Is an extender any good for shooting aviation photography? I recently got myself a Canon 2X Extender to pair with my 70-200mm f/2.8 zoom and I wanted to compare it with my Tamron 150-600mm G2 which I usually use. Join me at RAF Lakenheath to shoot some F15 jets to find out!

I also shoot the Tamron 150-600 G2 lens and I think it´s very sharp! Then again I always shoot at f/8 for maximal sharpness.

Thanks for sharing. Never used the extender so good to learn from your feedbacks. Btw I’m thinking to go shooting at Lakenheath some time in the future. Is autumn/winter a better season as the weather in the video appeared clear and dry?
I use a 100-400 mkii canon lens on it's own all the time and get great results on the mach loop, great video by the way, And personally I would not use an extender for photographing fast objects, the focusing speed becomes too slow for me.
You’re right about the a/f speeds, but I suppose it depends what lens you’re comparing to. Certainly no contest against your 100-400ii!! It felt at least as responsive to me as the Tamron.
@@sturousephoto So can you actually get away with an extender on a Canon 100-400.....maybe a 1.4 as opposed to the 2?
Depends on the camera body and the lighting! Older DSLRs won’t auto focus with darker apertures. Your best bet is to look up the camera/lens compatibility which will show A/F function vs minimum aperture and compatibility with a TC. Hope that helps.
@@sturousephoto Thanks, I will give that a try. I've been taking aviation photos for a few years now and have just grown more frustrated with my inability to get some razor sharp images. I'm using a T2i and a Canon 70D and have the 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS USM, which I have had since 2016. I just can't find any consistency in my shots....maybe it's my technique, but I've always felt that my 100-400 maybe just doesn't have the reach I want or need. I'm shooting on a very tight budget, so even getting stuff used in order to upgrade stuff is difficult. Almost at the point where I just want to pack the camera gear up and sell it to be honest.
Sorry to hear that. Can I suggest you look at my 7DMkII settings for aviation video and translate as many of those settings over to your camera as you can, or the nearest equivalent. The settings and functions won’t all be identical but the basics might hopefully help you out - fingers crossed your hit rate will increase. Keep persevering! Good luck!

This video is amazing as I’m trying to decide right now what lens I should get. I think I’m going to get the 150-600 because of the lower cost but I’ll probably get a 70-200 iii and a 2x in the future. Once I can afford it, I’ll eventually get some RF stuff like 100-500 and r5.

I have a basic 55-250mm lens (canon) that goes f4 to 5.6... always wanted to get a 1.4 or 2 extender, but I fear my photos would get too dark
By adding an extender you’re taking that lens to either an f/8 (1.4x) or f/11 (2x) aperture - which means, depending on your camera body, you are almost certainly going to lose your autofocus. So, if I were in your shoes, I’d settle for your current lens and crop it or save up and invest in a 400mm second-hand lens. What camera body do you have?

I set auto ISO for 100-6400. That’s usually enough but if it’s too dark for that with a decent shutter speed, I compromise and change lenses to my 70-200 f/2.8. Doesn’t happen very often!

Hi Stuart I have been considering whether to buy the 100-400mm or 70-200mm f2.8 and a 2x converter.
After spending hours apon hours looking at UA-cam videos and phoning various camera shops I decided to buy 70-200mm f2.8 is mk3 and a mk3 2x converter to match.
Your video gave me confirmation of this as canon is second to none for the best equipment.
Is there any where to park cars where you was doing photography and could you give me any information on where to go and not causing any problems

Hi David, thanks for your message and congrats on the new gear! RAF Lakenheath is great for shooting the F15s. It’s easy to park - there is a designated viewers car park at the Thetford Forest end of the runway and a very small unoffficial at the corner of the forest by an access road. You can easily walk to the field at the end of the runway where I made this video, it is open access (according to ordnance survey maps). Be careful when shooting from the car park as often you are shooting towards the light. If you walk to that field and towards the forest, you’ll mostly have the light behind you! And I suggest only going Monday-Thursday. Generally, It’s half day on Friday and no flying at the weekends.

I have a Canon 100mm-400mm and a 2x extender. Do you think that would also be sharp?
Thanks! I think you’d be losing too much light. Personally I’d only ever use an extender with an f/2.8 lens or faster. And also keep in mind you’d probably be losing autofocus functionality (depending on lens/body combination).

What is the device on the hotshoe?
Hi Dominick - it’s a hot shoe to ¼” camera stud screw, with a GoPro screw mount, then a Joby phone holder so I can use my iPhone to do video whilst I’m shooting. Something like this:

I am currently using a 77D with a 55-250mm mki but I do own a Canon 70-200mkii. I was considering the 2x extender but reviews say you lose a lot of sharpness so I was looking at the Sigma 100-400mm but am really confused after watching this. Have you used the Sigma lens or know someone who does use it for aviation shows?
Yes, it’s certainly true that you loose light, contrast and sharpness when using an extender/teleconverter. But it depends what lens you are using it with and what you are comparing it to, and your budget! I haven’t used the sigma 100-400 so I can’t comment on that but I would expect that to be fairly decent. The mega zooms in the 150-600 range, well, you’re asking a lot from a lens at that price point. This video showed me that a stunning Canon L-series 70-200 with a 2x extender actually compares very well with my Tamron 150-600 at 400mm.
