How many of you have ever gone to an Air Show? I personally had never been to an Air Show before Stephen set up a few photo passes to shoot "Thunder" over the boardwalk this summer in Atlantic City.
Any time I go into a situation where I am shooting something I have never shot before I like to do as much research as possible. In this case I have a longtime friend Matt Ciao who grew up shooting fighter jets and air shows.
I asked him to give me his Top Tips for shooting photos at an air show. One of the main tips is don't freeze the props. What he said is when you are shooting air planes one of the biggest mistakes is freezing the propellers. I would have thought I set my shutter speed high and just let it rip and freeze the action. It's a good thing I spoke to Matt before hand to get a better understand about what I should be looking to capture.

So you were using a monopod, but I find for air shows/airports shooting handheld makes it easier to track the planes, especially the fast jets. For the prop planes a monopod might help with the slower shutter speeds but with the faster shutter speeds on the jets I don't think you need it. Good job on your first air show. It did look like some of the smaller planes were too far from where you were for that 300 mm lens.
Yeah, i love going to airshows. Great chance to change up what you are shooting! Also I love the noise of the planes!!!
I've been searching a lot for info or technique on shooting aircraft. Lucky enough for me that I live at the end of the runway at an Air Force Base so I get a lot of practice shooting these fast movers. It was nice to finally see a video with info and technique on shooting something I love. Thanks Fro. I hear them overhead as I type.
I like this side of you Jared, nice to see you enjoying yourself at an event even though your teaching lol :)
Come to Wales and do the Mach loop!
You did a awesome job on them pictures they look amazing great job.....I LIKE!!!
I Shot an air show years ago with an FM (3.5 fps) and a cheap 400mm 5.6 lens. Only had four rolls of film But I had a blast and got some good shots. after watching this I think I'll find out when our next local air show will be. what fun.
Fast forward to August 2023 and thank you for the tips on focusing and about looking up the teams formations. Attending my first air show mid August 23 at Surfers Paradise, Queensland Australia. Looking forward to a great day with my trusty older gear. I saw the Miss Geico racing boat in the water. That baby can really move.
Great video! I'm new to photography and love airshows! Great tips!
Very good you are always honest and down to earth
Thanks for great tips. It helped me to take some wonderful pics today at airshow.
What a informative and fun video Jared. Props to Stephen also. You guys rock!
Been waiting FOREVER for this video...Thanks Steven and & Fro!!
Good job Jared with only 300mm! I am an aviation photographers and I seldom use less then 800mm (normally ~1200mm). I can get a set on Flickr if you would like to do an rapid fire critique with an aviation theme?
Oh and one tip, lose the monopod if they start going vertical you will miss the shot.
Great idea shooting this event and sharing tips! A unique video by any standards!
Hi Jared … thanks for your Video and Tips … Which Monopod are you using ? Please...
Jared what mic are you using...so amazed with all that wind i heard none through your mic.
I wish he'd answer, I'm just as curious. My guess is a shotgun mic on camera with a deadCat. Sounds great considering the wind.
Actually I take that back, I spotted a lavaliere mic cord coming out of his pocket. But where is the mic? No rustling and it isn't visible. He's definitely got a good audio guy.
for most airshows i go to to get good images i would say 500 would be a good enough focal length. cheaper options would be a 70-300 on a crop sensor works great.
The art of Jet Photography and sounds are ASMR. No doubt
Finally! I've been waiting for this :P Great photos
I had the opportunity to shoot the Thunderbirds over the summer at Oshkosh Airventure. Awesome show!
holy dust spots batman!
Awesome you got to see an airshow over the ocean like that! So funny that you would get a seagull instead of an airplane. Nothing like a high subsonic fly-by!
YAY!! I miss your 5 min portraits. Wish you could do more. :)
One thing I picked up with him is the fact that his photos have the plabes looking like they are leaving the photo. Rather capture less smoke and have the planes come into the first 1/3 of the shot. Oh and shutter priority mode is a beast for our Canon guys out there
How do you get this quality level of audio when shooting in that much wind with a DSLR setup? Even with a fur wind shield on my mic I can't seem to avoid the wind noise when in much less wind than this video shows.
This was absurdly amazing, man 👍 So glad to see this & to see you enjoying it
Fro, just shot my first air show this summer with the Blue Angels. Talk about adrenaline! Great video and tips! Thanks for sharing!
I know this an old video, but I'm going to my first airshow this weekend and this video helped tremendously. Will definitely ask for help while I'm there. Hopefully I get some good keepers!
D300 with 70-200 f/2.8 at 200 2.8 gave me the rewards I sought. Cropping is a must. My old 300 f/2.8 af was disappointing on the crisp focus side vs 200. It also like jumps a bit before obtaining focus sometimes. Under close controlled test focus shots it seems ok. Send to Nikon for adjustment or eBay and get ?. Thanks
Wow thanks. First vid to come up. I'm going to my first air show, stuart fl.in a few weeks. Any tips for shooting videos with a gimbal there?
As a very beginner, please forgive if I sound so dumb. But is it OK to lock the focus on jet while performing and zoom the lens then, to fill the frame? Or should I keep the lens all the way zoomed in before trying to get a shot?
Brilliant. Holy afterburners, gum on your monopod and seagulls....You should do stand up comedy. Great video.
Awesome video! For the first time out seems like you got some great shots (and the plane shots weren't bad themselves ;o))
Really interesting video! The photo at 3:56 is great, lovely angle!
Just seen this video. As usual a nicely put together video. The only critical thing I could add is you should really have had a head on the monopod so you could tilt upwards. I almost thought you was going to pick it up to reach the higher flying jets.
Jared, did you turn off VR on monopod?
You should have tried the Group focus mode. I almost use it exclusively. Set a point or group like creating a focus trap (like from the non AF days) When the plane hits it the camera locks on. (Given your camera has group)
great shots well done
I have another tip for you,use central focuspoint and spotmeting.
Get rid of the pod and big lens and get close. Work on panning and you'll find even jets crossing in front of you are composable. Set your camera on single exposure and make you shots count.
I shot the Cleveland Air Show with the same 300mm f/2.8 lens you've got here with and without the 1.4x TC. It's much easier shooting without the TC while on a monopod. With the TC I had a lot of frames with the plane cropped going in or out of the frame. Just shoot high rez and crop if needed. The 300 tracks focus excellent. The good news is Air shows generally have plenty of light, so shutter speed is not a problem. An f/4 lens would do fine too. Maybe a TC if you've got a tripod and a fluid head.
Chris Kay Yep. Every time I go it seems it's the Thunderbirds there and it's hazy. No nice clouds for a backdrop.
This was good.... Nice photos !
I'm thinking of buying a Canon 7D Mk2 with a 100-400MM L lens for the july airshow at hillsboro
Great Video and results.
What focus tracking would work better, d9 or group or 3d..
Appreciate your advice...Nikon DSLR Full frame
I’m teaching my friend how to use his brand new canon 90d in the Airshow/plane spotting field and this is perfect
Good job Jared.👍
Shooting my first air show tomorrow (19 Aug) Chicago Air and water show!
That was an awesome video! Did you have VR on while panning? What aperture did you find most useful for this type of shooting? Do you think a lens like the Tamron 150-600mm would have been good for this situation?
I’m going to an air show this weekend and I remember the last time I was at an air show, I shot film with a Nikon F100. Wow.
Jared, one thin you didn't mention is top aperture to use. You mentioned shooting at higher aperture but I'd ask you to do a bit of research on this. Phase Detection AF points which is the AF system for fast action top out at f8, least in mirrorless cameras. Shooting above f8 may mean you're relying on the slower Contrast Section AF system of your camera. I'm guessing PDAF has the same limitations in DSLRs. I agree with others who recommend ditching the monopod.
Jared,
Ok, a few questions, I have a D800 and am looking at the 400mm f2.8 lens. I mostly shoot landscape and nature but have dabbled with bird photography, drag racing photography and I also shoot remote controlled model air planes for my local RC Club and I would like to try my hand at air show photography. Knowing what camera I'm shooting and the events I'm planning to shoot, I'm assuming that most of the time I will be either on a monopod or tripod, is it worth it to go with the VR lens or save the money and go with the non VR lens? Thanks for your help.
Eric
Thank you for your help Jared I hope it works this weekend I soot with a Nikon D300 and D750 do you have any advice for this camera for shots like this
3:55 - That, is an awesome shot!
Too bad you didn't have any crop camera with you, maybe D7100 would do the job as well, maybe better considering the 1.5 crop.
Great video, thanks but jeez what a photography minefield!😳
Awesome tips...
Where exactly on the boardwalk are you in this video. I’m asking bc I wanna book a room for the Thunder Over The Boardwalk 2021
Haha.
Earplugs earplugs....
Use some of that hair dude !!!!!!!!!
Are you going this year Jared Polin?
Can I ask where this airshow took place. I’d like to go someday and take pictures
shooting a drifting event would be fun too ;)
Jarod, do you think that the photos would have popped a bit more had the sky been clear blue in the background, rather than hazy cloudy and white. Did the background make it more difficult setting your exposure, because I have found that when I am shooting video anything white or bright can blow out the objects in frame, such as with the planes you were shooting. Obviously as photographers and videographers we have to deal with ALL conditions, but shooting this in either clear blue sky and not in the most sunny time of the day would be optimal. Imagine if you could shoot this same show during the golden hour.
The most amazing thing for me is that it isn't overcast.
just got one its amazing
12:36 "Put some hair in there" ahahaha :))
You weren't kidding about the dust.
what feature is that at 10:02? burst? hi speed continuous? seems like my EOS R will only do 3-4 per second at airshows. idk how to make it go faster.
I was using a t1i with a 300mm lens at an air show about two years ago, I was about 15, and man I was doing a lot of manual work and learning as I went to get those planes, and I didnt even have a lens hood and I think those photos turned out well, and even looked as good as a lot of these, this yeah I have to use manual focus
How was it using a t1i?
@@jeepjoseph9036 not bad, it just goes to show expensive and new fancy equipment isnt necessary
@@ethanharris108 hows the af
Not as good as the sony a9000 I have but it did the job, I had some images I wasnt able to tell if they were blurry until after but I didnt have a single airplane I didnt have a clear photo of
@@ethanharris108 a9000?
Can you just set the focusing ring to infinity and set the f-stop at f8 for the jet and f11 for the propeller planes at 200 ISO? it looks like you need a 400 mm (effective) lens.
When shooting airshows, I keep both my eyes open so I can have better peripheral vision, and time it easier instead of "spray an pray"
Why do people use monopods for lenses which don't require them? It's going to hinder your panning and it's utterly pointless for anything under 400mm. Even a 400 isn't taxing to hand-hold.
Air show newbie.. LOL. It's funny when you cowered in fear on the fast and low pass at 11:05. You got some great shots though.
You need the full Wimberley gimbal. Ditch the monopod.
What metering are you using.
You sure had fun :-)
Try this again with a slower camera Jared. I'm gonna be doing this on a 6D in six months ;)
P.S, to any other fans saying this camera can't do it. It can, did very well last year.
whats the pole you are using to hold up your camera? Thanks
I am guessing it's a sirui monopod
When did you shoot this?
Are you using manual focus for this?
Yes, he was
What ISO were you shooting at
you're doing something wrong.. the woman in 9:38 got her keeper in 5sec xD
jk very nice images for the first airshow!!
Best part is at 11:07, love the ducking out of the way.
This definitely has an old UA-camr look and feel! lol
I shot a identical picture for the picture of this video and was thinking how did he get my photo? XD
f-16 still one of the best looking fighter jets
GR4 :)
I shot with 18-55mm 😍 D3500
Next video - JARED CROPS FOR THE FIRST TIME! :)
Next Time: Get rid of the Monopod. You gonna be faster with following the Planes. And: get yourself a 200-400 (rent). A variable Focallenght is best for this!
I'm sorry to say but I have a hard time believing he was at 80th of a second. It looks more like 250th which is what I shoot at a lot. At 250th you see the blur of each blade but at 80 it should be a solid disc or almost nothing at all. You can see a little of what I have shot on my Flickr acct and see what I am talking about. I typically just use shutter priority because I'm not good enough yet for full manual.
1/125th would work well...
5:40 ...don't waste the film ... well actually ... all DSLR's have a limited lifespan and maximum number of shots. I think Nikon's D5600 is a bout 100.000 photos. Pro models are of course way higher then that but ... none the less you're still saving your camera.
Ha I'm in this video.
Cool 😂
Left! Right! Seagull!
Use manual focus set to infinity ... no more focusing worries :)
What was that jet at around 11:05?
+27G27G27 F-16
Prop blur is nice, but closed prop is where it's at.
Great jobb on your first airshow. Late comment but I just discovered your video. Something I learned early on was to track the planes far away as well since they usually repeat their patterns. Start tracking them far off and the closer they get you start shooting and when they are as close as they get just hold the button down or do burst if you have a small buffer. If you have enough reach you can fill the frame entirely. Here are some of my aviation photos. www.flickr.com/photos/gfridell/albums/72157670020273078
