades and i still think about it. Really recommend!

I recommend The Hungry Tide by the Indian author Amitav Ghosh! I feel like the plot isn’t the strongest, but the writing about the setting is gorgeous, it provides a really interesting environmental justice commentary, and there are a lot of references to Rilke. Also The Name of the Rose is a wonderful dark academia Italian novel

Have you though about joining “invisible cities project/ readathon? One of the booktubers who created is “Curious reader”and they are reading three countries each month and other stuff, she also gives VERY good translated lit recs and she likes darker themes and i believe some magical realism too.. I think you’ll enjoy her channel and the project ♥️
Also I haven’t read but i live in spain and the most famous magical realism here from South America would be Isabel Allende’s “House of Spirits” and some of her early work and Gabriel García Marques with “One hundred years of solitud” (which you may have already read)

Hi Emmie! Last month I read Eartheater by Dolores Reyes and I think you might like it, it's a feminist magical realism novel. It may be hard to read because of how real and violent it can be, but the magical realism really helps to go through it and makes a beautiful metaphor.💚

A book recommendation from Switzerland would be “the physicists” by Friedrich Dürrenmatt. I had to read it for school (I went to school in Germany) and I absolutely loved it. And from Germany it would be “Faust - the first part of the tragedy” by Goethe, also a book I had to read for school and really enjoyed.

My love recommendation from Russia.🇷🇺 This is "A Hero of Our Time". The novel by Mikhail Lermontov, where the protagonist is the prototype of the author himself. The main character (Pechorin), a person who sees the world differently, he is indifferent, hides all feelings deeply in himself and plays with the feelings of strangers. If you look from the one side, then he is rather a negative hero, but if from the other side, then the past made him so:
*** I was ready to love the whole world, but he did not reciprocate and learned to hate. I was open to everyone, they laughed at me and I became secretive ....
    A small excerpt.
I highly recommend this novel, and I hope you read it.))) ❤️

-R.U.R by Karel Čapek (he is a famous Czech author and in this book he first mentioned the word robot, which he invented himself)

You should read Atwood! I'm sure you'll love her 🥺
What I'd recommend is My name is Red by Orhan Pamuk (Istanbul) I adore this one because it has such gorgeous descriptions of artists at work and a lot of history of eastern traditional art and stuff while being a murder mystery/ love story on the side

Recommendation: The Blind Owl by Sadegh Hedayat!
It's a short Persian/Iranian novel published in the 20th century. I've only read snippets of it for a translation class I was taking, but I loved the parts I read so much that I added it to my own TBR.
