Yes, it is a great performance. These are real artists. When you write a song as an artist, you want to tell a story. When dodo's from television tell you to cut your song in half because of television formats, a real artist would be hurt inside, because they apparently don't understand your story. Meatloaf is the one person, not a group. The ruffled shirts were Meatloaf's signature ones and always held a red handkerchief even in live concerts. Very theatrical. I think music became very theatrical in the early 70's. Alice Cooper, David Bowie, Elton John, George Clinton etc. all put on elaborate concerts to make indoor shows more interesting after the free outdoor festivals of the 60's. People wanted their money's worth. In my opinion Meatloaf kind of reflects that influence here in this '77 video, but the lyrics are more the focal point. When MTV became all the rage in the 80's almost all pop musicians had to be theatrical whether they wanted to or not.
